What do you do when your parent company has successfully launched four different powerboat lines? Well, if you’re Monte Carlo Yachts (MCY), a subsidiary of Group Beneteau, you launch a fifth one that is nothing like the others.

Carla Demaria is the brains behind Monte Carlo Yachts, a boatbuilder that was developed to bring Italian style and larger motoryachts into the parent business’ stable. Once MCY established itself with flybridge models like the 65 and 70, Demaria became the head of both Monte Carlo Yachts and Beneteau Power. She soon discovered the full potential of an in-development series called MC. It’s a midsize yacht line that bridges the gap between the existing Monte Carlo Yachts and Beneteau-branded powerboats. Her goal became finalizing the yacht’s modified, deep-V hull form, bringing in some Italian flair and ­creating a new cruiser concept. And the first one is a 49-footer called the MC5.

It’s worth looking at that hull design that started the MC line. It’s basically a V-shaped hull that transitions to a 12-degree transom deadrise, but the innovative part was extending and deepening the V as it runs forward. At the bow, it joins the stem at a near right angle instead of the normal rounded forefoot. This produces the fashionable vertical stem at the bow, but conventional wisdom suggests that such a design will not handle well in a following sea because the bow will dig in. I wondered how the Volvo Penta IPS-driven MC5 would perform in the prevailing spirited seas.

The conditions off Cannes, France, featured wind-generated waves from the east and a considerable legacy swell coming in from the southwest, creating confused and challenging 3- to 6-foot seas. Running into the waves before we encountered the swell, the MC5 behaved impeccably, slicing and dicing. The hull lifted onto plane with little change in trim, and the ride was dry and well under control with little slamming from the chines because of the extended fine entry.

The challenge came in the following seas when the legacy swell was the dominant wave pattern. I was concerned that the bow would dig into the waves. While I ran the MC5 at 20 knots with the big swell on the quarter, probably the worst conditions for a vessel with this hull form, the steering took a bit more wheel to keep on course, but there was no cause for alarm. With the IPS, I was steering with propeller thrust, and this worked well when combined with the excellent directional stability of the hull. Overall, it was a solid, stable ride.

At all times the boat felt composed, and I realized that underneath the eye-catching styling there was a sound and sensible hull design. The MC5’s top speed was just a shade faster than 28 knots, and, as expected, the control in the following seas improved as the speed was increased. As per usual with IPS drives, low-speed maneuverability was precise, especially with the optional joystick control.

My test vessel’s twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels and IPS drives are fitted in an engine compartment that is spacious and accessible, even with an aft crew cabin, which is accessed through a hatch built into the cockpit’s transom settee. If you don’t want the cabin here, the space serves as a lazarette. There is no garage because tender stowage is on the high-low swim platform.

As for the styling, her Italian influence is quite evident. This yacht’s pale-­turquoise hull contrasted starkly with the black trim of her flybridge. Her profile is somewhat upright, emphasized by that vertical bow, but her sloping windscreen relieves this and the style grows on you. Instead of hull windows, the designers used traditional portholes with large ports, allowing generous amounts of light into the master cabin.

Although there is a strong styling focus, the MC5 has many practical features. For instance, the cockpit and salon are on the same level, which makes for easy movement about the boat and adds to the feeling of openness. Handholds are plentiful for secure movement about the boat, and the side decks are wide enough for you to walk up to the foredeck in comfort. With the galley located aft on the main deck, it’s readily accessible from either the cockpit or the salon. The designers have gone to great pains to hide the fact that this is a galley when it is not in use, and there are even foldaway taps at the sink.

The MC5’s salon features large windows that offer great vistas even when guests are seated. A fold-out, leather-covered table can be raised or lowered, and on the port side of the forward area is a series of lockers for convenient stowage.

Her belowdecks space is not quite as abundant. The three cabins feel a bit squeezed in, a reminder that this is only a 49-footer, but they’re still comfortable. The forward VIP is particularly inviting, but most of the space is occupied by the bed. This cabin shares its head with the twin-bunk cabin abaft it and to starboard. Each bunk has its own porthole.

