RYA Powerboat Handbook

The RYA Powerboat Handbook is the RYA’s top selling comprehensive guide to powerboating and is rated No1 by Amazon in the sector. It is available in English, Arabic, German, Italian and Portuguese.

RYA Powerboat Handbook

In 2003 Paul met with the RYA to discuss writing the RYA Powerboat Handbook for them. At that stage the RYA had just started its RYA Handbook series and the stable included just the RYA Navigation Handbook and the RYA Weather Handbook. Paul had already written for a number of magazines for some while and was asked to propose the structure of the book and produce a sample chapter.

In about May 2003 the RYA signed Paul up to write the book. The deadline for the text was October 2003 so the race was on, as he was travelling a lot at the time pretty much every night in a hotel and most weekends were taken up writing the text. The struggle was never what to write so much as how to write very little to say lots.

Any good book in this market is only as good as the images and this is where this handbook comes into its own. Paul sketched out all of the images for the book so that they linked directly to the text. He then met with Pete Galvin the illustrator who the RYA had decided would artwork all of the images. As anyone who has seen the book will agree Pete did an amazing job and managed to bring to life in an attractive and vibrant way such difficult to draw subjects as using springs to bring a boat alongside and helming a craft with twin engines. With this in hand the next job was the photos.

Paul produced a list of about 100 photos that were needed and agreed with the RYA that he would take about 60% of them. Many hours were spent photographing boats (mainly at our home base at Cobbs Quay) and a few on water photo shoots arranged to fill in the gaps,  manufacturers supplied some images and local chandlers and engine dealers provided kit for some of the photos.

The text was submitted on time in October and the process of reviewing and refining Pete’s work, choosing and sourcing photos continued well into 2004. The text was reviewed by a mixture of Jon Mendez, Paul Mara, Simon Jinks and Phil Williams-Ellis at the RYA for technical accuracy and to give an ‘alternate perspective’ and was artworked in about mid 2004.  It was then sent to a different artwork company to be further improved resulting in just  missing the 2004 Southampton Boat Show. All was ready for London 2005 though and in January 2005 the book launched.

Whilst we’d like to think the RYA Powerboat Handbooks are a great read then what matters more is what others think. Alex Smith is a boating journalist who has worked for most of the top boating journals, his views are: “The RYA can be quite handy sometimes, not least when it teams up with a first-class instructor in the creation of a good powerboat book. The RYA Powerboat Handbook (and the Advanced Powerboat Handbook) by Paul Glatzel are prime examples. Ably illustrated by Pete Galvin in accordance with Paul’s direction, alongside very specific (and uncommonly relevant) photos, it covers how to launch, recover and berth, plus boat handling at high and low speeds and other essentials such as navigation, weather and Rule of the Road. It’s a very digestible reference point for anyone who enjoys recreational day boating.”

RYA Powerboat Handbook

The book was well received by the boating press and received some very good write ups across a number of magazines.

Many of the images, a number of photos and some of the text have gone onto be used in the RYA’s Powerboat Level 2 course book – Start Powerboating . Start Powerboating focusses on boating handling and the RYA courses up to and including Level 2 and is a direct replacement for the RYA Powerboat Practical Course Notes. It too is available from the RYA website or Amazon.

As Paul would agree writing the book was hard work but great experience and huge fun. Would he do it again? – He has! Paul has since written the RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook which has been equally well received.

Since launch, the book has been translated into German, Italian and Portuguese. A dual English/Arabic version also launched in late 2013 as the Dubai Powerboat Handbook .

The book is regularly reprinted and at each reprint a few minor amendments are made to update images or photos. In 2009 the book was fully updated by Paul as Edition 2 and 2014 saw the launch of Edition 3.

The Original RYA Press Release reads as follows:

The new ‘RYA Powerboat Handbook’ is the latest title in the RYA’s best selling handbook series. Encompassing the expert knowledge that has made RYA training courses revered worldwide the ‘RYA Powerboat Handbook’ is essential reading for anyone who goes day-cruising in a sportsboat, day-fisher or RIBs.

The handbook provides easy to follow instruction on how to launch successfully, berth, boat handling at low and high speeds, navigation and other essentials such as weather, rules of the road, and how to recover at the day’s end.

