BANNENBERG & ROWELL : CONTINUING THE DESIGN TRADITION

Bannenberg & Rowell is the direct descendant of the convention-breaking studio established by Jon Bannenberg – the universally acknowledged father of modern yacht design – in the early 1960s. Dickie Bannenberg and Simon Rowell continue the vision of the founder, and lead the design team in new directions : working with all the major shipyards; designing residences for private clients and real estate developers; collaborating with furniture designers and developing other creative partnerships.

The process of creating a yacht remains a uniquely bespoke and intimate experience. It should be a pleasure from start to finish. Let us work with you to create a new member of the most famous fleet in yachting.

7 British Yacht Design Studios You Need To Know About

Written by Brodie Hayward - Wednesday, December 30, 2020

When it comes to superior yacht design, the UK is a force to be reckoned with. The nation’s maritime history and longstanding design pedigree have given rise to a vibrant and high-calibre industry renowned the world over.

Many stalwarts of the exclusive British yacht design scene have been around for the best part of a century, having masterminded exquisite architecture and interiors for many thousands of vessels during that time. And many newer entrants to the market have proven that innovative thinking can transform how we look at traditional design, too.

Let’s look at 7 of the best British yacht design studios you need to know about.

1.  Winch Design

London-based Winch Design – named after its founder, Andrew Winch – is one of the global yacht design market’s most influential players.

Founded in 1986, the studio employs over 100 people – and over the last 35 years, it has amassed a portfolio of the world’s most exquisite yachts. Winch Design also works across land and sea, with numerous private jets and multi-million-pound properties to its name.

Its notable projects include the 99m Madame Gu, which won Superyacht of the Year 2014 at the World Superyachts Awards in Amsterdam. The team also designed the strikingly beautiful interior of the Cloud 9 ( recently sold and now named Lady Jorgia ) a 74m yacht which features helipad, spa and swimming pool.

2.  Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale is another legend of the yacht design world. Often dubbed the “Rockstar” of the industry, Disdale and his Richmond-upon-Thames studio are behind many of the most famous and celebrated superyachts today.

His 40-year career began in notably humble fashion, as he didn’t receive any formal training in yacht design. Instead, he was tutored by the iconic Jon Bannenberg, whose studio also paved the way for several other leading designers, including Andrew Winch.

Disdale’s more casual style – with his famous mantra of “beach-house not penthouse” – continues to be highly sought-after. This can be seen in the 53.5m Hurricane Run .

3.  Design Unlimited

Founded in 2000, Design Unlimited provides an innovative take on traditional yacht design and has won awards for its fresh approach.

One look at the sailing yacht, Pink Gin VI will tell you all you need to know about the team’s quirky ethos. Design Unlimited’s founder, Mark Tucker, boasts an impressive CV, having cut his teeth at Camper & Nicholson’s Yachts and worked his way up the ranks at Ken Freivokh Design before taking the plunge with his own consultancy.

Custom projects include the 65m Shemara , in which the team completely refitted a 1930s gentleman’s motoryacht. It brought the entire vessel up to modern standards, while retaining her classic charm.

4.  Seymour Diamond

Fiona Diamond’s eponymous studio is called upon by clients the world over to design the interiors of not only superyachts, but also luxury property and aircraft. Diamond worked closely with Terence Disdale for many years before launching her Mayfair-based company in 2010.

Despite being a relative newcomer within the yacht design industry, the business is making a name for itself as the go-to interior specialist of choice. Seymour Diamond prides itself on a hands-on approach and exquisite attention to detail. It recently worked on the 92.5m Royal Romance , which cost upwards of $200 million.

5.  Adam Lay Studio

Founded in 2003 in Stockbridge, Adam Lay Studio is a boutique design house that has won countless awards for its iconic projects.

Mentored by John Munford for seven years, another noted custom superyacht designer, Lay has built a reputation for discretion. He also prides himself on truly getting under the skin of client briefs, to not only deliver what owners are looking for – but to exceed their expectations.

