Standing rigging

We will conduct a thorough visual check of the standing rigging, paying particular attention to end terminal fittings and areas where bending fatigue is most likely. Our report will also include our findings on the overall condition of the mast and rigging at the date of the inspection.

Running rigging

Running rigging is visually checked for condition. All materials are checked for UV breakdown, and wear and tear.

Condition

We will report on visual condition only at the time of the report. We will take into account, the age of the stay and its material when checking the condition.

Remaining working life

We cannot estimate the remaining working life of the halyard or stay assembly, as future UV breakdown and bending fatigue cannot be measured.

Hidden defects

It is not possible to detect internal fractures in the wire (which are commonly found in older rigging) from a visual check. Fibre or UV breakdown in rope assemblies can be estimated only by visual checking.

Masts and Spars

We visually check masts and spars for overall condition. Depending on access, it may not be possible to check certain areas while the mast is in situ.

Summary

Any areas of concern will be reported in our findings along with recommended actions.

Our findings are reported following a visual rig check only; therefore, we cannot guarantee that all components are fit for purpose. The report is based on observations made on the date of the rig check and should not be relied upon as an exhaustive list of all possible issues that exist or potential improvements that can be made.

Three Superyachts Visit the Dart.

This morning Dartmouth welcomed the 98m long superyacht ‘Aviva’ to our mainstream mooring buoys in the middle of the town. She joined the 66m long yacht ‘Elysian’ and regular visitor ‘Constance’, which is 47m long, to make a spectacular line up on the Dart.

Whilst superyacht calls are becoming more regular, with many yachts calling to pick up new tenders and support boats from local manufacturers Ribeye, as well as to allow their owners, crew and guest to enjoy the beauty of South Devon, this is the first time we have ever had three yachts of this size on the river. Our mainstream moorings, originally designed by the Admiralty for mooring warships, are extremely flexible and able to be configured to accommodate vessels from small yachts to cruise ships.

Aviva has a hybrid propulsion system, and arrived in port this morning entirely on battery propulsion. Arriving from Troon in Scotland, she entered the river under the guidance of our Pilot, turned at the Higher Ferry and launched a tender from the garage at the stern, before being moored by the harbour team.

Weather and circumstances depending, we expect all three yachts to remain in port until at least Thursday, giving plenty of opportunity for local people to see the boats on the river.

Anyone know of a rigger (or indeed anyone who is willing to climb a mast with "steps"and drill a few holes -----I dont like heights !!)) in Plymouth other than Euro Spar, Allspar and Hemisphere ? I'v tried them and they are fully booked till may !! Cheers

Neil_Y

Not strictly riggers but Plymartech may be able to help or know someone, they are based at mountbatten boat sheds.

Yacht Rigging Services Ltd Try these guys: http://www.yacht-rigging.co.uk/ rob

wklein

If i were you, and as its only a small straight forward job, i would go in and ask if any of the riggers want to do it as a private job. Chances are they will all have their own rivet guns and chairs. The rigging company shouldn't mind too much. How come mast steps are such an urgent job? Especially if you don't like heights.

Thanks for your replies chaps . Plymartec will hone 'em tomorrow . Matt has done work for me before . Yacht rigging Services are Euorspar . ------ I think . have asked riggers for a bit of "moonlighting" not one was interested . Offered £100 for an evenings work . BTW The reference to the mast steps was just indicating the ease of climbing the mast .they are not at fault . Cheers

Yacht & Motor Boat Surveys in Devon & Cornwall

yacht riggers dartmouth

Laura & Phil

Hi Roger, We just wanted to say thank you for allowing us to go through the survey with you a few weeks ago. Your patience and advice were invaluable. We're off to pick up Lufi finally today and can't wait to get stuck in! Thanks again!

j7I4O2

Dear Roger, I must thank you for a very professional report on XXXXX and more so for the time you have taken over and above discussing the various issues with this yacht.

While I appreciated the issues are repairable, the cost of doing so to the correct standard soon mounts up, the turning point in the deal for me, was once I got the vendor to accept the issues reported he would not reduce the price to allow the work to be completed by Darthaven as you recommended, but wanted to repair the yacht himself!   I think this answered the questions of why there were so many issues with this yacht! If he is the marine engineer he reports to be why did he not attend to them before, this then started to raise doubt in my mind about this yacht so in the end I was relived to walk away. Following all this he asked again for your report so he could see what he needed to attend to before the next person had a survey!

