A TIMELESS CROSSOVER

03_Azimut_Magellano30_Giu22_0385 (2)

The exteriors of the Magellano 30M are designed by Ken Freivokh. The vision that guided his design of the lines was to create an object of timeless, exquisite beauty. Destined for long-range cruising, she combines comfort and safety with high bulwarks and large windows to ensure constant contact with the beauty of the sea.

THE UNIQUE NATURE OF THE VOYAGE

Azimut-Magellano30M 0261

The interiors are conceived by Vincenzo De Cotiis, a leading architect and designer with a famously artistic touch. For De Cotiis, a yacht is first about the journey and then about the living environment and, as such, his design reflects the sense of uniqueness that characterizes every moment of a voyage. The unconventional interpretation of seaworthiness permeates thoughtfully curated environments that play with the generous flow of light. Every element, from furnishings to design to layout, reflects the organic shape and natural colors of the sea.

WHEN FIBERGLASS BECOMES ART

Azimut-Magellano30M working hands

The unconventional beauty of Magellano 30M manifests in myriad ways. Vincenzo De Cotiis and Azimut Yachts thrust fibreglass into the spotlight with a specially developed variant for this project. Usually a material that is forced to maintain a low profile, here it is meticulously worked, embellished and polished to become a stunning, innovative stylistic element that unashamedly takes center stage. Instead of its usual coarse, unfinished appearance, fiberglass has been transformed into something noble, profound and tactile. A true work of art of high scenic presence.

Azimut-Magellano30M DJI_0554

FLOODED BY LIGHT AND SOAKING IN CHARM

The unique main deck master basks in the wonders of two full-height windows. A perfect playground for the abundant natural light, from the unusually shaped furnishings to the fine and rich materials, every detail contributes to an environment far beyond traditional conceptions, yet warmly welcoming with an aura of organic wellbeing.

AZIMUT DUAL MODE HULL

The Dual Mode hull is a highly efficient semi-planing hull designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20% at medium speeds* , guaranteeing superior navigation comfort in a wider range of sea conditions. The double-chine hull, combined with the vertical bow, minimizes the impact of waves and thus offers greater freedom of navigation, cruising comfortably at low speeds for extended durations as well as at higher speeds.

*compared to vessels of the same weight and size with a traditional hard-chine hull

Azimut_TF-Magellano30M_Zero-Emission-Hotel-Mode

A 130kW/h lithium-ion battery pack can support the yacht’s hotel load for up to 4 hours during the day and up to 8 hours at night. Now, it’s possible to enjoy the full superyacht experience without the noise, vibration and emissions of the generators, making daytime activities more pleasant and nighttime relaxation more peaceful.

Azimut_TF_Air-treatment

A UTA air extraction system continuously refreshes and treats the onboard environments. The staterooms below deck benefit in particular from the continuous flow of clean air from the outside, filtered to eliminate the majority of airborn particles and odors.

Mallcolm mckeon yacht design unveiled the blackcat 30..

The BlackCat 30 concept is a very stlish 30m Catamaran, designed by Malcolm McKeon for the brand BlackCat Superyachts with interior styling by m2atelier. Blackcat 30 Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design

“The cruising catamaran market is the largest growth sector in midsize yachts today. We believe this trend will continue and eventually will become common throughout the superyacht sailing scene. The large volume and stable platform a BlackCat multihull provides is the logical solution for comfortable cruising”, said Mitch Booth, founder of BlackCat Superyachts .

“We are very proud to be part of this extraordinary team in such a unique project. We try to integrate and connect the interior design with the lines, characteristics and performances of the exterior design in order to achieve a continuous atmosphere and energy. Contemporary, lightness, comfort and luxury blend together in these one-of-a-kind spaces that any superyacht owner expects to see. Technology and craftsmanship are balanced in every aspect of the design to create exceptional spaces” , said Marijana Radovic and Marco Bonelli, BlackCat interior designers from m2atelier.

Ferretti Yachts

What is the price of a sailing catamaran ?

Before purchasing a catamaran, the question of price necessarily arises. Do you know the average price of a multihull, larger or smaller, new or used, to sail as you envision? How is the price of a catamaran determined, and what are your options for buying your future boat? Nautitech takes a look at the subject.

What is the price of a catamaran ?

When talking about the price of a multihull, there are two situations to be differentiated. The first concerns the purchase of a new catamaran, just out of the shipyard or "delivered". The second case involves acquisition of a boat that has already sailed, that has received passengers on board and that has, perhaps, been lived in: this is a pre-owned catamaran. In this article, we will examine the price of a sailing catamaran, new or pre-owned, and we will voluntarily disregard any motor catamaran.

The price of a new catamaran

If you're wondering how much a new catamaran costs, you've probably done some research already. You must have noticed that the purchase price of a catamaran varies enormously, and this is normal: there are many very different lines of multihulls, which do not correspond to the same owners or the same ways of sailing :

There are brands such as Bali, Excess or Lagoon which, above all, want to offer comfort and volume in catamarans, for the purpose of living on board. There are also shipyards that build very performance-oriented catamarans, such as HH Catamarans, Catana, Gunboat, Fountaine Pajot or Outremer catamarans. And then there are Nautitech catamarans, which want to be positioned in the middle, balanced between comfort and performance. Often, the range of Nautitech vessels is compared to the monohull ships of the Amel or Grand Soleil plans.

