Best in Class: Lagoon and Sunreef Charge Ahead with Catamarans

With sustainability cruising in mind, it makes sense that catamarans are seeing a jump in demand because these yachts are much more energy-efficient than monohulls.

Luxury catamaran builders have recently moved powercats into a new size sector. Lagoon stepped up with the Seventy 8 and Sixty 7 , Sunreef rolled out its 60 , 70 and 80 Power models, Fountaine Pajot produced the Power 67 and Aquila joined the ‘big cat’ party with the 70 Luxury, with a solar-electric version sold by Simpson Marine soon arriving in Indonesia.

However, Sunreef has raised the bar. Delivering on its ambitions to move firmly into the superyacht sector, the Polish builder handed over the first hull of the 100 Sunreef Power to its owner earlier this year and plans to display the yacht at one of Europe’s key boat shows this autumn.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary since Francis Lapp founded it in Poland in 2002, Sunreef is still on an upward spiral as it continues to develop its new 80,000sqm (8-hectare) site on the banks of the Martwa Wisla River in Gdansk on the country’s north coast.

To keep up with production across its power and sail ranges, both standard and Eco, it still operates its original facility in the historic Gdansk Shipyard and plans to do so for at least another couple of years. It now employs 1,800-2,000 people in the region, an astonishing figure for a semi-custom, luxury catamaran builder.

And the 100 Sunreef Power is no one-off. Hull two is under construction and is heavily customised, with features including an enclosed cigar lounge on the flybridge. Overall, the layout will be very different from hull one, with six guest cabins including a master stateroom on the main deck.

Late last year, the brand rounded out its modern range with the first 70 Sunreef Power launch, which joined the 80 Power launched in 2020 and the 60 Power released the following year.

“Catamarans will continue to gain more and more space on the market,” Lapp says. “This is because more and more customers are looking for more sustainable cruising. Catamarans are more energy-efficient than monohulls, and you can see many ambitious catamaran concepts emerging now. This trend will carry on in the future and we will see more demand for larger and greener cats.”

Sunreef’s push towards greener cats is led by its evolving Eco range — solar-electric versions of its existing Power and Sail models. The technology includes Sunreef’s own ‘solar skin’ panels integrated into the composite bodywork, ultralight batteries and electric or hybrid engines. Options include wind turbines, high-performance kites, and hydrogeneration systems for sailing models.

Spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso is awaiting hull one of the 60 Sunreef Power, a fully-electric version with solar panels in the hulls, superstructure and bimini roof.

Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion, said: “We are more aware and want more sustainability. We have seen important changes over the last years in global mobility, and to me it makes perfect sense to go for an electric catamaran. The world is going electric and yachts should also follow.”

In fact, Lapp says most of Sunreef’s powercat enquiries are now for Eco models. “In the coming years, we expect this trend to continue and to evolve towards an even more important demand for electric yachts.”

Large Lagoons in Asia

Lagoon Seventy 8

Lagoon , the world’s biggest pleasure catamaran builder, helped ignite the current demand for large powercats with the Seventy 8, which premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2017, following up two years later with the Sixty 7, a model it plans to show again at Cannes this year.

Lagoon has delivered over 6,000 catamarans globally and remains the most popular multihull brand in Asia. There are Seventy 8 powercats in Vietnam and the Philippines, and another unit of the flagship is due to arrive in Hong Kong this summer following a sale by Simpson Marine.

Last year, Simpson Marine staged the Asia premiere of the Sixty 7 in Hong Kong before the yacht was delivered to its owner in Taiwan, while the regional dealer has sold another unit to Hong Kong. A Sixty 7 is also due to arrive at the end of this year in the Philippines, where Lagoon is represented by Europa Yachts.

The two powercat models are part of Lagoon’s ‘Big Four’ and their sister sailing catamarans, the Sixty 5 and Seventy 7, with the builder delivering more than 50 units of the quartet. The ‘Big Four’ and the brand’s other 50ft-plus models are produced in Lagoon’s Bordeaux facility, while it also builds smaller sailing catamarans in other sites in France.

Brand Director Thomas Gailly says almost 2,000 employees work for Lagoon, directly or indirectly, in different sites. Despite production challenges due to ongoing supply-chain issues affecting most builders around the globe, he says demand is greater than ever.

“After a slowdown in 2020 due to Covid, we now have an order book like never before. Recently we’ve seen more and more people who had never thought of buying a boat start to realise their ‘home office’ could be on their boat,” Gailly says.

“The demand comes from private owners but also from the charter market, as tourism returns. Overall, the catamaran market keeps on being a very dynamic segment in the industry and we expect it to continue.”

