Guide to the Ionian Islands

An eclectic mix of idyllic charm and spirited adventure

The Ionian Islands are a captivating yacht charter destination. With seven stunning islands strewn along the Ionian Sea, this intoxication location is irresistible. Steeped in exotic scenery and laced with wildflowers each of the islands are unique in culture and natural beauty.

Boasting a profusion of influences from British and French cultures, the Ionian Islands each exude a different feel to their Aegean neighbours with individuality projecting from their traditions, architecture and atmosphere. Saturated in the Grecian sun just to the west coast of the mainland, the Ionian Islands have long been a popular yacht charter destination. From adrenaline fuelled activities to peaceful walks around quaint towns steeped in antiquity the Ionian Islands offer a plethora of opportunities for every visitor. Inspiration is easily found in trekking the richly-forested mountains, dive into the deep iridescent sea or windsurf off the pebbly coastline. As they are generally less windy than the Aegean Islands, the Ionian Islands are often popular in the summer for luxury yacht charters.

Corfu To the north of the Ionian Islands lies Corfu , draped with a myriad of hidden treasures, this beautiful island radiates a tangible buzz which is palpable for all who visit. Meander along olive groves and roam along the stunning villages inland, each offering a vivacious character. To the islands capital of Corfu Town, guests will find an abundance of picture perfect harbours, quaint anchorages and romantic town squares. For those intrigued by Greece’s eventful history, there are many opportunities beyond the capital to admire the remnants of an ancient world.

Cephalonia Cephalonia, or Kefalonia, is one of the most famous Ionian Islands as well as being the largest. Brimmed with copious mountains and an assortment of idyllic beaches, this island is perfect for sun worshippers. The town of Fiskardo is steeped in history, being the only town to survive the islands devastating earthquake, the streets have many stories to tell. The capital of Argostoli is as cosmopolitan as they come. Explore this intriguing town of venetian buildings and verdant forests.

Ithica Ithica is a quaint and island which emulates a seductive elegance and charm. Home to Homer’s Odysseus, what this tiny island lacks in size is made up in unparalleled opulence. Considered to be the diamond of the Ionian Islands, Ithica is overflowing with chic cafes, designer shops and charming bars.

Zakynthos Surrounded by azure waters and lush with greenery, Zakynthos is a magical and vibrant island. With a lively social scene and an invigorating nightlife this island boasts the very best of ultimate relaxation with dancing into the small hours.

The Ionian Islands are an idyllic Mediterranean charter vacation boasting myths, legends and heroes of a time gone by which lures visitors back time and again. If you are interested in exploring the clear waters of the Heptanese, there is a wide selection of superyachts which are available for private rental, view all crewed luxury Greece charter yachts on our website.

Kefalonia Beach

GREEK IONIAN ISLANDS

Located on the west coast of greece, the ionian islands are known for their stunning white sand beaches and lush greenery. there are six main archipelagos: corfu, zakynthos, paxi (paxos) in the north and lefkada, kefalonia and ithaki in the south with the most popular being corfu, zakynthos and kefalonia. as well as the main islands, there are dozens of smaller islands. no wonder it is a prime yacht charter destination – these sailing grounds were made for island hopping..

Historically and culturally, the islands have strong connections to Italy as many of the islands were once occupied by the Venetians. You can still see their influence in the architecture of Corfu Town, Zakynthos Town, and Argostoli. Surrounded by wonderful cliff-backed beaches, many of which are protected. The interiors of the islands are verdant for much of the year. Many small, deserted bays are perfect for water sports or just to drop anchor and chill, swim and relax for a few days. There are lots of caves to explore and the many little ports offer excellent restaurants and bars, along with a warm welcome from the locals.

Overlooking the bay at Zakinthos Island

Diving in the Ionian Islands

Chios is rated as the best diving island in greece. oyster charter will arrange the perfect dive with a local dive company. every type of dive is available here from exploring caves and tunnels, to incredible wall dives and an array of wrecks to check out. over in zakynthos, you will find the main nesting spot for loggerhead sea turtles amongst the teeming sea life including parrotfish, flying fish, eels and octopus..

