Neil Salter
Mylor Yacht Harbour has announced that its new managing director will be Neil Salter.
He will replace Roger Graffy, who has stepped down after 20 years in the role.
Salter has spent the last 18 years working with Marina Development Limited (MDL), managing some of the largest marinas and their related operations in the UK.
He has also set up marinas in Spain and Italy and has consulted widely within the industry.
Devon-born Salter has now moved to Cornwall from Southampton to head up the state-of-the-art marine business.
![who owns mylor yacht harbour Roger Graffy and Neil Slater of Mylor Yacht Harbour](https://keyassets.timeincuk.net/inspirewp/live/wp-content/uploads/sites/22/2016/04/Roger-and-Neil-Welcome-to-MYH-606x400.jpeg)
Neil Salter (right) will replace Roger Graffy as managing director
Mylor Yacht Harbour has been built up by Graffy after he took the helm two decades ago.
Spotting its huge potential, he and his co-owner, wife Dinah, set about a £7 million investment programme to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marinas.
They aimed to match Mylor’s fabric and infrastructure to its natural environment.
Speaking following his appointment, Salter said: “This is a golden chance I couldn’t miss – a chance to use all my years of experience in the marine field, working with a fantastic team and building on Roger’s great legacy – all in one of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles.”
Nearly 100 people applied for the position.
Graffy explained while Salter was “the dream candidate”.
“We needed someone who would share our values and was capable of building and growing the business and all the people in it,” said Graffy, who will remain as chairman and, with Dinah, will continue to own the company.
“We also wanted to find someone who was better than me – and I’m delighted to announce that such a person exists!” he continued.
“Neil believes in building great teams, delivering excellent customer service, developing sites, working safely and maximising financial performance – all of which makes him our dream candidate for the job,” concluded Graffy.
Salter will be in overall charge of all Mylor Yacht Harbour’s operations.
This includes its marine team of engineers, technicians and boat-builders, its boat storage and marina activities and developments.
The search is on for a new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall.
Roger Graffy has announced he is stepping down from the post. Although he will be less involved in the day to day management of the company, he will still remain as chairman and owner.
Graffy. who had a childhood passion for the sea and boats, spent 20 years and millions in investment turning Mylor Yacht Harbour into a thriving, state of the art marine business.
He and his wife, Dinah bought Mylor Yacht Harbour in 1997 after recognising its potential.
Mylor’s enormous natural charm had made it a draw for the yachting community from the 1960s and 200 years earlier it was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports.
The husband and wife team set about a £7 million investment programme “to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marina – matching the fabric and infrastructure of this Cornish gem to its incomparable natural environment. Their vision – and investment to date – has enabled the creation of a modern marina and onshore facilities, securing the preservation of the historic buildings, landscape and working traditions for future generations,” said a press release from the company.
Recent shore-side development has seen the building of a new yacht club, café and shops, shower blocks and a new marina office – counterbalanced with the demolition of the dilapidated old yacht club in order to save and protect the Grade II Listed Quay on which it stood.
“This has been a hugely rewarding project and a big part of my life,” says Graffy. “It’s taken all the energy of our fantastic team of 45 and support from the whole community including berth-holders, customers, fishermen, local council and holidaymakers. We’ve continued to thrive and expand the yard with our Marine Team of expert craftsmen and technicians who have the world-class skills to match any vessel – ancient or modern.”
One of Graffy’s proudest achievements with his team was realising a dream to build the first new classic wooden Falmouth Sunbeam yachts in 20 years – built in the Mylor sheds on exactly the same lines as their 90-year-old sisters.
“I’m about to turn 60 and Mylor has occupied my energies and enthusiasm for the past 20 years,” says Graffy, “so I think it is a good time to hand the helm to someone brilliant with the vision to keep this wonderful business and way of life growing and thriving into the future.”

