MONACO YACHT SHOW 2023

Iconic Lürssen yachts at MYS 2023

Two of the most iconic lürssen yachts are primed and ready to make a splash on the market at the monaco yacht show 2023….

carinthia yacht

With the first lists coming from the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, one legend stands out. Lürssen and Fraser are set to unveil the extensively refitted 97m Carinthia VII . This refit was completed at Lürssen's Hamburg facilities, and the superyacht now features redesigned exterior decks with new lounge and living areas, a 12m/39' pool, and a fitness room.

“I am very proud that after building Carinthia VII, " says Peter Lürssen, Managing Partner of Lürssen. "We have now been able to participate in its new lease on life with an extensive refit. Carinthia VII remains a testament to the solidity of our German engineering and manufacture.”

Built in 2002, Carinthia VII was one part of a new generation of 90m+ superyachts that hit the water in the late 90s and early 2000s, largely pioneered by the German yards. The vessel's original exterior lines, from designer Tim Heywood , proved influential in the yachting industry. Heywood has shared that “several yachts were consequently designed and built that owe their DNA to Carinthia VII .”

carinthia yacht

Carinthia VII will be introduced to the charter market for the first time, represented exclusively by Fraser. Daniela de Marco, Fraser's Head of Charter Management in Europe, notes, “Bringing any yacht to the charter market for the first time is always a joy and a challenge. And one that we relish. It’s like starting with a blank sheet of paper - creating a fresh new program built on experience with the very best charter captains and crew, the latest tenders and toys and of course, creating some personalised and exciting new itineraries with clients."

Mark Duncan, Fraser's Director of Business Development & Marketing, anticipates that Carinthia VII will be a key part of post-charter conversations due to its unique features and ambience. "We suspect Carinthia VII is going to be as much a part of those after-charter dinner conversations as the unforgettable moments we know it is going to help create for those who decide to book something exceptional.”

With the combined influences of Lürssen and Fraser, Carinthia VII is set to make an impressive entrance into the charter market. It is early days in the run-up to The Monaco Yacht Show, with many more intriguing yachts set to make their way to Port Hercule. Having the chance to see the evolution of this iconic motor yacht up close is an early draw card as the industry looks ahead to the most important show of the year.

carinthia yacht

The impressive 91m Lady Lara, will also be at the show and listed on the market for the first time since its delivery by Max Bulley and Gary Wright from Y.CO and Merle Wood & Associates . The superyacht, originally delivered in 2015, has also recently completed an extensive refit earlier this year.

Lady Lara boasts an interior and exterior design skillfully executed by Reymond Langton Design, while its naval architecture was crafted by the German shipbuilder. Lady Lara offers accommodation for up to 16 guests in eight staterooms, with a dedicated crew of up to 27.

The yacht also boasts a spacious owner's deck complete with a private lounge area and a bar. To enhance the sense of privacy onboard, the owner's suite opens onto a private terrace, featuring a jacuzzi. It also includes a glass lift and offers a cinema, a wellness area, and two swimming pools, with a main deck pool that can transform into a dancefloor.

The iconic motor yacht is powered by twin MTU engines, allowing for a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Prospective buyers will be able to find Lady Lara at Berth D02, QUAI RAINIER III during the show.

Boat of the Week: This 318-Foot Gigayacht Got a New Glassed-In Gym After a Massive Makeover

The most eye-catching changes are a 36-foot glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck aft and a 968-square-foot air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck. That space used six tons of folding glass doors to create a winter garden. It’s complemented by a large cinema screen.

Superyacht Lurssen Carinthia VII

Perhaps the most significant change, though, is the yacht’s conversion from private to commercial use to allow Carinthia VII to enter the charter market. “The deal was made for the boat to come to our facility on a handshake, and then we only had a couple of days to prepare between the handshake and Carinthia VII sailing up to Hamburg,” Thomas Krischkowski, head of refit and repair at Lürssen, told Robb Report .

The list of technical upgrades completed by Lürssen includes a new waterpower treatment, a full sprinkler system, 18.6 miles of cable for a new AV/IT system, new exhaust filters and fully overhauled engines and zero speed stabilizers. The yacht also had to meet new SOLAS stability requirements to be a charter vessel.

Superyacht Carinthia VII

In 2002, when the Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten commissioned Project Faberge, as Carinthia VII was originally known, expectations ran high. The yacht paid homage to the fleet of Carinthia s owned and built by her late husband Helmut Horten, three of which were designed by Jon Bannenberg.

As one of only a handful of women to commission one of the largest yachts in the world, Horten called upon one of Bannenberg’s protégés, a young Tim Heywood, to pen the design.

Superyacht Carinthia VII

Horten had become an overnight sensation in the art world six years before commissioning the superyacht, after she spent $22 million in a single Sotheby’s auction. Renowned for her keen eye, she ensured Carinthia VII reflected a similar level of artisanal craftsmanship.

