today. I found in a boat yard in pretty tough shape, so I brought the boat back to the shop last winter and totally refurbished/ rehabbed the boat stem to stern. I wanted to see what it would take to make an older shannon like brand new. I changed the headsail configuration to a scutter rig which I designed and has been incorporated on every Shannon since 1995. The cutter rig with the basically unusable staysail on club boom was removed and the 75% working jib is on the end of the bowsprit with the 150 Genoa set aft so that the genoa tacks easily in front of the mast in light air (see on 39's, 43's, 53's on our website).

is a very unique vessel and requires absolutely nothing to complete a trans-Atlantic voyage.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Launched in 1978, the Shannon 28 is regarded as one of the highest quality production 28 footers to come from America. The boat was conceived to serve well for family cruising right through to serious offshore sailing with liveaboard capability for two. Notable accomplishments include the two single-handed passages across the Atlantic by Rudder Magazine’s editor, Monk Farnham, at age 72 and again at age 76 which earn him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The design came from Walter Schulz, a boatbuilder described as one of the last of a wonderful breed, the complete boatbuilder – one who designs boats, invents rigs, iterates on hull shapes not only computer but also crafts the half models for testing and finally builds the real boat with his own hands. He founded Shannon Yachts in Rhode Island in 1975 with the launch of the sweet sailing Shannon 38 offshore cruiser. The Shannon 28 followed just 3 years later as the second yacht to join the stable.

Schulz’ design goals for the Shannon 28 was typical of a good cruiser – seaworthiness, comfort, and stable handling across all wind and seas condition, but he also wanted the boat to be exciting to sail. Her heavy displacement and full keel configuration fulfils the former, but interestingly, by positioning the rudder further aft and cutting away the aft portion of the keel, the Shannon 28 is also quite responsive. Rig selection also reinforces the design theme with the choice of a true cutter configuration, a favourite for offshore passage-making for its ability to maintain balance over a wide range of wind conditions. At 470 square feet of canvas, her sail area to displacement ratio is high enough to give her respectable light air performance and overall performance is good.

“I’d like to have every boat I build outlive me” – Walter Schulz

No article about Shannon boats should go without a mention of build quality – it’s exemplary. Right from the early days, Shannons have certainly earned their reputation for quality, not only in build quality but also in their seaworthy designs, even winning a nod of approval of Ferenc Mate by the inclusion of Shannon Yachts in his book The World’s Best Sailboats Vol. 2 .

The Shannon 28 was available in three interior layouts, including an offshore configuration that had an aft quarter berth. There were thoughtful details to ease maintenance like breaking her tankage down into three smaller water tanks plus a fuel tank, any of which can be removed without cutting away any part of the boat or joiner work. Choice of a outboard rudder and keel sections which allow her to stand on her bottom also simplify maintenance.

The hull was built as a one piece fiberglass molding – hand laid mat and woven roving with additional reinforcements in potential stress areas such as the bow, keel and transom intended to provide the hull with added strength in the case of grounding situations.

The decks were constructed in fiberglass and cored in balsa with well thought out deck hardware attachment points. Delamination and deck leaks are rare. The hull-to-deck joint was an internal flange bonded with adhesive bedding compound and bolted on 8-inch centers. Structural bulkheads were attached with fiberglass straps through the bulkhead and then further secured with continuous fiberglass tabbing along the entire joint. These belt and suspenders methods were typical of the entire construction.

In total around fifty-five boats were produced between 1978 – 1986, after which they continued to be available from Shannon on a semi-custom basis right up to 1999, by which time the price had risen from $55k to $175k. The Shannon 28 remains one of the classic models of the Shannon line, and continues to be sought after in the used boat market with their prices holding up very well.

