What kind of sailboat is a Sonar , and what are the features of this boat?

Sonars are a triple handed keelboat raced by both adaptive and able bodied sailors. The Sonar is used by sailors who enjoy a team mentality, who are often interested in racing in addition to cruising. The Sonar has a mileu of possible adaptions. Several are described below.

The video below shows both a transfer bench and an swiveling adapted Sonar seat (although the sound quality is poor),

The Sip and Puff joystick steering system is an option that helps individuals with limited mobility steer the Sonar. Find information on what a Sip and Puff system is, and where to purchase one.

Other adaptions include Stability bars and drop in seats are also used in tandem in the Sonar to help crew and skipper move from side to side as the boat sails.

Sonars also have different seating options, including:

  • Mid-Boat Seat : This seat is installed towards the center of the Sonar and is designed to accomodate individuals using Sip and Puff systems. The seat can be positioned from side to side using cleats.
  • Gimbaled Mid-Boat Seat : The gimbaled seat sits lower in the boat and swivels to keep the Skipper upright as the boat heels.
  • For general information, and to purchase a Sonar, visit Rondar Raceboats .
  • Other possible adaptions include changing the main sheet purchase and the location of the mainsheet block. Purchase adjustments are covered on page 50 of US Sailing's Adaptive Sailing Resource Manual .

Learn to sail on a Sonar or rent a boat to enjoy the water!

The Sonar is a 7 m (23 ft) one-design keelboat for up to five people. It is Bermuda-rigged , with a large mainsail and a 100% jib . The class is recognized by the International Sailing Federation .

The Sonar was designed in 1979 by Bruce Kirby , designer of the popular Laser dinghy. Since then, over 800 boats have been built. Most of the fleet is in the USA, with smaller fleets in Britain and Canada.

Did you know?

The Sonar showcased disabled sailing at the 1996 Paralympic Games where the sport was a demonstration event with just the Sonar. She has been the three person keelboat at every subsequent Paralympics . The Sonar is well suited for disabled sailing because of its large open cockpit making adaptations easy.

I'm interested in the sonar 23. Anyone own one of these? I'd love to know about its construction, performance, etc. Cheers

sonar sailboat length

I don't own one, but have sailed on one many times. Good little boats, and a lot of fun. You can read more about them here and here .

Thanks for the info. I'd like to know more about the boat's construction materials and techniques if anyone can help there.

sonar sailboat length

There's one at our club. If I see the guy, I'll tell him about this thread.

Hull Hand laid up woven fiberglass with coremat coring for added strength and impact resistance. Each boat carefully crafted to meet one-design rules. White gelcoat standard; custom hull gelcoat colors and bottom paint optional. Deck Fabricated as one-piece insert; includes three seat storage lockers. Two bunks (and space for a small Porta Potti) in lockable cuddy cabin with hatchboard. Extruded aluminum toerail bolted thru deck and hull flange. Cockpit Huge 11'6" self-bailing cockpit with full-length seats, angled seatbacks. Seats 8 adults in comfort. Adjustable mainsheet traveler amidships. Keel 900 pounds of cast lead, deep fin design. Narrow, with advanced foil shape for superior windward performance. Optional sling available for hoist launching. Rudder 2" thick, very high-aspect and deep. Balanced design and large area provides excellent control and manueverability, even under spinnaker in strong winds. Inboard hung for protection and to retain the same light feel at all angles of heel. Laminated curved tiller. Rigging Bendy tapered aluminum mast. 75% fractional rig is responsive, makes sailhandling easier. Elliptical mast section is keel stepped. Swept spreaders, adjustable backstay and moveable mast blocking at the partners permit fine tuning. Running rigging is Dacron and Spectra, cut to length and fitted for each application. Sails Large Dacron mainsail and 100% jib, legal for class racing. Combination of larger main and smaller jib is easier to handle when tacking. Standard cunningham, outhaul, traveler controls and jib leads provide complete sail-shaping ability. Spinnaker and tapered aluminum pole available. Hardware Boat is shipped "race ready," equipped with top-quality marine hardware -- Harken, Ronstan, etc. Deck and cockpit fittings are mounted with stainless steel hardware. Click to expand...