In this article, we could have stated the average price of a new catamaran. But it is, in reality, an amount that is very difficult to assess and, above all, very unrepresentative. There are catamarans available for 350,000 €, 500,000 €, and some for more than a million euros...

Let's say that the first price of a new habitable multihull, with no particular option, is about 350,000 €. Also, many catamarans are offered by their shipbuilders at a price of between 450,000 € and one million euros. Beyond 1,000,000 €, a catamaran can be considered very high-end. As for the price of a luxury catamaran, it can easily reach several million euros !

What is the pricing policy of Nautitech ?

For several months, the Nautitech yard worked on evolution of the commercial offer proposed to amateur sailors. With the help of the brand's resellers, the sales, marketing, product and purchasing teams, as well as the Nautitech design office, worked together to develop new commercial proposals based on customer profiles.

"We have relied on the recurrence of options chosen by Nautitech customers in recent years, to create a new standard that makes sense. Our goal was to design a commercial offer that is better suited to demand, with which future owners will be able to identify more easily. explains Laura Gobbo, Sales Administration Manager at Nautitech Catamarans.

Thus, since the first quarter of 2024, the Nautitech teams have been happy to be able to offer a richer commercial offer, including solutions that are more in line with the needs of amateur sailors. And, a highlight of this new offer, each Nautitech catamaran model – the Nautitech 40 Open, the Nautitech 44 Open and the Nautitech 48 Open – is now delivered in a "Ready To Sail" version !

No need to add a significant number of options before you can actually take control of your boat: anti-fouling, preparation of masting, supply of essential equipment such as the anchor or the autopilot... all the essentials have been taken into account by the shipyard teams.

Of course, owners are always free to add one or more options to their vessel, depending on their future sailing program and wishes. Three "packs" exist today and are available in addition :

Boost Your Sail

The first pack, called "Boost Your Sail", was designed by the Nautitech teams for all navigators looking for performance. It is composed of a set of technical sails, as well as a particularly resistant standing rigging. Carbon reinforcements on the mast partitions and rear beam complete the extension.

Ocean Cruising

As a second possible addition, the "Ocean Cruising" pack is dedicated to owners who dream of a great voyage and foresee one or more long-distance cruises. This pack aims to optimise the energy and autonomy on board the catamaran, through the installation of equipment such as a specific battery area, a desalination unit and adapted solar panels.

Finally, the "Lifestyle" pack has been designed for crews who plan to live on their catamaran. It is equipped with specific equipment that will allow them to better contend with life on board: for example, a complete closing cover for the rear cockpit, additional sun protection, and adapted solutions for lighting or toilets.

Finally, because a performance-seeking navigator can also seek habitability, or a tourdumondist (globetrotter) can, in addition to autonomy, be interested in performance, the different options can be combined.

A single watchword for Nautitech : adapt to all your projects !

The price of a pre-owned catamaran

If you want to buy a pre-owned catamaran, you still have the opportunity to invest very different amounts.

First, you should understand that it is very difficult to find, even used, a catamaran for under 20,000 € that is habitable. Catamarans under 50,000 € are usually sport catamarans, or very old vessels that require major repair work before they can sail.

The prices of pre-owned habitable sailing catamarans start at around 70,000 €, for vessels measuring 10 to 12 metres in length. At this price, the vessels have already sailed for several decades.

Pre-owned catamarans going for 100,000 € to 200,000 € are generally newer, slightly larger, more habitable or more efficient.

From 250,000 €, one can expect to buy a pre-owned catamaran for long cruises delivered, at the earliest, in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

From 350,000 €, pre-owned catamarans of 15m or more enter the price range.

There are also pre-owned catamarans for more than 500,000 €. At this price, the boats have often been delivered very recently and still have little sailing experience. In most cases, they come from a reputable shipyard or offer particularly high performance.

You should also know that the price of a pre-owned catamaran is determined according to the number of models available on the market: the more a catamaran has been produced in small volume, the rarer and more difficult it will be to acquire this model. Thus, there is a good chance that the resale value of a Nautitech catamaran will be higher than that of a Lagoon catamaran, for example. This is another aspect to be taken into account if you want to buy a catamaran and you already have plans to resell it in a few years !

What criteria cause the cost of a catamaran to vary ?

The amount to be invested to buy a catamaran varies depending on several elements :

The dimensions and volumes of the vessel :

As you can imagine, the price of a catamaran of 15m or of more than 30m, for example, is not the same. Generally, the larger the ship, the larger the interior volumes, and the greater the cost !

Catamaran engine and performance:

The cost of a catamaran is also related to its capacity. It takes into account, for example, the engines that equip the ship, their power and their modes of operation, as well as the set or sets of sails with which it is equipped.

The age and general condition of the vessel :  It makes sense that you don't invest the same amount to buy a new or pre-owned catamaran. Thus, for example, the price for a 30-metre catamaran will not be the same, if it has just left the yard or if it has already sailed for several years. A recent ship will surely present more modern fittings and materials, a more environmentally friendly construction process, and will require an investment of a larger amount. A catamaran that is old, less maintained, damaged or that requires specific work will normally be available at a lower price.

Spaces on board the boat :  Beyond the deck plan, which is decisive, the interior spaces also play a big role in the price of a boat. It’s necessary to consider the number of cabins and toilets, the configuration of the kitchen and mess areas, the presence or absence of a proprietary suite, an office space or, for example, special storage solutions.