The studio’s projects include the Lady Kathryn V , an ornately styled superyacht that evokes the classic and timeless elegance of years gone by.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adam Lay Studio (@adamlaystudio)

6.  Bannenberg & Rowell Design

The name Bannenberg holds a lot of sway in the world of superyacht design. Jon Bannenberg is considered the Grandfather of the modern industry, having pioneered an entirely new aesthetic in the 1960s which is still adhered to today.

And it’s clear the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Bannenberg & Rowell, now arguably one of – if not the – most famous yacht design studios in the world, was set up by the late Jon’s son, Dickie and his business partner, Simon Rowell. Despite being a company steeped in history, the team remains at the forefront of cutting-edge creativity, working with each client to create something that perfectly matches their style.

Notable projects include the award-winning 65m Galactica Star, a £50 million superyacht which was chartered by Beyoncé and Jay-Z for a holiday in 2015.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bannenberg & Rowell (@bannenberg_and_rowell_designs)

7.  Gresham Yacht Design

Founded by Bahamas-born Steve Gresham, the Gresham Yacht Design studio is now based a little closer to home, in Hampshire.

Having originally worked as part of the engineering team at Williams Formula 1, Gresham moved into superyacht design and launched his studio in 2013. Utilising his keen eye for detail, alongside a desire to continually innovate, Gresham’s work is renowned for its technical excellence. The studio often collaborates with Seymour Diamond, with the former leading on yacht design and the latter handling the interior fit-out and finishing touches.

Gresham’s most famous work includes the MV Alucia, a luxury, 56m research and exploration yacht that played a key role in filming footage for BBC’s Blue Planet II.

Superyacht designers at the Superyacht Design Symposium 2015

The legends.

It’s a fact often lamented in the superyacht industry: the designers of these spectacular craft don’t get their due. It falls to _Boat Internationa_l, therefore, to lionise these hardy few, who share a patience unrivalled in the world of design. We gathered the top 50 designers for a photo shoot at the Superyacht Design Symposium  2015 to celebrate those who are at the pinnacle of the industry.

Tim Heywood Tim Heywood Design

The most charming man in yachting, yacht designer Tim Heywood is a true A-lister. He started his career with Jon Bannenberg before branching out on his own in 1996. His prolific output includes the hugely successful Limited Editions series with Amels and Feadship projects such as 808, now named Symphony , at 101m the yard’s biggest boat. My favourite design… “That’s like asking which my favourite child is!”

Remi tessier Rémi Tessier Design

When this French former cabinetmaker walks into a room, people nudge each other and whisper: “That’s Rémi Tessier!” Arguably the outstanding interior designer of his day, he’s self-taught when it comes to yachts and defines himself as a craftsman of luxury. My favourite design… “Every single project is special to me, I love them all!”

Espen Øino Espen Øino International

Øino’s Monaco-based studio is taking over the world. With projects in build in six countries and a recent output comprising the 140m Ocean Victory , 95.2m Kismet , 89m Infinity and the 77m Silverfast , Øino is at full throttle. My favourite design… “The latest on the drawing board! But I am very fond of Skat and the Silver series”

Terence Disdale Terence Disdale Design

Another superyacht designer who started his career under Jon Bannenberg, yacht designer Terence Disdale opened his own firm in 1973 so he could spend more time fishing and less time at a desk. It didn’t quite work out, as hit followed hit for the London studio. It soon became one of the industry’s leading lights, to the point where it has more interior designs in the world’s top 101 superyachts than anyone else. My favourite design… “The 162.5m Eclipse ”

Andrew Winch Andrew Winch Designs

Yacht designer Andrew Winch is one of the few superyacht designers to have successfully moved into more mainstream territories, including jets and architecture. But his boating output hasn’t suffered – quite the opposite, with recent launches such as the 91.5m Equanimity and 99m Madame Gu reinforcing this studio's pedigree. My favourite design… “Truthfully it is every single one of them”

The sailing greats

Ed Dubois Dubois Yachts

Names don’t come much bigger. The 63-year-old yacht designer Ed Dubois has had hit after hit: Escapade , Como (renamed Lady May ), Mondango 3 , Zefira . But we’re really excited about his 58m performance sloop at Royal Huisman. Sailing icon… The 1973 Derecktor Salty Goose

