The total booking duration is 2 hours. In these 2 hours, the sailing duration is approx. 1 hour 30 minutes. So, 1 hour 30 minutes is the time you will spend on the booked yacht.

30 minutes are kept aside for travelling from the shore to the yacht and then after sailing, from the yacht back to the shore.

No. The minimum booking duration for sailing in Mumbai is 2 hours. The actual sailing time is approx. 1 hour 30 minutes.

You have to reach the sailing venue (Jetty No. 5) just 15 minutes prior to your booking start time.

For example, if you book the 4:00 pm to 06:00 pm slot, your reporting time will be 03:45 pm

You will get to go sailing even if you reach late by some time. However, please note that the sailing time is not extended beyond your booking end time.

We do not provide assistance with parking vehicles at the sailing venue.

There is a pay and park service in the lanes around Taj Hotel. You will have to find parking on your own and then walk to the sailing venue (Jetty No. 5).

Once your plan is finalised (decided which yacht you wish to book, date and time slot), you will have to make payment to confirm the booking.

Payment can be done via bank transfer (NEFT / IMPS), UPI, Google Pay, credit card, debit card and net banking. We will share our company bank details / online payment link with you via email or WhatsApp.

Once the payment reflects in our account, the booking confirmation and related details will be sent to you via email and WhatsApp.

If you want to see Mumbai from a different perspective, one of the most memorable things you can do is go on a Mumbai boat trip. If you're on a budget, taking the ferry to the Elephanta Caves or Alibaug are options.

The season starts in October and ends in May. Boating operations are suspended during the monsoon, from June until the end of September.

My Experience

Fortunately for me, one of my friends decided to charter a boat for his birthday. It was an attractive and immaculately clean little yacht that had space for up to 10 people. Inside was room to sleep, a toilet and basin, and other facilities such as a stereo.

We were picked up from the Gateway of India late in the morning and headed to Alibaug for a picnic lunch at tucked away Awas Beach. We brought our own food and wine, and had a blissful day away from the hustle of the city. In the afternoon, we cruised around Mumbai Harbor as the sun set, and docked back at the Gateway of India in time to relax on the boat and watch the Gateway and the Taj Palace hotel become illuminated in the evening. It was one of the most magical experiences I've had in Mumbai.

Itinerary and Package Options

Boats: What to Consider

The first thing you should decide on is the type of experience you wish to have -- are you looking for a boat that's built for speed (a motor boat) or leisure (a sail boat)? You'll need to take into account the sailing capabilities of yourself and your crew. It's harder to maneuver longer yachts, so the destination will also play a big role in the size of the yacht you hire. In addition, it's necessary to consider the number of people that will be aboard, and the services you require. Do you want food and beverages to be provided, or will you bring your own?

Most yachts are hired on an hourly basis. Rates start from about 5,000 rupees for two hours, for a small boat that can fit four to six people. Larger groups of eight to 10 people can expect to pay around 10,000 rupees for two hours, going up to 15,000 rupees for boats that can accommodate 15 people.

• UberBOAT XL -- larger speedboats that can accommodate more than 10 passengers and cost 9,500 rupees one way.

What's the difference between a livery and bareboat charter? It's a heated debate in Destin

What was supposed to be just changing a couple of words in an ordinance ended up in nearly two hours of discussion at the May 20 Destin City Council meeting. 

The topic of concern was livery vessels and bareboat charters and how they are defined. 

Both are rental vessels. Livery is how the state defines them, and bareboat is a federal term. 

A livery vessel, as defined by Florida Statute 327.02, is “a vessel leased, rented or chartered to another for consideration.” 

About a dozen Destin charter boat captains spoke in favor of keeping the livery designation as it now stands for the waterways around Destin. 

Capt. Jim Green of the New Florida Girl’s American Spirit is president of the Destin Charter Boat Association, which represents 80 small businesses in the Destin area and more than 90 vessels.

