Indeed these are some great yachts! Quite big they support around 12 guests + the crew, renting one such beauty for an expedition would be around $95.000 non-season and $160.000 in the season. 12 small business owners could aford such an expedition as a life experience and I believe that it’s totally worth it.

Horacio Bozzo isn’t mincing words when it comes to his new superyacht . The Italian designer claims the new 164-footer, known as Enzo, has the “biggest sundeck of the market.” That’s just one of the vessel’s draws, though.

Axis Group Yacht Design , the sister company of Bozzo’s eponymous studio, spearheaded naval architecture and paired a sleek steel hull with a lightweight aluminum superstructure. According to Bozzo, the focal point is the aft outdoor area on the main deck. Spanning nearly 1,500 square feet, it features an open-plan beach club with an infinity pool, an alfresco dining area and fold-out balconies on both sides of the hull. Not to be outdone, Enzo’s giant sundeck measures almost 1,600 square feet and comes fitted with a covered dining table and lounge, another infinity pool and a day head.

With a volume of 498 GT, Enzo has a generous interior with six luxurious suites to accommodate up to 12 guests. Forward on the main deck, the full-beam owner’s suite is outfitted with panoramic windows for sweeping ocean views. The upper deck sports another large cabin that can be used as a VIP, a children’s playroom, an office or a gym, while the lower deck houses two VIPs and two guest cabins. Forward on the lower deck, there are five cabins for crew, as well as a laundry and a storage area. The captain’s cabin, meanwhile, sits on the upper deck behind the wheelhouse.

In terms of grunt, Enzo is equipped with two CAT C32 Acert engines that will push her to a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots. She’s also got a protected garage on the foredeck that can fit a 23-foot tender, a Jet Ski and a rescue tender.

Enzo is expected to hit the seas at the beginning of 2025.

For some owners, the  flybridge sundeck  is the perfect spot to host private parties, for others, it’s a convenient place to add a treadmill or store jet skis.

MIZU | 174 Oceanfast 2004

Have you ever played basketball while underway on a 174-foot yacht? It’s exhilarating. MIZU is a transoceanic superyacht with extensive exterior areas. She technically has two sundecks. The lower deck boasts an open-air basketball hoop and cushioned seating flanked by two massive davits.

The fourth level sundeck hosts a 16-person hot tub, bar, air conditioned day head, outdoor shower, viewing platform, and plenty of sun loungers. Don’t dream about it, be about it —  MIZU is for sale  and located in Miami, Florida.

EXCELLENCE | 150’ Richmond 2010

EXCELLENCE  has an excellent (we had to) sundeck with enough seating areas to comfortably host 12+ guests. The top deck is broken down into 4 different sections. Forward is a centerline Jacuzzi surrounded by sun pads. Aft of the hot tub is al fresco dining, an ideal spot for breakfast or lunch.

Centerline is a full-service bar with a flat-screen TV and a day head. And all the way aft is a multi-purpose space that you could fill with sun loungers, toys, gym equipment, or touch-and-go helicopter operations.

CHESELLA | 124’ Amels 1983

With four massive decks, CHESELLA goes all out with her sundeck. We’re talkin’ Jacuzzi, sun pads, and outdoor bar. The enormous cushioned lounge area aft is the most attractive spot with enough pillows to make a two-story fort.

The bar area amidship features four stools and is the perfect area to gather around for a party. But when it’s time to flick the switch into sunset relaxation mode, you’ll find us in the hot tub forward.  CHESELLA  has one of the best sundeck setups.

SWEET EMOCEAN | 116’ Azimut 2009

Yacht charters know how to upgrade a sundeck for guests.  SWEET EMOCEAN  is a luxury yacht charter with a sundeck made for relaxation. A Jacuzzi, sun pads, dining table, and bar boast a shaded option with a retractable roof for those sunny Caribbean days.

Spending so much time indoors has us itching to get back out into the world: to explore, to visit beloved destinations, to make new memories, and to reunite with friends and family. A superyacht  charter is arguably one of the safer ways to travel the world, and also one of the most fun. We’ve looked at the best charter yachts from the top brokers and handpicked itineraries that really make the most of the open seas, and vessels that have such an extensive list of amenities, toys and special features that you might not ever feel the need to go ashore.