Performance Predictions, Based on the Design Ratios Some of the design ratios that can help us predict the performance of the Shannon 28 are:

  • Hull Speed: 6.4 knots. This is the theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can achieve, based on its waterline length. The Shannon 28 has a waterline length of 7 meters, which gives it a hull speed of 6.4 knots. This is a decent speed for a cruising boat of this size.
  • Sail Area/Displacement: 16.1. This ratio measures the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. A higher ratio indicates better performance in light winds, while a lower ratio indicates better performance in heavy winds. The Shannon 28 has a sail area of 41.3 square meters and a displacement of 4,218 kilograms, which gives it a ratio of 16.1. This is a moderate ratio that suggests the boat can sail well in both light and heavy winds.
  • Ballast/Displacement: 38.7%. This ratio measures the stability of the boat, based on the weight of the ballast relative to the weight of the boat. A higher ratio indicates more stability and stiffness, while a lower ratio indicates less stability and more tenderness. The Shannon 28 has a ballast of 1,633 kilograms and a displacement of 4,218 kilograms, which gives it a ratio of 38.7%. This is a high ratio that indicates the boat is very stable and can resist heeling in strong winds.
  • Displacement/Length: 345. This ratio measures the heaviness of the boat, based on its weight relative to its waterline length. A higher ratio indicates a heavier and more comfortable boat, while a lower ratio indicates a lighter and more agile boat. The Shannon 28 has a displacement of 4,218 kilograms and a waterline length of 7 meters, which gives it a ratio of 344.2. This is a high ratio that indicates the boat is heavy and comfortable for cruising.
  • Comfort Ratio: 27.7. This ratio measures the comfort of the boat at sea, based on its motion characteristics. A higher ratio indicates more comfort and less motion sickness, while a lower ratio indicates less comfort and more motion sickness. The Shannon 28 has a comfort ratio of 27.7, which falls within the range of 20-30 for coastal cruisers.
  • Capsize Screening: 1.8. This ratio measures the safety of the boat in case of capsize, based on its beam and displacement. A lower ratio indicates better safety and less likelihood of capsize, while a higher ratio indicates less safety and more likelihood of capsize. The Shannon 28 has a capsize screening of 1.8, which is below the threshold of 2 for ocean passages.

Based on these ratios, we can conclude that the Shannon 28 is a well-designed boat that offers good performance, stability, comfort, and safety for cruising.

Production Period and Numbers Produced The Shannon 28 was launched in 1978 by Shannon Yachts, a company founded by Walter Shultz in Rhode Island in 1975. The Shannon 28 was the second yacht to join the Shannon line-up, after the Shannon 38 offshore cruiser. The production of the Shannon 28 lasted until 1999, with less than 100 boats built. The Shannon Yachts company is still in operation today, producing custom-built boats ranging from 36 to 53 feet.

Alternative Versions & Options The Shannon 28 was offered in two versions: the Shannon 28 Cutter and the Shannon 28 Sloop. The cutter version had a staysail on a self-tacking boom, while the sloop version had a larger genoa and no staysail. The cutter version was more popular, as it provided more versatility and balance in different wind conditions.

The Shannon 28 also had some options for the interior layout and the auxiliary power. The interior layout could be either a traditional layout with a V-berth forward, a head to port, a hanging locker to starboard, a U-shaped dinette to port, a galley to starboard, and a quarter berth aft; or a modified layout with a double berth forward, a head and a hanging locker to starboard, a straight settee to port, a U-shaped galley to starboard, and a quarter berth aft. The auxiliary power could be either a Yanmar 2GMF 15 HP diesel engine or a Westerbeke 21 HP diesel engine.

Number & Location of Sleeping Berths The Shannon 28 can accommodate up to four people for sleeping. The sleeping berths are located in the forward cabin, the main cabin, and the aft cabin. The forward cabin has either a V-berth or a double berth, depending on the interior layout. The main cabin has either a U-shaped dinette that converts to a double berth or a straight settee that can be used as a single berth, depending on the interior layout. The aft cabin has a quarter berth that can be used as a single berth.

History of the Boatbuilder Shannon Yachts is a boatbuilding company founded by Walter Shultz in Rhode Island in 1975. Shultz is described as one of the last of a wonderful breed, the complete boatbuilder – one who designs boats, invents rigs, iterates on hull shapes not only computer but also crafts the half models for testing and finally builds the real boat with his own hands. Shultz has been sailing since he was six years old and has accumulated over 100,000 miles of offshore experience. He has also been involved in various aspects of the marine industry, such as yacht brokerage, chartering, surveying, and teaching.

Shannon Yachts is known for producing high quality and seaworthy boats that are designed for offshore cruising and liveaboard capability.

The company's motto is "I'd like to have every boat I build outlive me" – Walter Shultz.