History of Mylor Yacht Club
The early days.
Mylor Yacht Club was started in 1963 by the four directors of Mylor Yacht Harbour. They were all keen yachtsmen and founded the club as a place to have a drink after taking part in the Sunday Pursuit race. The building at the end of the quay was available for this purpose.
The Club then joined in with Helford River Sailing Club and ran a series of Sunday pursuit races through out the summer as well as holding the annual regatta in Falmouth Week. In the mid 70’s the Old Gaffer series of races was incorporated into two evening races for Gaffers, Working Boats and Yachts – the Whisky Race and the Cup Race eventually extended to the current evenings Series. Offshore races were added to Scillies, Dartmouth, the channel islands and a feeder race to Cork. Fun events were also introduced such as a dinghy pub crawl up the creeks, nautical treasure hunts and barbecues. Members used to run the club on a rota basis and those on a Sunday would provide a variety of sandwiches, rolls etc for lunch. Later a full time steward was employed.
In the 1970s a ladies loo was added though only accessible from outside, but a vast improvement on the elsan chemical toilet in a small shed outside the club on the quay. The men’s open air “pissoir” survived until about 2007.
In 1983 the Club was extended by building out in the D. Workshops and RYA courses were introduced and the club continued to grow eventually leading to the need for a larger premises.

Mylor Yacht Harbour
Safeguarding the next generation of marine professionals…
Mylor Yacht Harbour with its contemporary Marina, working boatyard, eateries and clustered holiday cottages combines state of the art facilities with an illustrious maritime history, all set at the heart of one of the world’s most beautiful and sheltered waterways – the Carrick Roads on the south Cornish coast.
Its understated elegance provides the peaceful haven for luxury yachts and fishing craft, transatlantic voyagers and day cruisers as well as a keenly competitive racing community. Visiting yachtsmen and women find a friendly welcome from the marina staff and expertise on-hand from Mylor’s Marine Team of comprehensive boatyard specialists where all mechanical and service requirements are catered for.
Mylor is a hidden gem on the banks of the Fal Estuary in an Area of Outstand Natural Beauty. Secluded and tranquil yet it’s a short hop across the water to the bustle of the historic Port of Falmouth or the glorious coast, coves, inlets and beaches of St Mawes and the Helford River.
Two hundred years ago in the great days of sail Mylor was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports; with consistent investment through the last 20 years it is now one of the South West’s busiest boatyards and marinas with first class pontoon berths and swinging moorings anchored in some of the country’s finest sailing waters.
The company continues to invest in skills development through its own apprenticeship scheme and ongoing work with local schools and collages to promote careers within the marine sector for young people in the south west and beyond. As testament to this commitment Mylor is embarking on a project that will see a new generation of GRP Sunbeam sailing yachts to be finished in Falmouth by the next generation of boat builders.

Mylor Churchtown Heritage Board –
Also known as mylor harbour .
A Heritage board is located on the wall by the lower entrance to the St Mylor church yard.
Mylor Churchtown’s long and fascinating history dates back to at least the Bronze Age and echoes the arrival of early Celtic Christian missionaries.

People have probably lived, and died, here since ancient times. Bronze-age objects have been found and ‘cregoes’ – an ancient word for burial grounds – appear on old maps of the area. The cross now outside the south-door of the Church may have been originally a pre-Christian menhir or standing-stone. Made into a cross, the stone once also served as a buttress before being righted into its current position during church restoration in 1870. Celtic missionaries, including St Milor or Melorius of Brittany who names the area, are thought to have brought Christianity here in the fifth century. See leaflets inside the Church for more about the Church.

Fresh water springs used by early settlers were later tapped by the Admiralty for ships during the Napoleonic Wars. The associated dock-yard’s jetty and buildings are still in use today.
The Royal Navy dock-yard also supported the boys’ training ship HMS GANGES , when anchored across the river from 1866 to 1899.Some 14000 boys trained for the Fleet in HMS GANGES, and the fifty or so who died in that time, mainly apparently from what are not now usually fatal illnesses, are commemorated at the top of the churchyard. The names of almost forty local servicemen who died during the two World Wars, together with the seven civilians killed when the area was bombed in 1941, are recorded on the War Memorial just outside the lych-gate.

The Free French Navy made daring secret missions from Mylor Harbour in disguised fishing-boats during the Second World War. A concrete girder ‘ gridiron ’ (now buried) and two mini-jetties called ‘dolphins’, (only one of which survives) were built to service D-Day landing craft. New – or Admiralty – Quay was built between them as part of 1950’s Government plans to feed outlying areas in case of another war.

There is still some small sustainable fishing out of Mylor Harbour, including seasonal oyster-dredging using only traditional methods. Two thriving sailing-clubs and two major and several ancillary marine industries support the huge increase in leisure activity on the water seen since the last War.
Take some time to explore the area, where you will also find traces of naval activity dating from Napoleonic times to the Second World War.