I take away from this a very positive learning curve in buying a yacht and again thank you for your assistance

PXfDWC

Hi Roger Great to meet you too. Thank you again for coming down on a Sunday, it is much appreciated. It was interesting and very instructive to talk through things as they arose. I hope that it wasn't too much of a pain having me looking over your shoulder.I thought your report was very clear, fair and well presented. I will send it on to GJW and take it from there. In the meantime I'll get on with the hoses, fire extinguishers and cleats/fairleads.  If I were to proceed with the  Welsh Nauticat 43  what would your price be for a pre-purchase survey ...... Kind regards

bV8PzJ

Hi Roger Thank you for all your hard work on that. It is an epic tome! I've spoken to the broker and discussed various ways forward. I'm putting off until Monday a decision on what to do but I got the distinct impression that there could be movement on the price based on proper in-the-water testing of the engine. I may still go ahead if the price is right, fool that I am. ....  Kind regards

oO4Nnf

Hi Roger Thank you for the survey, it was comprehensive and well presented.  I was wondering if you would be willing to act as my agent to take delivery of the vessel ...... Kind regards

3Ywob8

Hello Roger Thank you very much for your time and advice last week and for your report. All very helpful ..... so all we need now is a good weather window in the New Year. In the meantime Freya is back at Dart Marina and Dave is keeping his eye on her.  Merry Christmas to you and your family. Kind regards

az9nkf

Dear Roger Thank you very much for your thorough examination of Metula and for your detailed and helpful report which is very professionally worded. I shall not hesitate to recommend you in future. Kind regards

4Qufe2

Roger, Delighted - superb- you were correct- I'm not disappointed. Ring you shortly. Regards,

5TpmR3

You are a star - many thanks for getting this done so quickly with no notice - really appreciate your support - Gone through the report and delighted with the thorough & quality of the work  Many thanks

tEOnzp

Mark, Lieutenant Commander Royal Navy

Roger, Thank you for the prompt and very comprehensive report. I am going to push ahead with the purchase of the boat as there is nothing there that worries me, and as I am sure you can guess I can do the majority of the work myself. Many thanks for you time with the survey, I was very impressed by the thoroughness of it and the report, and I will be recommending your services. Best regards,

g7xK8N

Hi Roger Many thanks for a thorough, and very instructive survey today. Head is still reeling and I will have to hit the manuals! I look forward to seeing your full report. Best Regards

io3sjC

Dear Roger Thanks for that. I've done a bit of homework since my previous message, and can see that this is indeed largely routine maintenance. Your report was very clear and helpful, so many thanks. And you should have received my bank transfer! Yours

Sxh239

Morning Roger, I trust you to are up early writing glowing things about Sea Thyme. It was a good few days wasn't it - I learnt a load thank you.   I am off to the boat today to meet the owner and to sign various things.I have completed your contract and find myself thoroughly stitched up again!   I have sent the money. I take it the Bowman's owner's partner, was realistic - nice chap when I spoke to him.   Hard news to take when you find your boat is terminally ill.   Let me know if and when you find outs where GRP boats go to when they die.   Is there a massive landfill site somewhere do you think?  Anyway many thanks, you undoubtedly saved me a nightmare and a fortune in both time and money and I am very grateful.   Job well done. Keep in touch. Warm regards.

gcAp8C

Paul & Sue

Dear Roger, I am in receipt of your excellent survey - I have to say that it is most thorough and informative, and be assured that I will be delighted to recommend your services in future. The engine report has revealed a few minor issues (breather hoses and cooler covers) which will be resolved. I have also decided to replace the left leg bellows as well as the right whilst it's out of the water and to keep things 'in synch'. Thanks once again and very kind regards

pPXVCF

Many thanks, Roger. Seems very comprehensive. I'm keen to go ahead. Best wishes

z096Z3

Thanks, that's pretty comprehensive! Nicely presented too. Do you think I could be cheeky and request a copy of the photos you took? I can't extract them from the PDF.  Thanks

kDuhvP

Hi Roger Just a quick word to say ‘thank you' for your very detailed report and also that we are now the proud owners of the boat. Regards

maiLlJ

Hi Roger Thank you for that full and educating survey. Haven't got any questions concerning the Boat, but waiting on the others to go through it. But for now thanks for your professional service. Regards

IueGi3

Roger - all as discussed on Thursday, excellent report - Thanks again for all you knowledge and professionalism Regards

