RYA Training Centre Scheveningen           English Spoken Sailing Courses at sea in the Netherlands ~

As an RYA Certified Training Center we offer the whole RYA spectre of sail training at sea. All RYA classes are in the English language with their respective internationally recognized certificates. There's a maximum student to instructor ratio of five, so you're allways ensured of personal guidance during all practical courses.

Yacht sailing is extremely diverse and there are opportunities for everyone to participate. Take the family cruising in warm climates, explore far flung remote places with friends or try your hand at racing. One day you may be sailing offshore surrounded by dolphins and the next you could be anchored in a secluded bay, eating freshly caught fish for lunch. There is no sport that offers a greater variety of emotions, experiences, destinations and social opportunity.

Cruising yachts have accommodation and cooking facilities, offering a degree of comfort whilst spending time afloat. How far you venture is up to you. Whether you are a first-timer wanting to be a useful crew member, or a more experienced skipper wanting to expand your skills, there is an RYA course for you. As certified training centre, Zeezeilschool Scheveningen offers the following courses:

Start Yachting : A full weekend introduction to sailing for complete beginners. Competent Crew : This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. Basic Skills : This course is to brush up your skills towards the Dayskipper course. Day Skipper : A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. Coastal Skipper : Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night. Yachtmaster : An RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper. Shorebased Courses : There is a lot of theory to be dealt with at sea. Basics of inshore navigation and safety including tidal awareness, charts, almanacs and the use of electronic navigation aids such as GPS are some of the examples. We offer the basic and advanced RYA theory courses that are essential to anyone going to sea. The online courses can be done in your own time and speed, comfortably from home, or anywhere behind your computer.

Off course you can also join one of the many non RYA courses at the Zeezeilschool, like one of our Coastal Navigation Clinics or the International Sailing Courses where you can bring into practise all you have learned and enjoy a beautiful trip to the English coast or one of the many other places we visit. During all our courses we maintain the same high standard, that can be expected from an RYA Certified Training Centre.

Below you find an overview of all our RYA Courses. More information about the different courses can be found on the respective course pages on our website. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions about sailing with us.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster® Offshore Preparation & Exam

Perfect your skippering skills and become a qualified rya/mca yachtmaster offshore.

Preparation: This preparation course is designed for those who wish to take the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Offshore examination. You will spend five days onboard the yacht with one of our fully qualified professional RYA Yachtmaster instructors prior to taking the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Offshore examination. The course gives potential Yachtmasters the opportunity to thoroughly revise both practical and theoretical subjects.

The instructor will tailor the course to your needs but our experience usually leads us to emphasize the following subjects: Passage Planning, Skippering Techniques, Man-overboard Recovery, Meteorology, Close Quarters Handling and Pilotage in Restricted Visibility. Sailing will be in local waters as it is normally found that at this level boat handling in close quarters is required rather than long crossings.

Exam: A qualified RYA Yachtmaster Examiner independent of our Training Centre will give you the chance to demonstrate that you are a competent skipper of an offshore cruising yacht. You should be prepared to answer questions on any part of the syllabus of any RYA Sail Cruising course (except Yachtmaster Ocean) and you are expected to show competence based on broad experience. Prove that you can take full responsibility for the management of the yacht, the crew and the passages. Demonstrate that you as a skipper are familiar with the handling and other characteristics of any vessel you take to sea.

Students to Instructor Ratio 5:1 maximum on all practical courses

RYA online theory, Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore

The Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory course is the perfect preparation for your practical course. It builds on the theory for Day Skipper.

But maybe You have plans to continue. Choose the fasttrack to combine both courses. The Fasttrack to RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory is for aspiring Coastal Skippers who already have the practical experience up to Day Skipper or CWO II. It takes away the duplication of Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper theory.

This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

All online theory courses are delivered by Navathome, an RYA Recognised Training Centre specialising in online training.

What is a Yachtmaster™ Offshore?

A RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. A RYA Yachtmaster™ needs a wealth of knowledge, not only to cope with plain sailing or motor cruising, but also to be able to manage demanding situations. Qualification as a RYA Yachtmaster™ is the ultimate aim of many skippers, both professional and recreational.

The RYA Yachtmaster certificate does not only display your level as a sailor, it is also one of the sailing documents recognized throughout the world. The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

What does it mean to be commercially endorsed?

If you need a Yachtmaster™ Offshore Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft, subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt in category 1 to 6 waters - that is up to 150 miles from a safe harbour.

For a commercial endorsement, in addition to your practical certificate of competence you will need:

  • Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate, acquired with a short online course
  • A completed ML5 Medical Report Form or ENG1 medical fitness form provided by a doctor
  • A RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or Offshore Personal Survival Techniques
  • A RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate

The next step: RYA Yachtmaster Ocean

For Ocean passages the following definition will apply. “Throughout the passage the candidate must have acted in a responsible capacity either in sole charge of a watch or as a skipper”. The examiner will determine whether the candidate is competent at astro navigation. Candidates must have successfully navigated a yacht at sea by astro navigation. As a minimum this should include the planning, reduction, and plotting of a sun-run-meridian altitude or sun-run-sun sight and a compass check carried out using the bearing of the sun, moon, a star or planet. Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased Course

More about 'qualifying passages' After every practical course you need to consolidate your acquired skills. Build miles and broaden your experience in a variety of areas and in different circumstances.

