Byron Shirley grew up with sailboats , both in his native France , but also in the Caribbean and on the West Coast of the US . Along with having enjoyed living aboard a Gulfstar 44 and a custom 76 footer, he has been boating, racing, and doing deliveries.

Finally he followed that natural path into the boating business . A yacht broker since 2010, he’s worked for Beneteau sailboat and powerboat dealerships and sold over a hundred brokerage boats.

As a resident of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest since 2014, Byron has learned what it takes to boat in this beautiful boating region. He wants to help clients find what boats are going to be better fits for them than others, to steer you through some of the potential benefits and pitfalls of certain boat layouts and designs. The best experience is one where his clients experience minimal surprises during the sales process and their boat ownership, are able to negotiate a fair and balanced deal: The right boat, at the right price.

Byron analyzed an excellent cost comparison to other vessels which allowed an appropriate selling price for my boat. He was always prompt at answering any of my phone calls, and his communication skills with various professionals involved with the evaluation of the vessel were vital to the actual sale.

Byron enabled my vessel to receive great exposure on the yacht market listing network, and thus I received an excellent sales price with minimal time on the actual market. Denison Yachts and Byron are a great company to deal with, and I will use them again for any of my future yacht transactions.

Buying a boat can be an intimidating experience - especially when moving up to more complex boats that stretch your expertise as was the case when we bought Kraken, our Beneteau First 36.7 . Byron helped make this experience much less daunting than it might have been. He knew the boat well and got the answers we needed to make it a smooth process. When it came to that first voyage, bringing Kraken to her new home south of LA in a small weather window (almost) ahead of approaching rain Byron kindly volunteered to help, proved himself invaluable and despite the cold and dark start unflappable and a pleasure to sail with. At the end of the experience I had gained a significant amount of knowledge about the boat and confidence in my ability to sail her that might otherwise have taken much longer to achieve.

I've had some amazing life experiences in the past year of sailing, and it started with great advice, support and follow through from Byron Shirley . In the beginning I was searching for the right kind of boat; a live aboard as well as a boat that I could comfortably single hand. Alla Botvina came to the United States in 1993 from Tores, Ukraine. She studied business management at Lynn University, but her love for the ocean led her to enter work in the yachting industry as a professional crew member.

In April, when The Seattle Times published a list of every bookstore that’s been covered in the Neighborhood Reads series over the past five years, readers from all over the region wrote in to advocate for the inclusion of their favorite neighborhood bookstore.

But of all the Seattle-area bookstores that we had yet to cover, readers highly suggested — through many emails and social media messages — one in particular: West Seattle’s Paper Boat Booksellers.

So what is it that customers love about Paper Boat? “It is a special store because they know their customers,” writes Jeanne Flohr, a school librarian. “If they do not know you, they get to know you.”

Kelly Zarling notes that though Paper Boat is a fairly small store, it has “a highly curated selection of good books,” with employee recommendation cards sprinkled throughout. “I felt I couldn’t pick a bad book,” Zarling writes of a recent trip when she found “a fun book I’m not sure I would have found anywhere else about families, and a vegan cookbook my son has already stolen.”

“When I call from school with a request, they get things ordered right away if they do not have copies on the shelf,” Flohr writes, adding that, “they very kindly give school libraries a discount!”

Desirae Wilkerson and Eric Judy (a former member of the band Modest Mouse) founded Paper Boat on California Avenue by Morgan Junction Park in 2019 to fill a gap they saw when the Westwood Village Barnes & Noble closed. The married couple knows their customers are the reason their store has been such a success.

“They’re why we’re still here five years later,” Judy says. “This is a great community to be a bookstore in.”

Wilkerson agrees. “We have some customers that come in here every single week, and it’s just a second home for them.” She learns about books from her customers, citing Percival Everett’s novel “The Trees” as a recent winning customer recommendation. “I had never read anything by him before, and it was amazing.”

When Paper Boat first started, Wilkerson divided her time between the bookstore and her interior decorating business. But the store’s success eventually forced her to make a choice. “One day I just woke up and thought I have to choose one or the other because the creative part of it was suffering. So I decided I needed to go all in for the bookstore.”

Judy says the two are continually surprised at how the work of running a bookstore fills their days. “It’s just very busy work — even when it’s slow, it’s busy,” he says. “There’s always so much to do, even in such a little store. And I get the feeling that we’re very busy for a store our size.”

Aside from Wilkerson and Judy, Paper Boat employs a staff of seven part-time booksellers — a fairly large number for a relatively small shop. The owners credit their staff for keeping the store’s roughly 14,000 titles relevant to their customer’s interests. In addition to the children’s section, they say the manga, mystery, sci-fi fantasy and young adult sections have grown significantly over the last five years due to popular customer and bookseller demand. 

In fact, business at Paper Boat has been so good that the shop is looking actively to expand. “We need a bigger space, and our goal right now is to move to a bigger location,” Judy says.

“We are working with a real estate agent who’s keeping an eye out for us to see what’s coming open” in the area, Wilkerson says. “We love this little space and it’s nice and cozy, but we also want more space for events, and to get back to what our original vision was — a community space.”

In addition to enough room to host events and book clubs, Judy excitedly adds that the vision for Paper Boat’s next incarnation includes, “hopefully, coffee and more room to sit.”

Until the perfect location makes itself available, Paper Boat is experimenting with new ways to foster community engagement. After years of customer requests, the store finally launched an official Paper Boat Book Club. Their second convening, a discussion of Joseph Han’s novel “ Nuclear Family,” is on June 5 at 6 p.m., and the next book club selection will be posted on the shop’s website soon thereafter.

Ultimately, there’s no magic trick, no simple formula, to building a successful bookstore. Doing so requires any number of factors to go right: The location has to be perfect, the timing has to be just right and the community has to adopt it as its own. Paper Boat has navigated all of those potentially treacherous currents exceptionally well.

However, Judy does have one favorite customer theory of Paper Boat’s success. “I have to admit that I have read some of our Google reviews,” he says. “There was one that I read recently that I really liked. He said that he liked our store because it was ‘not overly precious.’”

Judy laughs. “I just found that to be a great compliment.”

What are Paper Boat customers reading?

Paper Boat Booksellers owners Eric Judy and Desirae Wilkerson say that even though you can find all the recent bestsellers at their store, it’s the staff recommendations that really attract customer interest.

“I wrote a shelf talker for Adrian Tchaikovsky’s “ Children of Time ,” Judy says, “and it just continues to sell.” It helps that the sci-fi thriller about the secrets of an alien planet’s evolutionary process “is just a really good book,” Judy admits.

Paper Boat bookseller Kelly recently promoted John Wiswell’s dark fantasy romance “ Someone You Can Build a Nest In ” and “we keep selling out of that one, “ Wilkerson says.

But many of Paper Boat’s perennial bestsellers have a hyperlocal connection that benefits from the neighborhood bookstore touch. Wilkerson says people who travel to nearby Lincoln Park to check out artist Thomas Dambo’s troll sculpture often stop by Paper Boat on the way home to pick up Dambo’s “little book on the mythology of the trolls called ‘The Way of the Bird King.’ We just sell it over and over again because otherwise, you can only get it from Thomas Dambo’s website.”

Local authors are a big deal, too. Susan Lieu , author of the memoir “ The Manicurist’s Daughter ,” stopped by the shop before her book’s publication to make sure they had plenty of copies on hand. And Wilkerson says, “One of my favorite authors, E.J. Koh , lives here in West Seattle. She just wrote her first fiction book in November,” and signed copies of “ The Liberators ” are always available for purchase at Paper Boat.
