Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I had a look over one of these boats at the weekend with the view to buying, they are based on a Moody 27 hull, She looked well found and was ok down below, having just sold my wooden boat she ticked some of the boxes for my future boat i.e not too plasticy, the seller is working abroad and she is being sold by a broker, all her sails have been removed for the winter but i am wondering what she sails like, has anyone any experience of sailing on these boat, Thanks. Chris.

I do not think they are based on a Moody hull. The Nova was a much earlier design and according to this advert, designed by Westall. http://www.boatshed.com/nova_27-boat-77541.html

A chum has one and I've sailed her a few times. Brick outhouse construction, though the companionway is rather on the large side. Lots of accomodation bearing in mind her size. Surprising turn of speed from what appears to be a rather clonky looking MAB. Venerable Saab thumper for an engine.

There was a test on the Nova 27 in Sailing Today, July 04. They found the Nova "not as close winded as racier and more modern designs, but will tack through a very respectable 95-100 degrees and makes little leeway in moderate conditions. In our test we found we could expect 4Kn or more with the wind forward of the beam and in excess of 5.5Kn with it aft of the beam. During our test, with full sail in 15Kn plus of true wind she was quite heavy on the helm when the boat became overpressed in gusts, although a reef in the main would be enough to reduce the heel and return the balance." The verdict says "Although less well known than many of her contemporaries the Nova 27 is a solid and safe yacht with a considerable amount of space packed into her 27ft, and she offers excellent value for money. For: Spacious accommodation, Generous berth lengths, outstanding headroom. Against: Heavy helm, large main hatch is vulnerable in heavy weather, headroom forward." According to the article the hull was indeed used on the Moody 27 which was built from 78-80, "although this should not be confused with the all-new Bill Dixon designed Moody 27 which was built by Marine Projects from 1981 onwards.

Thanks Steve, and everone else who responded, Negotiations are at an early stage, the vendor living in the far east doesnt help.

Hi Chris, Did you buy that Nova 27 in the end? If so, I'm interested to know what you think of them. I like the look of them and missed out on buying one earlier this year. Cheers, Matt.

  • 21 Oct 2018

Hi matt, sorry for the late reply. I did buy a Nova and sailed her everyday. I owned her for six years. Very solid construction, pretty fast in light airs and in a blow a reef or two in the main made all the difference. Don't be put off by the old Saab diesel, my engine pushed the boat along at 6.5knts all day long. Down below is pretty spacious with full standing headroom. The main hatch is massive and is a weakness in my opinion, check out the wood work on the hatches as it tends to rot. The fire hatch has a weird drain system which easily clogs up and spills into the cabin. Would I buy one again? Probably not.

Review of Nova 27

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Nova 27 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard SAAB diesel engine at 10 hp (7 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.0 knots

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Nova 27 is 1.88, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Nova 27 is about 125 kg/cm, alternatively 703 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 125 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 703 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.04

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 8.1 m(26.7 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet8.1 m(26.7 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Mainsheet 20.3 m(66.7 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

The Nova 27 is a 27.67ft masthead sloop designed by John Westell and built in fiberglass by Honnor Marine Ltd. since 1971.

The Nova 27 is a heavy sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.

“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
“ Our new furling jib for a Corsair 27 Had to be specially designed due to the height of the furler, but this was accomplished quickly and in short order we had our sail which fits beautifully and has a great shape. It’s everything we could have wanted, high tech design, thoughtfully executed and affordable.” -Nancy Y. (Yelp)

Broker's Comments

This Nova 27 is for sale due to lack of use. Currently afloat at Swansea Marina, this boat has unfortunately had little use over the last year and is looking very green and in need of a good scrub and some tlc.

The boat itself is spacious and has a generous main cabin which feels and gives the impression of being closer to a 30 footer.

A long keel, relatively heavy displacement and a handsome sheer line mark her out as a west coast yacht. She requires some work to bring her back to a state which she deserves.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

UK's vessel Bayesian

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

100-Year-Old Sailing Ship Uncovered by Flash Flooding on Nova Scotia Beach

Canada’s East Coast is a rough place to sail . Over the centuries, many a ship has met its end in the area , and heavy rains recently exposed a sailing ship that has been hidden for over a century.