“The harbor has had a lot of influx, and we’ve done a lot of work to rein in the rental vessel issue,” Green said.  

“We were getting overrun by rental vessels,” Green said. “We tried to find a fair balance in our small area that we work in ... in the waterfront of Destin harbor." 

The moratorium on liveries, and the rise of bareboat charters

In 2019, a moratorium was imposed on livery vessel permits, or medallions. In other words, no new livery vessel permits were allowed. 

In recent years, boats known as bareboat charters started to operate out of Destin. A bareboat is a boat that is bare without a captain and crew. The charterer supplies the captain and crew. 

The charter boat captains say these boats should go through all the “hoops,” such as inspections, that regular charters face. 

“With online booking services and the explosion of bareboat charters in the last few years, that is why the state redesignated them as livery operators,” Green said. 

“The DCBA feels you should leave the livery ordinance as it is,” he said, and not offer any exemptions to those bareboat charters. 

“There are medallions available, and we believe that should be the path forward,” Green said. 

He went on to explain that the charter fleet follows a “stringent standard,” and it’s there so that when people charter a boat with that Certificate of Inspection, they know the vessel is safe and complies. 

“The bareboat charter runs in kind of a gray area,” Green said. “It allows them to carry more than six, but negates them from the rigorous standard.

“Allowing an exemption and not staying within the moratorium, and all the hard work, it would be disingenuous to them,” he said. 

The temporary moratorium on livery vessel permits will not expire until June 30, 2028, according to city ordinance. 

'Private yacht charters have been a big boon'

Matt Condon, manager of Destin Private Yachts, manages four bareboat yacht charters.

Condon said before they went into business they asked whether it was legal to operate in Destin as a bareboat charter.

“The answer we were given ... if your bareboat charter is operated by a captain, it’s not subject to our livery regulations. So, we went forward,” Condon said. 

Condon said that since then, the administration at the city has changed and that “no longer applies.” 

Councilman Jim Bagby asked about how many yachts are working out of Destin. Condon said there are about 10 yacht boats in the area that have been operating as bareboat charters. 

If they can’t continue as a bareboat charter, “that will leave Destin as one of the only cities in the state that prohibits private yacht charters ... and private yacht charters have been a big boon to Destin,” Condon said. 

“I don’t see any negative to it,” he said, noting they are not in competition with the fishing charters.

He asked whether the medallions for livery vessels could be sold. 

City Attorney Kim Kopp said the city does allow them to be transferred. 

However, she said, “We do not allow new medallions to anyone that was not in business when the moratorium started. As long as it doesn’t change the number of vessels that are registered overall in the city. 

Condon said "private yacht charters are here to stay, Florida-wide."

“It benefits a lot of people, so I would rather try to find a way to navigate through this,” Condon said. 

He pointed out that a private yacht is usually registered as a recreational vessel and cannot get a fishing license unless registered commercial. 

“So, we don’t compete directly with the fishermen,” Condon said.

Council member Johnny King asked if the yacht were to take a group of people out and they all had their fishing licenses, can you take them fishing? 

“As a private boat, yes, but as a practical matter ... there’s a little wiggle room there. Does it happen? I don’t see it,” Condon said. 

“My point is, it’s not direct competition. They are in the tour business,” he said. 

'The livery is a rental. We're a private yacht charter'

Capt. Kyle Lowe of the charter boat Special K thought bareboat charters should fall into the livery category. 

“Exempting bareboat charters from the existing livery vessel ordinance would lead to uncontrolled growth,” Lowe said. 

“As a bareboat charter, the renter is supposed to supply the captain,” Lowe added. 

But that's not what is happening.  

Ryan Holloway of Holloway Yachts has four yachts. 

“We’re not going to allow any captain to take our boats ... we have a list of captains,” Holloway said. 

“The livery is a rental ... we are a private yacht charter company with private owners. We are big boats,” he said. 