Equipment and options :  The cost of a catamaran also depends on how it is equipped. A unit with specific fixtures or equipment, for example, suitable for long cruises, with technical rigging elements or capable of sailing in total energy autonomy, will be more expensive to acquire than a catamaran without distinctive on-board equipment. It all depends, therefore, on the sailing program for which the catamaran was designed, and on its level of customization !

To estimate the price of a catamaran, it is also necessary to calculate the costs of delivery of the boat, launching, handling, and possibly transport. Some shipyards, such as Nautitech, include these services as part of the purchase of a new catamaran. But this is not always the case !

Finally, beyond the purchase price of a new or pre-owned catamaran, it is necessary to take into account recurring annual costs such as mooring, maintenance, boat insurance, fuel... as well as any occasional repair costs.

How to finance your catamaran ?

There are different solutions to finance the purchase of a catamaran. The right choice will mainly depend on your financial capabilities, your program and your navigation plans.

Thus, as a future owner, you will have the choice between several options :

The purchase of a catamaran for cash, which allows a quick purchase, but requires a significant financial investment Traditional financing, via a bank loan, more suited to those who prefer to keep cash for other projects

Lease with Option to Buy, or LOA, for sailors who want to preserve their cash flow and benefit from more flexibility.

The choice of how to finance a catamaran is not to be taken lightly! Before making your choice, it is necessary to be well informed about the different possible options, and to consider all the possibilities.

Catamaran financing solutions

What do you need to know before buying a catamaran ?

Beyond the price of a catamaran, you may still have a few questions. Let's make sure that you have taken all the important aspects into account...

Is a boat license required to sail with a catamaran ?

Operation of a sailing catamaran does not require having a specific permit. This is the case for all sailboats, regardless of the engine with which they are equipped! In motor catamarans, on the other hand, it is necessary to hold a pleasure boat licence, also called a licence to operate motorised pleasure boats.

Thus, in your case, whichever sailing multihull you choose, you will be able to steer your ship. Note, however, that it will be your responsibility, as the captain, to ensure the safety of the entire crew: you will always ensure that navigation is done under the best conditions.

Is boat insurance mandatory for a catamaran ?

No, insuring your motorised or sailing catamaran for boating activities is usually not a requirement. On the other hand, it should be noted that many ports and marinas require amateur sailors to present proof of insurance. Insuring your boat may also be mandatory, if you want to participate in a regatta or a sailing race, sail in a rally, or visit certain countries. Generally speaking, boat insurance is highly recommended.

Before buying a catamaran, it is essential to take a look at the different models available for the budget you want to invest. Each time, consider the financial aspects of the ships with regard to your plans! Once this work is done, you will be able to choose the most suitable catamaran for you and your future activities.

Catamaran Tiki 30 : Polynesian freedom from cat legend James Wharram

Marc Bielefeld

 ·  29.10.2022

Having landed in the Swiss mountains as an Australian, Mark Seisun looked for his sea vehicle in Europe; he found the Tiki 30 in Italy

Capital yachts are anchored in the bay of Porto Pino, 90-foot-long sailing villas, mega yachts with Jacuzzi decks and butler service on board. To the left and right are the usual Mediterranean sailing machines. Hardly anything under 60 feet, carbon sails everywhere, hydraulic bathing platforms, stern garages with jet skis and all the bells and whistles. Midsummer reigns over southern Sardinia, the sea a frenzy of turquoise, music blares across the lagoon in the early evening.

At sunset, another vehicle floats into the bay, but it is conspicuously inconspicuous compared to the others. It is minimal and quiet, a small sailing wardrobe, fine lines, flat as a flounder. The boat also stands out in two respects, not only because of its two narrow hulls, but also because of its flag: the Australian national flag flies at the stern. And then there's the skipper. He stands hands-free on a skid at the front, with a peaked cap, sinewy torso, beard and long hair. The small boat turns and drops anchor under sail, as silent as a seagull.

The Tiki 30 is designed to be built by yourself

The man on board unfurls his awning, clears one or two lines and the most important manoeuvre of the day begins: jumping into the warm sea. The small yacht is made for it, the apparently feather-light catamaran floats just half a metre above the water, painted the turquoise colour of the South Seas and with an extremely Polynesian appearance. The hulls are reminiscent of the shape of Tahitian outrigger canoes, the trampolines almost touch the waves, and the white-painted tiller is curved far aft.

However, the most unusual feature of this seaworthy speedster is that, unlike the million-dollar boats, this is a "do it yourself" boat. The catamaran was designed to be built with your own hands - even without being a trained boat builder.

James Wharram, the English pioneer of ocean-going multihulls ( see portrait below ) designed the Tiki 30 in the early nineties. After various other designs by the enterprising sailor - both larger and smaller cats - this was intended to be a throw in the golden mean. A so-called coastal trek design, trailerable, but still made of the material to sail on and even across the oceans. Built to live and travel on. The Tiki 30 is nine metres long, five metres wide and weighs just 1,000 kilograms. A simple, narrow double berth is hidden in each hull, while a flat deckhouse between the hulls provides additional space.