A master cabin with en suite head lies under the salon, and while there is 6-foot-6-inch headroom around the bed, it’s limited over the bed because the salon floor drops down above it. Because of the hull’s V-shape, the cabin sinks down into it and there are varying floor heights to contend with. Round hull-side windows about 3 feet in diameter are a great feature that bring in abundant natural light. Throughout this yacht’s interior, the MC5’s style quotient combines a restful mix of stained oak wood, quality fabrics and textured coverings with dark-brown leather trim.

Her flybridge is huge and has all the required features for entertaining at sea, including optional barbecue counters and an icebox. At the single helm seat, there is a commanding view and room on the console for your electronics. The reverse-angle windscreen, however, does not offer a lot of protection, so you get a real feeling of the performance up here.

Visibility from the starboard-side lower helm is restricted from about 45 degrees to amidships, both at speed and at idle, by a composite window frame that supports the single-piece windshield. There is an opening window to the starboard side that helps. The single-lever electronic controls are easily reached and palmed by a right hand. Twin Simrad displays as well as the engine instrumentation can be seen with a quick glance.

Monte Carlo has done a great job executing this combination of style and performance, from the helm setup to the ocean-taming hull design. So often performance in lively seas takes second place, but that’s where the MC5 shines. She may be a midsize yacht, but her build, ride and style say big boat all day long.

Boat Review: Monte Carlo MC5 by Beneteau

The combination of Italian design and French boat building has created a stunning yacht that is sure to out shine all other yachts in her class. A great boat for dock-to-dock coastal cruising and weekending

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in her shoe. The old English rhyme details the “somethings” a bride should wear on her wedding day for good luck, and it seems Beneteau borrowed its advice — with the exception of the now-defunct sixpence — when developing the new Monte Carlo (MC) 5 , part of the builder’s line of power cruisers that addresses each point.

The MC5’s retro styling, with round portlights and a straight shear, evokes old-school design sensibilities, but at the same time it is a brand-new model with every modern amenity and advanced technology available. Its Italian flare and luxury finish were borrowed from Beneteau’s upscale line of Monte Carlo Yachts (MCY), 65 feet and larger . And while you don’t have to choose a blue hull, it looks good.

Monte Carlo is a line of mid-range power cruisers created to bring the MCY line below 65 feet and bridge the gap between Beneteau’s GT series and the upscale MCY, which reaches into superyacht territory. With 40 and 50-footers already launched and a 60-footer on the drawing board, Beneteau hopes to cover all segments of a diverse market with the MC series.

Construction & Design

Seen from the front, the 49-foot MC5 has a distinctive, wine glass–shaped bow with a deep V and hard chines that lead aft. Above that, the bow flares dramatically as if to catch up with the on-deck beam above. However, go aft and you’ll find a relatively flat transom with only a 15-degree deadrise. The hull shape accomplishes three things:

1. It keeps the bow driving forward by splitting waves instead of pounding down onto them, thereby minimizing spray on deck.

2. It keeps the aft end of the boat from rolling.

3. It adds lift and efficiency.

Naval architects Le Bihan and Tableau also gave the balsa-cored hull a beamy fore-section and nearly straight hull sides, so the beam at the waterline is almost what it is on deck, which creates the tremendous interior living volume.

The Great Outdoors

The MC5 is available in a hardtop or flybridge version, and for my money, the flybridge can’t be beat. It’s as if there’s a whole boat’s worth of space planted right on top of the boat itself. Ascend the teak-covered steps (with storage inside), and you’ll come up to a U-shaped settee that will seat eight around a teak dining table.

The seating continues on the port side with forward- and aft-facing benches that can be joined to form a double sunpad or used for companion seating across from the helm. The single helm seat to starboard is adjustable, and the dash includes a single multifunction display, a joystick and engine controls, a compass, and various other smaller displays and switches. A wraparound reverse windshield keeps the spray away from the driver. Visibility is good in all directions except to the aft corners, which is why a third helm station in the aft cockpit below may be a good option if you often back into a slip. Just aft of the helm seat is a cabinet with an optional galley module that includes a Kenyon electric grill, a sink and an ice-maker.

