folksong 25 yacht

The Folksong 25 is a GRP cruiser based on the Folkboat. Its Scandinavian origins are pretty obvious and its a tried-and-tested formula copied in other marques such as the Contessa. Folksongs came as a complete boat or as a bare hull for home finishing and were produced, mostly, in the late 70s and early 80s. The Folksong is sleeker and faster than its forebears and it's a lovely, stiff and sea-kindly classic boat - an absolute pleasure to sail. But I have three boats and this doesn't get sailed at all at the moment (more of that later).

I bought it in 2011 and we sailed it for a couple of seasons on the east coast of Scotland. The previous owner had replaced the original two-tier guardwires with a single tier which disappeared altogether at the bow and my wife became increasingly worried by going forward in a blow. The boat's equipment was getting a bit past its best in any case so I decided to take it out of the water and strip it completely. All of the winches, blocks, cleats, eyes, sheets, control lines - everything except the hull, mast, boom, sails and rudder! - were replaced or refurbished.

The boat had been a less-than-professional home completion version and so even my limited carpentry skills were an improvement! The interior quality was improved by buying the inside of an old Folkboat and using its woodwork to redesign the interior. Though I'm keen on a wood finish, my domestic line-manager wanted it bright inside - thus the yellow paintwork - and then she decided offshore wasn't her thing at all. I finished the boat by converting it to big-loch-sailing.And it hasn't been in the water since because the water level has been too low for its 4' draft! There's no point in it sitting there for another couple of years so it's up for sale.It comes with everything required though I should point out that the pictures show the boat as it lies at the moment - everything removable has been taken out and stored in my shed - hatch covers, cabin sole, table, cushions, Origo cooker, sink, chart table, nav station seat, companionway steps, batteries, solar panel and bracket, boom, whisker pole, sails (inc.

Spinny), tiller, anchor, chain, warp, sheets, guardwires and stanchions, winter full length haulage quality cover - too much stuff for me to remember but they all come with the boat as does, obviously, the trailer, jockey wheel and the cockpit cover. The boat had its engine removed some time in the past (I'm not a great fan of iron sails) but the mounting is still there - adapted as a battery compartment - as is the outboard bracket. The original chainplates (mild steel of all things!) have all been replaced in stainless and the backstay split - rather than the off-set of the original - and renewed, as have the forestay and all the shrouds. The VHF and GPS aerials remain, together with their (renewed) wiring, and a new set of LED nav lights was my way of hanging on to the possibility it would be going off-shore again. The trailer is substantial, with Land Rover wheels and tyres, but the brake connections have been a casualty of the enforced idleness. New rods and adjusters are included in the sale but it's pretty difficult to fit these with the boat still on the trailer! The boat was towed (brakeless) to its present location by a contact with a brakedown truck (the trailer was a couple of inches too wide to go on the back!).

Since it's been sitting roasting in the sun the forward hatch seal has developed a leak and the non-slip deck paint has peeled in some areas (repainted darker blue in the photos). The boat's location (and the mooring it isn't on!) is paid up to mid-October.Enquiries welcome (I have lots of photos), inspection advised.VERY IMPORTANT - please note re payment: the price set is an end-of-season offer to move the boat on before the winter. That price includes everything required to sail the boat satisfactorily - sails, boom, sheets, blocks, spinnaker pole, two-teir guardwires and stanchions, tiller, mooring ropes, anchor and warp, hatches, fenders and, of course, the trailer and jockey wheel. What it won't include is the outboard, solar panel, cooker, battery and off-boat electronics. I'm happy to have a straightforward discussion about that so that a prospective buyer knows exactly what they're getting before they pay and these items will be available for separate purchase.

After inspection I would expect a deposit to secure the boat and then full payment by bank transfer before the boat becomes the buyer's property. NOTE: I will not accept any other forms of payment other than a bank transfer. It really is essential that a prospective buyer views the boat beforehand as she is sold as she lies plus stored additional equipment. I've had too many time-wasters on this to consider any other arrangement. A full bill of sale will be drawn up, with detailed inventory of everything included in the sale.