The Leopard 45 was launched in 2017 and carried forward some of the most popular features and design aspects of earlier Leopard models. Designed by VPLP Design, the Excess 12 is considered a ‘sporty’ catamaran. It is 38 feet and 6 inches (11.74 meters). It has an open bimini and a light helm that gives it a feel similar to a monohull. Other attractive features of the Excess 12 include: 

  • A cockpit with a retractable roof that allows for direct access to sunlight

Catana is one of the world’s best catamaran producers, known for creating stable yet fast boats and for their quality finishes. Besides being produced by Catana, the Catana 50 has been architected by Christophe Barreau, a world class naval architect. Some of the best features that the Catana 50 boasts are:

The Atlantic 42 was in production in 1999 but boasts many classic features found in modern-day catamarans. The Atlantic 42 has been the recipient of Cruising World magazine’s Boat of the Year award. Noteworthy features in the Atlantic 42 include: 

  • A high waist and forward cockpit 
  • Custom aft deck allowing for easy access to the dinghy storage

The Seawind 1160 is a long-distance cruiser produced by Seawind Catamarans , a leading catamaran manufacturer designing and building catamarans for over 35 years. 

This catamaran is available in two styles : the lite Seawind 1160 and the deluxe Seawind 1160. The deluxe catamaran operates with diesel sail drives that allow for excellent torque and fuel capacity. Meanwhile, the lite version works with outboard motors that reduce the catamaran’s overall weight. It also has more storage internally on the boat, and lower maintenance and replacement costs.

Shopping for a new catamaran can be intimidating, even as consumers have more resources than ever to help them research from the comfort of their own home before they even contact a yacht broker. The great news is that there are a lot of great catamaran brands on the market right now. For us consumers, the catamaran market has evolved rapidly from what it was only just a few short years ago when monohulls were favored. On the flip-side, this can make it even more challenging to figure out which catamaran brands are the very best.

If you are a beginner in cruising catamarans, this article will help you learn the best brands that are out there with the best reputation amongst boaters. This article will help you get started in the world of catamarans, and I am trying to make it as beginner-friendly as possible. The catamaran brands on this list are mainly production boat companies, but some of them do offer custom designs. However, the added benefit of most of these brands is that there are many options on the used market. You will always be able to shop around for a good deal no matter where you are in the world.

Here are some of the best catamaran brands on the market today: 

Lagoon – Groupe Beneteau

Lagoon is a French boatbuilder with an excellent reputation and sells the largest number of catamarans per year. The brand started back in 1984 and was one of the first catamaran brands to really convince people of the concept of multihulls. The philosophy of the Lagoon brand is good design, high-quality construction, and a decent cruising performance under sail. In other words, a Lagoon is the dream of every fan of sailing that looks for a catamaran that can provide everything, whether that is a fun toy for summer sailing trips or a year-round liveaboard yacht. What Lagoon did right, and the reason it has proven to be so popular is that it listened to its customers. That is why every new Lagoon catamaran has more space, more efficient layouts, and is always more comfortable than their previous version. There is no wonder why they have so many repeat customers.

Lagoon makes 9 sailing catamaran models and 2 powercat models, ranging in length from 40 to 78 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Lagoon 380 at 37 feet, but unfortunately, it was discontinued. You can find a Lagoon on the used market starting at $150,000 (like a 2002-2007 Lagoon 380) and as high as $5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Lagoon Seventy 7, which comes with a jacuzzi on deck.

Fountaine Pajot

Fountaine-Pajot is a French maritime construction brand that is specializing in catamarans. The company was established in 1976, but it launched its first sailing catamaran in 1983 and its first powercat in 1998. This brand is now famous for building both sailing and power catamarans that have a beautiful and innovative design, superior handling, excellent seaworthiness, and cruising comfort. Also, Fountaine Pajot was one of the first catamaran brands that was manufacturing their boats with environmental protection in mind. So, all of their models have options to include renewable energy sources. Their ECO-Cruising and SMART-Cruising options considerably reduce their yachts’ carbon footprint and provide the necessary clean energy for their sailboats.

Fountaine-Pajot makes both sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 40 to 67 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Lagoon 380 at 37 feet, but unfortunately, it was discontinued. You can find a Lagoon on the used market starting at $100,000-150,000 (like a 1990-2005 Fountaine Pajot Athena 38) and as high as $3.5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Fountaine Pajot Alegria 67, which comes with a jacuzzi on the front deck.

Leopard is a boatbuilder located in South Africa and produces some of the best and most luxurious catamarans. You will find Fountain Pajor catamarans for sale also under the name “Robertson & Caine” because some Leopard cats are built by Robertson & Caine company. Leopards are mainly designed to be luxurious, big, and comfortable, but that usually comes at a cost, both in price tag and sailing speed and maneuverability. 

Leopard Catamarans was established in 2000 their partnership with South African builder Robertson and Caine. This company was manufacturing custom-designed catamarans for the global yacht charter company The Moorings. While Leopard was focusing on sailing catamarans in the beginning, in 2007, they started making powercats as well.

Leopard is always designing their boats to have the optimal balance between interior space and performance, sheltered helm cockpit designed for offshore cruising and single-handed sailing, large lounge areas, optimal comfort, and ease of maintenance. 