The ‘RYA Powerboat Handbook’ is written by Powerboat Trainer, Paul Glatzel who has been passionate about the water since his teens. Paul runs a powerboat school in Poole ( www.powerboat-training-uk.co.uk ) provides a valuable source of training information via his contributions to www.powerboat-training.co.uk   an d he  also writes for Sportsboat & RIB Magazine.

With a forward by 6 times world powerboat racing champion Steve Curtis the book already has the stamp of one powerboater. Curtis said “No matter what type of powered craft that you use, RIBs, fast planing craft, dive boats, fishing boats, or a boat for waterskiing, you need training and knowledge and this is where this book comes in. It will prove to be not only a perfect learning tool but an invaluable reference.

All teach because they love boating and we work with them to constantly ‘upskill’ their qualifications and experience.

What is included in the course price? ~ when you undertake your Level 2 Course on our boats then the price you pay includes Fuel (often charged as extra at the end of courses by schools) plus of course free parking on an availability basis. We do not charge extra for VAT.

Coastal endorsement ~ As we are a coastal based school, we are able to award powerboat licences with a coastal endorsement with all our courses being held at Ocean Village Marina, Southampton SO14 3XB UK (near Shamrock Quay Marina & Ocean Quay Marina) and in the Solent area.

Why choose the Powerboat Level 2 course?

The qualification known as “Powerboat Level 2” is also often referred to as “Powerboat Handling Level 2.” Those who have obtained their Powerboat Level 2 certification are eligible to submit an application to the RYA for their Powerboat ICC ( International Certificate of Competence ), which is valid for boats up to 10 metres in length.

The RYA Power Boat Level 2 course is the gold standard of powerboat education, and its length of two days allows students ample time in both hands-on powerboat instruction and theoretical navigational study. The purpose of a powerboat level 2 course is to instil the necessary skills for operating and operating a powerboat safely. While the course content may seem comparable to that of Powerboat Level 1 at first look, the additional time allows for a far more in-depth examination of each topic, greatly increasing the student’s potential for organisational learning.

What does the course involve?

Theory time will be spent learning about different types of boats and their advantages and disadvantages, different types of engines and drives, how to use power tilt and trim tabs, how to perform safety checks, how to stay afloat, how to recognise other boaters, how to apply the collision regulations (IRPCS), how to comply with local ordinances, how to tow and be towed, how to communicate in an emergency, how to send and receive distress signals, how to prevent fires, and how to fight fires.

The first day of the training focuses on honing your skills in handling the vessel in tight quarters, while the second day teaches navigation and gives you plenty of practise time to put your newfound knowledge to use.

Our second day of training focuses on navigational basics including reading maps, calculating tides, identifying buoys, and navigating with a compass. We next put our newly acquired knowledge to use by creating a brief pilotage plan and carrying it out.

If you choose, you can apply for your ICC from the RYA once you have attained the level at which we can grant the Level 2 certificate. Once you obtain the necessary paperwork, and when you submit it along with a photo and a copy of your certificate, you will be issued a licence. Your ICC is free if you are a member of the RYA; otherwise, it costs about £50 per person. Coincidentally, joining the RYA costs nearly the same, so we normally recommend joining first to receive the ICC for free. If you join the RYA before attending your course please enter Joining Point Code No 920082657 on your application.

The Level 2 certificate can occasionally be obtained without completing the entire course. This process, called Direct Assessment, takes a half-day to one day. (Let us know if you interested in pursuing Level 2 in this manner.)

What is covered in the course?

This powerboat course teaches you the basics of handling a powerboat including safety and navigation. It essentially provides you with the skills you need to charter a powerboat on your next trip away or abroad.

When you take the PB2 course with Duck-2-Water, qualified RYA instructors will provide training on a modern and fully-equipped powerboat. Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your 2 days with him or her:

The  RYA theory  element of the Powerboat Training Level 2 course will cover the types of craft and their respective advantages and disadvantages, engines and drives, use of power tilt and trim tabs, safety checks, personal buoyancy, awareness of other water users, application of the collision regulations (IRPCS), local bylaws, towing and being towed, communication with other craft, emergency action, distress signals, fire precautions and fire fighting, and rope work.

Depending on how an individual powerboat instructor structures the course, the second day may involve a practical assessment of boat handling capability. This will involve undertaking manoeuvres learnt earlier in the course. This test can be taken on its own without undertaking the Level two course. This is known as Direct Assessment and can lead to the award of a powerboat level two certificate.