Summerville, Nova Scotia is a tiny little town. The water off its coast is connected to the Bay of Fundy — a place with some of the biggest tide swings in the world — and the beach completely disappears under nearly 50 feet of water on a high tide.

A few months ago, however, flash flooding pushed a huge amount of sand off the beach, and one of three abandoned vessels became visible at low tide.

“Most people thought that was the wharf, but they didn’t know there was three ships buried in the sand,” said Wilfred Ogilvie to Global News .

According to reports, the ships were visible until sometime in the ’70s.

“They even had a big bunkhouse here because between the (gypsum) quarry and the docks and everything that was here,” Ogilvie remembered. “There was close to 100 men used to work here.”

Ogilvie said that the boat that was uncovered is likely the Hamburg, “a three-masted wooden vessel with square sails built in nearby Hantsport and launched in 1886.”

When the Hamburg was built, ship nails were made from wood.

“They didn’t use much steel like bolts and things. In those days everything was wood, of course,” Ogilvie explained.

Once the steam engine was invented, though, the Hamburg and her sails were abandoned at a wharf that sat where the wrecks now reside. That wharf burned down in 1936, but the wrecks remained there.

“And for years they sat there and probably sunk pretty well every day,” Ogilvie said. “And then the gravel started building in around them, and finding their little holes, and (they) were pretty well buried as we’ve seen here today.”

Former Bayesian captain offers insight

Published on August 27th, 2024 by Editor -->

Stephen Edwards , captain of the 58.6m Perini Navi built Seahawk, was previously Captain from 2015 to 2020 for the 56m Perini Navi Bayesian which sank August 19 with seven deaths while at anchor off the coast of Porticello, Italy.

While investigators seek answers for why a storm downburst led to this tragedy, and whether manslaughter and negligent shipwreck are to be brought, Edwards issued the following statement from his experience with the 2008 yacht:

Having been bombarded with requests for information from journalists around the World for my input into the loss of S/Y Bayesian a week ago, I have finally decided to make some notes on the subject.

I have no desire to contribute to the wild speculation and claims that we have seen so far, or in any way suggest what really happened… only those on board at the time will know that, but I can shed some light on the characteristics of the vessel and some of the limitations that would likely be involved in this disaster.

nova 27 sailing yacht

Bayesian (ex Salute) was a 56m Perini Navi, part of a very successful series of hulls. She was the only one built as a sloop rig (single mast), with the tallest aluminum mast ever constructed. I’m going to discuss step-by-step what I hope are pertinent facts about the boat and her design and operation that are relevant to this event.

1. Mast The mast and rig were certainly a major feature of the yacht and presented structural challenges in construction and ongoing life. As it pushed the boundaries of aluminum mast construction there were lessons that had to be learned over the years, but the result was a robust and well controlled rig in the end that performed well, within the limits of the design. The vessel is delivered with a set of sailplan recommendations that for a range of wind strengths will cause the vessel to sail within the structural limits of the rig and heeling limits of the hull.

2. Ballast The height of Bayesian’s mast was of course considered in the overall design of the boat by Perini’s engineers. To this end she was equipped with an extra 30T of lead ballast in her keel box (we’ll come to that in a bit) compared to the 56m ketch rigged sister ships. This was to counter the extra mass, higher center of gravity and higher center of effort (from sailing forces) that the sloop rig created.

The main lead ballast was contained in a more or less rectangular box (keel box) attached below the canoe shaped part of the hull. The precise mass of this ballast I do not recall, but it’s probably around 200T or so. In the center part of this box there is the moveable keel, which weighed around 60T and extended almost 6m below the keel box when lowered. This arrangement means that the majority of the righting moment of the vessel comes from the main ballast… the moveable keel acting more as a centerboard to reduce sideslip under sail (leeway)…

3. Stability All yachts such as Bayesian are delivered with a “Stability information Book”. This document is approved by the flag state of the boat and defines the loading and operation limits. It also contains information on the righting characteristics. The operational limitations defined in the stability book must be adhered too at all times which is the responsibility of the master.