Some of the notable models produced by Shannon Yachts are:

  • Shannon 38: The first yacht launched by Shannon Yachts in 1975. A sweet sailing offshore cruiser that can accommodate up to six people. Over 100 boats built.
  • Shannon 28: The second yacht launched by Shannon Yachts in 1978. A high quality and seaworthy cruiser that can accommodate up to four people. Less than 100 boats built.
  • Shannon 43: A spacious and comfortable cruiser that can accommodate up to eight people. Launched in 1982. Over 50 boats built.
  • Shannon Pilot 43: A pilothouse version of the Shannon 43 that offers more protection and visibility. Launched in 1996. Over 20 boats built.
  • Shannon Voyager 36: A versatile and innovative cruiser that can be configured as a sloop, cutter, ketch, or schooner. Launched in 2000. Over 10 boats built.
  • Shannon 39: A modern and elegant cruiser that combines performance and comfort. Launched in 2004. Over 10 boats built.

Shannon Yachts is still in operation today, producing custom-built boats ranging from 36 to 53 feet. The company also offers restoration and refit services for existing Shannon owners.

Secondhand Values The Shannon 28 is a rare and sought-after boat on the secondhand market. The price of a used Shannon 28 depends on various factors, such as the year of production, the condition of the boat, the equipment and upgrades installed, and the location of the boat. According to YachtWorld , an online marketplace for boats, the average asking price for a used Shannon 28 in April 2023 was US$53,425, with prices ranging from US$24,900 to US$67,500. The number of listings available was four.

1983 Shannon 28' Cutter

The Shannon 28 is sought after for good reason. This little ship is just as comfortable as she is seaworthy. Upon stepping down through the companionway, you are met with a u-shaped galled to starboard and a full enclosed (very large for a boat this size) head and shower to port.

The centerline table is fitted around the keel-stepped mast, and can fold out to seat 6 or be stowed for easy passage through the cabin. Sea berths/settees line either side, with ample storage behind and beneath each.

The v-berth is fully private and is large enough for two to sleep comfortably. All cushions are in great shape, and the joinery and interior woodwork is stunning.

She's ready to sail and ready to be lived aboard!

  • Description

"Non-skid decks" may be one of the most over-rated expressions used in the fiberglass boat industry. Molding a fancy shallow pattern in a deck and using a contrasting gel coat color does not make the surface "non-skid." A wet fiberglass deck can be hazardous unless the surface is designed to prevent deck shoes from "hydroplaning" on the surface. The Shannon 28,like all Shannon's, has a special custom molded fiberglass pattern created for offshore work in heavy seas. The pattern is raised, complicated to construct, easy to maintain, and very effective." ~ Shannon Brochure

experience in a Shannon 28 or other 28-33 designs. I’ve read all the posts and websites on what people think, usually reiteration of manufacturers or magazines , the latter usually void of fully testing the vessel in all manor of a cruising is designed for.

Does anyone out there have first had experience to validate the claims?

No personal experience on the Shannon 28, but was on my short list at one point. Small for the .
I bought a Bristol Channel instead. Same length on , wider beam, longer waterline, more , bigger rig and . BCC lived up to her reputation and was fast when not hard on the . Same ballpark and similar build quality. Much more visually appealing to my eye. Some features like and have drawbacks that are readily apparent.

I have offshore experience in a 26 and the BCC. While only 2 feet bigger, the is what really counts. I got battered at times in the CD, BCC was a smooth ride. The CD did not heave to as well with a cutaway forefoot. The Shannon may do better in that regard with a bite out behind the . I could sail the BCC in that had me stopped in the CD.

. . . for a 28'er.

Back 'in the day' that was a quite common sized cruising boat (for a couple), and the Shannon was viewed as one of the better designs. It was well made and sailed well (relatively for its size).

Today it is typically viewed as on the 'too small' side of things. But if you want to go simple, it is a quite good choice.

They are getting long in the tooth these days. So you need to dig in and figure out what needs refreshing. And I would comment that Shannon's build quality varied over the years, and you want to get one built in good economy years and not in rescission years nor in time just before their several changes.