If it’s too windy to cook up top, you can still enjoy an outdoor grill on the more protected aft cockpit. The top of the transom has a compartment that can be used either for small storage or an outdoor galley with a Kenyon grill, a sink and a food-prep area.

Impeccable Interior

Like many of the other latest designs, the MC5’s interior starts in the exterior, as the cockpit joins the galley and salon when the large glass and stainless steel doors are folded outward on both port and starboard. The galley is all the way aft, so you can easily serve dinner outside or in, and it is somewhat customizable in that additional overhead cabinets may be added, creating room for added refrigeration or a dishwasher below the counters. An electric stove and a large sink are standard, while a microwave is an option. Countertop space is limited, but if you’re already cooking in two other areas, it’ll do nicely.

Step up to the port-side dinette where six can gather around a folding table. To starboard is a straight sofa directly aft of the helm seat. So in all, almost a dozen people can be seated. A 32-inch popup flat-screen TV behind the starboard sofa will make watching movies fun, and even the cook will be able to see the screen from the galley. Headroom in the salon is a comfortable 6 feet, 6 inches, which gives the interior an open and airy feel.

With Nuvolari & Lenard Italian styling, Monte Carlo hints at what the MCY line promises. Surfaces padded with fabric and leather deaden sound, while lacquered cabinetry adds light. The finish is brushed oak, which is light and heavily textured and alternates nicely with the smooth leather accents that abound. Multiple fabrics in contrasting light and dark colors and varied textures add depth and dimension, so the eye lingers on fine details such as perfect stitching and leather-wrapped handholds and cabinet pulls.

At the Helm

Another step up takes you to the inside helm station to starboard. The slight elevation helps with the headroom in the cabin below but retains enough overhead space that the driver can stand up if needed. The dash is well laid out with room for two optional Simrad NSS 12-inch multifunction displays, a Volvo Penta EVC screen, and assorted controls and displays for the autopilot, bow thruster and, of course, the IPS joystick. The window outboard opens, so air is plentiful and communication with anyone on deck or the dock is easy. The helm seat is doublewide with storage underneath, and just to port, underneath the giant one-piece windshield, is storage for charts and cruising guides.

Sleep Tight

However the MC5 will be used most, it would be a shame not to overnight on it, given the sumptuous staterooms. The layout includes three cabins and two heads, so six can sleep in private comfort, but that’s only the beginning. The full-beam master stateroom is a suite with a generously proportioned bed with a padded headboard and good headroom. In fact, due to the stepped salon above, the headroom all around the bed is 6 feet, 1 inch. Lounges to port and starboard invite you to sit with a book and look out the oversized, fixed, round portlights with opening round ports embedded within.

The master bath — and that’s a better term for it than head — has a vessel sink and a large separate shower stall with a slatted teak seat. There is an opening port in the head, but only one and not in the shower area, so it may get a bit steamy. An electric VacuFlush head is standard. The large stateroom doesn’t feel buried within the vessel, and together with the head, it forms a space plush enough to entice you to linger in the morning before heading topside.

The forward VIP stateroom is defined by light, with four round opening portlights and a deck hatch overhead, and the third stateroom has over/under bunks and locker space at the foot of the beds.

Performance

The MC5 is a pod-driven boat, which is good in multiple ways. First, the pods move the engines far aft, creating more interior space for the master stateroom. Second, engine noise is moved farther away from the living spaces. And finally, docking a boat with pod drives and joystick control is a breeze and builds confidence, even in new skippers.

The standard engines are twin Volvo Penta IPS500 370 hp diesels, but you can upgrade to IPS 600s that have 435 hp. The upgrade provides only a knot or two of speed at the top end, but it may help if the boat will be pushing into heavy head seas. The engine space is accessed via a hatch in the aft cockpit sole, and there is plenty of room in the machinery space for the optional generator and extra batteries if the four service batteries (140 aH each) are not enough, although there’s no reason they shouldn’t be.