I'm happy to assist with moving the boat but once sold (i.e. Before it moves) it's the responsibility of the buyer. The boat is fully insured at the moment but that insurance will lapse immediately on sale and subsequent insurance will be the responsibility of the buyer - as will the mooring/storage fees after mid-October. Please ask if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer

Broker's Comments

The Folksong 25 is a classic long keel cruiser based on the Folkboat and built in GRP. Ideal for single handed sailing with in mast furling, she is an easy to handle yacht that will hold a course with little if any weather helm. The yacht has classic lines and excellent sailing qualities, with a long keel, narrow beam they tend to be well balanced. This one benefits from a modern engine and a tidy interior and looks to be a very well maintained. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Folksong 25 - Details

The Folksong was originally designed by Eric Berquist, the Folksong is very similar in hull form to the world famous Folkboat. Based on the lines of The Swedish Folkboat,The Folksong embodies the three principle virtues of the true classic boat, ie Looks, Performance and economy. She was Launched in 1984 from mouldings made in 1981 and completed by the present owner. This yacht is a good example of the Folksong type and is in excellent order. The hull was gelshielded in 2008. The owner has looked after this boat and kept it upgraded to a high standard. Fast and safe with a 6 knot maximum cruising speed. Breitling Replica Watches

Broker's Comments

Very much a work in progress, this little Folksong 25 for sale with Boatshed Port Solent has all the makings of fine short-handed passage maker; long keel, narrow beam, sea kindly.

She has some cosmetic “issues:” Above decks her grab rails were getting a bit worn so have been removed, she needs some new ones. Her cockpit lockers needs finishing, and her topsides could do with attention. Her furling gear has been damaged, so she could do with a new drum. Some of her gear has been removed, such as the heads and the forward bunks, so down below you have a free hand to create your own snug little haven! The best thing to do is have a good look at the pictures, and email me if you’d like some larger versions. Well worth a viewing, anyone with a little time could have her shining like a new pin over one winter, and sail into the sunset next season. These boat details are subject to contract. I have just purchased a FolkSong 25 with which came a brochure from Eric Berquist which shows the layout of the bulkheads and all sail dimensions. This may interest some other owners, if so just ask and I'll pass on a JPEG of the brochure.

Hi, I would really appreciate a copy of that. [email protected] I am just viewing one at the weekend. Cheers Dean

Did you see there was a fair bit on the Folksong a few pages back, inc' mention of a possible class association...

Folksong 25 Thanks for your good wishes, they are fully reciprocated. Zagato looks a nice boat, how are you transporting her? Calanda is moored at Brighton but am looking for a berth further west as travel to boat is considerably eased by this. Chichester is a possibility depending on cost. There is a lot of work to do before she is sea worthy to my standards but am hoping to make considerable progress over the next few weeks. Calanda has no inboard engine and so that space is available for other stuff such as a water tank and storage. There is zilch in the way of instrumentation and electrics but that is good in a way, I am competent to do them and don't have to put up with other's ideas of how things should work. There are few gelcoat cracks around the mast base (front) and 2 of the stanchion bases which I shall have professionally looked at, my GRP work is robust but not attractive. Best of Luck John

Sounds like a great project John, great to be able to do the work yourself in the way you specifically want her to be designed and finished. My boat is being towed. The guy was recommended by the Yacht Brokers I bought her through. He is fully insured, tacho etc and is full out with work. The main part for me was his price, half as much as most quotes! His name is Paul Clark Tel. 07855 353916. Chris