Independence and freedom were the life mottos of Kat designer James Wharram. They characterised his work just as much as the search for particularly simple solutions"

Trampolines fore and aft, storage space in two forecastle boxes, a chart table in the cabin, the mainsail fitted with a short gaff, plus a small furling jib - the Polynesian interpretation of modern sailing is complete: a flat, manoeuvrable yet seaworthy cat that can do pretty much anything - you can even go on safari with it. A fleet of Tiki 30s has already taken to the water on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe to approach herds of elephants and buffalo. Because of its shallow draught, the quiet stalking on the water, but also because of the space it offers for guests, the cat has often been used as a safari boat in Africa.

An idea entirely in the spirit of James Wharram. The wiry Brit was an outdoorsman and sailing minimalist, an adventurer, free spirit, lateral thinker and the enabler of a thousand crazy ideas. In 1953, he designed his first ocean-going catamaran, the "Tangaroa", making the twin-hulled boat acceptable as a cruising yacht. In Trinidad and Tobago in the 1950s, he sat down with sailing icon Bernard Moitessier to refine his designs and ideas. Above all, his idea of the simplest possible lifestyle on the water captivated many: Freedom and independence were Wharram's motto - even without a big wallet. The Tiki 30 found so many fans for good reason: James Wharram sold over 2,000 blueprints of his mid-range runabout. The sea-loving catamaran pope died in winter 2021. But the cult around his lightweight catamarans continues.

Textile connections replace metal

The next morning, the outgoing Australian skipper invites us on board to sail. The cat floats weightlessly free from its mooring, the sails are quickly set and the vehicle gets underway. Nodding cheerfully, the "Kaitiaki" strolls through the small waves, runs surprisingly high on the wind, tacks, jibes. Mark Seisun, 52, bought the cat second-hand in Sardinia, refurbished it, renewed many of the details and made it fit for purpose himself.

Some design details immediately catch the eye. Loose, simple connections wherever you look: Instead of metal fittings, expensive blocks and elaborate bolting, ropes are the connecting solution in many places - just like in ancient Polynesia, where the early inhabitants of the South Seas knotted almost everything together with coconut fibre to build their boats. The trapeze, on which the forestay is tensioned, was passed through two holes in the tops of the hull with ropes: no screw, no bolt, no jib iron. Only a hand-painted wooden foundation reinforces the sensitive area. "Easy does it," says Seisun, who now knows the cat by heart. "Simple solutions everywhere, that's what makes the design so special."

The same applies to the connection between the two hulls. Wharram swore by beams with flexible contacts in order to minimise the load at the crucial points. The boat should hug the waves - never going against them, but always moving with the sea and its movements through the water. Mark Seisun wanted to renew these important connections. In Sardinia, he sneaked through the garages and looked for old seat belts - now they hold the catamaran's hulls and load-bearing cross struts together: firm and yet flexible enough to enable beautiful, smooth sailing.

The two rudders are suspended in a similar manner, so to speak: with rope loops made of strong, modern rope. No hinges to break, no screws to rust. And to check or replace all the fastenings, all you have to do is steer the cat onto a sandbank, get into shallow water and replace the ropes if necessary. Free fun manoeuvres instead of expensive shipyard visits. Simple. Ingenious. Inexpensive.

Legendary: Wharram's do-it-yourself catamarans

With ideas and solutions of this kind, Wharram catamarans have long since earned a legendary reputation. Over the last 50 years, more than 10,000 Wharram designs of various lengths and sizes have been sold. Self-made catamarans that have now travelled several million nautical miles across the world's oceans. And not one is said to have ever capsized. However, Wharram believed in the philosophy of self-building for other reasons. He once wrote: "In a world of changing values, building your own boat gives you an inner security, it gives you the strength and individuality to live your own life."

Constructing your own boat according to Wharram's plans is like a fast-track boat-building course. Without overly complicated construction phases, without heavy equipment, without utopian materials. It takes 900 to 1,200 hours to build the Tiki 30 yourself. In 2005, designer Wharram estimated the cost of building the cat at 12,000 British pounds, although the sum is of course likely to be considerably higher today.

The cat can be manufactured for 20,000 euros and fitted out for the same amount. The result is an ocean-going boat

Nevertheless, anyone who can build such a handsome and spacious cat for around 20,000 euros is fulfilling a dream - for little money. There is always enough left over for the equipment. With sails, electrics, navigation, personalisation, built-in outboard motor and all equipment, the Tiki 30 costs between 30,000 and 40,000 euros. Brand new. That leaves room to breathe. Leaves room to do what it's all about: setting off and sailing away. Exactly Wharram's philosophy.

A damn great ship!

The cat is built from solid boatbuilding plywood and fibreglass, with plans designed for amateurs. The mast is also made of wood: spruce or Alaskan cedar. You quickly realise how to plan the construction phases, how work steps are carried out and how details fit together. Once the hulls are finished, the connections follow and, if required, the small deckhouse. It looks like a space capsule with two flat berths for adults, plus a chart table, navigation corner, storage space - and a panoramic view of the sea like on a deck saloon yacht.

On the water, the cheerful cat shows all the qualities for which it is so often praised. It starts quickly, sails well and is stable on course. The smaller version, the Tiki 26, has often crossed the Atlantic with these qualities. The Brit Rory McDougall even sailed around the world in an even smaller Tiki 21 from 1991 to 1997. He called his cat "Cooking Fat", an inversion of "Fucking Cat", nothing more than a bitter declaration of love to the adventurous Wharram design. Clearly speaking: a damn great ship!

