Dufour 48 sailboat

An innovative luxury yacht of almost 15 metres.

The Dufour 48 yacht offers an unparalleled experience and promotes living in the great outdoors, a return to the ocean. This luxury 15- meter sailing yacht reveals an aft cockpit that guarantees instinctive, safe and convivial sailing. A new feature is a second cockpit with sunbathing areas forward on the yacht, offering unrivalled comfort both under way and at anchor.

With the Dufour 48, the shipyard is continuing to innovate, again and again. The DNA of the Dufour brand has been preserved to offer owners the performance and comfort they deserve. The teams’ extensive know-how and experience promise a robust, efficient yacht for all types of boating.

A LUXURY YACHT DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR LIVING

The Dufour 48 luxury yacht has been designed for enjoying the fresh air on the ocean. Life on board is comfortable at all times, both below deck and outside.

The aft cockpit has been redesigned to offer significant space. When under way, moving around on board is simple and natural. Two tables provide a splendid spot for enjoying meals or simply relaxing at anchor.

What would a Dufour be without its aft platform? Once again equipped with a plancha grill, it comes with a host of new features. It’s a genuine outdoor galley, equipped with all the essentials.

To complete the layout, the Dufour 48 has a second cockpit, this time, forward. Here, a sun lounger can be installed for unforgettable moments of relaxation at anchor or under way.

EVER MORE MODERN LINES

The design of the Dufour 48 sailboat has been redrawn by naval architect Umberto Felci of Felci Yachts Design. The lines are fluid and the boat offers a great amount of volume. The usual coachroof glazing has been redesigned as longitudinal windows with integrated opening hatches.

EXCEPTIONAL LIGHT

Already a focal point aboard previous models of the Dufour 48, light is once again a major feature. The coachroof’s full-length windows provide constant light, which is diffused throughout the interior saloon and galley.

When the mattresses from the sun loungers are removed from the forward cockpit, large windows are revealed, letting in even more light to the yacht’s interior.

OPTIMISED INTERIORS

Depending on which version of the Dufour 48 sailboat you choose, all the furniture has been optimised to ensure unrivalled comfort. If you choose the forward or lateral galley, there is always plenty of storage space provided.

Dedicated interior saloon tables have been created by interior designer Ardizio Design. These are optimised for the three- and four-cabin versions.

In the cabins, blackout blinds are integrated directly into the ceiling. So, despite the brightness of the boat, you won’t be disturbed by the very first rays of daybreak.

Sailing the Faroes: ‘It’s a challenging but very rewarding cruising area, with endless hills and fantastic views’

  • September 10, 2024

Albert and Claudia spent five weeks slowly cruising through the 18 islands of the volcanic Faroe archipelago last summer, getting to know the local people and navigating the strong tides

yacht s.a

Our way of life on board is best described as “Vi tar det lugnt,” Swedish for “we take it easy.” We travel without a specific plan or target; the voyage is important, not necessarily the destination. After a crossing, we slow down, explore the environment, and enjoy the local atmosphere and culture. We anchor often and prefer to moor at small fishing quays, which is a great way to meet local people and get a feel for the island’s way of life. Traveling without a schedule allows us to adjust our plans and enjoy the moment, especially in these waters.

The Faroe Islands are situated about 150-200 miles from either the Hebrides, Orkney, or Shetland. The Faroes are a self-governing nation under the external sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and not a member of the European Union. The Faroese language derives from old Norse, but English is widely spoken, as well as a mix of Scandinavian languages. It is not a common cruising destination, and yachts coming to the Faroes are predominantly on their way to Iceland.

There is a strong cultural identity on the islands, anchored in traditional values and the acceptance that some forces are stronger than men. Just take it as it comes and deal with it. The Faroese people call this Kanska (maybe) – it applies to life on remote islands and sailing. Plans are always followed by “maybe,” depending on wind, tide, weather, sea-state, and the mood of the day. With a population of seafarers, sea transport is the lifeblood of island communities. Arriving with our own yacht made us feel extra welcome, and we met many very friendly and helpful people.

We arrived in Nólsoy (opposite Tórshavn) after a comfortable 36-hour crossing from Orkney. A high-pressure area extended all the way from Iceland over the Faroe Islands and Shetland towards Norway. There were stable and settled conditions, lots of sunshine, but little wind. That wasn’t the weather the yachts planning to cross to Iceland were waiting for, but for us, it opened many possibilities. We spent almost five weeks cruising the islands before sailing to Shetland.

