Captain Josh Claassen Captain Josh grew up in California. His first stint as a professional mariner was aboard a gaff rigged top-sail ketch that sailed up and down the coast. His duties included being a topman, a bowman a coxswain and a maritime educator to both school children and adults. After his adventures before the mast he moved to Florida and has been working aboard private and charter yachts for the past 17 years. In his maritime career he has earned his Coast Guard Captains Ticket and has travelled to many beautiful places. He has had the pleasure of working on many amazing vessels and meeting many truly great people. He looks forward in welcoming you aboard Motor Yacht Carbon Copy for an enjoyable and memorable time! Michael Knab - Mate Hailing from Long Island’s east end, Michael Knab brings us his life experience of growing up on the water. As a child he was raised sailing, snorkeling, and fishing, in his home town of Sag Harbor. As a youth Michael was trained to be an ocean lifeguard in the summers while also participating in his high school swimming and sailing teams in the during school seasons. He continued to nurture his passion for the water, eventually working for local surf and fishing camps and yacht clubs. He is excited to share his love for the water and explore new locations with guests. Mel Cortez - Stewardess Having spent childhood summers on the beaches of Southern California, Mel’s love for the ocean has recently driven her career choices. Four years ago, she moved to land locked Vermont to work as a nanny. Although she enjoyed her life in Vermont, she yearned to be back on the water. Before moving to Florida, Mel worked as a deckhand for a small ship cruising company on the Mississippi River. She enjoys making people smile, dancing, and traveling. Chef Bryan Matthews Chef Bryan grew up in Hackettstown, New Jersey and started his yachting career after spending four years in the United States Navy. Working his way from Deckhand to Mate he eventually realized his goal of becoming a Captain and now holds a 200ton US Coast Guard license. His lifelong passion for cooking was cultivated further by watching and assisting, where he could, the many yacht Chefs he has worked with. His career in the Culinary Arts was fostered at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in their Bachelors program. Chef Bryan began working as a line cook at L’Hermitage and The Chefs Palate. Moving up the kitchen ranks it was a natural transition to cook on private yachts where his passions for cooking and life at sea could unite. Bryan has cooked on yachts on the Eastern Seaboard, the Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska. His passion for what he does shows in his dishes and meals served to guests.

As a child he was raised sailing, snorkeling, and fishing, in his home town of Sag Harbor. As a youth Michael was trained to be an ocean lifeguard in the summers while also participating in his high school swimming and sailing teams in the during school seasons. He continued to nurture his passion for the water, eventually working for local surf and fishing camps and yacht clubs. He is excited to share his love for the water and explore new locations with guests. <br /> <br /> Mel Cortez - Stewardess<br /> Having spent childhood summers on the beaches of Southern California, Mel’s love for the ocean has recently driven her career choices. Four years ago, she moved to land locked Vermont to work as a nanny. Although she enjoyed her life in Vermont, she yearned to be back on the water. Before moving to Florida, Mel worked as a deckhand for a small ship cruising company on the Mississippi River. She enjoys making people smile, dancing, and traveling. <br /> <br /> Chef Bryan Matthews<br /> Chef Bryan grew up in Hackettstown, New Jersey and started his yachting career after spending four years in the United States Navy. Working his way from Deckhand to Mate he eventually realized his goal of becoming a Captain and now holds a 200ton US Coast Guard license. His lifelong passion for cooking was cultivated further by watching and assisting, where he could, the many yacht Chefs he has worked with. His career in the Culinary Arts was fostered at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in their Bachelors program. Chef Bryan began working as a line cook at L’Hermitage and The Chefs Palate. Moving up the kitchen ranks it was a natural transition to cook on private yachts where his passions for cooking and life at sea could unite. Bryan has cooked on yachts on the Eastern Seaboard, the Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. She is a spacious and well thought out raised pilothouse motor yacht with country kitchen layout, offering accommodation for up to 8 persons in 2 double and 2 twin cabins. All cabins have their own en suite and usual audio and visual systems. There are always at least 3 attentive yacht crew members on board of this well maintained yacht. Thanks to her twin CAT C32 super yacht engines, providing up to 1700hp each, she can cruise at speeds of up to around 18kn while consuming around 350l/h of fuel per hour. During best sea and wind conditions, maximum speeds of up to 22kn can be reached. She features an elegant neutral interior décor, plush furnishings and soft lighting. The main salon offers a generous lounge with sofa, occasional chairs, coffee tables, wet bar and full entertainment systems. Forward of the salon in an open plan, is the formal dining table. A foyer to starboard passes steps to the upper bridge deck, and onto a full beam country style galley, offering an additional more casual dining space.

Below decks, this luxury yacht provides elegant and comfortable accommodation to up to 8 charter guests in 4 well-appointed staterooms, including a full beam master suite and completely private VIP suite forward.