Tiki owner Mark Seisun

An Australian in love with water

On board, owner Mark Seisun points high into the sails. Another special feature of the boat: The mainsail rises at the halyard, the gaff is trimmed, with a front zip-fastened canvas pocket completely enclosing the mast - just like a windsurfer's sail. This gives the sail a perfect leading edge, an optimal profile. For the Australian, however, it is by no means just the technical and sailing details that make this boat so special to him. His "Kaitiaki" means more to him. She is his personal oasis of freedom in a cramped, crowded Europe.

Seisun is a water person. He grew up in Sydney, sailing with his father from an early age. A small family yacht stood on the trailer in the garage driveway, always ready for trips on the waters outside the front door. He and his family sailed off, pulling the boat onto the beaches of the islands in the evenings. They slept on the beaches, on the boat, swam, dived, hunted moray eels, parrotfish and snapper while spearfishing. A life in the great Australian freedom. At the age of eleven, with an Investigator 563, they travelled to the Whitsundays, to Hamilton Island, and hid in the mangroves during storms.

His first boat was a Pacific Westerly, which he sailed along the coast off Sydney. This was followed by tours with pick-ups and small boats along the coast, into the wilderness of the Great Barrier Reef and up into the godforsaken Torres Strait, where there are more saltwater crocodiles swimming in the sea than people to be seen on land. Australia - sailing among sharks, corals and tropical magic. And he never wanted to stop being in the water. As an engineer, Seisun later strapped his windsurfing boards to the top of his lorries to whizz through the blue waves even at the most remote construction sites in the bush.

The Tiki 30 is Seisun's Australia in Europe

One day, when he is in his mid-thirties, he takes a huge step. Seisun meets a Swiss woman, they have sons Tayne and Jai - and decide to move to Europe. For Mark Seisun, it is a patent jumping ship to another world. Mountains. Winter. Houses everywhere, people everywhere. A neat idyll, no crocodiles far and wide. Just Switzerland. "It's very beautiful there, no doubt about it," he says. "But I was landlocked - I was suddenly stuck in the country, on dry land."

From Australia, the water man ended up in Switzerland. His escape from dry land is the cat in the Mediterranean

What to do? When he couldn't stand it any longer, he looked around for a boat. A sailing boat. It had to be simple, taste of freedom and remind him a little of his distant homeland. Then he found the Tiki 30 in the classified adverts. The cat was down in Sardinia. Blue sea, hot summers, a season that lasts all year round. He has now owned his "Kaitiaki" for three years. He has refloated it, painted the boat a pretty white and turquoise like the Aarafura Sea, and has already sailed it around Sardinia to the bays, beaches and grottos in the south of the islands. Since then, his "Kaitiaki" has been his escape point. His Australia in Europe.

The dream: back to Australia with the Tiki

Their two sons Tayne and Jai are also on board. They come to Sardinia again and again in the summers, spending time with their dad on the boat. Sailing, sleeping, fishing, cooking, living on the catamaran, on two runners and the large trampolines, just half a metre above the waves. Like in a faraway land, like in the atoll of dreams. But the two are slowly growing up. Training awaits, a career, their own path through life. During these days, the three of them sail across the blue sea together once again, setting off southwards the next morning: 120 nautical miles across to Tunisia. An easy exercise for the Wharram cat. A short transcontinental trip on two runners. The boat glides over the waves at seven knots, light, agile and smooth. Like a dragonfly on the wide open sea, like a bird heading for the sun.

And after that? Mark Seisun, Australian blood in his veins and a very Polynesian vehicle under his feet, looks into the distance, strangely enraptured by the question. "Back to Australia with my Kat? That would be great," he says. Atlantic, Caribbean, Pacific. Or the other way round, across the Indian Ocean. A mighty adventure would await, a huge gulp of freedom. In the spirit of the inventor. James Wharram would say: Do it, Mark - that's exactly why I brought this boat into the world.

Large-sized catamarans are appealing due to their ample spacing and comfort. Therefore, a cruising family or couple looking to buy a boat is more likely to go for one of these. But are there small cruising catamarans that provide the performance, comfort, and amenities found in larger boats?

The best catamarans under 30 feet (9.14 m) include the TomCat 6.2, Cadillac 27and 30, Gemini 30, Endeavour 30, and Maine Cat. These time-tested cruising cats are easy to handle, premium built, and are great for daytime sailing, overnight trips, and some even suitable for long-range sea passages.

In this article, you’ll find a list of the best cruising catamarans below 30 feet (9.14 m). Keep reading to discover which catamarans make this list, what they have to offer, their pros and cons, and how much they cost.

If you are unsure whether or not 30ft is too small for your needs, then I suggest you check out another article I wrote named Best Size Catamaran , it will discuss why length matters and how it affects safety.

Unlike most catamarans designed for racing purposes, the TomCat 6.2 is a medium-sized cat that’s well-suited to daytime cruising. It boasts high-quality construction, vacuum-bagged hulls, and a plywood-reinforced deck.

This 20 footer (6.09 m) comes with an 11-foot (3.35 m) beam and not only offers you safety and comfort but performance and versatility as well.

This boat has a centrally placed outboard engine and two rudders that allow it to turn quickly and maneuver confidently into and out of marina slips. The 9.9 hp outboard propels it to speeds of around 8 knots (9.21 mph or 14.8 kph), though the boat has the potential to move faster if desired.