Sailing from Scotland to Ireland: ‘The mountains were swathed in a blanket of cloud and the waves became enormous’

The magic and mystery of the western isles of Scotland capture my imagination and draw me back every summer. This…

Equinox in the sea.

Cruising the Scillies and Gurnsey: ‘All was well in our little world’

Now in his 82nd year, my father Ewen reluctantly ended a nearly 50-year relationship with his much-loved and well-used succession…

It’s a challenging but very rewarding cruising area. The landscape is largely unspoiled and easily accessible, with endless hills, lots of sheep, and fantastic views. There is a strong cultural identity, and we found the Faroese people to be very friendly, helpful, and extremely resourceful. Seafood is by far the largest industry, accounting for more than 90% of exports. Aquaculture and fish processing is a growing industry, resulting in an increasing demand for labor (often from abroad) and associated pressure on the local housing market. The shift from fishing to aquaculture and fish processing has a stabilizing effect on the economy.

Northern Islands

There are no harbors on the exposed outside of the Northern Islands (Norðoyggjar), only a few bays. The calm weather allowed us to sail very close to the imposing cliffs and anchor in remote bays. We used aerial photos from Google Maps to find a nice sandy bottom to drop anchor. The islands of Virðoy, Borðoy, and Kunoy are linked together by road causeways. The steep cliffs on the north side rise more than 700m straight from the ocean. Klaksvik, the second-largest town in the Faroes, is located on the inside of Borðoy in a very sheltered location.

yacht s.a

Friendly Tórshavn has guest pontoons right in the centre of town. Photo: Albert de Nijs and Claudia Koppeno

The two larger islands, Streymoy and Eysturoy, lie close together, separated by a narrow and shallow (2.6m) sound. A bridge crosses the sound at Norðskáli with limited height (17m) for yachts. The new Eysturoy undersea tunnel connects these two islands close to Tórshavn. New tunnels are being built continuously throughout the islands, making commuting easier and less weather dependent. The aim is to keep these small communities alive.

Fuglafjørður lies on the east side of Eysturoy, a great harbor for shopping and water, with a pontoon right in front of the FK supermarket. Just north of Eysturoy are two legendary rocks: Risin and Kellingin. According to legend, an Icelandic giant and his wife tried to tow the Faroes to Iceland. It took longer than expected, and as they were about to go home to Iceland, the sun rose and turned them into stone.

Tjørnuvik is located on Streymoy’s north coast in a beautiful bay, famous for surfing. We anchored close offshore, with only a bit of wind and swell coming in. Early in the morning, we saw the sunrise over Risin and Kellingin, and later we hiked up the mountains behind Tjørnuvik for spectacular views. Eiði is a safe haven a few miles to the east if the weather becomes less favorable.

yacht s.a

The next day, we anchored off Saksun and explored the black sand beach and the tidal basin. The cliffs are impressive, and we enjoyed sailing close to them. We sailed around Mykines as the swell didn’t allow us to go ashore. Instead, we anchored at Bøur (Vágar).

Vestmanna is a settlement on Streymoy opposite Vágar in a sheltered bay with a quay and beach for anchoring. Tides run fiercely in the Vestmannasund, and we timed our departure to enjoy a smooth and fast ride. You can play the eddies, but that requires local knowledge.

Koltur and Hestur are two lovely islands just southwest of Streymoy, about two hours of sailing from Tórshavn. Koltur has no harbor, just a sandy bay close to the jetty. In settled conditions, it’s a perfect place to anchor and explore. The western side of the island is high and steep, with breathtaking views.

Hestur has a population of about 20 people, and the small harbor is served by a ferry. There are floating pontoons with electricity for fishing boats and visiting yachts. Both islands are great for hiking.

Respectful Hiking

In Scandinavia and Scotland, the ‘Allemansrätten’ and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code give everyone freedom to roam on private land and explore the beauty of the country. According to Faroese legislation, walking on the in- and outfields requires the landowners’ permission.

yacht s.a

Puffins and other birds thrive here as there are no cats or vermin. Photo: Albert de Nijs and Claudia Koppeno

Mass tourism has not yet reached these islands, but even moderate tourist pressure could disturb the untouched nature of this delicate environment. Small villages and communities with people living a more or less traditional lifestyle are easily overwhelmed by busloads of tourists looking for that perfect photo for Instagram.