Nowadays, Leopard is making sailing catamarans between 42 and 58 feet and powercats between 50 and 53 feet. You can find a Leopard on the used market starting at $180,000 (like a Leopard 38) in good condition and as high as $2 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Leopard 58; however, they are not as luxurious as some of the other brand’s top-of-the-line models.

Catana catamarans are a little bit more performance-oriented. They have features that make them sail faster and be more easily maneuverable than some of the other catamaran brands on the list. Many of their boats come with a feature called daggerboard that will help you sail faster upwind, something that most catamarans struggle with. Catana Group was originally called Poncin Yachts and has been building catamarans in France since 2001. It is famous for producing catamarans for owners who most often want to go bluewater sailing around the world comfortably and safely with a high-performance boat. This is not a famous brand, but it grows in popularity very fast. Year by year, I have noticed more and more Catana catamarans in the marinas I visit. 

Catana Catamarans are built using foam sandwich vacuum infusion technology combined with carbon and aramid fiber. This combination guarantees the strength of the hull, significant weight savings, and because of this fact, higher speed.

Catana offers new boats from 42 to 70 feet. In the past, they were building boats as long as 90 feet. You can find a Catana on from the early 2000s’ on the used market for as low as $250,000, and as high as $4 million USD for a top of the line full spec’d brand new one.

Catana Catamarans

Nautitech is another catamaran brand located in France; I guess there is a pattern here. They have built a reputation for designing catamarans that are robust, seaworthy, and capable of putting sailing back into the heart of the liveaboard experience without compromising on comfort. Anyone familiar with catamarans can quickly appreciate the innovative nature of a Nautitech cat design. The brand was also the first one to introduce the concept of liveaboard living, which combines the saloon and cockpit into one spacious, functional living area.

Nautitech offers new boats from 40 to 57 feet. You can find a Nautitech on from the early 2000s’ on the used market (Like the Nautitech 40) for as low as $180,000. However, a new top-of-the-line Nautitech 54 can be spec’d up to $1.5 million USD; though, they are not as luxurious as some of the other brand’s top-of-the-line models. 

Nautitech Catamaran

The brand was founded in 1985 in France. Privilège Catamarans offer unparalleled expertise, know-how, and experience that facilitates the construction of some of the best catamarans on the market today. They can provide luxurious liveaboard life beyond coastal borders. Its elegant hull design ensures superb stability and comfort making then one of the best catamaran brands in the world right now. Every catamaran is custom-built according to the owner’s preferences and handcrafted with great craftsmanship and the finest materials.

The company specializes in the design and manufacture of some of the best, and luxurious bluewater catamarans on the water. Every new Privilege cat is built after multiple consultations between the shipyard and the owner. You can decide to either keep the catamaran in its pure and elegant look and also keep the cost as low as possible or to change it to your personal preferences and make it as high-end as you can afford.

Privilège makes both sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 51 to 75 feet. It also used to make shorted boats like the Privilege 435 at 43 feet, but unfortunately, they are now focusing on larger yachts. You can find a Privilege from the early 2000s’ on the used market starting at $300,000 (like the Privilege 435) but can easily surpass $5 million USD for their top of the line fully spec’d Privilege 745 or 740.

Gemini 

Gemini is one of the few catamaran brands that make its boats in the US. It is a subsidiary of Performance Cruising Inc., and they have been making catamarans since 1981. Honestly, Gemini catamarans might not be the most good-looking and luxurious, but they are affordable and sail well. For that reason, they definitely deserve a spot on the list with the best catamaran brands. 

You can find a used Gemini cat in good condition in good condition from the early 1990s, starting at around 50k and a newer model for as high as 500k. Overall this is a very affordable brand, and you will definitely enjoy one without breaking the bank.

Gemini Catamarans

Seawind 

Seawind Catamarans is a catamaran designer and builder located in Australia, producing high-end performance cruising sail catamarans since 1982. They have produced some of the world’s best and award-winning designs. 

The Seawind brand is especially good for people looking for a catamaran that is not overly luxurious or expensive and is probably looking for a more reasonably sized yacht; however, they do offer a couple of larger, more luxurious models as well. 

Seawind offers new boats from 35 to 52 feet. You can find one on from the early 2000s’ on the used market for as low as $150,000, like a Seawind 1000. However, a new top-of-the-line Seawind 1600 can be spec’d up to around $1 million USD.

Sunreef Yachts

Sunreef is the world’s leading manufacturer of luxury sailing and power multihulls. Each catamaran, motor yacht, and superyacht they make is a custom vessel. The company was established in 2002 in Gdansk, Poland but a Frenchman and was the first brand to build a 74-foot bluewater cruising catamaran. 

This brand has pulled all the stops when it comes to luxury and comfort. Whether you are looking for a family-friendly liveaboard cat, a luxurious private floating villa, a dazzling party boat, or a fishing expedition superyacht fantasy, their designers will turn your vision into reality. Just be prepared to pay the price. 