The BBC is a rather larger boat - not really a direct comparison to the Shannon (Like 55% bigger - 9klbs vs 14k lbs displacement). It is more like a 35'er just with a plumb bow which shortens the .

Boat: 1976 Sabre 28-2
in a 26 Mark II. The channels in going the wrong way were the worst conditions experienced in more than 10,000 miles of open ocean sailing. Would I recommend it especially in a C26, no because you need a cast iron stomach to handle the uncomfortable conditions. The boat survived and I had a great time.

A boat like a Shannon 28 is a go anywhere cruiser compared to the way way better built and hopefully better sailing manners. Properly equipped wouldn't have a qualm about taking a Shannon 28 anywhere in the world I wanted to go. Going to take some compromises to do long passages and but that's in your mentality not the boat's ability.

Recently delivered my new to me 28 from SF to Oceanside, CA. First day got the crap kicked out of us. Did have some problems the result of an old boat that had been not been maintained. Ducked into Monterey and spent a day and no correcting the problems and was off again. Unfortunately the had died so ended up powering all the way from Monterey to Oceanside. Would take the 28 anywhere now that I've updated the . Sailed our Westsail 32 to SoPac and back and lived on it for 3 years. You asked for up to 33' but the W32 is not a fair comparable as it's an unsanforised 40' boat.

designs and know them to be well suited for heavy conditions. But between the Shannon and the hulls Is a significantly different design.

I’ve read a lot about the Shannon, and comments mostly side on an inefficient hull/keel design. Bob Perry has even dismissed the Shannon designs, just as an example. I am aware, having worked as a rigger for some time, many boat owners, even with new and a properly setup rig can’t sail a boat efficiently. So I only use these accounts as one point of reference.

I see aspects of the Shannon design ( I infact use alberg’s design as a criteria for comparison as I have a reasonable amount of experience in his sailboats) that are typical of inefficient hulls, but I also know there is much more than I know involved. My primary concerns are the behavior of a Shannon 28 in a seaway; in larger waves; hove to, or in other words standing up to foul weather.

The build quality of the Shannon 28 based on my is top quality- this is not the question. It is fitted out for offshore use, no question.

I’m not a , but I live to sail a rig well. I respect the experience of others so i’m Interested and grateful to be reading these accounts of offshore sailing! Thank you all and I would love to see this discourse of first hand offshore experience expand.

near the end of his career as he was trying to keep Shannon afloat - the Shoalsailer, for example, was a joke. But the earlier - 28 and 38 and 50 were all terrific seaboats.

My primary concerns are the behavior of a Shannon 28 in a seaway; in larger waves; hove to, or in other words standing up to foul weather.

spade fractional sloops, nor do they easily surf downwind.

But they cross oceans at a quite nice steady pace, and will stand up to pretty much any sea conditions and keep the crew safe, and not bite you if you make a mistake. They heave-to perfectly, they run down big waves with great balance. They take getting knocked hard on the beam with just a little shake and bounce right back on the job.

They would not be my first pick if you had to do a lot of upwind (like say going north up the Chilean channels, or if your favorite activity was short tacking into tiny harbors in Scotland) but otherwise they are super well mannered and not slow.

Boat: 1983 Shannon 28
a couple seasons ago and her with my wife to the Balearics in the summers for a week or two at a time. It is an 80 nm offshore jump to Ibiza for us. Not distances, but more than enough to get a feel for the boat's characteristics in various conditions, I would say.

My previous two boats, an Alberg 30 and a Cape Dory 36 ( which I singlehanded across the Atlantic in 2001) were both Alberg designs, so an evaluation of our boat is inevitably always a comparison.

From the perspective of finish and build quality, the Shannon 28 is heads and tails above the Whitby built Alberg as well as the CD36 which itself is already a few notches better than the your average production boat. Simply put, the quality of the Shannon 28 is stunning, even at 36 years of age.

Aside from the quality issue, compared to our former Alberg 30, although about the same displacement, the Shannon feels like a bigger boat. A much more solid and secure offshore platform. Higher toerails, keel stepped , rig, longer waterline, more beam, higher topsides, deeper and higher combings. She is much stiffer than the A30, and makes considerably less leeway in a blow. Importantly, unlike the long overhangs Alberg designs, she does not hobby horse in a sloppy sea. The Shannon 28 also has a fairly tall rig, so she is happy in light winds, though she does need to be reefed early. One notable characteristic I have not seen on my previous boats is that the Shannon has an uncanny ability to steer herself for long periods of time once the are balanced.