Maltese Falcon

Virgin Islands

One of the most head-turning and instantly recognizable yachts on the water, Maltese Falcon (pictured above) has won more than 18 awards since her launch in 2006. She has all the qualities of a sailing yacht but with the huge spaces and luxuries typically found on a motoryacht, and is one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. Her interior, designed by award-winning firm Ken Freivokh Design, is sleek and modern, and features a vibrant art collection. She has spacious deck areas (the VIP cabin looks out on its own deck space), and the deck can transform into an outdoor cinema by night. Even though the US Virgin Islands are just 1,000 miles from Miami, the spellbinding natural scenery, abundant marine life and secluded spots make it feel like another world. Spend a relaxing eight days sailing around the main islands of St Thomas, St John and St Croix, dropping anchor in isolated bays. Beginning in St Thomas, sail to Magens Bay in the Northside region to spend a lazy day on the nearly mile-long sandy beach, or try out one of Maltese Falcon’s many watertoys (laser sailing dinghies, stand-up paddleboards and anti-jellyfish sea pool, to name a few).

Next you’ll visit Lovango Cay, a small private island between St Thomas and St John. If you want to venture ashore, the island has exceptional walking trails, or drop anchor just north of the island, one of the best spots for snorkeling in the USVI — keep your eyes peeled for nurse sharks. Journey on to Francis Bay, a protected area on St John. The waters surrounding the island are a hot spot for marine life (look out for sea turtles, tropical fish and coral reefs) and, as 60 percent of the island is occupied by the Virgin Islands National Park, St John feels as if it is far removed from civilization.

You’ll also visit Round Bay and Rendezvous Bay on St John — secluded spots that are ideal for spending days out on the water. Explore by tender or jet ski, or fish for your dinner from the shore and have an alfresco dinner in Maltese Falcon’s outdoor dining space. Sail on to St Croix, where you’ll visit Buck Island Reef National Monument. The island has an abundance of wildlife both above and below the ocean, and you can drop anchor at the historic St Croix Yacht Club in Teague Bay to watch the sunset and have the most scenic movie night on the upper deck.

Despite her young age, Formosa is a seasoned traveler: Her intrepid owner took her on an around-the-world tour two years ago, and she has been on the move ever since. Available for charter in Southeast Asia this winter, she is as well-suited to shorter jaunts as she is long, relaxing vacations. The owner’s suite is on the upper deck and has its own study and private terrace; the two VIP cabins on the main deck both have marble en suites; the two double cabins and one twin are on the lower deck. A glass elevator connects the decks.

Formosa’s interiors, by award-winning Dutch yacht design studio Sinot, are fresh and subtle with a few choice pops of color; her exterior spaces are built to enjoy warmer climes. Begin in Phuket, the largest Thai island, and visit stunning beaches — each one offers something different, from the secluded Nui Beach to the lively atmosphere at Patong Beach.

Cruise through Phang Nga Bay, famed for its karsts (limestone cliffs), then south to Ko Phi Phi Don. This is a good spot for scuba diving — or hop in a kayak and explore the quieter bays and caves. Next on the agenda is Koh Ngai. It’s officially part of Koh Lanta National Marine Park, so you can expect picture-perfect beach scenes. The neighboring islands form a triangle, making it easy to island-hop, and the rocky islets of Koh Ma, Koh Chueak and Khon Kaen have great snorkeling sites.

Sail on to Koh Muk, home to the Emerald Cave — it is as magical as it sounds. A gorgeous lagoon surrounded by tropical plants lies just beyond the cave, and between the hours of around 10am and 2pm, the sun shines on the lagoon’s waters and reflects on the tunnel’s walls — resulting in a shimmering emerald display. Cruise on to Koh Rok Nok, which is a protected wildlife habitat that has pretty coral gardens teeming with vibrant tropical fish. You’ll be able to spot them right beneath Formosa ; head to her swim platform for the best view, or snorkel in the warm waters for a closer look.