A further consideration when attending a powerboat level two course is where you take it. Coastal based schools award certificates with a coastal endorsement. This means that the student has learnt in conditions where tides and currents must be considered. Generally speaking, if you intend using your boat in coastal waters ensure that you undertake a level 2 course with a powerboat coastal school.

What are the level 2 course requirements

You do not need to have attended a Powerboat Level 1 Course in order to do this course. If you have already attended a  Powerboat Level 1  course you will find that a benefit, however, no prior boating experience or  powerboat training  is necessary or essential if you want to take the course, and it is open to anyone over the age of 12.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 ICC Course suits both those with extensive boat handling experience and those who have never stepped onto a boat before.

A further consideration when attending the RYA Powerboat Level 2 ICC Course is where you take it

We are allowed to give certificates with a coastal endorsement because our school is located on the coast, and all of our classes are hosted at Ocean Village Marina, Southampton SO14 3XB UK (near Shamrock Quay Marina & Ocean Quay Marina), as well as other locations throughout the Solent region.

This means that the student has learnt in conditions where tides and currents must be considered. Generally speaking, if you intend to use your boat in coastal waters, ensure that you undertake a course with a coastal school.

Benefits of having a level 2 RYA powerboat certification

This is a criteria that is commonly required by employers as a bare minimum. After obtaining this degree, students have the opportunity to continue their education and earn their International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is a necessity for working with boats in other countries.

Your development of a solid foundational understanding of boat management, navigation, and seamanship will be the primary focus of the training you will get. Following the completion of the course, you will be able to “bolt on” additional practical experience in order to properly solidify the knowledge that you received during the course.

The RYA PBL2 course is an excellent approach for anyone considering purchasing a boat to develop into a more “informed buyer.” When evaluating the vast array of vessels available for purchase, being surrounded by so many boats and having the opportunity to debate the benefits and drawbacks of the various models with the Instructor is really helpful.

If you own a boat and want to insure it through the Royal Yachting Association , holding the RYA powerboat 2 qualification could help you save money on your premiums.

Does RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate expire?

Will the RYA Powerboat Level 2 license expire?

No, the Powerboat level 2 license does not expire . However, if you have not handled a powerboat or RIB for some time then we also offer refresher sessions or mile building experience days. These PB2 refresher days are also a fantastic way to build on your skills should you not have access to a RIB or powerboat having completed your powerboat training.

Please email, WhatsApp or phone Duck-2-Water for more information on these PB2 refresher/Solent orientation days.

What is the duration of a Powerboat Level 2 Course?

The powerboat level 2 course (PB2 handling course) runs over 2 consecutive days or shorter as a direct assessment for experienced drivers.

You can book your 2 day course securely via the online calendar on our website.

For the powerboat level 2 direct assessment option please email, WhatsApp or phone Duck-2-Water .

What is the minimum age to attend the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course?

For the Level 2 Powerboat course the minimum age is 12 , but a commercial endorsement cannot be obtained until the age of 17. It is recommend all Powerboat drivers under the age of 16 are supervised by an adult who holds the same Powerboat qualification as a minimum.

What Comes After Powerboat Level 2?

Do i require any previous experience to take a powerboat level 2 course.

No, the RYA powerboat level 2 course also known as the PBL2 assumes no prior experience . The powerboat level 2 course is a great foundation Powerboating course and can be attended by anyone aged 12 or older.

What is the Student/Instructor ratio on a Powerboat Level 2 Course?

The maximum student to instructor ratio on a Powerboat course is 3:1 per powerboat or RIB .

What powerboats can I drive with a RYA Powerboat level 2 Certificate?

This is dependant upon the local laws of the country you are driving your powerboat or RIB in but typically you can drive any powerboat up to 10 metres in length with any horsepower engine.

How do I replace a Lost RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate?

Please contact the RYA Certification Department who will advise you the process to obtain a replacement Powerboat Level 2 Certificate.

Is the powerboat level 2 the equivalent to a UK boat license?

Yes , the powerboat level 2 is the equivalent to a UK boat license.

This licence is mandatory to ensure that you are aware of the safety procedures and can operate the vessel confidently.

After successfully completing the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course, you can then apply for an International Certificate of Competence (I.C.C.) if you plan to operate a powerboat in Europe.