As a result, a few hiking routes have implemented restrictions regarding access to the area, and landowners require a (hefty) fee if you choose to walk in that location. You can hike freely along the old paths connecting villages (bygdagøtan), which are often marked with cairns. Hitchhiking worked well for us, allowing us to follow these old village paths over the mountains back to the boat.

yacht s.a

Southern Islands

Sandoy is located halfway between Streymoy and Suðeroy, with harbors at Skopun (north), Skálavik (east), and Sandur (south). When arriving somewhere by yacht, it is often challenging to try and explore further afield, especially when there is little public transport and few cars to try hitchhiking. In Skálavik, we were thankful when a friendly local offered to show us around the whole island – it was the perfect way to learn more about island life and culture from someone who lived there.

We had some unstable weather and found shelter in Sandur harbor. A small ferry sails to Skúgvoy – a great island if you’re looking for serious hiking or want to do some birdwatching. Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun are small and steep islands. Stóra Dímun has a challenging jetty and an even more difficult trail up the mountain. We decided to skip the challenge this time.

yacht s.a

Suðeroy (South Island) measures 20 by five miles and lies approximately 30 miles south of Tórshavn. It is very accessible; a short walk out of town, and you’re immersed in nature. The west coast is steep and rugged, and the bays and harbors are all on the eastern side. From north to south, there is Hvalba, Tvøroyri, and Vágur. The ferry connecting Tórshavn and Suðeroy sails from Tvøroyri bay and takes 2 hours. We waited for good weather in Vágur before sailing to Papa Stour on Shetland, another rugged and remote island.

We really love the Faroes, the relaxed people, the wonderful nature, and its remoteness. We will definitely return to explore some more.

Guide to Key West Yacht Charters —What Are They, Where Do You Go, WhatDo You Do, and How to Book One

I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat Everybody look at me, 'Cause I'm sailing on a boat I'm on a boat, I'm on a boat Take a good hard look at the motherf*ing boat (boat, yeah) — The Lonely Island, "I'm on a Boat" Tweet

Key West Yacht

Grab your nautical-themed Pashminas, everyone; we’re going to charter a yacht in Key West! What the what? That’s right, with a high enough credit limit, you too could be ‘on a boat like Leo.’

Here’s a look at the types of yachts you can charter in Key West and what’s involved in getting one.

What Is a Yacht Charter?

Did you know you can just pick up the phone and rent a yacht? As the saying goes, all it takes is money! That’s a saying, right?

While the price of a yacht charter might look shocking at first, it’s important to remember everything you get. By staying aboard, you won’t have to worry about hotel rooms or resort costs. You will probably still eat and drink ashore, but you will have access to the boat’s galley to cook food. On a crewed yacht charter, the cook might prepare delicious food for you! You also won’t have to worry about booking snorkel trips or other excursions since you’re living an adventure every day on a yacht charter.

You can charter a yacht anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. For an overnight trip, you can explore more of the Keys by visiting other marinas or anchoring for the night in secluded coves. Every day, you can pick from a variety of activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, lobstering, sandbar hopping, or just taking relaxing sails along the island chain.

There are two types of yacht charters you’ll find in Key West: crewed and bareboat.

Crewed Charters

Crewed yacht charters typically provide a captain, but sometimes, you also get a cook. It depends on the yacht size and how long you’re going out. Crewed charters usually include food and some beverages, but policies differ depending on your company. The overall goal is always for the trip to be all-inclusive — just step off the plane and onto your own private yacht for an island getaway.

In Key West, a popular crewed charter option is to rent the yacht for a few days but only have the captain aboard for day trips. Each evening, you’ll return to the marina and use the boat like your hotel room. If you’ve ever dreamed of watching the sunset from your own yacht, this provides a glorious little taste of the yachting lifestyle.

Bareboat Charters

A bareboat charter does not come with a crew or provisions — you’re just renting a ‘bare’ boat. That means you’ll be responsible for all the things a boat owner would be, like navigating safely, planning for the tides, not running aground, avoiding bad weather, and not getting lost. It also means you’ve got to dock the boat when you get back without crashing into anything!

