The specification of this Dufour 412 includes solar panels, electric windlass, High Aspekt sail, heating and extensive Raymarine navigation equipment. This Dufour 412 has a deck layout with double helm station, folding bathing platform and spacious cockpit - both with teak decking - and a cockpit table with folding side sections. The sail package includes a mainsail, furling genoa and a High Aspekt, operated from the cockpit. The side decks lead to a flat foredeck; solar panels are installed on the roof of the saloon. The Netherlands has a coastline of over 520 kilometres, of which 353 kilometres are along the North Sea and the rest along the Wadden Sea and the Westerschelde. Can I hire a sailboat without a licence?

Would you like to charter a sailboat? In many cases it is possible, yes, to hire without a licence, but in these cases it is a good idea to have, and demonstrate, sailing experience.

  In the Netherlands, there are three options;

• You don't need a licence if the boat is smaller than 15 metres
• A navigation licence 1 is required for sailboats larger than 15 metres on rivers, canals and lakes.
• With a sailing certificate 2 you can sail your boat on the open sea and on large inland waters like Ooster- and Westerschelde, the IJsselmeer and the Waddenzee.

How much does it cost to rent a sailboat in the Netherlands?

Renting a sailboat in the Netherlands is relatively cheap compared to other European countries. Prices vary depending on the type of sailboat, the location and the tourist season (high or low).

The water sports season in the Netherlands starts in March/April and ends in October. It is possible to find a great diversity of sailboats throughout the year, including in winter.

Various types of sailboats, such as the Bavaria or Beneteau, can be rented by the hour, by the day, half a week, weekend or whole week. Exchange days are usually on Fridays and Sundays, but it is worth discussing these details directly with the boat owner.

The Wadden Sea region stretches from Den Helder in the Netherlands to Esbjerg in Denmark, is 500 km long and has an average width of 20 km. Due to the great natural value of the area, the Wadden Sea is listed on the as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, the Wadden Islands are popular tourist destinations for both Dutch and Germans.

During your sailing trip you can spot seals, walk along the coast, dock on one of the islands and climb into one of the lighthouses, sunbathe on the beach or enjoy the terrace of one of the many beach pavilions.

Are you going sailing in the Wadden Sea? Then you'll have to take the tides into account! It is possible that you will be stranded on the sand. In the Wadden Sea there are dozens of places where you can run aground, especially if it is your first time there. Take this into consideration beforehand!

The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands. It has a surface area of 1133 km² and an average depth of 4.4 metres. The lake is located directly in the provinces of Friesland, Flevoland and North Holland. The IJsselmeer is surrounded by several towns and villages where you can easily rent a sailboat and head out on the water!

The most popular towns are Makkum, Stavoren, Lemmer, Lelystad and Enkhuizen. Due to the fact that there are virtually no currents in the IJsselmeer, this is a perfect destination for both beginner and advanced sailors.

Location description

From marina Lelystad Haven it goes in south-west direction to Amsterdam. Here we moor either in Six Haven or in Marina Amsterdam and spend 1 to 2 days in Amsterdam down to your‘ s whim.

Then we lock through Oranje Sluis and the North Sea Canal to IJmuiden. Here we spend the night in the Marina IJmuiden or lock the same or the next day with the accumulating water on to the North Sea island of Texel (50sm, approx. 5 h +, with accumulating water up to 3 knots faster!)

We spend the night in the Qudeschild marina in Texel. It is recommended to rent a bike and explore the island with its nice little places. The long sandy beach on the North Sea coast of the island is especially beautiful! Here in the marina Qudeschild you can spend a second night due to manifold amenities in the area. A special tip for nature lovers or families with children is a visit to the seals sanctuary in the Ecomare Nature Museum on Californiaweg near the North Sea coast halfway along the island.

With accumulating water we reach the lock Kornerderzand. Here we lock back into the IJsselmeer with the destination Hindeloopen or Stavoren.

From here you can set your course towards Enkhuizen the next day. Enkhuizen is an attractive and diverse shopping city. The cozy city center offers various small and large shops as well as a number of creative markets. With old-fashioned shops and modern boutiques as well as numerous cafes, shopping here makes fun.

Then we sail through the Markermeer back to Lelystad, past the artificially created group of islands of the Marker Wadden, a beautiful nature reserve.

The capital of the province of Flevoland is named after the builder of the final dike, Cornelis Lely. The place was built on a polder about 5 m below sea level. Lelystad is considered a green garden city with modern architecture. We recommend a visit to the nearby Batavia shipyard where historical wooden ships are reproduced. At the port of Lelystad, the almost 30 km long bank towards Enkhuizen begins behind the lock. When everything was still a North Sea bay in the past, the heavily loaded ships sailed from here with their treasures from Asia and brought wealth to the cities.

Welcome to the canal city. Water has always shaped life in Amsterdam. Since its foundation around 700 years ago, people have come from all over the world to settle here. Over time, the city became a melting pot of cultures. The Amsterdam canal belt with its countless colorful houseboats is part of the Unesco World Heritage Amsterdam, Holland's secret capital, Venice of the north, red light district and bicycle metropolis, a city where you have to stay once in your life.