I really love these boats. (I also really like the J-22 equally). One word of caution, at least on the early boats that I sailed, I think that the cockpit was not truely self-bailing. My recollection was that the cockpit has an Elstrom type bailer that had to be opened to drain the cockpit only when the boat was at speed. This means using a boom tent and bailing the cockpit something of a necessity if they are stored in the water. Jeff

Sonar Hey AK, The Sonar is the second best keelboat trainer out there. Colgate 26 being the best. We have used Sonars exclusively in our operation since 1997 to train >800 sailors. It is a day sailor racer and nothing more. Pros; very simple rig at the basic level, huge comfortable cockpit, most manueverable, they love wind and are fast. Very easy to learn at the beginner level. Cons; designed to be dry sailed, wet boat in chop/wind due to low freeboard, water ingress at the partners is annoying, Elvstrom bailers need maintenance requiring haul, zero amenities (guys are ok with this...) Want to know more send me a note and I will be glad to help. I have sailed these for the last 10 years so I have a fair idea what kind of boat they are. BTW they are back in production both in NA and Europe. Regards, Red

1978 Sonar Restoration by Shumway Marine

1978 Sonar Sailboat

1978 Sonar Sailboat – Awaiting Restoration

Late last fall we sold a 1978 Sonar to Skip Shumway of  Shumway Marine . The boat was in pretty tough shape. The blue gel coat had faded to a chalky hue. The black anodized mast had rubbed through to the bare aluminum. The rudder and keel were both a mess in each their own unique way, and the interior was pretty much shot.

We were certain that for the right buyer, though, we had a diamond in the rough. The Sonar is a great daysailer and racer, and we are glad to announce that this one is back!

Take a look at the after picture!

As the Shumway crew puts on the finishing touches, this boat is actively for sale. Interested ? Contact Shumway Marine through their contact page .

Origin of the Sonar:

“The Sonar may well be the best boat I’ve ever designed.” – Bruce Kirby

It started when Bruce Kirby’s home club (Noroton Yacht Club, Darien, CT USA) couldn’t find the right boat to get their members involved in club racing; fewer and fewer of its members were participating.

They studied a great many existing classes of boats but all were considered too expensive, too slow, too demanding to sail, or just plain uncomfortable. So Bruce was asked to design a new boat specifically to meet the requirements of a club racing one-design keelboat fleet.

The result was the Sonar. The Noroton Yacht Club got every thing they wanted and more. And the Sonar has been greeted with enthusiasm by individuals and clubs all over the world.

When the Sonar was designed and orders were taken for the first fleet of boats at Noroton Yacht Club, in Darien, Connecticut, the original fleet members recognized a need to create an organization with a Constitution, By-laws and Class Rules that control the growth of the class. Early membership was just a few key people, but these people had a passion for this new and very special boat and their passion spread as new fleets sprang up around North America. Early membership grew at a rapid pace as boats were built. Sonars worldwide now number over 700 with fleets in over six countries.

The Sonar was selected as the three-person Paralympic keelboat beginning in 2000.

Membership in the organization is open to all who own or love to sail on Sonars. Becoming a member is easy, just go to the Membership page of this website where you will find all the information you will need and an online registration form.

  • Description

Seller's Description

Hull #328. I refurbished this Sonar for two years and it has been in storage since. Time for someone else to take up the cause. The hull has been stripped, barrier coated (5 coats) and finished with VC 17. This is a solid Sonar. No soft spots in the hull or deck. The keel box is solid. I dropped and sealed the keel. The rudder post has been reworked and has no wobble. The following items are new: jib and main halyards, main sail, cockpit handholds, LED cabin and bow nav light, Signet knot meter.bailer gaskets Roller furling jib with two spinnakers (one race and one cruise w sock) spinnaker pole The trailer has been sanded, primed and painted. It has no lights on it. the trailer is road worthy

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Commissioned by members of Noroton YC of Darien CT USA and first built by Seidelmann Yachts. A few were also built by Carbon Index in the UK. Current builder (2019) is Rondar Raceboats.

Rigging diagram.

Use the diagram below to reference Harken part numbers to appropriate application on your Sonar sailboat. Parts recommendations are offered as a guide for common applications.

Jib Halyard Fine-Tune

This high-power jib halyard fine-tune allows you to tension the luff as the wind cranks up. When you need headstay sag to power up the jib in chop and light air, the fine-tune allows quick control over headstay tension, making it easier to insert mast chocks.

Mainsheet Bridle

Upgrading to a bridle can make your system self-tacking in 10-20 knots and downwind while reducing the adjustments needed in other wind ranges. Simply add a second low-friction Harken 2731 car and use Spectra® strops about 28 inches long. The length of the bridle straps is key so you can sheet in hard to center the boom without closing off the leach.