This simpler type of cat (just one engine as an example) also allows for cheaper and easier maintenance. Maintenance costs are something most people underestimate when getting a cat, if you want to get some real numbers from actual sailors then I suggest you read this article (How much does it cost to maintain a cat).

The boat sails with minimal heeling, comfortably accommodate 6-8 people, and you can sail it single-handed or take a crew.

High and narrow hulls bearing arched bottoms allow for a low wetted surface. The hull design provides low resistance and a great deal of reserved buoyancy and also enables you to drive through closely spaced waves.

On most 20-footers (6.1 m), driving through waves generates a smooth but wet ride, but with the TomCat’s enclosed deck (link to parts names explained here ), you are safe and protected behind a windshield and the high bulwark.

The TomCat makes an excellent cruiser because it performs impressively well both under sail and power. It combines the performance of a modern sailing cat with the comfort, style, and convenience of a powerboat. It’s also trailerable since you can detach the hulls from the deck , winch up the deck on a trailer, and slide the hulls underneath.

But the best part is that it’s easy on the pocket, with the price ranging between $36,750 and $44,580 .

Catalac 30 (9M)

The Catalac brand consists of strongly built vessels that sport thick hulls, glass windows, narrow beams, and vertical transoms . Catalac 30 was the first vessel in this popular British cruising line designed by Tom Lack in the late 60s. The boat’s appeal was attributed to its safety, ample spacing, well-built interior, and load-carrying abilities.

These characteristics are extremely important on a safe catamaran, overloading your cat makes it sit lower in the water, increases drag, reduces handling and speed, there is stuff you should know about this (so that you can make an educated buy). I have created an article where I try to explain the basics of a safe cat ( link here )

Sporting 5 berths, a massive galley, plus a cockpit with a sheltered steering position, the 30-foot (9.1 m) Catalac makes an excellent floating home for a cruising family. It sails exceptionally well, doesn’t heel ( heeling explained here ), and delivers a reasonable motor-sailer level of performance.

Furthermore, the hulls provide adequate headroom, allowing those on board to move around comfortably, and there’s enough space on the deck for sunbathing.

prix catamaran 30 metres

The Catalac’s structure features solid fiberglass, chined hulls, and a staggered sheerline that allows easy aft access. With a modest rig that’s easy to handle, the Catalac can deliver top speeds of up to 12-14 knots (13.81-16.11 mph / 22.22-25.9 kph) under sail.

Given that the boat’s design focuses more on comfort than speed, this is a spectacular performance.

Catalac 9M requires a skilled hand when turning into the wind as it is prone to blowing sideways. This is because the boat lacks ballast (which helps in keeping momentum during a tack) but also centerboards ( explained here ).

Skills are always the most essential things to bring aboard and you can acquire them in many ways, my two favorite ways are through NauticEd courses (two free courses here ) or by reading books (my top 15 books here )

Back to the boat! This model came in two versions; the standard layout contained a 30-40hp outboard, while the second option had duo engines. The latter is easier to maneuver into a marina.

prix catamaran 30 metres

These cats retain their value pretty well. However, they might not be easy to come by since most owners find it challenging to get their hands on a larger boat with similar qualities and performance.

A Catalac 30 (9M) goes for between $33,000 and $55,000.

prix catamaran 30 metres

Catalac 27 (8M)

The Catalac 27 8M is a pocket cruiser that boasts a strong reputation for high quality, durability, and strength. Besides, the boat’s design makes it somewhat suitable for bluewater sailing ( understand why the small size is an offshore problem).

Built like a battleship, the boat contains solid fiberglass hulls. Additionally, it comes with double engines, a large cockpit fitted with cushions all around, and features standing headroom in each hull.

prix catamaran 30 metres

Like the Catalac 9M, this boat comes with two different layouts; a twin inboard diesel engine or an outboard engine. The twin-engine models can motor up to 1000 km (621 miles, read more on cat fuel consumption here ) without needing to refuel, while the 70 amps of charge plus water tanks (70 gallons / 265 liters) make these vessels remarkable coastal cruisers.

Catalacs equipped with outboard engines sail faster since you can raise the engine during sailing and are also lighter. This helps to minimize drag . Catalac 8M sports a short but thick mast that helps make the boat stable.

prix catamaran 30 metres

Though small in size, this catamaran packs a lot of features in its small frame. It has a full-sized berth, a large galley that’s almost 8 feet (2.4 m) long, a quarter berth, head, and navigation station.

What’s more, the cockpit is as large as that of a 38 to 40-foot (11.5 to 12.1 m) cat.

Catalac 27 costs about $31,836.

prix catamaran 30 metres

The Endeavour 30

The Endeavour 30 catamaran is a boat characterized by stability, ample deck space, and a spacious interior. It boasts fast cruising speeds under both sail and power.

The boat has mini keels and rudders plus symmetrical hulls separated by a hydra-cell. The latter is a center section with a characteristic V-shape.

The boat’s vacuum-bagged construction helps enhance strength and stiffness while reducing weight. Furthermore, the interior has a fiberglass mold, providing extra strength and rigidity. With sufficient breeze, this vessel can deliver reasonable off-the-wind and doable upwind speeds.

As such, you can expect to attain speeds of about ~10 knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph) on power reaches. Below is a video showing a panoramic tour of the Endeavour 30:

This vessel has the internal capacity of a 40-foot (12.1 m) monohull. And you can tell this from the unique layout merging the cabin and cockpit with wide doors to the numerous features packed into this 30-foot (9.14 m) vessel.