Sunreef makes both large sailing catamarans and powercats, ranging in length from 50 to 150 feet! You can find a Sunreef from the early the Mid-2000s on the used market starting at $700,000 (like the Sunreef 62) but can easily surpass $15 million USD for Sunreef 102. They also have the Sunreef MM460 CAT on their catalog, which is one of the largest catamarans even created. However, unfortunately, I was not able to get even an approximate price quote on it. If I had to guess, I would say at least $50 million to have one built.

Bali Catamarans is another brand of the well-known Catana shipyard. And it is also the newest brand on the list established in 2014. Catana catamarans are the golden standard when it comes to high-speed cats. However, in 2014, they decided to start a production brand of fast, light, and easily maneuverable cruising catamarans. The Bali Catamarans collection has a unique design mainly; it has no mesh “trampoline” in the front cockpit. It features an open-space interior, a huge refrigerator in the inner saloon, and many other uncommon features. 

Bali offers new boats from 39 to 50 feet. You can find a Bali on from 2014-2015 on the used market for as low as $300k (like the Bali 4.0). However, a new top-of-the-line Bali 5.7 can spec’d up to over a $2 million USD.

Final Thoughts

In order to compile the best list of catamarans, I took into account the built quality, comfort seaworthiness but also the number of yachts for sale on the used market. In my point of view, I shouldn’t have put a custom catamaran builder on this list because you wouldn’t be able to find one for sale anyway. For most of these brands, there are many boats for sale on the used market in pretty good condition and at reasonable prices.

The Power Catamaran Compilation

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power

Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.

The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open ­day-boat category with creative designs. ­Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Sunreef Yachts introduced its 50 Amber Limited Edition , with plans to launch just 10 hulls of the exclusive design.

The Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition will have a carbon fiber mast and boom, four layout options and numerous amber-colored elements, including the hull.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called ­Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18

This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Polish builder Sunreef and France’s Lagoon are leading the large power catamaran sector, as revealed in the first chapter of the ‘Multihulls Power’ feature in Yacht Style Issue 65.

Luxury catamaran builders have moved powercats into a new size sector in recent years. Lagoon stepped up with the Seventy 8 and Sixty 7, Sunreef rolled out its 60, 70 and 80 Power models, Fountaine Pajot produced the Power 67 and Aquila joined the ‘big cat’ party with the 70 Luxury, with a solar-electric version sold by Simpson Marine soon arriving in Indonesia.

However, Sunreef has raised the bar. Delivering on its ambitions to move firmly into the superyacht sector, the Polish builder handed over the first hull of the 100 Sunreef Power (see Review) to its owner earlier this year and plans to display the yacht at one of Europe’s key boat shows this autumn.

The 100 Sunreef Power has a similar layout to other Sunreef powercats but on a vast scale

Celebrating its 20th anniversary since it was founded by Francis Lapp in Poland in 2002, Sunreef is still on an upward spiral as it continues to develop its new 80,000sqm (8-hectare) site on the banks of the Martwa Wisla River in Gdansk on the country’s north coast.

To keep up with production across its power and sail ranges, both standard and Eco, it still operates its original facility in the historic Gdansk Shipyard and plans to do so for at least another couple of years. It now employs in the region of 1,800-2,000 people, an astonishing figure for a semi-custom, luxury catamaran builder.

And the 100 Sunreef Power is no one-off. Hull two is under construction and is heavily customised, with features including an enclosed cigar lounge on the flybridge. Overall, the layout will be very different from hull one, with six guest cabins including a master stateroom on the main deck.

Late last year, the brand rounded out its modern range with the launch of the first 70 Sunreef Power, which joined the 80 Power launched in 2020 and the 60 Power released the following year.

“Catamarans will continue to gain more and more space on the market,” Lapp says. “This is because more and more customers are looking for more sustainable cruising. Catamarans are more energy-efficient than monohulls and you can see many ambitious catamaran concepts emerging now. This trend will carry on in the future and we will see more demand for larger and greener cats.”

Sunreef’s push towards greener cats is led by its evolving Eco range – solar-electric versions of its existing Power and Sail models. The technology includes Sunreef’s own ‘solar skin’ panels integrated into the composite bodywork, ultralight batteries and electric or hybrid engines. Options include wind turbines and high-performance kites, plus hydrogeneration systems for sailing models.

Spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso is awaiting hull one of the 60 Sunreef Power, a fully-electric version with solar panels in the hulls, superstructure and bimini roof.

Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion, said: “We are more aware and want more sustainability. We have seen important changes over the last years in global mobility, and to me it makes perfect sense to go for an electric catamaran. The world is going electric and yachts should also follow.”

In fact, Lapp says most of Sunreef’s powercat enquiries are now for Eco models. “In the coming years, we expect this trend to continue and to evolve towards an even more important demand for electric yachts.”

LARGE LAGOONS IN ASIA

Lagoon, the world’s biggest pleasure catamaran builder, helped ignite the current demand for large powercats with the Seventy 8, which premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2017, following up two years later with the Sixty 7, a model it plans to show again at Cannes this year.