There are many wrecks to keep technical divers busy – from the early 20 th Century to the late 1990s. RMS Britannic was a sister ship of the RMS Titanic that lies off Tzia (Kea) under 120m of water. Used as a hospital ship during WW1, she was sunk by a mine in 1916.

The wreck of the Peloponisos lies just off Mykonos. A passenger-cargo ship, that sank in July 1926 is in very good condition. She broke into two pieces as she sank and is a destination for experienced divers as she lies at 55m. The Peloponisos acts as an artificial reef, where you can see all kinds of marine life.  Also worth a visit close to Mykonos is the wreck of Anna II. This 203ft cargo ship sank with a cargo of cement in 1995. Under 25m of water, she is in great condition and a great wreck to explore.

The wreck of HMS Perseus, a British submarine that sank in 1941 after hitting an Italian mine lies 11km off Kefalonia. The well-preserved wreck is mostly intact – its compasses still work and show the course she was heading on when she hit the mine. The mine’s anchor can still be seen close by.

The best time for sailing charters in the Greek Ionian Islands

With an average of 315 cloudless days each year, the Greek Ionian Islands are a great option for yacht charters at almost any time. Peak season runs from April to October, with azure skies and temperatures from 19°C in April and between 25°C and 29°C in mid-summer. The water temperature is between 17°C in April, to 26°C in the summer.

Whatever way you prefer spending your time on holiday, your crew will tailor the experience to your needs down to the last detail so that you can truly make the most of your luxury yacht charter from our bases in Lefkas or Corfu.

You may be wondering why you should prefer a fully crewed yacht charter over a bareboat charter with added crew. What makes a luxury, crewed yacht charter in the Ionian so unique is that it has permanent, dedicated crew very familiar with the exact boat and sailing region and working well as a team to ensure a truly stress free holiday. Crewed yachts are also usually much more premium with many luxury add ons such as air-conditioning, generator, watermakers, TV-DVD, microwaves, dishwashers and even leisure amenities such as a jacuzzi.

Our luxury Ionian catamarans and sailing yachts

Picking the right luxury yacht for your Ionian charter will be a seamless procedure with the guidance of our luxury yacht charter consultants. The initial information you will need to share in order for us to be able to guide you to the right yachts is the number of people you will be on board with and the crew members you require. Usually, permanent crew have their own, separate accommodations, however, it’s always good to check the number of berths on board, especially when wanting to hire additional crew members.

Ionian Catamarans has a wide portfolio of luxury yachts, from sailing catamarans to powercats and even superyachts over 80ft.

The captain/ skipper: Your captain will be the lead member of the crew responsible for the navigation, sailing and mooring of the boat, the safety of the crew and guests as well as the seamless cooperation of the crew.  He will also act as your local guide sharing information about local history, sightseeing, swimming spots and recommendations for restaurants, bars etc. Importantly, your captain will create and be responsible for the itinerary. The itinerary on a luxury yacht charter in the Ionian is completely flexible and based on your preferences, although the captain may need to alter it, should he believe that prevailing weather conditions threaten the safety or comfort of everyone on board.

The hostess: Your hostess will be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of your boat and generally ensure that you enjoy an unsurpassed level of comfort and luxury.  They will assist the skipper and chef when needed so that you truly don’t have to lift a finger during your holiday.  When not paired with a chef, the hostess will also take care of the provisioning and preparing and serving simple meals and drinks.