84IV1A

Hi Roger,  Really enjoyed meeting you too and grateful for the time you took explaining things to me. Good to meet another ex glider flyer at that! Report looks excellent and really helpful. It will come as no surprise that I am buying the boat, and hopefully by Easter time I should have her round in Falmouth and I look forward to many hours, days, months, sailing her. May be you will spot me up Diddisham during the season, if so, come and say hello. Many thanks for your help

07Utv3

Dear Roger, I have now had the time to read your report and very good it is too. Thank you very much. I have no particular questions, she is very much as I expected, though I am , of course, grateful that you found no nasty surprises. Many thanks and my kind regards

HhL0xs

Roger, Many thanks for the report Roger - and I'm sorry that you had to conduct the survey in such appalling weather. Further to our discussion this morning on the basis of your findings we have now pulled out of the purchase of ‘XXXXXXX'.  I have shared the conclusions page with the owner, but haven't released the report - they didn't seem too interested so I didn't bother. I did mention this morning that I had a couple of small queries with the report but as they have become irrelevant and I haven't shared the full report I won't worry any further, unless the owners come back.  Also as mentioned, we are now looking at another vessel, which I will write to you separately on shortly. Thanks again for your assistance and endurance! Kind regards

Ih1zp4

Dear Roger, It occurred to me yesterday that I hadn't contacted you since we spoke or since I received the survey you did on XXXXX in Holland. Having read it through in some detail, I was generally very satisfied with the boat's condition and all that you said about it. I negotiated a hefty discount on the price which I thought was satisfactory and completed payment yesterday. I'm spending time aboard soon attending to some of the vital works, the yard in Brouwershaven are doing the lion's share. With fair winds and a bit of luck we will be bringing her back to her new berth in the UK during the Easter weekend. I will be in touch once she is here and we could share a drink aboard to celebrate. Many thanks for a great job. Best Wishes

Hi Roger, Just a short note by way of an update since we last spoke.  We did indeed go ahead with the purchase of Mallard following your endorsement on the vessel.  We have a fortnight to sail her back to our home port, Burnham-on-Crouch, and have plans to visit a number of places around the Solent and the south coast - no fixed plan as of yet and much will depend on weather of course. If you're around anywhere over the next week let us know and we'll see if we can meet up for a beer.  If we don't get to meet I would like to thank you again for your assistance in finding the right vessel. Kind regards

mr8yZs

Thank you Roger. I'm pleased you started off with the good bits.... actually, it doesn't make too terrifying reading. I've booked a rigging inspection and will talk to Dave next time I'm at the yard. Best wishes and thanks again

I am pleased with your extensive report and will attend to all of your recommendations over the coming months. Like the MOT for cars this survey highlights matters, that, for safety, need attention.

When I have re-read your report again there may be a couple of questions that I would like help with so will come back to you in due course.

Regards & thank you.

Alastair & Cheryl

I wanted to thank you for the survey you undertook for us recently, and to let you know how things are going. We are proceeding with the purchase, with the seller putting in another £15k or so of work to bring the boat up to scratch (full re-rigging, new batteries x10, bilge pump - more than 20 items in all). We have you to thank for that. And with your additional observations and suggestions for remedial work in the coming years, we feel we have a good handle on what is to come.

Good news: we sent the sails off to a local loft for cleaning and inspection - the sails have some grease stains from an over-lubricated mast, and a little Sahara sand staining from sitting in the mast “almost unused since new". Thus with the patching of the stained area, we have sails that the sail loft say are of high quality (for cruising) and fit for "maybe 10 years of careful cruising use". We couldn’t believe our luck!

Thanks again for your comprehensive report and followup discussion, we are delighted with the outcome and couldn’t be happier with your help.

Best wishes

Broker Remarks

Lyster was commissioned in Holland in 1972 and is a Lloyds UK Part 1 Registered Ship. She is a heavy displacement and very seaworthy double ended yacht. (To quote the Naval Architect Colin Mudie) she wouldn’t be out of place in any navy or coastguard service. She has been under current ownership for two years and is being sold due to the age of the owners. She is extremely comfortable with a huge amount of stowage available and is suitable for extended live-aboard.  A programme of work has been undertaken in recent years including a new Perkins Sabre Engine with full drive train renewal, Navionics update, standing & running rigging, bow thruster, windows, cooker, soft furnishings, hull valves.