International Certificate of Competence

ICCs are required in many European countries when using or chartering vessels. It shows your competence and is essential to skipper a boat in the Mediterranean or European waters. The Powerboat level 2 course suits those with extensive boat handling experience and those who have never stepped onto a boat before. Once you have successfully completed your Powerboat Level 2 course with Duck-2-Water you can apply to the RYA for your ICC at the following webpage  ICC Application

Recognition in Spain

Unlike the United Kingdom, Spain requires that skippers hold a boat licence to operate boats flying a Spanish flag. The same rule applies if you buy a boat or rent a boat. Navigating the waters with an RYA qualification in Spain varies depending on several factors including the boat’s flag state, the pilot’s nationality, residence, and the boating location. Here’s a summary:

UK Citizens or Residents : Post-BREXIT, Spain recognizes RYA qualifications for UK citizens or residents. This makes it easier for them to rent boats or sail their own in Spanish waters. UK-flagged boats require no additional steps, but boats under the Spanish flag need registration for authorization; the process is automatic and simple.

Non-UK Citizens with Non-Spanish Flagged Boats : To navigate in Spanish waters, a valid boating license from the boat’s flag country or the skipper’s country of origin or residence is necessary. RYA qualifications are generally accepted if recognized in the skipper’s home country. Carrying proof of a qualification’s acceptance, such as a letter from an insurance broker, is advisable.

Non-UK Citizens with Spanish Flagged Boats : The General Directorate of Merchant Marine allows EEA citizens and those from specific countries to skipper Spanish-flagged recreational boats with a license from their home country. In practice, most boat clubs and charter companies accept RYA qualifications.

Overall, while RYA qualifications are highly regarded, their acceptability in Spain is nuanced and varies based on specific circumstances, especially concerning the boat’s flag state and the skipper’s nationality or residency.

As a school recognised by the Spanish Maritime Authority, The Boat School can issue a Spanish Boat Licence to students who have successfully completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This option is not available for every course.

You can find out more about the Spanish Boat Licence here.

International recognition

On successful completion of an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries (Recognition) automatically qualify for an ICC issued by the RYA (see the tab “ICC”).

The ICC is widely recognised as evidence of competence in most European countries.

On successful completion of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course, UK nationals and nationals of certain other countries automatically qualify for an ICC (International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) issued by the RYA.

The UK ICC is issued by the RYA issued in conformity with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Working Party on Inland Water Transport. The certificate is available to a person who fulfils the following eligibility criteria:

1) has reached the age of 16. 2) is physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft. 3) holds the Powerboat Level 2 course completion certificate. 4) meets the nationality requirements.

Who can get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have NOT yet adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and you are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL issue you with an ICC.

Albania Andorra Armenia Azerbaijan Bosnia and Herzegovina Canada Cyprus Denmark Estonia France Georgia Greece Iceland Israel Italy Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Liechtenstein Malta Moldova Monaco Montenegro Netherlands* Poland Portugal Russian Federation San Marino Serbia Slovenia Spain Sweden Tajikistan The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Turkey Turkmenistan United States of America Uzbekistan

*The Netherlands has adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE; however, the Dutch Government has given the RYA special permission to issue the ICC.

Who can’t get an ICC from the RYA?

The following countries have adopted Resolution 40 of the UNECE. If you are a national of one of these countries and are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA WILL NOT issue you with an ICC. If you are a national of one of the countries on this list, you should be able to obtain an ICC from your own Government provided you are able to meet their requirements.

Powerboat Level 2 course is aimed at students without any previous knowledge and experience on powerboats.

The course provides two days of practical training in boat handling and safety in powerboats. The course covers everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment, securing to a buoy, anchoring, planing speed manoeuvres, collision regulations, leaving and coming alongside, and man overboard recovery drills.

The 2 days will be predominantly practical and on the water with only minimal sessions ashore .  During the shore sessions we will cover some essential navigation points and the basic portions of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

There is no exam during the course, rather it is a continuous learning and evaluative experience during these days with your instructor.

Ryan Steck's The Real Book Spy

Ryan Steck's The Real Book Spy

Full coverage of all your favorite thriller authors, and their characters, unlike anywhere else on the web , moscow x: five questions with david mccloskey.

If you love spy thrillers and you’re not reading David McCloskey’s books, you’re missing out in a big way.

Perhaps the most exciting spy novelist since Jason Matthews, McCloskey broke out in 2021 with Damascus Station , a John le Carre-like adventure that took the thriller world by storm. Now, McCloskey is back with Moscow X, another can’t-miss thriller that’s sure to stand among the year’s very best.