Deep water moorings, Chichester etc. John & co, In about 1987 I had a mad moment and sold my beloved Anderson, to get a Carter 30 fin keeler with ideas of living aboard at least some of the time. Marina prices naturally chose that moment to rocket, so Plan B was trying to find a deep water mooring, ideally in Chichester. I tried Hayling Yacht Co, quite good on price at the time but tidally restricted, and one thing to watch is whether one can keep and launch a tender, I found tender access 1/2 tide even if the boat was afloat. Hayling Island S.C, the moorings were so exposed & rough my normal inflatable was too small, and mooring strops had to be replaced every 3 months; nowhere to keep a dinghy ashore, and the slip covered in stones. The clincher was when the moorings launch supposed to go out, refused to pick self & elderly mother up from the mooring as he was tired... Most other moorings around Chichester seemed a lot more expensive, one thought may be Thornham, nice place but very tidally restricted, probably not ideal without an engine either. Next tried Gosport Boatyard with a deep mooring in Spider Lake, Portsmouth. OK, but definitely requires their ( good ) launch service just to get to the boat, miles away and very exposed to thieves & weather, in that order I'd think. I hope you do find a good mooring, but it may become a case of steeling oneself and paying through the nose... Do beware the tender stowage & tidal access problem though. I always regretted selling my Anderson, ( not really for mooring reasons though the fin was expensive & hassle to moor ) she'd been left unused, and by sheer luck & a bit of persistence I was able to buy her back...

Thanks for the pictures. Is that a Proctor mast as it looks the same as mine except it has swept back spreaders? You have answered my question, you have lower stays going fore and aft . My mast only has one insert so I need some kind of junction piece to set this up. I think I might have to have one made. What are the drums at the front of the boat for? Cheers

I just received some Folksong info that said only 50 boats were made. Is that right?

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

folksong 25 yacht

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

By Veronica Penney

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

Israel and Hezbollah exchange heavy fire in major escalation

Israel has said it carried out a wave of pre-emptive strikes across southern Lebanon to thwart a large-scale rocket and drone attack by Hezbollah.

Jets destroyed thousands of the Iran-backed armed group’s rocket launchers on Sunday morning, Israel's military said. Hezbollah and its Amal allies said three fighters had been killed.

Hezbollah said it had still managed to fire 320 rockets and drones at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of a senior commander. According to Israel's military, one Israeli navy soldier was killed.

The US says it is working to avoid any further escalation after 10 months of hostilities that have raised fears of an all-out war.

There have been almost daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border since the day after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on 7 October.

There was no breakthrough at the latest round of US-backed Gaza peace talks in Cairo.

Before leaving, Hamas said it rejected new Israeli conditions and accused Israel of backtracking on promises. Israel denies changing its demands since a last round of talks in early July.

Hezbollah has said it is acting in support of the Palestinian group, which is also backed by Iran. Both Hamas and Hezbollah are proscribed as terrorist organisations by Israel, the UK and other countries.

Since October, more than 560 people have been reported killed according to Lebanon's health ministry, the vast majority of them Hezbollah fighters, while 26 civilians and 23 soldiers have been killed in Israel, authorities report.

The UN says almost 200,000 people have also been displaced on both sides of the border.

folksong 25 yacht

Israel's attack on Hezbollah at around 04:30 (01:30 GMT) on Sunday was its biggest since the full-scale war between them in 2006.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said about 100 fighter jets had “struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels” in more than 40 areas of southern Lebanon.

The strikes went ahead after "extensive preparation" for a large-scale aerial attack by Hezbollah was detected, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli aircraft had struck Beaufort Castle, the Bir Kalb area, and the outskirts of the towns of Ain Qana, Kfar Fila, Louaizeh, Bsalia, Kfar Melki, Sajd and Sarba.

A resident of the town of Zibqeen said it had “felt like the apocalypse”.

  • What is Hezbollah?

One person was killed in a drone strike on a car in Khiam, the Lebanese ministry of public health said. The Amal movement said one of its fighters from the village had been killed.

The ministry also said an Israeli attack on the village of Tiri had killed two people. Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two fighters from nearby Haris, without providing any details.

"What happened today is not the end of the story,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting.

As well as destroying short-range rockets, Mr Netanyahu said, the IDF intercepted all of the drones which Hezbollah had “launched at a strategic target in the centre of the country”.