New Zealand

Since her launch in 2015, Savannah has won a host of awards

Savannah is an incredible vessel to charter — she is as innovative as she is impressive, with stellar eco-credentials to boot. She is the world’s first-ever hybrid motoryacht and uses a specialized propulsion system to ensure reduced emissions for sustainable cruising. Since her launch in 2015, she has won a host of awards; it’s easy to see why. She has a total of four decks, connected by an elevator and a rosewood spiral staircase. The owner’s suite is on the private upper deck, and the VIP cabin (complete with its own waterside balcony) and additional four en-suite double cabins are found on the main deck.

The main deck also has a 30-ft swimming pool, expansive sundeck with DJ booth and barbecue. There is an onboard spa with hammam (a masseuse and beautician are part of the crew) and a well-equipped gym with views of the ocean — but if you’re more into shooting hoops, then head to her basketball court. Savannah’s piece de resistance is the underwater lounge. It’s the first underwater viewing lounge of its kind, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open up the world beneath the surface for your viewing pleasure. It can also be turned into a cinema room with stadium-style seating.

As one of the world’s natural seven wonders, the Great Barrier Reef is simply remarkable. A large part of the 1,430-mile stretch of coral reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to limit the impact of tourism, so Savannah’s eco-friendly credentials make her a considered choice to charter here. The reef is home to some 900 islands, and while you could certainly head on a longer jaunt to try and see as many of them as possible, this seven-day itinerary from Northrop & Johnson explores the wonders in and around Lizard Island.

On day one, you’ll cruise toward Mackay Cay — a small sand island that only rises about a foot above high tide. Snorkel in the surrounding crystal-clear waters and look out for endangered plants and animals. Sail on to Rachel Carson Reef for a spot of fishing, then enjoy a few sunset cocktails on Savannah’s main deck before dinner. Then head on to Anderson Reef, where you can snorkel or dive world-famous sites, including Steve’s Bommie and Temple of Doom. Or, if you’d prefer, head to Savannah’s Nemo Lounge for stunning vistas of the underwater world around you.

In the following days you will sail on to visit Ribbon Reef 7, Ribbon Reef 9, Cod Hole and Dynamite Pass. On day five, you’ll arrive at Lizard Island — follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook, and hike up to the highest point on the island (known as Cook’s Look) to take in the astonishing views; snorkel amongst the giant clams at Clam Gardens, or kayak through the clear waters.

Balearic Islands

Built by industry powerhouse, Feadship, Joy has the first exterior designed by the lauded design studio Bannenberg & Rowell. She has five decks connected by a spiral staircase that coils around a glass elevator; the master suite can be found on the owner’s deck. It was designed to resemble an onboard penthouse and has 270-degree views from floor-to-ceiling windows, a private office and lounge, and his ‘n’ hers en-suite bathrooms, plus it overlooks a winter garden. There are two double en-suite cabins on the owner’s deck positioned close to the master suite (handy if you’re traveling with family). The other cabins are on the main and lower decks. Joy has myriad entertainment spaces including a lower deck beach club that can be transformed into a nightclub or private cinema thanks to the video wall; an Irish whiskey bar in the main saloon; sundeck with barbecue and pool; and a large games deck forward. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, the wellness facilities are outstanding: There is a very well-equipped gym that overlooks the ocean, and a sumptuous spa treatment room.

The main islands in the Balearics are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, and each has its own distinct character. This seven-day itinerary from Burgess begins in Club de Mar, Mallorca’s chic marina, before gliding onto Playa Es Trenc, a six-mile stretch of beach with shallow, aquamarine waters and powdery sand. Spend the day strolling along the white sands and wading through the clear waters before enjoying an alfresco dinner onboard. Head chef Lee Easdon grew up in a small fishing village in Cornwall, England so, unsurprisingly, he has a passion for seafood. Dine on seared sea bass with fennel puree, dauphine potato and fennel.