It has a spacious salon, an enormous galley, two queen berth staterooms with plenty of storage space, a head with separate showers, and a sizable U-shaped dinette.

You can get this boat for under $50,000 .

prix catamaran 30 metres

The Geminis by Tony Smith were the United States’s first production cruising cats. Today, these vessels remain the most appealing American-built cruising catamarans. Built between 1981 and 1990, the Gemini 30 does not have a contemporary design, but it works remarkably well for cruisers desiring generous living space in a small affordable sailboat.

At only 14 feet (4.2 m) across, Gemini cats are somewhat narrow. But this mean s they can easily fit into most of the regular marina berths.

Besides, the boats still contain enough interior space for a queen-size double berth and two smaller doubles housed in separate guest rooms.

There’s also a modest but serviceable saloon with duo settees and a collapsible table that can transform into an additional double berth.

prix catamaran 30 metres

For the Gemini 30, this translates to a cruising cat with standing headroom that can comfortably accommodate 3 couples in private cabins or a family with small children. A good-sized galley, a spacious head with a shower, nav desk, and a large comfy cockpit make up the Gemini 30’s cruising palace.

Catamaran layout is highly personal and if you want to learn more about different characteristics then I suggest you read my article Designing the perfect catamaran layout ( Link )

While not that fast, the Gemini 30 will easily outsail the Endeavor 30 discussed above. Its daggerboards (which are explained in detail here ) can point well, and if you keep it light, it can do 7-8 knots (12.9-14.8 km/hr) under sail.

Besides, raising the daggerboards reduces the wetted surface area, and increases the speed downwind.

prix catamaran 30 metres

The Gemini 30 tends to pound and hobbyhorse a little when sailing in choppy waters – particularly when overloaded (more on load carrying capabilities in this article ), but the deep pivoting daggerboards provide stability and lift underwater.

Furthermore, the Gemini’s retractable rudders enable it to venture into shallow waters.

This is a very popular cruising cat that’ll give you a lot of bang for your bucks.

You can find a Gemini for less than $65,000.

prix catamaran 30 metres

Maine Cat 30

The Maine Cat 30 combines premium quality construction materials with the most advanced building techniques to create a lightweight vessel capable of handling most offshore conditions. What’s more, this boat can remain trouble-free for years on end with little effort.

If you are in the market for a simple liveaboard cruiser that you can use for a short weekend getaway or a cruising voyage, this is it.

The boat has a sizable primary stateroom berth with ample overhead space and a dresser fitted with a hanging storage cabinet. The enormous head includes a toilet, sink, 20-gallon (75.71 L) holding tank, vanity, and a pressurized shower.

Covering the open bridgedeck is a permanent hardtop. This spacious bridgedeck can hold quite a crowd and comes with a convertible dinette that turns into an extra berth. If need be, you can even enclose the entire space using acrylic windows or screens. Gabo

prix catamaran 30 metres

The 360-degree visibility from the cockpit allows the captain plus the crew a panoramic view, and all sail controls go back to the cockpit, which is very useful if wanting to sail single-handedly.

I believe that most boats should be set up in this way since sooner or later you might be in a situation where there is only one person to handle the controls, such as in an emergency. But more on that in another article ( Link ).

The Maine Cat 30 is a classic boat that delivers on high-performance multihull sailing. Designed to offer much better performance than catamarans bearing tall and heavy bridge decks, this cat weighs less and suffers less windage thanks to the acrylic windows.

The boat’s interior layout allows for easy cleaning as surfaces sport a smooth gel coat and satin-finished cherry trim. The solid but lightweight furniture bears the same Core-Cell foam core employed on the hull, deck, and hardtop. Plus, there’s ample storage for all your sailing equipment, cleaning supplies, and provisions.

A Maine Cat 30 can cost up to $110,000.

Heavenly Twins 27

The overall design of this well-equipped catamaran makes it a superb pocket cruiser.

Heavenly Twins 27 manages to fit not one but two coachroofs on hulls that are only 27 feet (8.20 m) long. Canoe sterns and a central cockpit separating the duo coachroofs form the boat’s other prominent features.

Famous for their excellent build quality, medium-depth draft, and narrow beams, Heavenly Twins 27 appeals to a wide range of boating enthusiasts.

These include solo sailors, weekend sailors, cruising families, circumnavigators, beginner sailors, and experienced liveaboards such as this famous Youtube channel “Kittiwake”.

The vessels house double cabins in the hulls while the forward starboard contains the heads and, to port, the galley. You can easily access the bar from the well-protected cockpit while the Comfordesk accommodation converts into a double dock.

A stoop through allows access from below-deck to the aft compartment without going through the cockpit. There’s ample storage space throughout the boat, plus you can section off the large stateroom into smaller double compartments if desired.

The price range for this boat is $ 20,098 to $24,193. (I believe that kittiwake is for sale too)

prix catamaran 30 metres

The last cruising catamaran on my list is the Aquilon 26 . This French-built cruising vessel is light in weight and trailerable, which means you can disassemble it in a few hours or transport it as-is.

Designing a boat that is possible to disassemble usually means that it is structurally less strong, which by no means is a problem during coastal sailing but the Aquilon 26 is mostly attractive to sailors who prefer inland lake sailing. It’s also suitable for beginner sailors.