In the bay of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, we took the MC5 out for a spin on a sunny day with 1 to 2 feet of wind chop and 10 knots of breeze. The boat came up on plane at 16 to 17 knots and did so without fuss. The ride was so smooth we didn’t really notice how fast we were moving until we reached a cruising speed of 18 to 20 knots. Wide open in those conditions, the boat zipped along at 23 knots. Fuel tankage is 344 gallons, which is plenty for point-to-point coastal cruising.

The next day, we tried the same in 15 knots of wind and a 3-foot chop. There was little difference except that we reached 21.8 knots against the wind. The sharp bow split the waves and wasn’t bothered in the least, even in wakes that came broadside. The hydraulic steering was smooth, and there was little roll as we sat idling, waiting for the photo boat to catch up.

Unexpected Finds

You can’t overlook two essential add-ons offered with the MC5, which are meant to ease your movement on water and land. First, the official dinghy for the MC5 is the Williams Tender 285 jet boat (although you can choose a traditional RIB). According to Beneteau, 20 percent of new boat owners in this class want additional water toys such as PWCs but also need a tender, and the quandary is where to store both. Voila. The Williams fiberglass tender can pull double duty. It is an 80 hp jetboat shaped like an inflatable dinghy, but it can reach 35 to 40 knots. It has a tow ring to pull wakeboarders and enough room to get the whole crew to shore; plus, a custom cradle can be mounted on the MC5’s hydraulic swim platform. The jetboat costs $34,000, but since it’s a PWC and a dinghy in one, that’s not bad. You can also have it customized to match your MC5’s hull color.

Once you get to land, run around on the Beneteau-branded Mondo Footloose electric bike. It has a lithium battery, so you can pedal or ride in style up to 28 mph. A charge will last 45 to 60 minutes depending on your speed and terrain. It folds into a small package and can be stored in the huge lazarette in the MC5’s transom. It comes in several colors and offers options such as an upgraded seat and storage panniers. The bike will set you back $5,000-plus but hey, if you’re set on arriving in style, why lose that momentum when you reach the dock?

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.

Renaissance

Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire

Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.

Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo

Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour. 

Length : 90m Builder : Benetti

Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that  Stefano Natucci  collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design  is responsible for the interior design.

Fountainhead

Length : 87.8m   Builder : Feadship

Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout.  Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.

Coral Ocean

Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen

A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf. 

Length : 72m   Builder : Lürssen

Delivered in 2006, Titania  (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.

Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.

Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts

The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .

Length : 66m   Builder : Oceanco

AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.

Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter

The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Exterior design

With a dynamic silhouette, slender bow and high-performance hull, the Monte Carlo 5S distinguishes itself in any sea conditions it meets. Driven by 2 Volvo IPS 600 engines, this motor cruiser is both sporty and refined, combining good power with incredible manoeuvrability. The unique hardtop lounge area on the Monte Carlo 5 S is the hallmark of a luxury yacht. 

Interior design

Seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, the main deck features a sunroof, which opens above the driving station. The interior salon is a very well-ventilated, elegant and comfortable living space.  The lower deck boasts three cabins with en-suite shower rooms fitted out elegantly with attention to detail. Highly customizable, the Monte Carlo 5 S is as charming in a modern light brushed oak ambiance as it is in a warmer matt walnut.

Terrace lounge

The Monte Carlo 5 S has a genuine lounge in the hardtop area. Converting into a huge sunbathing area for four, this space is unique in its kind, equipped with an audio system, refrigerator and a canvas awning.

The Monte Carlo 5 S offers a choice between two atmospheres: brushed oak or matt walnut. Combined with impeccable finishes - cream padding with bronze reflections, brown soft touch finish and overstitched wine-colored leather – these two woodwork options offer harmoniously attractive interiors.

Night spaces

Below deck, the two extremely luxurious cabins have en-suite heads with separate showers.  The master suite aft is beam-wide and splendid hull portholes flooding the interior with soft light – a characteristic feature of the Monte Carlo range.  The bed layout in the spacious, comfortable and elegant VIP suite to the bow can be adapted in two different ways. 

Steering station

Equipped with the latest large SIMRAD screens, the steering station enjoys perfect visibility thanks to a single-piece windshield. Designed for the Monte Carlo range, the tanned leather driver’s seat is extremely beautiful and its comfort is second to none.