Bill tripp _Tripp Desig_n

The only American in our line-up launched his company in 1984 – and never looked back. Tripp, 60, is the son of a designer and grew up “tinkering on a boat”. His biggest project to date, an 85m in the final stages of completion at Oceanco, is set to break cover soon. Sailing icon… The 49m Herreshoff Westward

Andre Hoek Hoek Design Naval Architects

No one does elegance quite like Hoek, who founded his company in 1986. With sleek J Class yachts and timeless sloops, the Dutchman, 60, has cornered the “gentleman’s yacht” market. Sailing icon… The J Class Endeavour . Own the iconic Endeavour , currently for sale asking €19,950,000

Mario Pedol Nauta Yachts

Pedol’s name was all over the wires in 2013 when the world first caught a glimpse of Azzam , the biggest superyacht yet constructed . The Italian designer, 60, penned the exterior of the 180m Lürssen , but it’s his Milanese studio’s prolific output of custom and production sailing yachts that makes him a great. Sailing icon… The 42m Herreshoff Mariette of 1915

Ken Freivokh Ken Freivokh Design

Creative director Rowell, 46, designed the interiors on 85m Lürssen Pacific and 65m Heesen Galactica Star . On British yacht design… “Jon Bannenberg was an Australian who found London to be creative and receptive in the 1960s. So maybe it is the environment as much as the natives”

Jonathan Rhoades Rhoades Young Design

Rhoades, 42, started in architecture before turning to the sea at Ken Freivokh Design. Projects include the interior of 48m Royal Huisman sailing yacht Wisp . On British yacht design… “Perhaps it is the intoxicating history of science, craft, music, art and general irreverence in Britain that creates such a healthy environment in which to design”

Blue yachting philosophy: inspired by nature, created by rossinavi.

Microscopic phytoplankton serve as the inspiration for Italian yacht builder Rossinavi's newest ... [+] designs under their BluE philosophy. Like this phytoplankton, the recently launched Seawolf X, the Project Infinity 42, and the Concept Oneiric are all designed to convert energy from the sun to use to power operations.

What do a 43-meter hybrid-electric catamaran, a 42-meter monohull superyacht, and a futuristic catamaran have in common with phytoplankton? Italian yacht builder Rossinavi can explain it in the simplest of terms: energy conversion.

Phytoplankton are single-celled photosynthetic microorganisms that live in water. Using chloroplasts containing chlorophyll, the cells collect the energy in sunlight, converting it into chemical energy and storing it to power cell function as needed.

Rossinavi’s sharp new AI hybrid-electric catamaran Seawolf X, the AI hybrid-electric monohull superyacht Project Infinity 42, and the AI concept catamaran Oneiric also convert sunlight to energy. Uniquely crafted solar panels collect the sun's energy, converting it into electrical energy to be stored in battery banks to power the yachts as needed.

Why It Matters

Both phytoplankton and AI hybrid-electric yachts have an important place in promoting a healthy marine environment. One supplies about half of the earth's oxygen and provides a basic ocean food web for aquatic populations while also recycling important ocean nutrients. A big job for tiny organisms.

The other supplies a more sustainable way for people to explore nature's oceans. Mindful that the oceans are sensitive to oceanic contaminants delivered via conventional yachting emissions, along with many other things, Rossinavi is taking a proactive approach.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

Godzilla minus one is coming to netflix this weekend but there s a catch, what to watch this weekend new streaming shows and movies on netflix hulu prime video and more.

Rossinavi's recently launched Seawolf X belongs to the elite group of the Italian yachtbuilder's ... [+] BluE yacht collection. The 42.8-meter supercat has integrated panels for solar collection with Artificial Intelligence advising crew in ways to adjust operations for maximum performance and seamless guest comfort using minimal energy.

Using AI technology in tandem with solar panels and battery banks to reduce impacts to the flora and fauna of the ocean, Seawolf X can run day trips in full electric mode. This cat can also run multi-day excursions at 90 percent and transatlantic trips at 80 percent in electric mode. When docked or moored in hibernation mode, reduced energy consumption monitored by AI allows the yacht to return energy to the quay or property. It can power a villa if needed. A big job for a catamaran.