One section of the Bayesian Stability book related to the use of the moveable keel… and defines when it must be lowered. In this vessel’s case it was required to be lowered when using sails, and/ or when over 60 nautical miles offshore (regardless of whether sailing or only using engines). At all other times, it could be in the raised position.

The stability book also contains information regarding righting angles and the watertight integrity of the hull. There are two important numbers here… Angle of Vanishing Stability (AVS) and the Downflooding Angle.

The Angle of Vanishing Stability is the angle of heel at which the vessel righting moment reaches zero, meaning that the vessel will not return to upright. Again, I forget the actual numbers for this, but the figures would be around 90 degrees with the moveable keel lowered and 75 degrees with it raised.

The Downflooding Angle is much more important though in the scenario we are talking about. This is the angle of heel at which water will start to enter the vessel (usually through engine room or accommodation ventilation ducts)… once this starts the vessels is in serious trouble as stability is quickly reduced or lost due to the flooding.

The downflooding angle for Bayesian was around 40-45 degrees… much less than the AVS. So, unless the vent dampers are closed (which with HVAC systems and generator running they would NOT be as they need to be open for that), the vessel will start to flood rapidly if heeled more than the downflooding angle.

4. Hull Openings Bayesian had only one shell door in the hull, on the port side aft. As this was very close to the waterline, it was rarely used (remembering the extra 30T of ballast mentioned earlier… this caused the water line to be 100mm higher than other 56m Perinis, hence much closer to the bottom of the shell opening meaning it could only be opened in flat calm conditions… 100% it was NOT open at night)

There are no opening windows or portholes, which are all made from laminated marine glass bonded to the hull & superstructure.

Other deck hatch / superstructure openings that breach the watertight integrity on Bayesian are on or close to the centerline of the vessel. For these to be taking water if open, the vessel would have to be heeled way beyond the Downflooding Angle mentioned earlier, and hence already flooding via ducting/vents.

Only one opening was located far from the centerline, and could be vulnerable to downflooding at lower angles of heel… this is the deck access to the lazarette area towards the stern. However, as it is located on the port (left) side of the aft deck, it would be unlikely to be an initial factor in this scenario as we know that Bayesian was knocked down to starboard, and as such this hatch, even if opened as crew were on deck etc, would have been one of the later parts to submerge.

5. Summary The vessel Bayesian was sound and seaworthy by design, and to my knowledge well maintained as such. However, heeling her to more than around 45 degrees while in normal operational state could result in flooding and subsequent loss if the flooding could not be controlled.

The weather conditions that could have created these extreme circumstances can indeed occur with very little warning and being so localized are difficult to prepare for, leaving a very short time for the crew to react.

How the vessel came to be taken outside her operation limits is what the investigators will need to determine, which I’m sure they will.

Broker's Comments

The Nova 27 is actually just short of 28' in length but even more impressive, she feels like a thirty footer when you walk her decks. A long fin keel, relatively heavy displacement and a handsome sheer line mark her out as a west coast yacht. She's rugged, well built and sea kindly with the potential for some serious passage making. Her accomodation iwould be comfortable for four but ideal for two and she benefits from a full cockpit cover and eberspacher blown air heating. However, she requires some work to bring her back to a state which she deserves, cosmetically at least. She has lain neglected ashore for the last two years and is sadly for sale due to ill health - she could be launched and sailed as she is as there is nothing mechanically or structurally wrong as far as we can tell. She would reward a new owner who can see beyond the boatyard grime, and at a bargain basement price! These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Tensions and hostility against america’s cup sailing competition ‘for the rich’ in barcelona.

Resentment against the effects of massive tourism has been brewing for years in Barcelona, and that sentiment has reached new heights this summer precisely as the America’s Cup , the world’s premier sailing competition, starts and becomes the latest target of protests and criticism.

Protesters are blasting the oldest sporting race in the world that runs from August 22 to October 27 as ‘elitist and opaque’, claiming that it’s “just for rich people,” driving up prices for locals and putting the Spanish city under more pressure.

The Platform Against the America’s Cup, created last year to fight “against an event that will generate mass tourism and is already causing the massive diversion of housing to seasonal rentals,” as stated on their site, has said that new protests against the event are being organized as six teams compete to claim the 37th victory of the yacht race .