The Seventy 8 heads Lagoon’s big powercats

Lagoon has delivered over 6,000 catamarans globally and remains the most popular multihull brand in Asia. There are Seventy 8 powercats in Vietnam and the Philippines, and another unit of the flagship is due to arrive in Hong Kong this summer following a sale by Simpson Marine.

Last year, Simpson Marine staged the Asia premiere of the Sixty 7 in Hong Kong before the yacht was delivered to its owner in Taiwan, while the regional dealer has sold another unit to Hong Kong. A Sixty 7 is also due to arrive at the end of this year in the Philippines, where Lagoon is represented by Europa Yachts.

The two powercat models are part of Lagoon’s ‘Big Four’ along with their sister sailing catamarans, the Sixty 5 and Seventy 7, with the builder so far delivering more than 50 units of the quartet. The ‘Big Four’ and the brand’s other 50ft-plus models are produced in Lagoon’s Bordeaux facility, while it also produces smaller sailing catamarans in other sites in France.

Brand Director Thomas Gailly says almost 2,000 employees work for Lagoon, directly or indirectly, in different sites. Despite production challenges due to ongoing supply-chain issues affecting most builders around the globe, he says demand is greater than ever.

“After a slowdown in 2020 due to Covid, we now have an order book like never before. Recently we’ve seen more and more people who had never thought of buying a boat start to realise their ‘home office’ could be on their boat,” Gailly says.

“The demand comes from private owners but also from the charter market, as tourism returns. Overall, the catamaran market keeps on being a very dynamic segment in the industry and we expect it to continue.”

Four Most Popular Production Catamarans: How Do They Compare?

Four of the most popular catamarans on the market today are Lagoon 450, Fountaine Pajot Helia 44, Bali 4.5 or Leopard 44. They are similar in length but there are significant differences between these catamarans in profile, styling, power to weight ratios, volume, and comfort. The fundamental question is: which catamaran is the best value and which sailing catamaran is right for me? Ultimately the choice is very personal. Everybody has different criteria for what a perfect boat is. However, we want to be sure that we compare apples with apples before we make that choice. We have done a  price and specifications comparison of these popular 45ft catamaran models  to see what the real differences are. While everybody claims that their product is the best, what are the facts?

I took the two pictures in this article during boat shows when these boats were staged next to each other.

  • The first picture is of a Lagoon 450 (45.10ft length & 25.9ft beam) and the Fountaine Pajot  Helia 44 (43.5ft length & 24.3ft beam) . What a difference in volume! (Click on the picture to really see the difference in size and volume). These two catamarans are both luxuriously equipped. The Lagoon is very spacious with lots of freeboard, high bridgedeck clearance, beamy hulls and a longer water line. The Helia is markedly smaller, lighter and has narrower hulls which translates into less whetted surface area and therefor, higher performance. However, from all reports, that is not neccessarily the case. For instance, look at the results of the Arc Rally for cruisers from Las Palmas to St. Lucia 2014 (see below) where all the manufacturers are featured. Both Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot fare similarly, with Lagoon showing a slight edge in these results. These are displacement hulls and they pretty much perform to thier hull speed, unless really powered up, which will allow them to displace at higher speeds.
  • The second picture shows the bows of a Bali 4.5 and Leopard 44. The difference in freeboard and bridgedeck clearance between the two catamarans is remarkable. Here the claim is that one is much less expensive than the other but these are not the same boats! The Bali uses very high tech building methods with composite cores in the hull and deck while Leopard uses Balsa core. Core-Cell foam core is a closed cell structure that will never rot or absorb water. Balsa core, on the other hand, shows its weakness when exposed to water. The Bali is also a lot lighter because of the use of modern infusion techniques. Clearly there is a lot more boat and innovation in the Bali which justifies the price difference to a large degree. Dimensions for the Leopard 44 – Lenghth 42.7ft & Beam 23.9ft. The Bali 4.5 dimensions – Length 44.88ft & Beam 24.48ft.

None of these boats are bad boats. Each has it’s application and good or not so good points but the moral of the story is: Make sure that you compare apples with apples to ensure that you get the best bang for your buck.

Yes, the racing world is stretching the boundaries, with 100ft foiling maxi trimarans tearing around the globe and F50s, the ex- American’s Cup catamarans, now turned-up to sail at 50+ knots for gladiatorial-style stadium racing. But it’s the production monohulls, growing ever more popular among cruising sailors, that are pushing this industry forwards.

The sector is a constantly bubbling melting pot of new ideas and models – some of which we explore in this Multihull Guide. In fact, the multihull market has grown so much that the world’s largest boatbuilder is launching its second catamaran range to appeal to younger, sportier sailors.

Dragonfly 40

A new 40-foot flagship has been unveiled by Denmark’s folding trimaran specialist Dragonfly. The boat won’t reach the public eye until the Dusseldorf Boat Show in 2020, but we already have a good idea of how she will look and perform.