Jib Sheet Coarse/Fine-Tune

This hand-trimmed 6:1 system has a gross-trim for speed in quick tacks and a fine-tune for precise, fingertip control in any breeze.

Diagram provided by Harken. West Coast Sailing is an approved seller of Harken sailboat hardware.

The Sonar was designed by Bruce Kirby, whose other work includes the popular Laser dinghy. Major League Fishing Announces Sonar Limits

  • September 13, 2024

Bow-mounted screen

Major League Fishing announced Friday updates to its 2025 rules that will allow tournament anglers to utilize the fish-catching power of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar technology while preserving traditional fishing techniques enjoyed by millions of anglers and fans.

Starting in 2025, all boats, across all MLF circuits, will be limited to two forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers in any combination. Additionally, no bow-mounted screen may extend vertically more than 18 inches off the surface of the front deck at its highest point when the boat is on plane, and no screen mounted at the console may extend vertically more than 16 inches off the top of the steering column where it protrudes from the console.

Pros competing on the 2025 Bass Pro Tour will be allowed to use forward-facing and 360-degree sonar for only one of three periods each day. Anglers will declare their use of the technologies before the start of the period of their choice, and fans watching on MLFNOW! will see an indicator on SCORETRACKER® next to each angler’s name showing who is actively using the technologies, has used them or still has them available. This rule applies to all seven regular-season Bass Pro Tour stages and REDCREST 2025. There will be no restrictions in the General Tire Heavy Hitters or General Tire Team Series, where anglers compete out of similarly equipped, league-provided boats that level the playing field. Use of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar will be permitted during practice.

the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals, qualifying days will be evenly split with forward-facing and 360-degree sonar allowed on Day 1 and prohibited on Day 2. Anglers who advance to the Championship Round will be allowed to use the technologies on Day 3. Forward-facing and 360-degree transducers must be covered with a high-visibility cap provided by MLF that prohibits sonar transmission during times when use is not allowed. No restrictions will apply to practice.

Toyota Series, Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) and Abu Garcia College Fishing anglers will be allowed to use forward-facing and 360-degree sonar during practice and all competition days.

In order to create a more level playing field for up-and-coming student anglers and reinforce the learning of traditional bass-fishing techniques, use of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar will not be allowed in Abu Garcia High School Fishing competition. Its use will not, however, be restricted during practice.

“Forward-facing sonar is the most effective bass-fishing technology that I’ve seen introduced in my lifetime,” said Boyd Duckett, President and CEO of Major League Fishing. “It’s a powerful tool that provides an opportunity to access and catch fish that we’ve never been able to efficiently target before. However, its effectiveness is leading to a more uniform approach in tournaments. For the sport to remain engaging to fans, participants or sponsors, it’s important that anglers can still compete using a diverse range of techniques.”

MLF research shows that television and livestream viewers prefer watching tournaments where a variety of techniques are in play. Additionally, surveys of Tackle Warehouse Invitationals, Toyota Series and Phoenix Bass Fishing League anglers, both those who fished in 2024 and those who fished in 2023 but did not fish in 2024, show that a substantial majority, across all levels and divisions, support limiting screen size and transducers to rein in the technology. Anglers were evenly split, however, when asked if the technology should be banned or allowed to continue unrestricted. A slight majority of boaters preferred unrestricted use while co-anglers preferred an outright ban.

“We have numerous audiences that we’re trying to please, and while we realize that not everyone is going to agree with our rule changes, we believe the solutions we have created will satisfy the majority of our stakeholders,” Duckett said. “We did our due diligence from analyzing viewership trends and consulting with sponsors to surveying our anglers, who account for the sport’s largest participation base, and we believe we’ve reached the best possible solution to a polarizing issue – a compromise that merges this powerful technology with traditional bass fishing. Going forward, it will add to our game, not materially change it.”

MLF is uniquely situated to govern intra-day usage of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar at the sport’s highest level with its period structure and an official in every Bass Pro Tour boat. The league is also positioned to enforce day-by-day usage at the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals through POV cameras and a new, easy to install transducer cover under development that will temporarily prohibit sonar transmission. Covers will be provided to participating anglers at no charge.

“We’re setting a path, just like every other professional sports league, that allows us to manage and appropriately incorporate technological advancements as they’re created,” Duckett said. “We want to ensure that our sport remains multi-dimensional so that we can continue delivering the best possible product for our fans, anglers and sponsors.”
