AI makes it all up

I have used Google Translate for many years and some of the recent changes have frustrated me immensely. I use this primarily for Chinese language and often use the camera feature. Lately, it seems the app will not faithfully transcribe what is displayed, but will change the characters displayed. I can’t trust that the AI hasn’t decided to substitute what is displayed with something different and perhaps has changed the meaning, by even a slight, but significant amount. A faithful transcription will allow me to puzzle out what the meaning may by allowing me to review the characters displayed, not the characters that have been substituted. Also, with the same feature, I used to be able to view the characters in the photo and choose which characters to translate, but now, I can only choose the translated segments. If there is a way to view an untranslated version, other than sending it to the home page (with the already unreliable transcription of what is displayed), I haven’t figured it out.

Accessibility for Instructional Design

Google Translate is now a form of augmented reality and is adapted for educational purposes. This application provides users with tools to translate between languages and they now include an image option; users take a photograph of a sign, piece of paper, or other form of written text and receive a translation in the language of their choice. This augmented reality is ground breaking because this allows online learners to access content in other languages. The application also translates spoken word in real time, which allows all learners to access audio in written form, in their own language, online or in-person. This version of augmented reality that is adapted for education can be utilized in an online learning environment and can be utilized by instructional designers. One of the major challenges with instructional design is selecting the correct tools to build learning experiences. With this application, instructional designers are able to create a course in their own language and can make their lesson accessible to learners by recommending Google Translate for accessibility. I plan to utilize this in conjunction with my online lessons and videos in order to reach more students with diverse abilities and primary languages.

Horrible Application Given the Size of the Company

The Google translate app is a joke. There are very few apps that can lead someone to yell expletives while sitting in their kitchen trying to enjoy a cup of tea. Editing something you’ve written on the Google Translate App is a pitiful process filled with tapping the screen of your phone over and over attempting to unselect individual words or sentences. Sometimes it selects the entirety of what you’ve written and won’t allow you to unselect it without a fight. It’s unconscionable that the process for editing what you’ve written doesn’t follow every other smart phone format. Not only that, when you’ve finished writing of considerable length, in my case an email, and would like to highlight, copy and paste it, you will quickly realize you cannot highlight and scroll at the same time like you can on any other apple app that includes type. Instead, you’re forced to go through a ridiculous process of highlighting as much as you can see, pasting it, returning to the app, copying more and then pasting that. I repeated that process six time before I had copied my email over to gmail. If I had more time I would go into detail about the “define” tool that pops up unprovoked and further adds to the absolute farce that is the UX of this application. For a company like Google to have produced such a dysfunctional infuriating UI is truly shameful.

For some reason, on the extension when clicking "Translate This Page" on the top right for Chinese text on a youtube video, it won't translate the title, description or comments on the page... Then I tried reinstalling, still no avail... Then I tried clicking "Show Original" and also clicked "Translate to: English" and reselected "English"... Then it worked... Before I didn't have to jump through all these steps to get the youtube page to translate... Also, tried this with Japanese and Korean... Show more

Inside the 'Fly Fleet': billionaire Google founder Sergey Brin's growing flotilla of megayachts, boats, and jet skis

In a quiet harbor in California's Redwood City, 30 miles south of San Francisco, there often sits a gleaming 40-meter yacht flying the flag of the Marshall Islands.

The sleek, silver-and-white vessel sits among a smattering of other high-end cruisers, but this boat is a bit different: Butterfly, as the yacht is known, is owned by the world's 13th-richest person, Google's cofounder Sergey Brin.

Butterfly isn't the tech mogul's only oceangoing investment. Brin has quietly collected a fleet of luxury yachts and water-sports vehicles that those in his inner circle call the "Fly Fleet," a recent Insider investigation into the post-Google lives of the 49-year-old and his fellow Google founder, Larry Page, found.

The blossoming armada is just one part of how he's keeping busy since stepping back from Google's parent company, Alphabet, in 2019 — along with a string of high-flying parties , an effort to build a new generation of zeppelins, and hundreds of millions of dollars in philanthropic donations .

According to people close to Brin, the Fly Fleet consists of three major vessels and a coterie of small craft and water-sports equipment. First, there's Dragonfly — a 73-meter flagship yacht that features a helipad and movie theater and that was once described by Boat International as the "fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water."

There's also the 40-meter Butterfly, which is often moored in the Bay Area, can sleep up to eight guests, and was built by Danish Yachts .

According to associates of Brin, Butterfly's crew members often spend their afternoon downtime kitesurfing in the bay off Redwood City and have gotten involved in the local community, from helping out with scientific research to giving swimming lessons to kids.

Rounding out the main trio is a smaller pleasure craft called Firefly, the lowest profile of the three vessels.

To maintain the fleet, along with a whole flotilla of jet skis, dinghies, kiteboards, and other sports vessels that Brin splashes around on, the Google founder employs a 50-person team around the globe, led by the master mariner Mike Gregory.

Many of Brin's smaller water-sports toys — as well as Page's — have been supplied by Kai Concepts, a startup that builds high-tech aquatic vehicles, including foilboards and a kite-propelled boat. Based in Alameda, California, the company is run by the world-champion windsurfer Don Montague, who cofounded a wind-power company called Makani, which Google acquired in 2013 and later shut down.