“The project has been influenced by past owners who moved up to larger multihulls for greater space, but reported missing the fun factor of their previous Dragonfly,” explains UK dealer Al Wood of Multihull Solutions. “Our owners and potential clients report that they don’t require more cabins when away cruising, but would welcome more living space below plus greater cockpit space for day-sailing with friends.”

The cockpit has been the focus of much of Dragonfly’s design work, with twin wheels and an optional bathing platform transom. It is also wider than on previous models, allowing sail controls to move aft for easier short-handing, and giving easy access to the stern for Med-style mooring.

The mast is in lightweight carbon – 18.5m tall for the Ultimate version of the boat or 16.5m for the Touring edition. Displacing just 4.9 tonnes in her ready-to-sail state, the boat is forecast to be capable of speeds up to 24 knots. Other details are scant at the moment, except that Dragonfly is putting the emphasis on easy handling. The trademark folding crossbeams give her a beam of just 4m, down from her full span of 8.5m. The folding process slightly increases her length – from 12.1m to 13.5m. At this size, the boat is clearly not trailerable, unlike her little sisters, but with the Quorning yard’s high reputation, expect scintillating performance.

Dragonfly 32 Evolution

Dragonfly has given the performance variant of its popular 32-footer a makeover. The old Supreme will be replaced with the Evolution, which sports a new wave-piercing float design and 20 per cent more buoyancy to make the boat more comfortable in strong winds and tougher conditions.

Interestingly, the mainsail has been trimmed by around 2.5 square metres, making the rig less powerful, but Al Wood of Multihull Solutions says that this was in response to the greater hull buoyancy. “The mainsail has a slightly reduced roach compared to earlier boats to alter the balance of the boat, which changed as these new wave-piercing floats generate significantly more righting moment with less immersion than the original design.”

The rudder section is slightly improved, to resist stalling in extreme conditions, and the new boat will premier at Dusseldorf this year. Pictured is the first 32 Evolution sailing and with the first of Dragonfly’s contemporary new Elm interiors. Price: from €276,800 Contact: Dragonfly

Lagoon 46 sailing

Lagoon says greater comfort is a key goal of its new model, the 46. The French yard has charged former Renault designer Patrick le Quément with the task of meeting owners’ expectations about comfort in a market where the ‘cruising experience is becoming a lifestyle’. The design team at VPLP has made fundamental changes to the successful formula of the old 450. Chief amongst these is moving the mast of the 46 further aft on the coachroof. As a result the jib becomes a self-tacker, and the larger forward triangle offers a greater choice of downwind sails. The boom has been shortened and the main has a higher aspect, reducing pitching.

The flybridge helm has been centred and sits directly behind the mast, which means that the footwell protrudes slightly into the cockpit below – something that has been disguised by turning it into a deep frame for the sliding aft windows of the saloon. There’s a sliding stool in the cockpit, and a hydraulic bathing platform.

Italian designer Nauta has made efficient use of the available space with queen-sized beds in all three (or four) cabins, plus a stylish-looking saloon. At 16.6 tonnes displacement, this is no lightweight racer, but it will get you to your destination in comfort.

Sneak peak: XCS by Beneteau

In the hotly-contested 40-something foot category, the Groupe Beneteau team behind Lagoon and CNB luxury monohulls is carving out a new cat brand called XCS. It is pitched at younger, sportier sailors with the tagline ‘be immoderate’. That translates in part to a bigger sailplan than ‘standard’ cruising cats, and with a higher aspect ratio – that is, tall and thin. This positions the mast further aft and allows a self-tacking jib.

The boats will also feature twin aft helm stations, in contrast to many production cats. “It is the ideal position to keep an eye on the sea and sails, whether windward or leeward, and above all, it provides the most sensations at the helm,” explains project director Bruno Belmont. He also says that having a low boom close to the bimini will increase the mainsail’s performance. There will be plexiglass in the hardtop for a better view of the sails, or the option of a fully retractable bimini. Snippets of video posted online hint at a longeron between the bows offering a tack point for reaching and downwind sails. And the hull has heavily bevelled topsides with a striking chine just above the waterline, as well as generous curved hull lights. Three interior layouts will be available, with pared down furniture to save about a tonne of weight. It all adds up to a boat that should be faster than the standard cruising cat, though short of the “super fast” technical offerings from the likes of HH and Gunboat. “We want to be on the sporty side of the main cruising cat brands,” adds Belmont. “It won’t be an elitist range, but a brand where you get more sailing pleasure.” There will be five sizes from around 36ft to 50ft, and the first two models will be launched at Cannes Boat Show in September.

Fountaine-Pajot 45

The French bluewater cruising cat specialist has continued its range refresh with a replacement for the hugely successful Helia 44, which has sold 260 hulls since 2012. The new 45 was drawn by Berret Racoupeau, and is slightly bigger in all dimensions. In line with current trends, it offers more creature comforts but at the cost of nearly 1.5 tonnes additional weight than the Helia. That is partly offset by a larger 74m2 main and by a lower wetted surface. “It means a higher top speed and more comfortable under engines,” says marketing manager Helene de Fontainieu.