Just ahead of the release of Moscow X , I caught up with McCloskey, who went on the record for our Five Questions segment, and I asked him about everything from how working for the CIA has helped him as a novelist to what’s next for him that this book is finally out. Trust me, you won’t want to miss his teaser for his next project, so read the full Q&A below, then make sure to pickup your copy of Moscow X, now available wherever books are sold.

rya powerboat level 2 book

TRBS: Before we get into the new book, I want to go back to your 2021 smash hit, DAMASCUS STATION, which absolutely blew up and has been praised by writers, readers, and critics alike. Did you ever expect that level of success leading up to the book’s release? And what has it been like to watch the feedback and reader reactions the last two years?

McCloskey: No, never. Writing is a lonely team sport, at the end of the day, but your team’s pretty small and even though your friends and family will (usually) say nice things about your books, you really don’t know how the story will resonate with readers more broadly. I knew that with DAMASCUS STATION I had a story that I was proud of – a book that I would want on my own nightstand – but I think reader reaction is always going to be a mystery. I really had no clue how the novel would be received. Two years on and I’ve been absolutely blown away by the response. It’s a very surreal and energizing process to watch a story catch on, to hear from readers, and to see this thing I wrote (and often remember as an unruly Word document on my computer) out there in the wild. I’m very lucky.

TRBS: Previously, you were a CIA analyst and former consultant at McKinsey & Company. While at the CIA, you worked in field stations across the Middle East and briefed senior White House officials and Arab royalty. That’s quite the resume! When did you know you wanted to be an author, what made you finally take the plunge, and how does your background help you as a writer?

McCloskey: There was no conscious decision to become an author. It was all an organic, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other process I left CIA in 2014 and spent a few months writing, mostly to process my time working on the Syrian civil war. That experience led me to realize that I enjoyed the act of writing and that it offered some way to be a better version of myself and to see the world more clearly. But I took a consulting job shortly thereafter and more or less shelved the writing for five years, when, finally, thanks to a number of things falling into place, I was able to take six months off. Because of that earlier experience, I knew I wanted to spend the time writing, and this go-round I decided to see if I could actually write a book.

My background as a CIA analyst has been a tremendous help along the way. I’m writing spy fiction with a good dose of tradecraft and procedure and bureaucracy – for humor and authenticity, in equal measure – so having some background in how CIA and the espionage business works is definitely helpful.

TRBS: Who are some of your favorite authors, and what are some good books that you’ve read recently?

McCloskey: There are so many, but to name a few: John Le Carre, Charles McCarry, Joe Kanon, David Ignatius, Kathleen Kent, Paul Vidich, I.S. Berry, Martin Cruz Smith, Steven Pressfield, Len Deighton, Philipp Meyer, Alma Katsu, Anthony Doerr, Ian Fleming, Charles Cumming, Flynn Berry, Daniel Silva, Brad Thor, Don Bentley, Connor Sullivan, Taylor Moore, Jack Carr, Mark Greaney, Gregg Hurwitz, Simon Gervais, Alan Furst, Mick Herron. Maybe that was more than a few. And I’m sure I left so many off.

Some great books, with recency bias toward my nightstand pile:

THE SON – Philipp Meyer

THE PEACOCK AND THE SPARROW – I.S. Berry

BEIRUT STATION – Paul Vidich

A MAN AT ARMS – Steven Pressfield

COMANCHES – T.R. Fehrenbach

RICOCHET – Taylor Moore

WOLF TRAP – Connor Sullivan

TRBS: Now, getting into MOSCOW X, where did the story idea come from for this book, and without giving anything away, can you tell readers a little bit about it?

McCloskey: Moscow X sprang from a striking image that settled in my mind during a long walk: A woman on horseback rides away from a burning farmhouse. I believed Russians would be involved. I did not know how, or why, or when. I also did not know why the woman was riding, nor how the fire had started. I did not know the woman’s name. But there, in that image, I sensed the possibility of a world, and felt that I should be the one to go discover it. Moscow X is the road there.