The next day, you’ll sail on to Formentera. The ‘chill’ island (known as Ibiza’s calmer sister) is perfect for lazy days in the sunshine: Relax on Joy’s sundeck or grab a SeaBob — this is a prime spot for underwater viewing. If you’re up for something more energetic, have a one-on-one training session in the gym. Next, travel on to Ibiza Town. Go ashore in the Wajer 38 tender, then meander through cobbled streets in the fortified Unesco-listed Old Town, or hit one of the famous clubs. Start the next day with a 90-minute Ayurvedic massage in Joy’s spa suite while you sail north on to Cala Xarraca — an off-the-beaten-track beach, surrounded by pine forests and with natural mud baths. Cruise to Puerto Soller, a small and charming seaside town, and Puerto Andratx, a glamorous fishing village on the western tip of Mallorca.

Sundeck 550 yacht test: Bespoke Italian trawler looks set to turn heads across Europe

Sundeck is an unfamiliar name on these shores, but the high-quality Sundeck 550’s bespoke construction may turn the heads of those looking for a trawler

The wind is blowing old boots across the Bay of Cannes. The flags surrounding the marina are snapping impatiently at their masts and the boats are bobbing and weaving on their moorings in tune to the howling wind, which is gusting to over 30 knots.

Given the weather conditions, I am doubtful that my sea trial of the new Sundeck 550 I am here for will even go ahead, but the team from the shipyard are determined to show me what the boat can do in exactly the sort the sort of conditions this craft was built for.

Sundeck won’t be a brand that many are overly familiar with but at its base in Lavagna, Italy, the yard is building a small number of high-quality, bespoke trawler-style yachts to tackle the Azimut Magellanos and Absolute Navettas of this world.

They build around 20 boats per year, and each Sundeck 550 takes four months to build. They’re ambitious, too – a glance at the website reveals plans for a Fjord -like 43 Open and a 38m flagship superyacht with a range of trawlers sandwiched in between.

First impressions of the Sundeck 550 are that it’s rather utilitarian. The entirely white superstructure doesn’t help, and nor do the blocky hull windows and upright front screens. What it lacks in charm compared to the Magellano and Sirena 56 it recoups in purpose, however.

The long flybridge deck is dazzling white, almost unbearably so in the bright morning sun. The deck, mouldings, upholstery, canopy and even the radar tower are bright white, so a splash of teak or an alternative cushion colour would be welcome to break up the white monopoly.

The layout works well though, with a sizeable central dinette forward of the wet bar, which is mounted out back to keep cooking smells away from guests. Both helms are typically Italian in that the helm seat is half a mile away from the dash, so it’s a case of letting autopilot take the strain or standing to drive.

The solidity of the exterior is carried through to the interior where you are met with chunky cabinetry and plush square-edged sofas. There is a potent whiff of quality, but it does look plain without the touches of an owner.

The aft galley is almost completely hidden by substantial folding tops that lift to reveal a generous amount of workspace, the sink and an induction hob. There are four deep chest chillers opposite.

The VIP ensuite cabin forward enjoys plentiful storage and natural light

Below decks, there are three generous ensuite cabins including a full-beam master cabin amidships, a double VIP forward and twin guest on the starboard side. Internal volume is key to the Sundeck 550’s charms and you feel it most in the accommodation where the cabins enjoy plentiful floorspace and masses of headroom.

The inclusion of three bathrooms is a plus point for a boat of this size and each one is roomy and fitted out to a high standard. It’s a no-nonsense type of boat, though there’s something of the battleship about the way you peer through three square panes of glass and sit behind an upright helm station that, due to the distance between the helm seat and dashboard, encourages you to stand at the wheel and pay attention.

Our test boat had the largest pair of FPT 570hp diesels – a leftfield option, but they are lovely motors. Part of Sundeck’s charm is that the boats are bespoke, so if you want different engines, the yard will, within reason, accommodate.

The engineroom is lit like a surgical theatre, both the layout and installation making potential leaks or other issues very easy to spot and rectify.

In the spiky chop of the bay of Cannes, the FPTs provided ample shove and soon had the Sundeck 550 punching confidently through the worsening conditions. The vacuum-infused hull handled the challenging sea state with nonchalant ease without a hint of a slam or squeak.

That solid vibe when you step on board is transferred to the way this boat performs at sea and we have no trouble opening the taps fully and charging along at the top speed of 26 knots.