What you get for the extra weight is compelling. The bulkhead helmstation has been remodelled to improve line handling. Inside there is a bigger saloon with a huge galley down the port side and a dedicated navstation aft. There’s the new 8.5m2 forward lounging space, a barbecue in the transom seat and the option of a hydraulically lowering ‘beach club’ (swim platform and tender lift). There are still sunbeds on the coachroof, and a seating area on the flybridge. The designers have introduced more light, with extra glazing in the saloon and  the cabins. Update: Gunboat 68

After years of development and design work and over a year in build, the first Gunboat 68 has emerged from the yard at La Grande Motte, southern France, and will be launched in late January. Hulls two and three are also in build. Fresh details have emerged about the design itself. The hull is finished with paint rather than gelcoat in order to save weight, and to allow customisation to continue long after the boat emerges from the mould. Hull one is painted in dark silver Awlcraft, containing real flakes of metal. Meanwhile, the interior finish is super-light fabric panels that can easily be removed and offer a degree of insulation as well. “The bulkheads are, in effect, triple glazed,” says Gunboat COO William Jelbert.

The high-aspect, heavily raked rig comes in performance cruising and regatta versions. In the first, the boat will only fly a hull in more than 20 knots of true wind, whereas the racing rig achieves this at 16 knots with a rotating mast that is 4m higher. Velocity predictions suggest the regatta rig will perform 12 per cent better upwind and 20 per cent better downwind.

Gunboat also went back to basics with Jefa to design the steering system with the help of Michel Desjoyeaux. The 25kg carbon blades are fully retractable, sacrificial in the event of a collision and the whole system is designed to support T-foil rudders in the future. First look: ITA 14.99

A combination of sharp design, punchy performance potential, comfort and build quality brings plenty of appeal to this sporty new Italian-built cat. Its light displacement of 10.5 tonnes (fully loaded 13.5 tonnes) is impressive thanks to an E-glass epoxy-infused build with carbon strengthening. “She’s reactive and stiff,” said designer Francois Perus during its debut at Cannes Boat Show, adding: “as soon as there’s a bit of wind she just wants to go.” The layout will suit those wanting to actively helm. I like the position of the helmstations, with optional swing-out wheels, which give good forward views over the low coachroof. A central aft winch is employed for halyards and reefing lines, which helps keep the cockpit clear of lines. Despite the lightweight composite build, weight is permitted where it will aid comfort, such as with the use of proper glass windows surrounding the coachroof and resin worktops in the galley. Elsewhere furniture is built in sandwich balsa with a teak veneer finish. Price: €890,000 ex VAT. Contact: Ita Catamarans

Dufour 48 Cat

Designed and built in Italy, the first Dufour catamaran was hastily finished in time for the Cannes Boat Show last September. “This is the only cat of this size with a proper flybridge” said Umberto Felci on showing me his new design, “which is divided into three areas of driving [single helm], seating and sunbathing”. The flat coachroof top is huge, which, together with the flybridge seating is designed to act as a second cockpit. The aft position of the mast meanwhile creates a sizeable area for a self-tacking, non-overlapping jib. There are nicely proportioned amounts of space inside for the cockpit, main deck and galley. I like the island worktop around the mast base to extend the galley. Guest cabins each have their own companionway entrance.

Sunreef is a ‘small family business’ that has grown to its current €50m turnover, said CEO Francis Lapp. He was addressing at least 30 journalists on the aft deck of the first Sunreef 80. The boat is the queen of a new range that sees the Polish firm targeting the large charter market of 50ft–80ft crewed cats (around 80% of Sunreefs go to charter). Business is booming, according to Sunreef, which says it has sold eight of the new 80s, eight 60s and ten 50s off the plans. Sunreef already has 500 employees and is looking for more to help meet this incredible demand.

The amount of space on offer on the new 60 and 80 has to be seen to be believed. The designs feature enormous open-plan saloons and adjoining cockpits, which are designed with very little fixed furniture – allowing them to be customised or to double as party lounges. And the flybridges, mostly with Jacuzzis, offer alfresco dining areas and yet more sun lounging space (oh, and the helmstations). The first 60 to launch is a charter version with five guest cabins, while the privately owned 80 has the largest owner’s cabin I’ve ever seen on any size sailing yacht.

McConaghy MC60

The MC50 stole the show when it launched at La Grande Motte in April last year. Just four months later, McConaghy was back with its second Jason Ker design, the MC60, at Cannes Boat Show. It’s very much the larger sister and similar design to the MC50, sharing many of its standout features, including the aft flybridge helmstations, hydraulic centreboards and the sumptuous open-plan saloon and galley. Its main benefits come down to volume and length. “You get more waterline length for not much more weight,” says Ker of the MC60. There’s more empty bow space and a lot more volume. The British designer also thinks it’s a size that can still be owner-operated – indeed there’s not even a dedicated crew cabin option. McConaghy says the helm set-up, with its full views over the bows, suits those who want to sail the boat by themselves without a crew. The question remains how comfortable this position may prove in a seaway. The Design Unlimited interior is styled to suit each owner. The first boat has a very pale finish with light oak veneer masking the foam sandwich build. Again it’s the huge electric opening side windows and three longitudinal skylights in the saloon that help provide the overall wow factor.