“[Sheikh Hassan] Nasrallah in Beirut and [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei in Tehran need to know that this is an additional step in changing the situation in the north,” he warned the leaders of Hezbollah and Iran.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he had told dozens of his counterparts worldwide that Israel did “not seek a full-scale war” but would “do whatever it takes to protect our citizens”.

EVN Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu (2nd left) and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant (3rd left) are seen at the IDF's military base in Tel Aviv on 25 August 2024

Not long after the Israeli strikes, Hezbollah said it had targeted and hit 11 Israeli military facilities in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights with more than 320 Katyusha rockets.

It described the barrage as a response to the assassination of senior military commander Fuad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli strike in Beirut on 30 July.

The group said the operation had been “completed and accomplished” and it dismissed as "empty" Israel’s statements that its strikes on Sunday had thwarted a larger attack.

Video footage showed explosions in the sky as incoming rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system.

Later, the IDF announced that an Israeli Navy soldier had fallen "during combat in northern Israel", without providing further details.

Israeli media say he was killed in an incident involving a Hezbollah drone and an Iron Dome interceptor in the vicinity of a Dvora patrol boat, about 4km from the Lebanese border.

EPA People watch Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah delivering a televised speech at a coffee shop in the southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, 25 August 2024.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised address on Sunday evening that the group had targeted a military intelligence base about 110km (68 miles) into Israeli territory, which was only 1.5km (0.9 miles) away from Tel Aviv.

He said Hezbollah had been able to carry out its attack as planned, and all drones had been launched successfully, entering Israeli airspace, according to a Reuters translation.

He warned that the group would respond again if the results were deemed to be not enough.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati - whose government has little influence over Hezbollah - said he was “holding a series of contacts with Lebanon’s friends to stop the escalation”.

He called for a halt to the “Israeli aggression” and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution which ended the 2006 war.

Mr Mikati also emphasised Lebanon’s support for international efforts to broker a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas.

The White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said the hope was that the latest fighting would not lead to a regional war.

The US sees an agreement as key to de-escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border because Hezbollah has said it will only stop the hostilities once the fighting in Gaza ends.

'First one to help anybody': Missouri man drowns after rescuing 2 people in lake

He managed to rescue the two who fell overboard, but currents pulled him away from the boat..

Portrait of Julia Gomez

A Missouri man drowned after jumping in the water to save his girlfriend's 5-year-old son, according to local reports.

David Moore, 66, from St. Joseph, Missouri, died Aug. 17 after he jumped into the water when the boy, who was wearing a life vest, began to float away from the boat. Another person who was not wearing a life vest also fell into the water, KQ2 ABC and KCTV 5 reported.

Moore was also not wearing a vest when he jumped in.

The two people fell off a pontoon boat on Smithville Lake, about 30 miles north of Kansas City.

Moore was able to rescue the two people and get them back on the boat, but the current pulled him away from the boat, causing him to drown. The other two people survived.

His head went underwater three times before he disappeared. The Missouri State Highway Patrol later found Moore's body, reports KCTV 5.

David Moore 'spent a lifetime' helping others

"David lost his life helping others out and wouldn't have had it end any other way," according to a GoFundMe that was put together to help raise money for funeral costs.

The GoFundMe raised around $100, but was later deactivated by the organizer, Jeff Penland.

“He would be the first one to help anybody,” Moore's childhood friend William “Bill” Penland told KCTV.

Police and Moore's family are urging people to wear their life vests on the water.

Blue Mistress back on mooring 1

On Saturday, thanks to a small note in Sailing Today , I found a new website www.yachtbrochures.co.uk , run by Mike Davies. Included in a very long list of class names is “Folksong, Eric Berquist, 1983”. Search over.   Mike replied almost immediately to my email and the transaction was completed within a few minutes. An excellent service. Thank you.

So I have received a brochure written for the Southampton International Boat Show, Mayflower Park, 17-24 September 1983 (Stand B10).   From this I learn that the Folksong was originally sold as “a thoroughbred cruiser/racer you can afford”.

“Based on the lines of the Folkboat, the FOLKSONG embodies the three principle virtues of that classic boat – looks, performance and economy.”