Although there are no real “beginner cats” there are specs to consider if you are a beginner with catamarans, most of them I have listed in another article ( here ). Gabo

This 26-footer (7.92 m) has the potential for good speed though its layout is anything but conventional- which forms part of its appeal.

The cockpit works as the saloon, and a full bimini protects the crew from lousy weather. The starboard hull contains a dinette and galley, and the port has a double berth stateroom. The windows are quite unusual, but they provide lots of light, remarkably enhancing interior visibility.

Aquilon 26 can deliver an average cruising speed of 10knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph).

On a beam reach, you can expect around 25 knots (28.77 mph or 46.3 kph) with an adequate breeze ( I have never sailed at 25knots but researching this boat supposedly it is possible).

You can get this boat for under $50,000.

What Makes Small Cruising Cats Attractive?

Small cruising cats are ideal for sailing along the coast. But that’s not all. Under capable hands, properly fitted smaller cats can also deliver spectacular offshore passages similar to their larger counterpart (Heres a list of full-sized bluewater cats).

They can operate over long cruise ranges, cross oceans , and circumnavigate the globe . Smaller cats are also suitable for day sailing, overnight trips, and coastal or inland voyages.

For most sailors, comfort on board is crucial, so they’ll look for a vessel that guarantees a comfortable cruising experience. The good thing is that smaller vessels provide almost the same qualities and amenities that bigger vessels offer. Plus, you can do quite a bit with the available space, especially if it’s well laid out.

You’ll find that most 30-footer (9.14 m) or more miniature cruising cats comprise a galley, head, bunks, navigation and entertainment electronics, and refrigeration.

Sailors usually talk about these benefits of smaller cats:

  • They’re less expensive. Large boats are costly to buy. They also cost more to hire, maintain, and dock. You can buy a small-sized boat at a much lower price, and parts tend to cost less too. Besides, you get to use smaller sails, winches, and lighter lines than those applicable on a larger boat. And since marine services such as moorings and haul-outs get billed via boat length, a smaller cat makes sailing more affordable.
  • They boast superior builds. Most cruising boats under 30 feet (9.14 m) feature designs that are 30+ years old. In those days, weather forecasts were hard to come by and not as accurate, so boat builders used hulls with thicker fiberglass than the type found in today’s builds. Furthermore, everything in the boat, including rigs, rudders, hulls, keels and decks, was designed to withstand strong winds and high waves.
  • They have simpler systems. This means less time spent fixing and maintaining your boat. For instance, most small cruising cats often lack water-makers, hot water systems, or electric anchor windlasses.
  • They’re easier to handle. Smaller cats are simpler to sail than larger cats. It’s also easier to sail one single-handed or with a small crew.

What is the largest cat on person can sail?

The Disadvantages of Smaller Cruising Cats

Below are some of the most discussed downsides of small cats:

  • They have limited living space, storage, and amenities.
  • Though they don’t heel much, they are less comfortable than larger boats since they get tossed around much more easily in big ocean swells.
  • It’s not easy to accommodate crew for extended periods; hence there are fewer hands to share work.
  • They are slower and take longer to get to their destination.

Though fewer are on the cruising trails than their larger counterparts, small catamarans make ideal cruisers because they are simple, seaworthy, and pocket-friendly.

When choosing the best cat for your needs, focus on quality rather than size. A well-planned 30-footer (9.14 m) is reliable and provides ample space for your accommodation, dining, and relaxation, plus a storage room for provisions and any spare parts you might need.

And if you want even more info than I have presented to you in this article I would recommend a book from Serj, he makes it easy to understand why size matters and how to find a cat suited for your needs (amazon link )

Trimaran Sailing Yacht Blue Coast 160®

A truly sensational appearance:

This BLUE COAST 160` sailing trimaran mega yacht with 3 decks is a fusion of architecture, design, comfort, performance, luxury, economy and technology. The 48m long carbon fibre trimaran yacht was designed by world-renowned naval architect Jean-Jacques Coste.

Description

The BLUE COAST 160` has extendable side hulls. At sea, the overall width of 23 m then offers very stable sailing even in rougher seas. With the side hulls retracted, the yacht, which is only 11 m wide, finds suitable berths in marinas and harbours. The shallow draft allows anchoring close to the most beautiful beaches.

Read here an article about this stunning trimaran from Multihulls World magazine no. 191.

The energy concept is also revolutionary: all the energy required on board comes from renewable sources. Of course, the latest battery management system (BMS) technology with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries is part of the overall concept. This means that exclusive ports can be entered with renewable energy. Additional requested energy can be generated by an optional hybrid propulsion system.

The customised luxurious interior design is also by Jean-Jacques Coste. Of course, a garage for the owner's car "matching" the yacht has also been thought of; it can get on and off the yacht via the retractable platform.

With a twinkle in the eye, here is a note on the term "yacht" : At the christening of the new "Brittania" by Queen Elizabeth II, a journalist asked why a vessel of 126 m length with a crew of 236 and 5.769 GRT could be be called a "yacht"? A member of the Royal Family gave him a convincing answer: "The use of the term yacht does not depend on the type, length, weight or size of the crew of a vessel, but on the status of the owner!"

Design according to your preferences

The design of the Blue Coast 160 can be adapted to your ideas as you desire in terms of length, width, number and layout of cabins, interior fittings and furnishings.