Never has a catamaran of this size offered so much living space. Bali takes its outdoor/indoor concept to a whole new level with its new flagship 55-footer. Similar to its previous designs, Bali uses an open one-level saloon, galley and aft cockpit area, with a garage-style glass door that swings down to close off the aft when required. The flybridge is also enormous, with the majority of space given to leisure area, however the boom is pushed up high and there’s only one helmstation. Accommodation space is also vast, stretched to both ends of the hulls. A solid deck is preferred to a trampoline to help increase foredeck cockpit space and forepeak cabins. Two aft compact cabins meanwhile, accessed from the aft deck, also help maximise the number of cabins available. These use clever doors that hinge up like car bonnets, which will likely only suit fair weather sailing. The four main transverse double guest cabins in the central hulls, meanwhile, are simply enormous.

Today, the segment of luxury catamarans over 20 meters in length is the most vibrant part of the market, and those models best represent the successful evolution of this vessel type and lifestyle. In Croatia, the presence of catamarans is primarily felt in charter fleets, and they represent the most attractive part of the charter market. The largest among them exceed in price and dimensions many luxury yachts available for charter in Croatia .

We have selected some of the largest and most luxurious catamarans on the market today, the popularity of which is evidenced by the fact that at least five new models – their larger or smaller sisters – are getting ready to debut by the end of 2022.

The Eco version has most of the hull covered with solar panels, that generate 32 kW of electricity for the electric engines. The interior can be sustainable in terms of fabrics and materials, which gives this luxury yacht a whole new dimension. Particularly interesting is the Power 80 Eco, which allows speed freaks to quench their thirst in the most environmentally responsible way imaginable. The weight to power ratio of the model is 5.2 kg / kWh, while the solar panels cover 200 square meters of her hull.

On this truly eco-avant-garde luxury catamaran, the air conditioning system is powered by direct current, as is the production and purification of water. The best version of the model has the master cabin in the bow, with an en suite and amazing sea views. The propulsion ranges from between 2 x 575 to 2 x 1200 hp, with a fuel tank of 8000 l. The huge salon has several zones; a corner for the skipper, a lounge, a dining room, all of them gathered around the central mast. The bow sundeck and crew cabins are both more generous than on most other models in the segment, and the master is absolutely sensational, fully independent and equipped with a glass frame that descends via hydraulics rising to become a spectacular private terrace.

With a maximum of 2 x 230 hp and 2800-liter fuel tank, this cat is safe to sail even without the wind, but still has a 205-square meter mainsail. Her two generators combining a total of 46 kW supply electricity to all systems. The fly is accessible via winding stairs, and large enough to install optionals like a jacuzzi or a sunbed. We took Sixty 5 for a two-day trip in the waters around the island of Šolta , and she had us fully convinced of her luxury.

Fountaine Pajot Alegria 67

Fountaine Pajot will soon celebrate half a century of production of top catamarans, and their current largest model is Alegria 67. Modern and rounded bow, voluminous stern and fly, and large glazed surfaces reveal the French have placed special attention to charm, as they usually do. Different from what one might expect, FP 67 is a successful attempt to redefine life on 20-meter long multi-hull boats.

The options are many, but the one we particularly like has a galley in the left hull, and four cabins with en suites. Owners can choose the six-cabin charter version, or the master version, with a large master and two guest cabins, as well as a cabin for a small crew. In the interior, especially in the salon, the designers made an effort to make everything look more luxurious than usual, using variety of high-quality materials and fabrics.

Privilège catamarans have been present on the market for almost forty years, but it seems that the acquisition by the Hanse Group launched them into the trend-setting group. Their new Privilège Signature 650 aspires to be among the leading luxury catamarans in her segment, which is not an easy task. Slightly curved fly carriers, panoramic windows and portholes are just some of the modern details on this brand new model.

The standard layout includes a large owner’s suite with an en suite, as well as three guest cabins. Our favorite layout places the galley below deck, allowing the cockpit to grow to unbelievable dimensions. By connecting the tables and the large L-shaped sofas that accommodate up to 12 people this space can be converted into a large sunbed.

The aft platform is able to lift a tender or jet-ski up to 600 kg, in addition to allowing swimmers easy and safe access to the water. The fly deck is accessible from the cockpit or via a starboard staircase, and the central U-shaped sofa and the adjacent table offer a great spot to socialize, especially when covered with a bimini. It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

    I chose the 5X and we average 9-11 knots for long passages sailing conservatively. We regularly sail >15 knots and can sail >20. All three you suggest are nice boats but they are increasingly large in size, so IMHO Sunreef is "bigger/nicer" than the Lagoon which is similarly bigger than the FP.
