The multi-award winning 49.69m/163' sail yacht 'Zefira' was built by Fitzroy in New Zealand at their New Plymouth shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Remi Tessier and she was completed in 2010. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Dubois.

Zefira has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Zefira is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by 1 x diesel Caterpillar (C-32) 1,400hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 13 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles from her 37,380 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. Her water tanks store around 10,440 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠100 A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification society rules.

Day 1 of this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta saw the sun rise early on Wednesday morning, June 5, to greet the 21 sailing superyachts, participating in this popular race. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) as well as Boat International Media , the event, hosted at the YCCS in the popular Italian yacht charter destination – Porto Cervo , marks the start of the Mediterranean regatta season.

The diverse fleet, ranging from the 24m Starck -styled sailing yacht Virtuelle and Hoek -designed luxury yacht Drumfire to 45m regatta regulars charter yacht Salperton IV and superyacht Saudade , and 49.7m Zefira yacht , were looking forward to racing getting underway in earnest. The fleet, which is racing under the International Super Yacht Rule (ISYR), covers a broad spectrum of superyachts, from modern classics to ocean thoroughbreds, sloops to yawls, and pure cruising yachts to those with a more performance orientated design.

The 21 yachts have been divided into three equal cruising divisions – A to C – according to their ratings, and each yacht has three ratings that can be applied depending on the windspeed on the course.

After a brief postponement the breeze filled in to around eight knots, and the patience of the yacht owners and crews was rewarded as the race committee set three courses of roughly 29, 25 and 23 nautical miles for class A to C respectively. The three courses followed roughly the same track – a short beat to a laid mark, followed by a fetch to the Mortorio islands, then a long run to Monaci, a short dog leg to the south of Caprera and then home to the finish off Porto Cervo.

By the time the fleet got to the famous Monaci rocks at the end of the run, luxury yacht Virtuelle had powered into the lead on the water, rounding the rocks and dowsing her spinnaker nearly six minutes ahead of the second yacht, 49.7m superyacht Zefira. The rest of the yachts came round in tight formation, making for a spectacular sight as the faster yachts such as 30.3m Southern Wind sailing yacht Cape Arrow began to haul in the slower yachts.

The 30.8m Oyster yacht Sarafin snuck through to take line honours for Race One, closely followed by Bequia yacht , Drumfire and the sleek 45m Baltic Yachts -built superyacht Visione . Of course, it is the corrected time that counts, and the provisional results showed that in Cruising Class A the 25.4m yacht My Song – owned by Pier-Luigi Loro Piana – had won through; Virtuelle held on to take Class B on corrected, while Bequia took the win in Class C.

‘It looks like it’s going to be a light regatta,’ said Seamas Meharg, boat captain and safety officer of Bequia yacht . ‘The lighter airs and flatter water are good for us, and today’s long downwind leg was also beneficial. We got a good start, and did well at the bottom rounding at Monaci – we ducked Zefira’s stern and managed to get inside her, staying close in to the rocks.’ Meharg will be hoping that the forecast light airs continue. ‘We’re keeping an eye on Drumfire,’ he continued, ‘and there might be a little more breeze tomorrow, but if we can hold on tomorrow we might be looking good…’

For Zefira yacht, today’s second place in Class B was a strong result – not least because she beat arch-rival charter yacht Salperton by just 10 seconds on corrected time after an epic battle that played out round nearly the whole racecourse. ‘We tried hard,’ her delighted captain, Federico Biaturri, smiled on the dock . ‘We were a bit slow on one gybe and had to tack to avoid Visione near the end which allowed Salperton to sneak over the line ahead of us, but it was a great race and we’ve been getting better and better since the start of the Dubois Cup last weekend. The owners are very happy!’

The close-fought battle with Salperton is a fine demonstration of just how accurate the ISYR rating system is getting. ‘The handicaps are getting better and better all the time,’ Biaturri commented . ‘It shows in our battle with Salperton – it’s very close and it’s just going to get better and better from here.’

Racing continues tomorrow with the first start scheduled at 12:00 and scirocco winds of 10-12 knots forecast.

51m refit project Masquenada launched for Mr Loro Piana

Previously known as Aspire , the newly-refitted 51-metre expedition yacht Masquenada was launched yesterday at the Lusben shipyard in Italy. 

Belonging to sailing enthusiast and fashion mogul Pier Luigi Loro Piana, Masquenada was a project the owner had envisioned two years ago, and after purchasing Aspire with the help of Nauta Design in October 2020 , was able to become a superyacht owner again in a mere eight months. “The most important element of this entire project was time,” said Mr Loro Piana at the launch.

“Time is the most essential factor for an owner and I am enormously satisfied with the capacity of the Lusben shipyard which, together with all the collaborators, managed to complete this incredible transformation in just a few months.  Now, the project for the immediate future is to embark with my family and sail around the world.”

Speaking with BOAT, Mr Loro Piana revealed how some elements – such as the dark colour of the superstructure – were reminiscent of his previous sailing yacht , and that he intends to carry a small sailboat along with a new Iguana tender on board Masquenada. 

In order to fulfil the owner's brief, the external profile of the boat has been extended in the stern block with an added transformer to double the size of the yacht's beach area. The new and larger aft deck is able to hide an integrated powerful crane below deck in the lazarette. Another notable change to the yacht's original exterior is the additional 1.5 metres of length added to both the bridge and upper deck through the help of 3D scanning.

Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design commented: “We are particularly proud of this project that we were lucky enough to follow from the beginning, alongside the owner: From the initial briefing to the search on the market for a yacht that could satisfy his needs to the careful design of each phase of this rich and complex refit." 

"Today, we can say that completing such a complex project in such a short time was an incredible operation carried out in a masterful way by Lusben. The profile of Masquenada is now much more sleek and elegant and, in redesigning the stern block, we have managed to improve the contact with the water and the liveability of this area, now transformed into a pieds dans l’eau, " he adds.

Misa Poggi was responsible for overhauling the yacht's furnishings and decor. With the exception of relocating the galley and a modified owner's suite, the layout has remained unchanged. 

In terms of technicalities, Masquenada now features reduced vibrations and noise, three Kohler generators with soundproofing, new electric systems, air conditioning units, converters and propellers.

Having worked on the original Aspire many times, the team at Lusben were able to take on the project sooner than most. “Without presumption, I think it is difficult to find another shipyard capable of completing a refit as complex as that of Masquenada in such a short time frame,” commented Alessio Centelli, Project Manager at Lusben. 

“Also considering the difficulties related to the pandemic and the numerous restrictions in place, we were able to manage many activities, which involved various teams, external suppliers, crews and captain, always ensuring a safe and serene working climate. It took a good availability on the part of all the actors involved, an intense planning activity and a great mental agility to be able to follow the evolution, often non-linear, of the operations, but in the end, we are all proud of the result obtained.”