Ours is a B cruising model (open interior). The V berth once extended is bigger than what we had on the CD36, so very comfortable for two adults. Settees are long enough for me ( I'm 6ft.) but a bit narrow even after pulling out wider. With Lee cloths though, one can get a fairly comfortable sleep off watch. size and functionality is excellent. location at the foot of the companion way is well thought out and the space is adequate, but just so.

All in all, I'm much impressed with the Shannon 28, though to be fair after only two seasons, I'm still the boat. From my previous offshore sailing experience, I would have no issues with taking this boat across the Atlantic, though she would need some additional such as a , etc.

Hope this helps.

Boat: Shannon 28
but feels big and safe compared to any others I’ve been on in the 30-foot range. The interior, however, is quite cramped. It’s due to A) the dark vibe of all the woodwork. (I love that though.) And B) the numerous areas that are built into the hull, and handholds that are everywhere. It’s a lot built into a very small area. But it’s ingenious.

The layout up on allows for secure footing and hand holds, big toe rail, excellent cockpit drainage design and high combing, etc. It’s only 9300 lbs, but she feels heavy. The deck feels much more like a 30 foot boat. The interior feels like a 25 footer. All you want to do down below is sleep, cook, etc. I removed the sorry excuse for a fold out table because it was more in the way than anything. All my time is spent in the cockpit. The two settee berths are very comfortable, though and actually slight "out" (amidships) about 6 additional inches, like a pullout couch so the average sized person doesn't have one arm falling off the mattress constantly. The V berth is ample, but of course not fit for sleeping if offshore.

In light airs she actually moves well – I can slide along in 5-7 knots wind and claim "a great day sailing" . Around 10 knots, it’s just great to sail. At 15-19, start paying attention because she WILL show her tenderness and heel too much, if your sails aren’t trimmed, depending on your point of sail. (By “too much” I mean getting into inefficient returns of wind vs fwd - not too scary, unless you ask my girlfriend anyway though. She’s a pig to back up. I do a circle if I miss a turn in the marina due to traffic – she just can’t maneuver like boats with fin keels.

Overall, a very solid boat. It is my "forever boat". Every time I get on another boat I realize how much more I love my own, for quantitative reasons. Not just blind lust. If you're looking at one, snag it. Obviously, they are getting old. Bought mine and immediately completely overhauled the stern tube (it was , and corroded – now it’s and perfect!) Had to rebed some stuff, new mounts, revamped the , pulled the , etc, etc. Typical old boat stuff. But if she’s on your short list, you know what you’re getting in to I’m sure. Drop me a line if you want more specifics.

A man had to be treated by paramedics after a motorboat crashed into a breakwater. An air ambulance landed at Mount Batten this afternoon after the boat dramatically ran aground just metres from where a woman was sitting.

Eyewitnesses say the vessel left Sutton Harbour this afternoon (Tuesday, September 17), appearing to intend to sail around Mount Batten. However, it was later photographed aground at the breakwater.

Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI were called to the incident at around 2.50pm today. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told PlymouthLive that a vessel was reported to have run aground at the Mount Batten breakwater.

An eyewitness said he and his wife saw the motorboat heading out of Sutton Harbour through the turntable bridge. "From there it was heading towards Mount Batten breakwater, presumably to go past it, to head on out," they said.

"After a couple of minutes a pilot boat tied up and two guys got off, jumped into a twin engine boat and with great haste, went chasing off in the same direction. By the time we walked up to Dutton's Cafe, the motor boat was already on the rocks."

Another witness said: "My daughter has just witnessed a boat crash into the rocks four meters away from her."

South Western Ambulance Service vehicles were seen in the area and video footage also shows a helicopter from Devon Air Ambulance landing. One man was taken into the care of paramedics, but it is unclear if he was then taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard coordinated the response to a motor vessel reported to have gone aground at the Mount Batten breakwater, Plymouth, at about 2.50pm on 17 September.

"The vessel was moved to a pontoon where the man was taken into the care of the South Western Ambulance Service. Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Plymouth attended."