Brin is believed to have put money into the business — and Kai employees have helped out with manufacturing projects for Page's now defunct flying-car startup Kittyhawk, two people familiar with the arrangement said.

Page is taking a different approach to boating, sources said. While he spends much of his time at his collection of tropical islands around the world, he has sold his superyacht Senses and downsized to an assortment of smaller vessels.

Boat Focus: Translated 9

W hen you’re preparing to sail in a race that hearkens back to an earlier age, a time when the equipment of the average ocean going yacht was much simpler, it makes sense to look for a boat that was a star of that era. When Marco Trombetti and Isabelle Andrieu, co-founders of the international translation company Translated, looked for a boat to sail in the fully-crewed Ocean Globe Race 2023, they chose a Swan 65 with a globe-girdling pedigree: ADC Accutrac was once owned and raced by British sailor Clair Francis. Aboard ADC Accutrac , Francis and crew finished fifth in the 1977 Whitbread Around the World Race after 126 days and 20 hours at sea.

The rules of the Ocean Globe Race put a premium on competitors in the 2023 race recreating “the spirit of the 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race” on the 50 th anniversary of that event.  

A Sparkman & Stephens design, ADC Accutrac was launched in 1974. After the 1977 Whitbread, Francis sold the boat and it went through a series of owners. When asked why he and Andrieu chose to sail in this boat, Trombetti responded in an email: “We opted for a Swan 65 for two reasons. First off, to take part in the Ocean Globe Race 2023, a celebration of 50 years since the first edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race, one of the requirements was to have a boat built before 1988. We analyzed which models had performed best in the early editions of this epic regatta and discovered that the Swan 65 was the most successful of them all. It was Ramón Carlín on board a Swan 65 — Sayula II — who won the first edition, while in the second edition, three Swan 65s — King’s Legend, Disque d’Or and ADC Accutrac — placed second, fourth, and fifth respectively. 

“The Sparkman & Stephens Swan 65 is an iconic boat crafted from Nautor Swan’s ambitious and winning design. It is considered by many to be the queen of the seas – a perfect blend of performance and looks.

“Our Swan 65, Translated 9 , is the one that came fifth in the second edition. Back then, it was captained by Clare Francis, the first female skipper to take part in the Whitbread. This adds a fundamental value to our company’s boat: as a pioneer in artificial intelligence to support human creativity, Translated believes that human values — rather than technology — are the key to achieving ambitious goals. And it was precisely to promote these values, and our motto of ‘We Believe in Humans,’ that we decided to participate in the OGR 23, the most human race there is.”

At one point in its history the boat was named Force 9 of London and had fallen into disrepair. Italian sailor Nicola Parolin got the boat back in shape and sailing again. Trombetti and Andrieu then purchased the Swan 65 and renamed it Translated 9 .  

The boat underwent an extensive refit by VMV Yacht Design at Marelift in Fano, Italy. Trombetti commented on the work: “Our refit was intended not only to bring the vessel in line with the rules of the Ocean Globe Race 2023, where no technology or modern materials are allowed on board, but also to restore the boat to its original design and to its former glory.

“The refit was led by Vittorio Malingri and assisted by many of the crew members who will compete in the Ocean Globe Race. It was crucial for the members of our crew to know and understand every single detail of Translated 9 so that, if anything were to break down in the middle of the ocean, they would know exactly where to go to work. 

“The restoration involved all areas of the boat. We dismantled and restored it from top to bottom, and the refit covered some of the internal structures, all the onboard equipment including the tanks, and the engine room. We carried out structural testing of all the steel, including the rudder shaft and the propeller shaft, and we replaced all the pieces of the deck, setting up a new layout with the construction of a doghouse. Lastly, we replaced the masts.”

As a tune-up for the Ocean Globe Race Translated 9 sailed in the 3,600-mile Cape Town to Rio Race in January 2023. In addition to Marco Trombetti and Vittorio Malingri, the crew for the race was chosen from a pool of 1,400 applicants all new to ocean sailing.  

When asked about the Rio race Trombetti wrote: “The boat performed really well in the Cape2Rio. Considering that we were already in trim for the Ocean Globe Race, so we didn’t have modern technology on board, we managed to finish fourth. Translated 9 rode the waves perfectly and made excellent use of the winds.

“With an international crew of young people under 24 who grew a great deal during this ocean journey, after an excellent start and a few periods of dead calm that slowed our progress, we managed to mount a comeback and finish just a few hours behind the first three boats, which had technology on board. For the last three days, when the wind was reaching speeds of 50 knots, Translated 9 flew across the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It was an important test. We became aware of our potential and identified the areas where we need to improve. 

“We are convinced that the journey, and above all the growth that takes place during the journey, is the most valuable element of any adventure in sport and in life.”

The next challenge for Trombetti, Translated 9 and its young crew is the Ocean Globe Race, slated to begin in September 2023 from Europe (the starting and ending port have yet to be announced) and stop in Cape Town, Auckland, New Zealand and Punta del Este, Uruguay before returning for a finish in Europe. According to the company the selection process for crew to sail on Translated 9 in the OGR 2023 is still open, and “anyone who wants to and believes they can take on a challenge as extreme as it is extraordinary” can apply at www.translated.com/9. n