The builder was Eric Bergqvist, Boatbuilder, The Square, Lymm, Cheshire.

“Specifications: LOA: 25ft 2in;   LWL: 19.8ft;   Beam: 7ft 3in;   Draft: 3ft 9in;   Ballast: 2500lbs; Hull: GRP, 7oz from deck to waterline, 11oz below; Deck: glass fibre sandwich construction with built-in non-slip surface; Cockpit: self-draining;   Sail area: 280 sq ft;   Engine: provision for an outboard well or an inboard engine.”

“The Folksong is based on the lines of the Folkboat which was designed in 1941 for a Swedish Yachting Press competition. Over 2000 Folkboats have been built embodying the traditional virtues of a long keel, conventional outboard rudder and seven eighths rig with a sailing performance to match. Although the Folkboat design was intended for wooden construction, clinker and carvel, three fibreglass versions have since been moulded. The Folksong is the only one designed specifically for home completion.

In order to retain both the classic lines and the excellent performance of the craft no attempt has been made to cater for standing headroom. If necessary though, this could be achieved with the use of a spray dodger. The accommodation is not spacious but the layout is flexible. With thoughtful planning and use of timber and fabrics you can create an interior which is warm and comfortable as well as practical.

Twenty five feet is the minimum length of yacht generally considered capable of continental cruising without bravery or heroics. The Folksong is an uncomplicated yacht – economical but with no compromise on safety.”

There’s more. If you own a Folksong and would like to discuss it, please contact me. Alternatively, I recommend Mike Davies’ website.

Hello Bill I have a Folksong Storm Petrel. I am trying to find a rigging plan. The mast is of a home construction and incorporates running back stays which are a pain. The surveyors report suggests that a conventional back stay be fitted and that jumper stays are also installed. I have spoken to a rigger and discussed the mast and the report, and he recommends fitting a new mast. The mast at the moment has straight spreaders. And i don’t know if the positioning of the shroud plates are original for the design of the boat. I would welcome any information that you could forward to me. yours sincerely martin

I jusyt bought a Folk Song, haven’t sailed for a few decades, so was wondering if you have any extra info you referred to, maybe including internal layout and equipment? Many thanks

I home completed a Folksong in 1984 and still have both the boat, Bergqvist’s advertising material (including price lists), Sail plan, internal layout drawings and even the Bowman boats spar assembly instructions.

There could of course be some reproduction costs if copies wanted, but I would be happy to photograph & email image files

I am going to buy a 1984 Folkboat in Portugal the name is “Betsy”.

I would be pleased to know if you have any news about this particular folksong. Also I would like to know if there’s any specific part that I should check carefully before buy it. Thank you very much

Hello, i have recently dragged an IF out a local farm and am in the process of trying to restore her. She has been high and dry for the last ten years. I am seeking info on plans for the standard and running rigging. Any assistance and feedback is welcomed.

Cheers, Dale.

Mike, Hve just bought a FolkSong 25 and would like a copy of your material, would be happy to pay repro costs!

The Folksong Storm Petrel referred to above belonged to me for about 8 years and I changed the rig in New Zealand from a fractional to a mast-head, but 5ft.down from the mast-head,hence the running backstays. The rig was far more stable after that and I completed the circumnavigation via South Africa with no problems.

It was a superb sea boat despite a sloppy fibre glass layup,One side of the hull was several inches lower than the other and twice I filled holes in the keel where the steel shot ballast was falling out !

Hi Bill.Three monts ago I became proud Folksong26 ouner and prepare her for round world, which means…repairs, adjusts…reinforsings.I am looking for grawings on Hasler SP windvane, which I habe seen on many Folkboats and think is the best for my boat.If you can send me drawings to make for my boat it will be gteat.Or if you send contakts on others who have drawings.I coul buy used vane if it in good order and cheap, but prefer to make it. All the best. Jordan.

There’s plenty of detail here. http://www.jesterinfo.org/haslerselfsteering.html A reasonably competent person should be ably to sort something out from this info, either that or trawl a few boat jumbles for a used navik. There are a few about.