IJmuiden is a major seaport in the Netherlands. The city owes its foundation and its name (mouth) to the construction of the North Sea Canal, which connects the city and the port of Amsterdam directly with the North Sea. Coming from Amsterdam at the end of the North Sea Canal, IJmuiden is an important junction in shipping and is often referred to as the offshore terminal of Amsterdam. IJmuiden is also Holland's largest fishing port. Early in the morning, fish auctions in the action halls offer the opportunity to experience Holland off the beaten track. Getting up early is rewarded with the view of the beautiful lighthouse in the morning light. Other sights of IJmuiden are the four locks, of which the Noordersluis, with a length of 400 m, is the largest in Europe.

Texel is the largest of the five Frisian islands in the Wadden Sea. It is 15 km long and 9 km wide. The flat island scores with its seemingly endless sandy beaches on the west coast. The lovely small towns and nature reserves as well as the seals sanctuary can be explored by bike. Typical for the island are the thatched, listed “Gulf houses” that serve as sheep stables.

Hindeloopen

Hindeloopen was once one of the wealthiest port cities in Friesland and has a long maritime tradition. With its old cobblestone streets, it is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe. Life runs a bit slower here and you feel like you are in a picturesque village from a fairy tale book.

Stavoren is the oldest city in Friesland. The Hanseatic city is one of the largest leisure harbors. The name Stavoren is closely related to the type of ship “Staverse Jol”, which was once used for fishing by the Anchovies. Today, this form of ship, with an onion-shaped bow, long keel with little draft, is still used on robust steel cruisers.

In Enkhuizen at the harbor, old merchant and warehouse buildings provide a picturesque backdrop. Enkhuizen was in the 17th century, in the "Golden Century", the richest and most powerful city on the Zuiderzee and is the most beautifully preserved old town on the IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzee Museum in the old packing house is interesting. It provides  an almost complete insight into the history of the Zuiderzee, the fight against the water, shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, art and commerce.

Lelystad has an oceanic climate. To experience mild or pleasant temperatures in Lelystad, you should plan your yacht charter between May and September. The water temperature during these months is between 12°C and 20°C. In July, the highest average temperature is around 21°C.

With a 450-km North Sea coastline and numerous inland lakes, rivers and canals, it is not surprising that sailing and boating are popular leisure activities for the Dutch. 1 in every 32 people in the Netherlands owns a boat.

BOAT REGISTRATION IN HOLLAND

Before a motorboat, watercraft or jet ski (which can travel faster than 20 kph) can be operated on waterways in the Netherlands, it must be registered with the Dutch department of motor vehicles (RDW). If the watercraft is already registered in Germany, Belgium or the United Kingdom, it does not need to be re-registered in the Netherlands.

To register a boat the first time, go to the RDW website and submit the pre-registration form with the requested details about the watercraft. The data required includes:

• Take a clear photo of hull and engine number
• Rompnummer (the hull number, also known also the WIN or CIN)
• Bouwjaar (construction year)
• Vessel color, name and dimensions
• Type of Motor
• Vermogen (power)
• Motornummer (engine number)

Submit the form by logging in with DigiD and paying the fee due with iDEAL (currently €65 to register a vessel for the first time, €34.90 to transfer a registration). If you want to register the boat in the name of your business, you will need to provide a copy of the business extract from the KvK (chamber of commerce) issued within the past 12 months.

If everything is in order, you will receive the registration certificate within 10 business days. From that point, the vessel is registered in your name.

NOTE: During the high season (May – September) processing times can be up to 3 weeks.

The boat registration must always be carried when out boating.

MAKING CHANGES TO A BOAT REGISTRATION

Any changes to a watercraft must be documented in the boat’s registration. This is done by submitting a registration change form to the RDW.

Have your registration certificate handy. If you do not have it, a replacement registration certificate must be requested before you can make a change to it. Log in with DigiD, fill in the requested information from your registration certificate, fill in change(s) you are requesting to the registration, submit the form and pay the relevant fee with iDEAL (current fee is €18.10).

If everything is in order, you will receive the adjusted registration certificate within 10 business days.

Be aware, changes can only be requested for: engine details, vessel color, dimensions and type. Changes cannot be made to: hull number, construction year or manufacturer (brand).

TERMINATION OF BOAT REGISTRATION

If the watercraft is disposed of, sold to someone in another country or sold to a person in the Netherlands who fails to register it under their own name, you must request to have the current registration terminated .

Log in with your DigiD, select the vessel you want to de-register and fill in details. You will receive an email confirmation that the vessel is no longer registered in your name.

There is no fee for stopping a registration.

DUTCH BOATING & SAILING LICENSES

You do not need a license to operate a leisure boat or marine craft smaller than 15 meters on Dutch inland waterways unless it is equipped with a motor enabling it to travel faster than 20 kilometers per hour. A license is required for boats longer than 15 meters…

• A Dutch small-vessel sailing license (‘ klein vaarbewijs ‘), or the international equivalent, is required if the watercraft: – is longer than 15 meters – is shorter than 15 meters but capable of speeds in excess of 20 kph (includes jet skis) – is used for commercial activities and between 15-20 meters in length
• A Dutch large-vessel sailing license (‘ groot pleziervaartbewijs ‘), or the international equivalent, is required if the vessel is 25-40 meters in length.

Since 01 January 2020, CBR  is the organization which handles exams and issues sailing licenses in the Netherlands.

DUTCH BOATING SPEED LIMITS

Open waterways and large lakes, such as the Ijsselmeer, do not have set speed limits. Most smaller waterways and canals have speed limits ranging from 5-9 knots per hour.