The cook/chef: One of the things that make luxury yacht charters so special is that most fully crewed yachts come with a permanent chef on board – this means that you won’t have to spend any time in the kitchen during your holiday (unless you want to of course!). Your chef will create a full menu of gourmet dishes and exquisite drinks based on your preferences and dietary or allergy needs and they will also take care of the provisioning and cleanliness of the kitchen area. Different luxury yachts come with different crew combinations, some featuring a captain and hostess duo, while others also have a permanent cook/chef and or deckhand. Kindly get in touch with our experienced yacht charter consultants to find the yacht and crew that best matches your needs.

Things to keep in mind when considering a luxury yacht charter in the Ionian

A luxury yacht charter is essentially an all-inclusive package experience, however, this is offered in the form of the obligatory A.P.A. (advanced provisioning allowance) that is payable on top of the charter fee.

This amount (usually 20% of the charter fee) covers operational expenses for bunkering, food supplies and any other incidental expenses like:

  • Fuel consumption for running the engine and the generator (depending on fuel rate and cruising hours)
  • Gasoline and lubricants for the use of the tender
  • Food – Drinks and spirits as per supermarket receipts
  • Delivery fees (TBA if applicable)
  • Marinas’ fees, if any (only private marinas)
  • Agent/Marina fees abroad (if applicable)

Another thing to consider is tipping the crew. While it is not obligatory in Greece, it is customary, especially when you are satisfied by the service provided on board. We suggest approximately 10% of the charter fee to be offered as gratuity to the crew.

The Islands of Ionian provide the ideal setting for an exhilarating and authentic Eastern Mediterranean yachting holiday for those looking for a rustic Greece luxury yacht charter experience. An Ionian yacht charter will take in the popular island destinations within this region, including the islands of Zakynthos , Ithaca , Kefalonia, Paxi and Corfu and these famous islands are seeing an increase in visits by private superyachts, as is the rest of the Mediterranean and Greece.

Known as the “Seven Islands” of Greece, yacht charter sailors and tourists from various points of origin visit the Ionian islands each year, and their number hits all-time high during the summer months. This is all the more reason to be relaxing at sea where you can unwind away from the crowds. Amongst the top attractions for visitors to the Ionian Islands are the idyllic sandy beaches and sunshine - which together produce one of the best Mediterranean vacation experiences in all of Greece. Here you have beautiful azure waters and breath-taking verdant views of the Greek landscape as your backdrop.

If you are spending your holiday in the Ionian Islands for the first time, you will learn that the islands in the region are dotted by several secular communities. Ionian Islands are actually composed of several islets surrounding the larger islands, which include the favourite holiday destinations of returning yacht charterers. The aggregate land area of all the islands in the region accounts for almost 2 percent of the total land mass of Greece.

The Ionian Islands feature top-of-the-range and rustic facilities to suit the purpose and interests of your yacht charter group, and everything that a yacht charter holidaymaker would expect from an ideal resort destination. Sailors and yacht charterers will find several marinas within the Ionian Islands, and all of them are properly-equipped and positioned in various strategic locations within the region.

From the perspective of sailing yachts, this group of exotic islands and their various marinas provide sailors and tourists on board a charter yacht with a plethora of anchorages and excellent conditions to travel from one port to the next.

This exotic and idyllic yacht charter destination easily comes to mind when thinking of a place where you can spend some relaxing time to discover and enjoy an authentic Mediterranean holiday.

Ionian Islands Yacht Charter Experiences

The lush landscape of Ionian Islands, considered as the greenest and richest among all of the island destinations in the region, is one of the best reasons why you have to set sail to its islands on your holiday vacation in Greece . Seasoned sailors and repeat visitors to the islands swear that the enthralling view of the local terrain is what we normally imagine of our dream holiday in a Greek paradise.

Important aspects of your yacht charter holiday in Ionian Islands are the archaeological landmarks, artefacts and architectural marvels of historical significance. These important relics are the clear testaments of the rich history and culture of Greece and highlight the strong influence of Venetian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman civilizations.

Before it became a favourite destination of sailors and tourists spending their holidays on board luxury yachts, Ionian Islands were primarily known for its sheep herding, agriculture and fishing industries. Today, you will be thrilled by the warm reception of locals who have grown to enjoy the presence in their shores of tourists coming from all points of the Globe.

