Sunset champagne cruise from the V&A Waterfront

One of the best views we’ve ever had of Table Mountain is from this sunset cruise. The mountain glows in Golden Hour, and looks all the more striking rising out of the choppy ocean waters.

This experience is also a great bit of fun, the perfect romantic date or anniversary evening – especially when topped off with dinner at the Waterfront! We’ve put together all the information you need, along with our own experience of the champagne sunset cruise.

What you need to know

Cost: ~ R570 – although there are sometimes off-peak specials, so keep an eye out!

Duration: 1.5 hours

Tickets: You can buy tickets here or in person at the Waterfront – both options cost the same.

Starting time: This depends on the season, as we are, after all, chasing the sunset!

Alternative options: If you prefer to go earlier you can join this day cruise – it’s also cheaper because champagne isn’t included; you also have the option of this dinner and cruise combo if you want to have a full date evening.

What to wear: Dress warmly and wear closed shoes! Even in summer, it can get really chilly when the sun goes down; particularly on a windy day.

• If you go over the weekend, the boat can get quite full
• They play music (not too loudly) which can feel a bit frustrating if you want to hear the wind and the waves
• If you want to bring the whole family it can get a bit pricey

Our sunset champagne cruise Cape Town

We really loved this cruise. Starting off with a plastic glass of bubbly as we stepped on the boat, we found a spot to sit on the front of the catamaran, securing a perfect view. The catamaran pushed slowly out of the harbour, and then we were leaving the city center behind and sailing out on the ocean.

We rounded a bright red buoy covered with young seals sunning themselves. From this vantage point we also spotted a whale curving slowly out of the water! Unfurling the sails, the boat picked up speed and crashed through the waves, everyone laughing and enjoying getting a bit splashed. The guides topped up everyone’s glasses and gave a little safety briefing in case anything went wrong.

It all had a really laid-back, easy vibe, and everyone was chatting and taking pictures, getting that shot for the gram.

Watching the sunset from the boat

The sky slowly turned pink and the city glowed in the golden hour. It was incredible to watch the sunset from here – I come from a small Klein Karoo town surrounded by mountains, so we always watched the sun go down long before it really went past the edge of the world. But here, with nothing but ocean, you can watch its egg-like body slip down, ending with just a tiny line of light before that winks out too.

Sailing back to shore

After this the light quickly rushes out of the sky and things get chilly. The guides brought out blankets to keep everyone snug, and some of us bought one more drink from the cash bar.

As we edged back into the harbour, the moon glowed bright and the many Waterfront lights reflected beautifully in the water. It felt super peaceful after the excitement of the choppy waves and wild-rushing wind.

The disembarking was all very quick and efficient – the skipper brought us in, people on the shore tied us down, and we walked right off the boat and a few steps over to the restaurant we’d picked to continue the celebrations! Easy and terrific.

Overnight accommodation … after your cruising / sailing experience there is an unique option for staying overnight in the iconic V&A Waterfront, berthed right outside the Victoria and Alfred Hotel on the North Wharf adjacent to the adjacent La Parada Restaurant.

Cash / Card Bar, 2 x Heads (toilets), 1 x Galley (kitchen), Trampoline area & Roof Covering, onboard sound system, Padded Seating, teak decking, Blankets, free WIFI (coming soon). Tour Description

Set sail and join us for some sundowners on the prestigious IQ Catamaran, departing from the iconic V&A Waterfront, heading along the Atlantic coastline with picturesque view of the Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles mountain range. Enjoy the African Sunset at sea whilst sipping on a complimentary glass of champagne, there could also be a chance to spot some of the incredible marine life that Cape Town has to offer such as Dolphins, Whales, Seals, Penguins and Sun Fish.

Minimum capacity – 4 passengers. Maximum 33 passengers.

Departure time

17h30 – 19h00 (varies depending on seasons). Boarding time 30 minutes prior departure time.

Table Bay and surrounding areas and routing is weather dependent.

Cruise time and cruise course are dependent on weather conditions and at the discretion of the captain. You and your guests’ safety will always be our primary priority.

What To Wear

Sunglasses, hats, a jersey or windbreaker as well as non-deck marking shoes (e.g. trainers/deck shoes), no black soles or high heels. You will be required to remove your shoes or shoe covers will be provided.

Full crew and fuel for the trip. Complimentary champagne only (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic options available). Otherwise a cash / card bar is onboard for any other beverages. Free WIFI (coming soon).

The vessel will have strict COVID-19 Protocols in place and require all clients to please follow all regulations when entering the premises in order to reduce transmission. The Mirage features a fully stocked bar on board where guests can pay either in cash or by deposit prior to the charter. For those summer cocktails, we can even hire a slushy machine! Please refer to the attached list for the available drinks.

We kindly ask that guests refrain from bringing their own drinks on board under any circumstance. However, if there is a specific drink not on the list, the boat will arrange it for you.

Please note that sponsors of beers or wines will incur a corkage fee of R5,000 (maximum of 20 bottles of wine and 120 beers allowed).

We highly recommend canapé style catering, and we would be delighted to assist you in finding the perfect chef or catering company that can cater to your specific requirements. Please refer to the attached sample menu for your convenience.

Please note that guests are strictly prohibited from bringing their own catering under any circumstance.

Service fee:

A 15% service charge is charged on the food and drinks which is dispersed to the crew.

For all charters of 60+ guests, a mandatory service of security is required.

DJ / Entertainer:

The Mirage is equipped with an onboard sound system that has USB and Bluetooth connections, making it easy for you to play your own music.

In the event that you wish to provide your own DJ, they can use the onboard equipment (CDJs 2000 & speakers), and the fee for the first 6 hours is approximately R9,500, with an additional charge of R2,000 per hour thereafter.

If you prefer to have a DJ provided by us, the rate starts at approximately R9,500 for the first 6 hours (varying depending on the event), with an additional charge of R2,000 per hour thereafter. DJ hire for up to a 4-hour charter is charged at R3,250. Additional rates may apply for extended periods, and we will be happy to provide you with a quote.

Water toys:

We are pleased to offer the use of our floating pool, water slide, and SUP boards for charters lasting 4 hours or longer.

Lifesavers:

If you have a larger group that will be participating in water sports, we can arrange to have lifeguards on board for added safety.

The bridge deck level boasts a vast saloon area, while the upper deck features an expansive flybridge with VIP seating for 61 passengers, unobstructed views of Cape Town's stunning vistas, and a second bar for ultimate convenience and service. With seating for up to 52 guests, the large contemporary bar and huge open area on the deck are perfect for dancing, entertainment, and socializing.

Inside, enjoy complete comfort with three luxuriously fitted bathrooms accessible via stairs leading into the hulls from the saloon. Indulge in gourmet cuisine prepared on board in the fully equipped commercial-grade kitchen or on the two large stainless steel outdoor grills on the aft deck.