Hello it’s me, I am also visiting this site regularly, this web page is truly nice and the viewers are in fact sharing pleasant thoughts.

You may possibly believe that it is at just “ikea”. Yet if an individual want a “kids” bed room then you could constantly visit the bed room store.

Flipping it swiftly shows the countless choices for today’s fashionable meal fixing shows. Important Step #7

Hi Folksong lovers I have a ‘project’ boat looking for someone to give tlc and get her back in the water. My husband and I had great years sailing in her on the west and east coast of scotland. Hubby took her out to re-fit..and shes been in the garden since! …Excellent hull and superstructure, mast, boom and sails. Internal bulkead fitted..and the rest is a blank canvas …If anyone interested please e-mail on [email protected] thanks Heather

Calanda is a Folksong 25, a Folkboat based design with a long keel displacing about 3 tons.  She is easy to sail with good directional stability and feels quite fast for her length.  I have spent my spare time over the last 3 months improving the paint work and generally tidying her up.  I am now 73 years and under a certain amount of understandable pressure from SWMBO to reign my sailing activities in.   As a gentle reminder boats are best surveyed by some one who has experience in this area so you know what you getting into, with the best will in the world there is always maintence work to be done.   Details follow;

Challenges confronted the crew of the Blitzen from day one in their inaugural year competing in the Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s racing season. Their halyard broke during the opening day race in May, sending the wind-catching kite propelling their boat from Long Beach Harbor to Newport Pier tumbling into the ocean.

“There was no hesitation between this team,” Blitzen’s owner Brett Scott said. “Everyone grabbed the kite and in 20 seconds it was up and flying again.”

She has been sailing since she was 5. But her first year at the head of a team has taught her a lot about managing schedules, the personalities aboard the boat and finances, she said.

“Whenever something breaks it adds up, so I’m definitely not doing this for the money,” Scott said with a laugh. “Don’t take investment advice from me. But we’ve really bonded as a team, and I think that’s our greatest achievement.”

There were plenty of smirks, side-eye and playful jabs as she and the crew rigged the Blitzen Friday in preparation of Long Point Race week. The three-day race is the last competitive event of the yacht club’s season.

The first leg starts in Newport Harbor and ends at Catalina Island. Boats then sail to the opposite end of the island and back on day two before returning to Newport Harbor on day three.

The crew of the Blitzen prepares the boat Friday ahead of the Long Point Yacht Race.

Blitzen’s Baddies, as the crew refers to themselves on Instagram, are all experienced sailors and were optimistic about finishing strong in their first season as a team. They’ve had some success this summer, including third-, second- and first-place finishes in their class during the three days of Long Beach Racing Week in June.

“We keep getting better,” Scott said.

Crew member Tyler Macdonald said the hardest part about the season has been “dealing with Adam and Spencer,” drawing laughs from Adam Bradley, Spencer Buchanan and the rest of the team aboard the Blitzen on Friday. Teammate Matt Whitfield said the real challenge of each race lies in “the hangover afterwards.” Coincidentally, he said his favorite activity while sailing is when they crack open some beer mid-journey.

There’s no shortage of banter aboard the Blitzen. And the irreverent sense of humor of her crew is half the reason Scoot chose to have them aboard.

She grew up in Reno and traveled to Newport Beach every summer as a child to sail with her family. She fell in love with both the ocean and the tavern-style warmth of the community that welcomed her into the sport.

Boat owner Brett Scott, left, and crew member Scott Buchanan.

Her father, Bart Scott, said he wasn’t surprised to see her move to Newport Beach. He’s proud to see her fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a boat and fielding a racing team. And although she has a sense of humor, she runs a tight ship and commands the respect of her crew.

“Once we all come together on what a problem is there’s not a lot of back and forth or arguing,” Scott said. “They all just recognize what we each need to do and get it done.”

After Long Point, Blitzen’s Baddies plan on participating in small casual races while preparing for next season. They hope to compete in the Transpacific Yacht Race from San Pedro to Honolulu next July.