Corfu has long been a popular tourist destination, whether visiting by foot or cruising by luxury yacht. Outdoor activities are plentiful and beach bars, restaurants and cafes line the waterfronts. La Grotta is one of the most beautiful locations to discover by vessel and Roman ruins, the Achilleion Museum, Spianada Square and The Liston will easily fill a day of adventuring on land.

Beautiful Paxos is home to a magnificent collection of beaches, of which Kloni Gouli Beach, Kipiadi Beach, Monodendri Beach and Erimitis Bay Beach are some of the favourites. Tripitos Arch is another stunning coastal feature to visit by superyacht and in town the Pythias Gallery, Paxos Museum and churches will make for an interesting day in town exploring the Ionian Islands' living culture.

In Antipaxos the towns are mostly within the hills, leaving the soft sandy beaches devoid of any development. The Bay of Antipaxos is a popular anchorage and a wonderful serene environment to wake up for breakfast and a cool morning swim.

Lefkada offers an excellent balance between the latest modern conveniences and untouched natural wonders. Moor in one of the fantastic anchorages and spend a relaxing afternoon sunbathing aboard you luxury yacht with the Jacuzzi, BBQ and wet bar at your fingertips, or disappear under the waves with the Seabobs, snorkelling equipment of Scuba diving gear. The dramatic cliffs and coves are just calling to be seen by Jet Ski or kayak, and after the sun sinks over the horizon pull into town for a nightcap or the start to a night of dancing.

East of Lefkada, Meganisi is known for Papanikolis Cave and the winding coastline produces plenty of coves for overnight anchorages and water sports in a sheltered environment.

On Ithaca there is the site of Homer's School, archaeological digs and a slew of stunning isolated beaches where you can unwind in privacy for a candlelit meal at sunset. Spend an afternoon on the pristine white shores of Gedaki Beach.

Myrtos Beach and its cave on Kefalonia is one of its main attractions but far from its only draw, and wine connoisseurs will be in their element with the number of vineyards and tasting sessions on offer.

Couple your fine dining with the amazing seaside restaurants or the exceptional skills of your own on board chef, or catch your dinner in the crystal clear waters as you kayak along the cliffs. When cruising along the Kefalonian coastline be sure to have your cameras ready to capture the ruddy clay cliffs and sands of Xi Beach. The south east corner of the island has a great selection of Scuba dive sites where there is a sponge wall, caves and wrecks to satisfy more experienced divers.

Zakynthos is an island known for its nightlife and there is a fantastic selection of beach bars covering the coast in all directions. For shopping and artwork, ceramic arts are characteristic of the region and some jewellery will make a great present for family or friends back home. The intricate icon walls can be found in Zakynthos churches, among which is the colourful Agios Dionisios Church. Navagio Beach is the site of the famous shipwreck, and if visiting in summer, avoid the tour groups by going early in the morning or later at night. Those looking to delve into the island's history have museums covering byzantine times through to the Second World War.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate:.

The summer months are the best time to visit when the temperature in July and August is an average of 25°C/77°F and rainfall is at its lowest. Spring and autumn are also excellent times to visit, and in winter the temperatures still sit at a cool but comfortable 10°C/50°F for exploring the ruins and visiting the museums.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Smart-casual dress is acceptable through the local towns and villages, while on more conservative and traditional islands long-sleeved clothing is more appropriate. An extra layer is advised in the evenings to keep off the coastal winds.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Marina Lefkas (Lefkada), Nydri Marina (Lefkada), Gouvia Marina (Corfu), Gaios Marina (Paxos), Ithaca Port (Ithaca), Argostoli (Kefalonia)

Famous Restaurants & Clubs:

De Blanck Wine & Champagne Bar (Nidri), Elli's Restaurant (Ithaca), Phevos (Corfu), The Venetian Well (Corfu), Etrusco (Corfu)

