The Nantucket Alerion Sailboat: A Classic Reinvented
The Nantucket Alerion. This beauty was reinterpreted in the late 1970s on the island of Nantucket by Alfie Sanford, a longtime resident and classics enthusiast who wanted to incorporate the new technology of cold-molded wood with Herreshoff's design. He also needed to adapt to local sailing conditions, namely the shoal water of Nantucket Harbor.
Boat Review: Alerion Sport 30
Upwind and under the traditional mainsail and self-tacking jib, the Alerion happily tacked through 80 degrees. It was nice to actually be sailing while the other boats around us bobbed in our wake. The Alerion Sport 30 has a classic appeal, is easy to sail and will turn heads in a race or anchorage.

Beneath the traditional sheer and topsides of the Alerion 33 is a thoroughly modern underbody. The full-roach main, carbon-fiber mast, and self-tacking jib boom make the Alerion 33 an elegant performer on all points of sail, while the electric winches allow easy adjustment in all wind conditions.

The first boats (7) were built by Holby Marine. After 1991 the boats were built by TPI. Later boats have an updated keel w/bulb designed by Garry Hoyt. Specs above are from original builder's documentation from 1991. Current (2012) builder's specs show a displacement of 5,700 lbs and a ballast of 2,200 lbs.

The Alerion 30 is the first Alerion offered with the option of a carbon-fiber bowsprit for the asymmetric gennaker. Combined with a full-roach mainsail and swept-spreader carbon-fiber mast, the A30 is a true thoroughbred.