Holloway said they pay thousands of dollars to ensure they comply with the Coast Guard. 

“We’re not trying to break any rules ... we’re not. We’re trying to pay taxes,” Holloway said. 

Capt. Allen Staples of the charter boat 100 Proof agreed with Green and the DCBA. 

“I’m a third-generation charter/commercial fisherman here in Destin,” Staples said. 

“The Destin charter fleet is the heart and soul of Destin ... the fisherman is Destin. And I feel like they need to be protected right now with this. It’s an opportunity to expand in a way that it doesn’t need to expand. I feel like the city needs to protect the fishermen,” Staples said. 

Charter captain after charter captain expressed the same opinions.  

"I don’t believe in bareboating. They don’t have to deal with all the regulations that we do,” Capt. Scott Robson said. 

Robson said if the bareboats, the yacht charters, are exempt from the moratorium on liveries, “You’re asking for a whole new barrage of boats ... whether there is parking for them or not.” 

Capt. Brandy Miles, who has three charter vessels, fully supported the DCBA. 

“If we decide to accept the exemption, we will see a free-for-all. Keep the medallion system. It keeps the peace for the whole fleet and harbor as well,” she said. 

Capt. Justin Destin of the charter boat Un Reel said he supported the DCBA and “it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if Destin was the only city in Florida that didn’t have this,” he said referring to the yacht charters. 

“I think we’re on a slippery slope, looking right down into Pandora’s box if this thing goes down,” Destin said. 

Capt. Stan Phillips talked about the inspection guidelines for a charter boat and said a courtesy inspection to operate as a bareboat is totally different.  

Capt. Taylor Waterfield brought up insurance issues for bareboat charters, which are hard to get if they do not have a Certificate of Inspection. 

'A lot of issues with the definitions'

Council member John Stephens said his goal in the process was to make the ordinance and definitions more clear. 

“The reason I brought up the topic was there seems to be a lot of issues with the definitions,” Stephens said. 

“Let’s hash it out and find something that works,” he said, noting he was just trying to make the job for the sheriff and code compliance officers more efficient. 

“I hope to have a new definition that doesn’t change the meaning but makes it more clear and understandable. Clarify the bareboat stipulations. Bareboats have always been a livery,” Stephens said. 

Lt. Andres Nealis, who is the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment supervisor, tried to clarify some of the definitions. 

With a bareboat charter, Nealis said, “there always has to be within the charter agreement an option for the charterer (the person who is renting the vessel) to hire their own captain. You can’t limit them to the people on your list. There has to be an opt-out clause. 

“There is no way to be a true bareboat charter without allowing the charterer to truly take control of the vessel and that means giving them the option to select a captain of their choosing, even if it’s outside the list provided,” Nealis said. 

There is currently a study underway to determine the capacity of the harbor and surrounding waterways. 

“I’ve listened to the community, and I don’t think Destin is like every coastal community,” council member Torey Geile said. 

“It’s my opinion that we need to limit as many vessels out there as possible until after the study,” Geile said. 

King said he thinks the yacht charters provide a need that people will pay for. 

“I’m not for doing away with it,” King said. 

“But I see what these (the charter fishermen) go through on a daily basis. They pour their blood, sweat and tears into making sure their boat is safe. I don’t think this should be taken lightly,” King added. 

Council member Kevin Schmidt pointed out that the yachts are “somewhat new” and people want to do it. 

He also noted it was not happening when the liveries started. 

“How can we do it, find a way to have all parties successfully operate without affecting someone's livelihood?” Schmidt said. 

“We shouldn’t miss out on the new customer base, but not impact the heritage of Destin ...  it’s a mess for sure,” Schmidt said. 

When it was all said and done, the council voted to send it back to the CRA Harbor Committee to hash it out and come back with clear definitions. 

The next Harbor CRA Advisory-Committee meeting is at 5:30 p.m. June 12.