The original curved laminated teak planking, forward of the owner’s deck and bridge deck, is described by Fraser broker Antoine X. Larricq, who managed the sale, as “haute-couture detailing.”

Other original features include the thick exterior teak decks and cross-hatched parquet floors, which remain in fantastic condition, largely because Horten only used the yacht for her annual summer cruise.

The new owner, also a keen art collector, had two strict requests for the refit: to seamlessly marry the old with the new, and for the shipyard to complete the work within 300 days, so he could enjoy the winter cruising season. He enlisted Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects to oversee the design.

The studio only had two yacht projects before this. But it had completed residential projects for the owner that brought a similar look to Carinthia VII’s 8,800-square-foot interior, including redoing all eight guest cabins.

Carinthia VII superyacht

The walls are covered in fabrics by Venetian artisans, and the central staircase is decorated with handmade, laser-cut tiles in an ombré-patterned blue that transitions from deep-ocean blue on the lower deck to pale-sky blue on the bridge deck. On each floor, the artwork in the lobby matches the color of the staircase, and classic gold elements have been replaced with a more contemporary silver.

A full exterior paint job updated the hull to Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls painted in Shark Grey. Following a few minor tweaks at the shipyard, Carinthia VII will soon cross the Atlantic to make its charter debut in the Caribbean.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Posted: December 11, 2023 | Last updated: December 11, 2023

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package.

But the interior is just as radical.

Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater. It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. (The same visual trick was employed later in Oceanco’s 361-foot Jubilee.) Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho, when it delivered in 2022.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.

Iconic yachts: Carinthia VI

In any list of significant post-Second World War motor yachts Carinthia V would rank near the top. She was the first major yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg and was also a breakthrough for the builder, Lürssen .

Before Bannenberg, yacht design did not really exist as a distinct occupation. Naval architects designed what they hoped were efficient and good-looking hulls and left the shipyard to complete the interior. Bannenberg made art his starting point, and sought to design every feature of a yacht from the exterior down to the doorknobs to achieve a completely consistent result.

However, this ambition lay in the future when Carinthia V was launched in 1971. The owner was the German supermarket magnate Helmut Horten, an experienced yachtsman who was interested in speed and power rather than luxury. The 42 metre Carinthia IV , for instance, built in 1965 from laminated mahogany by Chantiers Navals de l'Esterel, was capable of 35 knots, but Horten wanted a much bigger fast yacht and went to Lürssen of Bremen, which at the time built mainly warships such as the 42 metre Jaguar Class patrol boats, capable of 40 knots. These were not planing hulls but slim, semi-displacement ones with high-powered diesel engines. It was no surprise, therefore, that the yacht Lürssen proposed was long and slim and looked rather like a fast warship. With a narrow beam, a lot of length was needed to provide enough accommodation space, and the overall length came to an impressive 71 metres.

Three V-20 turbocharged MTU diesels were placed well aft for optimal weight distribution, but when one was damaged all three were replaced with two high-powered MTUs with a top speed of just under 30 knots.

Bannenberg's contribution was to integrate the whole design so that the drama of the long, slim hull was emphasised to the maximum. The sheerline runs the full length of the hull without interruption, and bow and stern slope forward to give an impression of urgency. The front of the superstructure is drawn as a sweeping curve. All the design elements of C arinthia V are simple and strong, and distracting details are avoided. Satellite domes, for instance, are placed well aft on an arch rather than on top of the wheelhouse or on the mast. As soon as you look at C arinthia, it is obvious that one hand has been responsible for the whole vessel from overall concept down to the smallest detail.

Bannenberg was not given full responsibility for the interior because the owner's wife, Heidi, favoured using blond timbers and strongly coloured rugs to create the 'Norwegian wood' look that was popular at the time. Later, of course, Bannenberg would have as strong an influence on interiors as he had on the exterior of C arinthia, indeed, his company was given the job of redesigning the interior when the yacht was eventually sold.

The story of Carinthia V is strange: she hit an uncharted rock on her maiden cruise in the Mediterranean and sank, but instead of raising and repairing her, Horten ordered an identical replacement from Lürssen,Ca rinthia VI. Not quite identical, however, the builders put in extra watertight bulkheads to prevent a recurrence of the sinking.

After keeping the yacht for many years, Horten ordered a larger and more luxurious vessel with the same general appearance, and the 97 metre Carinthia VII , designed by Tim Heywood , was launched in 2002. Unfortunately Horten died before this yacht was completed but his wife took delivery and, after a lot of soul-searching, sold Carinthia VI .

The yacht has been renamed The One and overhauled and now has a striking interior; the exterior has a few additions and remains as dramatic and exciting as ever.