There are a few too many sharp corners but the joinery is excellent

Throttle back to around 17 knots and you’ll see a return of 120lph, or bring it down to a displacement speed of 9 knots for a fuel burn of 20lph and a range of 900nm.

It’s a boat that feels comfortable trickling along at single-figure speeds, the optional Seakeeper 5 taking the edge off the swell, or cruising along in the early twenties, knocking waves out of its path.

This boat, for whatever reason, didn’t have the electro-hydraulic steering so it was a case of planning ahead and hauling the wheel from lock to lock. Most would spec the power steering, though.

There’s no shortage of competition for the Sundeck 550 but its bespoke nature and quality of build give it a certain edge. Whether it’s enough of an edge to persuade people away from better-known brands is another matter entirely, but with ambitious expansion plans, Sundeck certainly isn’t resting on its laurels.

Deep seas and tight spaces impede search for 6 missing after yacht sinks off sicily, italy boaters missing, italy-boaters-missing.

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Police divers resumed searching Tuesday for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in deep seas off Sicily, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who had defended him at trial.

The luxury sailboat, off Porticello near Palermo, was about 50 meters (164 feet) underwater — far deeper than most recreational divers are certified for and a depth that requires special precautions. Recovery crews could only stay for 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

Divers tag-teamed the shifts and were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search. They hadn't been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that shifted during the violent storm that struck the vessel early Monday. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven’t verified their presence there through portholes.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly .

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the majestic, illuminated 75-meter (246-foot) mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappearing over the course of a minute.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body was recovered, identified by officials as the Antiguan-born on-board chef. The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

The survivors were rescued by a nearby sailboat after getting into a lifeboat.

Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived the sinking. Hannah Lynch, the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for.

Also unaccounted for are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s lawyers, and his wife, Neda; and Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch’s defense, and his wife.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors, said he was close enough to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

“A moment later, she was gone,” he said.

“It’s a great, great tragedy,” said Britain’s ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn, who visited Porticello on Tuesday. Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship and British citizens were among the missing.

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany's coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space divers have to maneuver.

“That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight," he said.

The outing was intended at least in part as a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal and a “looking forward to what was coming next,” said Reid Weingarten, a Washington attorney and a member of Lynch’s defense team who was not on the yacht.

“A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then, of course, this happened,” Weingarten said.

Weingarten worked with Morvillo and said he “was like a brother.”

Aki Hussain, CEO of international insurer Hiscox Group, where Bloomer was chairman, said the company was “deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.”

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” he added.

Among the survivors, the Emslie family was released from Palermo's pediatric hospital on Tuesday. Charlotte Golunski had reported that she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but then managed to hold her up over the waves until they were both pulled to safety, doctors said.

The father, identified by ANSA news agency as James Emslie, also survived.

“They don't talk much, primarily because they consider themselves survivors and they don't understand why they survived given what they went through,” said Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at Di Cristina pediatric hospital.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Cipolla said the parents had been in touch with other survivors, who are being housed at a nearby hotel and were waiting for other family members to arrive in Sicily.

The Bayesian, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, is registered to Revtom Ltd., according to online maritime database Equasis. Bacares, Lynch's wife, is listed as Revtom's sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

According to online charter companies, it had been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and was notable for its massive 75-meter-tall (246-foot-tall) aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The coast guard said to date there was no trace of fuel leaks from the wreckage.

In an unrelated event, Lynch's co-defendant in the Autonomy trial who was also cleared, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, said Chamberlain's lawyer, Gary Lincenberg.

Divers recover 5 bodies from wrecked superyacht off Sicily; 1 still missing

PORTICELLO, Sicily — (AP) — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers on-scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life over three days of searching.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. The body of the ship's chef, Recaldo Thomas of Antigua, was recovered Monday.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but visited his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to rapidly sink, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the ship maker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.

Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.

But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the sailboat that rescued survivors said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

The underwater search continued in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in pairs could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were on the wreck Wednesday.

In all, some 27 divers took rotations, including four who helped with recovery after the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement.

The limited dive time was aimed in part at avoiding decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Divers were also working with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”