For Yachtmaster Offshore you need at least 5 qualifying passages as a bare minimum: 1) Over 60 nm non-stop by the shortest navigable route with no change of skipper. Passages such as recognised races which may not comply exactly with these requirements may be submitted to the RYA for approval. 2) Trainee skippers undertaking 60 mile passages are strongly advised to obtain a Coastal Skipper qualification first! 3) Supporting testimonials or a Seaman’s Discharge book

  • Skipper: The skipper is the person nominated and responsible for the planning and execution of a passage including vessel and watch management. The skipper is not necessarily the most experienced or qualified person on board, but must be the person with responsibility for the safe execution of the passage. If the skipper's role is transferred to another person at any time during a passage then neither person can claim to have skippered that passage.
  • Mate: For the purpose of qualifying passages, a mate is any person on board who has sole responsibility for managing a navigational watch during a passage. They must be actively engaged in the planning and execution of a passage.
  • Tidal: An area is deemed tidal if published stream, current or tidal range data is available, the influence of which is significant enough to require the effects to be taken into account to plan and execute a safe and efficient passage.
  • Days on board: A day on board or as skipper is a period of eight consecutive hours living on board, the majority of which the vessel should have been at sea. Periods of less than eight hours cannot be aggregated to make up eight hours. Only one eight-hour period may be counted in any 24 hour period.

Applying for a long-stay visa (MVV) for residents of the Russian Federation

If you want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, you may need a residence permit. In many cases you will also have to apply for a long-stay visa before you travel to the Netherlands. This visa is also called an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV).

In the Russian Federation the application location is linked to your place of residence. You can only apply in St. Petersburg if you live in the regions: St. Petersburg, Leningrad region, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda or the Kaliningrad region.

If you live in another region, you can apply at the Netherlands embassy in Moscow.

Do I need an MVV and/or a residence permit?

You should check whether you need an MVV and/or a residence permit . This depends on things like your nationality and the purpose of your stay.

Applying for a residence permit and an MVV

You can apply for a residence permit and an MVV in 2 ways:

  • through a host in the Netherlands (such as an employer, family member or educational institution)
  • in person at a Netherlands embassy or consulate-general

If you have a host in the Netherlands, in most cases your host will have to submit the application to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

First check whether you need to take the civic integration examination .

What is your situation?

Applying through a host in the netherlands.

Depending on the purpose of your stay, your host may have to submit the application in the Netherlands. This applies if the purpose of your stay is:

  • a work placement
  • co-habiting with or marrying someone who lives in the Netherlands
  • family reunification

In these cases your host will be an educational institution, your employer, a family member or your spouse or partner.

How does your host apply in the Netherlands?

Your host can submit the application directly to the IND. How they need to do this depends on why you need a residence permit and/or an MVV, for example for work or study. The IND website has a list of the documents your host will need to provide. It also explains how your host can apply for your residence permit . If you have any questions about this, you can contact the IND .

What do I need to do once the application is approved?

The IND will send your host a letter confirming that the application has been approved. The letter also explains how you can apply for an MVV and what documents you need.

You must apply for your MVV at the embassy or consulate-general within 3 months of receiving this letter. You have 6 months to apply if you meet both of the following conditions:

  • You are applying for an MVV for family reunification as a refugee ( nareis asiel ), and:
  • You are applying for an MVV in a country that is not your country of residence.

Take the following documents to your appointment:

  • The MVV issue form .
  • Your passport and a photocopy of the personal details page. Your passport must be valid for at least another 6 months and have at least 2 blank pages.
  • If you live in a country of which you are not a national: your residence permit (or equivalent) and a photocopy of the permit.
  • A photo that meets Dutch requirements .
  • A copy of the letter stating that your application has been approved and what your alien registration number (V number) is.
  • All other documents listed in the letter from the IND and a photocopy of each of these documents.

Your MVV will be ready for you to collect from the embassy or consulate-general within 10 working days.

Verify that the information on your visa is correct. This includes your name and the visa’s validity period.

Read more about the information on your visa

If any of the information is incorrect, contact the embassy or consulate-general where you applied for your MVV.

You must travel to the Netherlands with the MVV in your passport. The IND will let your host know when your residence permit is ready. You can then make an appointment at the IND office to collect your permit.

Applying yourself at an embassy or consulate-general

For the following purposes of stay you should submit your application for an MVV and residence permit yourself:

  • orientation year as a highly skilled migrant seeking employment
  • independent entrepreneur
  • starting entrepreneur (start-up)