A Must See Attraction:

Melissani Cave (Kefalonia), Drogarati Cave (Kefalonia), Casa Parlante (Corfu), Navagio Beach (Zakynthos), Nydri Watrefalls (Nydri), Gedaki Beach (Ithaca)

Best beaches to visit in your yacht:

Myrtos Beach (Kefalonia), La Grotta (Corfu), Halikounas Beach (Corfu), Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach (Zakynthos), Gerakas Beach (Zakynthos), Porto Katsiki Beach (Lefkada)

Local Yacht Events:

Southern Ionian Regatta, Regatta Trophy "800 Martyrs" Erikoussa Otranto, Fiesta Open Regatta

Best time to go:

In July and August the temperatures soar to 31°C/88°F and the sea water is a warm 25°C/77°F. Visitors looking to enjoy the warm weather without the crowds at their peak should visit in June or September, with May and October even quieter on the edge of the shoulder seasons. The latter months will ensure that the beaches, shops and restaurants are relatively quiet, although not all of the landmarks (e.g. religious sites) might be open to visitors.

Corfu is the second largest island in the Ionian group, after Kefalonia, and has plenty to offer its visitors, being one of the rare destinations that caters for all ages and tastes. This beautiful island is full of contrasts, ranging from traditional fishing villages to modern holiday resorts, coupled with an amazing wildlife, lush green hills, towering mountains, clear blue seas, pure white sands, endless olive groves and colourful wild flowers.

The island of Corfu has a cosmopolitan feeling combined with a special traditional character. Apart from some wonderful beaches, Corfu Old Town is the highlight of the island, with its characteristic Venetian style. Corfu can be nicely combined for holidays with other Ionian islands, such as Paxi.

The caves of Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian sea, a fascinating destination, with its infinite variety of the natural surroundings. Sea, mountain, and small, green plains are harmoniously combined together.

Thick forests cloak the rugged limestone landscape while its golden beaches are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. The heavy winter rains make this one of the greenest and lushest of islands. Kefalonia reveals to visitors a glimpse of paradise at every turn, from the traditional village of Fiskardo to the fascinating villages of Livatho. Fiscardo is the most cosmopolitan place with a port that receives many yachts every summer. The capital and main port of Cephalonia since 1757 is Argostoli, built on the inner coast of its peninsula.

Kefalonia is perhaps the only island where one can encounter such fantastic natural phenomena from the caves of Drogarati and Melissani to Katavothres (swallow-holes).

Zakynthos: The flower of the east

Zakynthos is the most southerly of the Ionian islands. Because of its beauty, the Venetians, who ruled the island for many years, nicknamed the island "Flower of the East".

Its landscape varies, as the west is dominated by mountains, while the east features picturesque bays and fantastic beaches. The visitor here will swim in splendid sandy beaches, like the famous Shipwreck beach, one of the best and most photographed in the world.

There is also a unique chance to see endangered wildlife, like the Caretta Caretta turtles or Monk seals, while a visit to the impressive monasteries and churches with fine frescos and icons, may prove unforgettable. Its capital town is amphitheatrically built up to the hill of Bohali and has a quaint old style charm.

The blue flag beaches of Lefkas

Lefkada amazes visitors with the exotic blue colour of its beaches. Called by many "the Carribean of Greece", this island is a very popular summer resort with many things to offer its visitors. Parties for the youths, excellent spots for windsurfers, organized watersports, quiet spots for relaxation, and plenty of sightseeing.

Lefkada is green and mountainous, connected to the mainland by a bridge. The neighbouring islands can be visited by boat, as well as the famous –but private- Scorpio, Onassis' island. Visitors will find both sandy and pebbled beaches, some of them quiet, others more suited to people who want to have fun and party.

On the western coast of the island, its beaches stand out for the wonderful colour and the impressive landscape, particularly Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma.