“A lot of people involved in the race have taken up long-term rents on apartments in the city center and pushed up prices for local people,” Martí Cuso of the Platform warned. “There will be protests coming in the first week of September.”

According to the daily La Vanguardia of Barcelona, “the America's Cup 2024 disguises the agony of beach clubs in Barcelona and all Catalonia.”

The article explains how, paradoxically, the celebration in Barcelona of the oldest regatta in the world coincides with the demolition of local nautical clubs. “This global event hides the anguish of Catalan sailing clubs threatened by a rigid enforcement of the State Coastal Law.”

“The great legacy that the Cup will bring for Barcelona is the recovery of the coast,” Barcelona’s mayor told El Periodico newspaper.

Looking for “Quality Tourism”....for the rich

From the official side, The America’s Cup — the ultimate sporting competition for the super-rich — is, in fact, an effort by city officials to attract “quality, rather than quantity” tourism.

The yacht competition is sponsored by the luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton , which in late May had already organized a star-studded fashion show in the Park Güell, one of Barcelona’s most popular tourist attractions, designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí, that caused serious clashes between residents protesting the closure of the park for the glitzy event and baton-wielding police charging at protesters.

Since then, anger has been growing over the fact that the city is being overrun by tourists and glitzy international events to the detriment of local life.

“Local people say they have been bombarded with calls from estate agents and speculators wanting to buy their homes to cash in on the event, which they say is pushing up rents” the Guardian writes.

Displaced by the crowds

Much of the local population has already been driven out of the areas of Barcelona most affected by mass tourism and campaigners fighting for more stringent controls argue that “rather than attracting a ‘better’, high-spending type of tourist, events such as the America’s Cup simply bring more people to a city already struggling to cope with the mass of visitors.”

Those who live near hot spots in the city are frustrated with daily life where, as reported in the New York Times , they feel “displaced by the crowds; pollution along the waterfront where massive cruise ships dock; and everywhere, it seems, an apparent disregard for local culture.”

Jaume Collboni, the socialist mayor of Barcelona, has said that the contest will bring €1.2 billion in revenue for the city, and create jobs. Critics, on the other hand, say that the potential income from the lavish competition will be enjoyed by few as the tournament itself is followed mostly by the elites.

“This is not like the Olympics, where people are interested in the sport,” Cuso told the web news site i . “This is just for rich people who can afford to go and see the yachts on their own boats at sea.”

He went further to explain that the yachts are sponsored by luxury brands that want to use Barcelona to promote their products.

America's Cup trophy

Tensions and hostility rising

Tensions over tourism that finally boiled over into outright hostility has triggered splashy headlines globally, such as the incident last month when some 3,000 residents took to the streets to protest against tourism , some squirting visitors on the city’s famed boulevard Las Ramblas with water guns.

In 2023, 12 million tourists visited Barcelona, a city of 1.6 million residents, making it the favorite destination in Spain. This year, tourism officials ex[ect at least 13 million visitors.

“Their impact includes skyrocketing housing prices, dirty beaches, crowded thoroughfares and the transformation of historic neighborhoods into what locals refer to as “theme parks,” The New York Times writes.

Barcelona is the second Spanish city to host the competition. Valencia hosted two consecutive editions in 2007 and 2010.

Security reinforcements

As for the multi-million pound America’s Cup, a major security operation has been launched around the event and competition areas with more than 650 police deployed in land, six boats patrolling the sea and helicopters flying above Barcelona. The Civil Guard has also deployed divers to reinforce security at sea.

Following years of technological innovation and hundreds of millions of euros of investment from super-rich backers, the Emirates Team New Zealand will be defending the title against challenges by boats from Italy, Switzerland, France, the U.K. and the U.S.

At the round-robin stage, which will last until September 8, each challenger crew races each other twice, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals. Those Challengers of Record will face-off against the reigning champions in a series of races in October.

Most of the teams have had established bases for training in Port Vell, the city’s old port, since last year.

The America’s Cup was first staged on the Isle of Wight in 1851 and is claimed to be the oldest international sporting event in the world. It was last held in 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand, and was won by the hosts.