CARBON COPY Specifications

Exterior living aboard the Hargrave yacht is spacious. The aft deck is adjacent to the main salon boasting a shaded alfresco dining table and plenty of seating, perfect for socialising and relaxing. An extended swim platform on the transom ensures effortless water access to the good array of sea toys on offer. With 360° wraps around main decks, guests can walk forward safely while at anchor or under way, to make the most of the intimate forward seating area. On the upper deck, features both sun and shaded areas, a deluxe Jacuzzi tub with attached marble wet bar, ample seating and fully equipped wet bar and service area. Further aft, teak chairs and a cocktail table are the ideal places to sit back and soak up the sun in style.

She is run by dependable CAT C-32 1700hp diesel engines, reaching a top speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

CARBON COPY can easily sleep eight guests in total, looked after by a professional crew of 5. She offers four lovely staterooms, including a full beam master suite and completely private VIP suite forward. The master suite is amidships, providing a centre lined king size bed and his and hers toilets. The VIP cabin is forward, with a centre lined queen size bed. A further two guest cabins consist of one double and one twin cabin, each with private en-suite facilities.

Carbon neutral yacht ownership

Dave mallach, founder of the fog warning, wants to influence the entire industry….

The Fog Warning is a yacht dealership which offers carbon-neutral yacht use for owners for as long as they have their yachts. The initiative is zero-cost to the owner and is paid out of a sense of gratitude and responsibility by the dealership.

“I began to feel a little responsible, let's say a little guilty for the carbon that I had facilitated throughout my career and placed into the environment,” explains Dave Mallach, founder of The Fog Warning. The former social worker and director of drug treatment programmes on Rikers Island highlighted some of the similarities in his current and former careers, “At the end of the day, it’s helping people achieve their dreams, whether that’s sobriety or a yacht.”

The Fog Warning is based in Westhampton New York and acts as an exclusive US yacht dealer for Hollands Long Island Yachts as well as Hartman Yachts. Mallach drew inspiration for the initiative from the aviation industry, “I had noticed in the last three or four years, particularly on the builder side, a recognition of their own effect on their carbon footprint and the impact they're having on global warming. For builders, it's more about sustainable practises and sustainable materials. And, with every passing quarter, I notice more builders either doing the right thing or talking about doing the right thing, which is great. However, I have not seen enough people talk about it from the retail side or client side of the industry.”

The mechanics of the process are very simple. Mallach simply asks for a copy of his client’s fuel receipts at the end of each season, calculates the amount of carbon that the yacht has put into the atmosphere and purchases carbon credits from blue carbon organisations. “We have yachts to enjoy, right?” Mallach suggests that,

“If we're going to feel weighed down by the consequences of what we're doing to the environment, that's not recreational, that's not enjoyment.”

While carbon offsetting provides a hassle-free and relatively affordable solution to relieving the environmental guilt of yacht ownership, more still needs to be done by owners, builders and brokers to ensure that the industry has a lesser overall impact on the environment. Stricter regulations in yachting hotspots as well as tackling some of the less-spoken about aspects such as anti-foul, black water and noise pollution must also be tackled with similar conviction. With that being said, if one yacht broker in New York can put profit aside and set an example for ethical business practices, then perhaps some more of the key industry stakeholders can follow suit.

Robert Van Tol, Executive director of Water Revolution Foundation, is actually campaigning against connecting negative impact to monetary value. In a statement to SuperyachtNews, Van Tol argued that, “If it helps to raise the urgency and awareness by translating negative impact in a financial value, fine. But the subsequent action is paramount. Paying that amount to (often) plant trees somewhere is better than nothing, honestly. But the idea that the amount is indeed compensating the real impact is simply not true, nor is there monitoring of the expected compensations over time.”

Van Tol argues that offsetting gives no incentive for change, and drives no change in itself. He believes that a smarter investment for an owner would be to compensate the amount of negative impact calculated and to add it to the project budget to invest in smarter technology which reduces the negative impact of the yacht.

Although Mallach, is a strong believer in the positive impact of carbon off setting. He believes the journey to a greener future is achievable first and foremost through marketing and awareness. In recent years, the thin veil of greenwashing has become transparent to the eyes of most clients and stakeholders, with many calling for more realistic and conceptual solutions to fight the climate crisis. Carbon offsetting is engrained into a number of industries, why not yachting?

Despite Van Tol’s premonitions with carbon offsetting, he admires the efforts of Mallach who is facilitating the move for many yacht owners to take their first steps in the right direction. “We thank this industry and our collective success so far to the oceans, and our collective future depends on them.” Van Tol explains stated,

“I’d like to emphasize that it is a myth to think that ocean conservation will forbid yachts or prevent yachts from operating somewhere. It is about sustainable ocean management and use, aligning the needs of humans with that of nature.”

Mallach places great importance on ending his interviews with a key phrase, which in many ways is a testament to his virtue, “I am so happy, pleased and proud to be the first in the industry to offer my clients carbon-neutral yacht ownership. But nothing, would make me happier than knowing I'm not the last.”