Project Infinity is also equipped with an AI system that monitors operations to assist crew in choosing more sustainable operations via integrated solar panels and a substantial battery pack. The superyacht can run 90 percent of day trips on full electric mode and 70 percent in full electric mode for transatlantic trips. A lightweight eco-displacement hull contributes to efficiency.

Rossinavi's Concept Oneiric stands as a beacon in sustainable yacht design, employing groundbreaking naval and interior architecture by Zaha Hadid Architects and top-of-industry technology. A yacht from the future, Oneiric is a unique sustainability standout with many creature comforts.

Seawolf X By The Numbers

Even from an overhead view, Seawolf X sets itself apart from the rest. Here showing off the ... [+] lightweight, durable, highly efficient solar panels and the bow deck which is convertible to a cinema, Seawolf X offers efficiency with AI management of systems, in tandem with sustainability from the solar energy converted to power the yacht.

The Rossinavi BluE label catamaran Seawolf X joins the elite fleet from the Italian shipbuilder's newest models created with an emphatic sustainability philosophy. Seawolf X measures 42.8 meters, stem to stern, and 13.8 meters across the beam with a draft of 1.85 meters.

Seawolf X sports a futuristic exterior with sweeping curves flowing to crisp edges, echoing lines of chic supercars. "We set out to envision the boat of the future, unbound by convention yet grounded in feasibility with cutting-edge technology for minimal environmental impact." said Fulvio De Simoni, Founder of Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design.

Seawolf X, a product of Rossinavi's BluE collection of yachts inspired by phytoplankton, cuts a ... [+] profile unlike any other.

The aluminum hull and exterior architecture is the result of work from Italian hands at Fulvio de Simoni Yacht Design . The New York firm of Meyer Davis Studio delivered the interiors.

With a sociable cockpit centered around a pool, an expansive sun deck, and a bow area that transforms to a cinema, outdoor spaces are generous, comfortable, and spacious. Four cabins of equal proportion are outfitted in thoughtfully selected sustainable materials using neutral tones, mimicking nature's most soothing elements.

Two diesel batteries can quickly recharge. The yacht is able to fully recharge via shore power in five hours.

Infinity 42 By The Numbers

Designed for sustainability and high performance, Infinity 42's monocrystalline silicon cells, seven times lighter than traditional glass panels, will record the highest power to weight ratio in the current world market. Highly productive in low sunlight and at minimum angles of incidence, these flexible cells will lend themselves to pleasing, curved design aesthetics.

Four lower deck cabins and one main level cabin are spacious and bright. Placement of the wheelhouse between the main deck and sundeck facilitates a low, streamlined, aerodynamic profile.

For these and many other reasons, Infinity 42 earns a triple zero: No emissions, no noise, no odors. Owners can thus enjoy the sea while respecting it.

Concept Yacht Oneiric

The Oneiric catamaran concept, developed in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects, is the new Rossinavi sustainable technology flagship. The aluminum yacht concept measures 44 meters in length and 13.75 meters across the beam with a draft of 2 meters. Interior design accommodates 8-10 guests in 4-5 cabins served by 6-7 crew.

Interiors are light and spacious, using lightweight recycled and recyclable materials, optimizing performance and energy use. Fluid, organic lines common to Zaha Hadid Architectural style employ biomimicry at its best, borrowing palettes, textures, and patterns from nature's proven designs.

Fully electric navigation via three levels of solar collection make the most of solar technology. AI manages operations at the control center, advising crew in delivering optimal efficiency across all systems for the lowest environmental impact, energy consumption, and guest comfort.

Rossinavi's BluE Line

Rossinavi says it is working to revamp the image and the practices of traditional recreational yachting, focusing on ethics and environment. With sustainability as the guiding principle, Rossinavi created the BluE line, optimizing performance while minimizing emissions and maintaining a high level of guest comfort.

Designing yachts that respect the oceans, Rossinavi is working to connect with those seeking intense and exciting voyages while respecting the sea and reinforcing mankind's connection to it.