If you think it sounds shady to hand someone your credit card and be given the keys to a yacht in return, know that it’s not quite that easy. Charter companies require that you have some documented experience in similar-sized boats before they’ll let you take theirs out. Even if you’re a seasoned boater, the company may make you go out for a few hours with their captain to check you out in the boat. If you don’t have quite enough experience, they may be able to get you a captain to spend the first day or two of your trip getting you up to snuff.

Regardless of your experience, most companies will spend time with you going over the boat and its systems. They’ll also review your itinerary to make sure you know everything you need to. Remember, on a bareboat trip, you’ll be responsible for buying all your food and beverages. Be sure to review our five killer cocktails to make on the boat.

Training Charters

If you are new to boating but dream of the bareboat yacht charter lifestyle, you could choose to combine your vacation with some training.

There are several different training programs out there for power and sail. If you dream of sailing yachts, ASA (American Sailing Association) has a course curriculum designed to prepare you to take bareboat charters anywhere in the world. You can take these classes at any sailing school or find a school that combines the vacation with the training. Over the course of a seven-day sailing vacation, you’ll go through the courses necessary to become a bareboat captain.

Sail Away Key West and Offshore Sailing School are two such providers on the island.

Key West Boat Rentals

Key West Boat Rentals

Generally, when you’re looking for a “boat rental,” you’re looking for something for day trips — not for overnights. Boat rentals in Key West are usually center console or pontoon boats between 20 to 25 feet long, and they’re usually rented by the half or full day .

There are a ton of boat rental places on the island, and generally, you don’t need very much boating experience to rent one. You are, however, required to have taken the Florida safe boater course (or your state’s equivalent) if you were born after 1988.

Types of Boats You Can Charter in Key West

Both powerboats and sailboats are available for charter. Charter company fleets vary considerably from company to company and location to location. Some places specialize in renting the newest, sleekest charter boats, while others find good ol’ boats that can be offered at lower prices.

Monohulls vs. Catamarans as Charter Boats

Catamarans make up the overwhelming majority of the Key West charter fleet — and most other charter fleets, actually. Catamarans, both sail and power, are popular because of the amount of space and accommodations that they have. The interior of a 45-foot catamaran is about the same as a 60 or 70-foot monohull. A catamaran this size will have four separate staterooms, each with a private bathroom, meaning you could comfortably divide the cost of your charter among four couples. Plus, cats have huge windows, large patio tables, and lots of outdoor living space. They also have the added benefit of having a much shallower draft, which is great for exploring the Keys.

Catamarans are bigger and more expensive than monohulls, however. If you’re looking for a cheaper ride during your stay, you might do well to find a company that charters a monohull.

Key West Yacht Charter Destinations

Where you go on a yacht charter in Key West depends on how long you’ve booked your charter for. If you’re only going for one or two nights, you’ll have to stick close to the island to ensure you can get the boat back on time. Never fear; there are plenty of incredible sandbars and reefs for exploring.

Three or four-day charters can explore more of the Lower Florida Keys. You might check out places like Little Palm Island Resort, Looe Key, and Bahia Honda State Park.

Five or six-day trips can get you to the Middle or Upper Keys. Places like Marathon, Islamorada, and Key Largo are possible options. For the entire 100-plus-mile stretch of the Keys, there are tons of reefs, sandbars, and little towns to check out and explore.

The longer you’re on the water, the more likely weather will play a major factor in your trip. Strong winds may be unfavorable for travel, or they may limit you to one side of the islands. The seas that can be kicked up on the ocean side can make for very long and uncomfortable travel days, so every captain must pick their destinations with a close eye on the weather.

The most asked-about yacht charter destination in the Keys is probably the Dry Tortugas. Dry Tortugas National Park is about 70 miles west of Key West, far out in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a beautiful place, but there aren’t many places to stop and very little protection from the weather. Most companies recommend you have a five or six-night charter booked if you intend to call on the Dry Tortugas.

Another option for longer charters is a one-way trip from Key West to Miami or vice versa.

Florida Yacht Charters has a great list describing the various activities and destinations you can see on a Key West yacht charter.

Or, You Could Save a Few Thousand...

Truth is, you don’t need to charter a yacht to have a great time on the water in Key West. Every day, I take visitors out on Key West sandbar charters and private cruises. We see dolphins doing flips and all sorts of…stuff. So grab your swim trunks and flippie-floppies, and spend the day exploring Key West by water with Casual Monday Charters.

Plus, we’ll be back by dark, so you can spend the night on terra firma, safe from the Kraken and wonky boat toilets.

(rah)