Eventually the plot clarified around a single question: what would it look like if CIA took the gloves off in its conflict against Vladimir Putin? The answer in the novel, without giving too much away, is for the officers of Moscow X to plot a daring covert action campaign to sow chaos inside Putin’s regime. Two Agency officers under non-official cover, one a lawyer, another a horse breeder and dealer, are asked to put their lives and identities on the line. A Russian intelligence officer of singular resiliency navigates the chaos of Moscow power politics, duty to family, and her own desire for freedom amid a world of constraints. A dogged and fanatical Russian investigator tries to quash the conspiracy. An aging Putin himself makes an appearance. In the end it became a story of modern espionage, of course, but also (I hope) a story about love, betrayal, loyalty, and vengeance amid the shadow war between Washington and Moscow.

TRBS: Lastly, now that MOSCOW X is finally in bookstores, what’s next for you?

McCloskey: Up next is a modern homage to the Le Carre classic TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY. It’s a present-day mole hunt inside the upper echelons of CIA featuring the wonderfully deranged Artemis Aphrodite Procter – who was in DAMASCUS STATION and MOSCOW X – in the George Smiley role of chief mole hunter. It is a wild ride, and I’m really happy with how it’s coming out.

INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT RATIO Maxiumum 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Candidates should be competent to the standard of Level 2 (including the coastal endorsement). Whilst the course does include time on developing your boat handling we will not have time to develop basic techniques. It is recommended that attendees acquire a First Aid certificate and VHF Operators Certificate either before or after attending the course.

Aimed at experienced leisure boaters and those seeking to work commercially. The Advanced Course can be followed by the Advanced Examination. This course addresses areas such as night navigation, rough water handling and search patterns – a great course!

COURSE DURATION 2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 3 – 4 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE The course assumes you can handle a powerboat very well as it is about developing your skills rather than starting them! It also assumes you understand navigation to the level of Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper Theory (although you don’t actually need the qualification). We would always suggest that we have a chat with you about your experience before you book the course to ensure that this is the best course for you

MINIMUM AGE 17

COURSE DATES We run Advanced courses on our boats at least every two months but for groups of 2 or 3 we are always happy to schedule dates to suit your diary. If you are a commercial or government organisation, then we can organise a course to suit you.

RYA CoC exam for Power Boats

What training and preparation should I undertake before taking the exam

2 Year relevant experience, including night pilotage. Ideally around 30 days, 2 days as skipper. 800 miles and 12-night hours. If you hold and RYA advance Power Boat course completion certificate the sea time is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12-night hours. Your theory knowledge should be at Yachtmaster theory level.

This will vary from person to person, but it is easy to underestimate the level that you need to be at for the Advanced Examination. The common mistake to make is to assume that because you have taken the Advanced Powerboat Course that you are at the right level. The Advanced Powerboat Course is a good work-up to the exam and certainly most people should undertake it. However, by way of example the Advanced Course may introduce you to night navigation whereas the exam requires you to demonstrate a high degree of competence at night way above the level you would have been at if the Advanced Course was your first trip out at night. In short, the advanced course introduces techniques and methods whilst the exam tests that using those techniques and methods is second nature to you. This will only be the case if you have invested plenty of time practicing the methods and actually put them into practice on real passages.

Make sure that ahead of the exam that you ensure that your theory is fully up to scratch (you need to be at the level of RYA Yachtmaster Theory) and put time in ensuring your close quarter boat handling is very good in any conditions. You should be able to put a RIB into almost any marina berth the examiner chooses either bow or stern first in any conditions. Practicing the various pilotage techniques, you will use day and night to ensure you are totally happy with their use is of course essential.

The examiner has to judge whether to recommend that you are capable of being responsible for 12 passengers, so he/she has to be sure that you have the necessary skills.

Charter of RIB for examination cost varies according to number of examinees. One person £210, Two persons £120 per head, Three persons £80 per head plus the RYA exam fee.

Aimed at those already working as a tender driver transferring guests/passengers in sectors such as the superyacht world or in other environments where you may need to transfer guests and passengers.

COURSE DURATION

2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 2 – 3 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO

3 students to 1 Instructor. You will often find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

The entry requirement for this course is RYA Powerboat Level 2 course with the strong recommendation that attendees already possess the RYA VHF Short Range Radio Certificate and the RYA or STCW95 one day First Aid qualification.

Course Price £180 Per Person

If you are looking to use your own boat or hire a boat, which is up to 10m in length, especially when abroad, then it is almost certain you will need to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

If you already have an appropriate RYA qualification you will be able to apply for the ICC directly without the need for an assessment. Being a powerboat school we can teach you on a Rib or your powerboat.
