Bristol vs. Sabre Vs. Tartan or others
A fast PHRF rating for a modern 38 foot racer/cruisers are down around in the 21 to 30 range. -Bristol 35.5 or 38.8-. These are solid, low tech boats. They are not very good in the prevailing light air of a Chesapeake summer but they really come more alive in breezes approaching 10-12 knots.
Tartan 3500 vs Sabre 362
Re: Tartan 3500 vs Sabre 362. Very similar boats in a lot of ways, but the Sabre is likely a few bucks more and will feel a lot bigger inside than the Tartan, thanks to the foldaway dining table; it also has a higher displacement and higher comfort ratio, so likely to feel like a bit more boat all around.
Sabre 34 versus Tartan 34
Sabre 34 does come with a rear head in the Targa model (which I have). Here are a few reasons why I picked the Sabre over the Tartan: 1) Individual chainplates for forwards, aft and cap shrouds vs Tartan's one chainplate. 2) The Sabre is a stick built boat with all furniture tabbed to the hull vs Tartan's partial fiberglass pan in the 34. The Sabre is certainly newer, so fittings and equipment may be in better shape. Practical Sailor's Used Boat Buyers Guide has a good article on the Tartan - don't remember if it has anything about the Sabre- I loaned my copy out and haven't gotten it back. We pass both these boats to leeward, so don't go crazy expecting fantastic performance.

The liferaft valise atop the cabin is a minor obstruction. The boat carries a double-headsail rig with a reacher and a self-tacking inner jib. The mainsail aboard our test boat flew from a Leisure Furl boom, which worked perfectly. With an air draft of less than 63ft, the Tartan 395 will be able clear bridges on the ICW.

Tartan 4100: On Deck. The Offshore Spars rig has double aft-swept spreaders and a split backstay for easy access to the swim step. The chainplates are near the cabinhouse, which leaves nice wide side decks. Teak handrails on the cabintop provide something to hang on to when heeling. All sail controls are led aft.

Tartan 40's are nice, though. Good sailers, double quarter cabin aft, excellent storage. It's a better boat than the Sabre 38 MK2, and probably equivalent to the 402. I don't know how it stacks up against the 42 foot Sabres.

In the last few years, Tartan Marine has come out with a range of new models, including the T-28, the 3500 and the 4600. A 41-footer is in the works.