Accommodation

Accommodation:

The boat has up to 6 berths with 2 separate sleeping cabins. Up forward there are 2 single berths with storage beneath and at eye level forward. LED lighting throughout. The heads suction and discharge hull valves (new in 2023) are located under the port bunk. Overhead there is deck opening hatch with folding ladder step. Access to the Bow Thruster and Chain Locker forward.

Moving aft the Albin Marine Head (new in March 2024) is located to port. A hand basin (hot and cold pressurised water) drains overboard. A shower unit connects to the basin plumbing which drains to a sump beneath the wooden sole. A hand pump under the basin drains the sump overboard. An opening port hole and a solar powered extractor fan overhead.

In the saloon there is a linear galley on the starboard side with a Nelson gas 2 burner Cooker with oven and grill. There is a stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressurised fresh water from a 100 litre water tank under the sole. The sink discharges overboard via a new composite through hull fitting. An emergency fresh water supply from a 25 litre tank under the sole is connected to the galley sink via a separate 12 volt pump. A full outfit of plates, glasses and cutlery is provided. A front opening Isotherm Fridge is located next to the cooker. There is extensive stowage around the galley. A ventilation hatch is above the cooker. A removable wooden tray is fitted above the galley range for additional work surface.

Aft of the galley is the navigation position with hinged chart table and aft facing seat. Instrumentation and book stowage are co-located here. The bulkhead mounted speakers for the Pioneer Stereo System are to port either side of the Navtex readout. The Gas Alarm unit (Sensor under the sole) is mounted over the chart table next to the Samsung Tablet Chartplotter and the Spare VHF DSC unit. The high water alarm for the stern gland bilge is mounted here. Next to the accommodation ladder to the wheelhouse is a locker for hanging wet weather gear.

Opposite the galley is the U shaped seating around the table with flap that converts into a double bed. A steel support beam beneath the mast tabernacle is clad in carved wood. To port there are lockers/shelves for glassware, books and drinks cabinet. A 12 volt flat screen TV/DVD is mounted on the forward bulkhead. New curtains are provided on all windows around the saloon.

In the wheelhouse there are two seats, one either side of the companionway. The helm is to port with rudder indicator. The Engine, Gearbox, Trolling valve, Autopilot, Horn, Battery Management and Bow Thruster controls face the helm. The Chartplotter, Echsounder/Speed Log, Wind Instrument and main VHF DSC are also mounted here. An electric fan is sited above the panel. Across the aft section of the wheelhouse there is a wood slatted bench seat.

The aft cabin is accessed via a hatch down from the aft end of the wheelhouse. It contains two 6’ 6” berths and generous stowage with a hanging space. Windows with curtains are provided port and starboard with a porthole amidships aft. The stern gland is accessed under the sole which can be raised with the strops provided. A manual bilge pump and an automatic 12 volt bilge pump are fitted. The control switch for the 12 volt bilge pump is mounted next to the companion way adjacent to the CO alarm. A high water alarm sensor is fitted in this bilge which sounds above the chart table.

Mechanical and Rigging

Construction:

LYSTER was built by Eista Werf in Holland in 1972 to a Dick Lefeber design. A GRP hull with painted dark blue topsides, Long Keel with 2000kg integral ballast. Substantial rubber rubbing strake around the hull, GRP deck, coach roof and dog house painted light blue with Treadmaster panels. All windows renewed in 2010 with toughened glass.

  • The wheelhouse sole contains 6 removable sections positioned above gutters which drain overboard via a hull valve.
  • The main section amidships covers the Perkins Sabre M92B engine .  This unit was installed in 2009 and has completed 80 hours. It has been regularly professionally serviced.
  • To access the oil dipstick, oil filler, raw water circulation pump and the Merlin battery charger, the port sole section beneath the helm seat is removed to reveal duck boards in the bilge to stand and crouch on. The cranking and domestic battery banks are aft of this section.
  • On the starboard side the sole section under the seat reveals duck boards over the bilge giving access to the alternator belt, the oil, fuel and air filters and the fuel supply valves/primary filters.
  • The aft sole section on the starboard side, reveals the cooling water hull valve beneath the weed trap, the calorifier and the engine room & stern gland compartment bilge pump discharge.
  • The aft centreline sole section reveals the gutter drain hull valve, the ZF45A gear box with dipstick/filler, the Aquadrive unit, three greaser units for the stern gland (forward and aft) and the rudder post gland.
