LEANDER G Yacht – Stunning $59M Superyacht

The LEANDER G yacht is a 74.98-meter superyacht Leander G constructed in 1993 by Peene-Werft , a cutting-edge shipyard that specializes in new build and repairs of naval vessels.

His guests include members of the English royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, on a tour of the United Kingdom and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in the Caribbean.

Throughout her illustrious career, the boat has required just three repairs. In 2018, the first repair was made, and it included considerable renovations to the guest and staff accommodations for the first repair. 

Then in 2019, a complete engine overhaul was performed. The most current revisions took place in February 2020 in Navantia, Spain.

Being an active yacht, she has a reputation for navigating worldwide destinations from the Baltic to the sunny Bahamas.

Since her delivery in 1993, Leander G has served as an unofficial royal yacht for prominent members of the royal family on occasion.

Her interior design was penned by Polina Nunns with a style that is reminiscent of an “English country home.” She features a piano room, a viewing terrace, a bar, a swimming pool, a gym, and a dining room.

She is the quintessential gentleman’s yacht, complete with a railing in front of the alcove and a massive mural that portrays an 18th-century sailing scene. 

The English country house vibe can be seen and felt throughout the vessel, with old mahogany furniture, damask-patterned carpets, and flowery wallpaper.

Claus Kusch was in charge of her build and exterior design, and he did not disappoint.

LEANDER G was originally commissioned as the third boat in the Katalina series for Brigadier Timothy Landon, an adviser to the Sultan of Oman.

Her construction began only weeks after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. Since the shipyard had previously only produced military boats, Kusch had to accompany a small group of his employees to Monaco to demonstrate what a superyacht was.

It seemed as if the boat had been custom-made for him, despite it being originally built for someone else.

LEANDER G has ten luxurious cabins that can sleep up to 20 guests, including two owner suites with an interconnecting office and living area.

Up to 26 people may be accommodated in staff cabins next to the owner’s living area. 

Additionally, the boat has a spacious swimming pool and a gym, allowing passengers to unwind and feel at peace while on board.

LEANDER G is powered by two 3,600hp Deutz-MWM SBV12M628 diesel engines, which provide her with a maximum speed of 18.5 knots and a cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles at 14.5 knots.

She is equipped with no fewer than six tenders and a plethora of toys, as well as an aft deck helipad for charter helicopters.

Leander G Superyacht Back on the Market

Sold in February 2016, the 74.98 metre motor yacht Leander G is back on the market, listed for sale by Nicholas Edmiston at Edmiston & Company .

Delivered in January 1992, the yacht was formerly owned by the late Vice Admiral Sir Donald Gosling KCVO RNR for two decades.  Built in steel and aluminium by the German yard Peene Werft on the Baltic Sea, she was built under the supervision of Claus Kusch . An English country home style interior by Pauline Nunns accommodates as many as 20 guests in 10 cabins consisting of a master suite, VIP suite, three doubles and five twins, all with en suite bathroom facilities.

Leander G was acknowledged as one of the great yachts of the 20th century and over the past 20 years she cruised throughout the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and to every point in the Caribbean Sea.

Lloyds classed and MCA compliant, she hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on a tour of Great Britain and HRH Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall in the Caribbean, carrying out the informal role of royal yacht to senior members of the royal family on official tours.

Over €25 million has been invested in her upkeep under her current ownership, including considerable upgrades to guest, crew and mechanical systems and a full repaint carried out in 2018. Her top speed is 18.5 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles at 14.5 knots with power coming from two 3,600hp Deutz-MWM SBV12M628 diesel engines.

The 75m/246'1" motor yacht 'Leander G' (ex. Leander) was built by Peene-Werft in Germany at their Wolgast shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Heinz Vollers and she was completed in 1993. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Kusch Yachts and she was last refitted in 2020.

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Leander G is an impressive and luxurious superyacht that offers sumptuous accommodation for twelve guests in ten elegantly styled suites, staterooms and cabins. Superyacht Leader G is run by an efficient and expertly trained crew headed by Captain Jules Cope and has a wide array of spacious saloons, well-appointed deck areas and incredible amenities. Built in 1992 at German shipyard Peene Werft, 75 metre Leander G has a maximum speed of eighteen knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, making her a fantastic charter vessel for family vacations, group holidays or one-off corporate functions.

Leander G’s accommodations are as elegant as they are comfortable and inviting. Like the rest of Leander G, her master suite mixes rich styling with incredible luxury. It starts with the study where a bookcase filled with leather bound classics slides open to reveal a TV, DVD and CD music system and a sturdy writing desk, exquisite model ships and paintings with a nautical theme combine to reinforce the lavish tones. Through a hidden sliding door lies the master bedroom with its king-size bed with a wide screen plasma TV and hidden DVD and surround sound system mounted opposite. Five large windows offer panoramic views port and starboard, while entrances to the dressing room and bathroom flank the TV, the latter features both a large bath and walk in shower. The suite is accentuated by large mirrors and windows over the bathroom’s starboard side flood the entire area with natural light. The second stateroom holds a king-size bed in a spacious bedroom area which adjoins with a living room and study. The TV, DVD and CD surround sound system are hidden behind a sliding cabinet while the ample bathroom contains both a tub and a walk in shower. Four large port side windows provide impressive views and an abundance of natural light. In addition, Leander G also has three double guest cabins and five twin guest cabins.

Leander G’s main saloon provides incredible relaxation: windows on the stern, port and starboard allow natural light to flood the room, a perfect complement to the soft yellow and cream décor. Balanced by dark wood furnishings and dramatic maritime oil paintings, other amenities of this lovely room include a grand piano, a collection of several hundred DVD’s, a stairway leading to the guest cabins below and large sliding glass doors which open onto the aft deck and offer panoramic views. The dining room as well is exceptionally well lit by its large port and starboard windows, and dramatically accented by its marble effect pillars which surround the room and match perfectly the marble effect table which easily accommodates up to 20 diners. The dining room ceiling has been designed to give the impression of looking through skylights onto a faintly clouded blue sky, while an entire wall is devoted to a gorgeous nautical painting with mythical inspirations. The observation room offers breath-taking 180 degree views as well as an area to relax in front of the TV, entertain friends or work at a desk. Large double glass doors lead from the bar on the Jacuzzi deck and a capacious dining table is accompanied by two smaller versions for a more intimate dining experience. The pool deck, with flow pool, offers panoramic views from the stern as well as shaded tables, sun bed and comfortable loungers. The well-maintained teak decking and varnished teak handrails throughout are as beautiful to the eye as they feel beneath the feet.

Leander G’s other notable amenities include a gymnasium with rowing machine, cycling machine, weights bench, stretching bar, a range of yoga and exercise DVD’s, a sauna with adjacent shower and an adjoining dive room. Leander G’s toys and tenders include three wave runners, water skis, three windsurfers, three kneeboards, two four metre laser sailing dinghies, two sets of tows, scuba gear with a compressor and fishing equipments as well as six tenders including a thirty two foot custom tender, one eighteen foot and one twenty foot Ribtec semi-rigid and one eighteen foot and one twenty foot RIB.

Leander G is available for charter in the Mediterranean for the summer season and the Caribbean and the Bahamas during the winter season.

An exciting interesting attribute of this well equiped motor yacht is her helicopter landing pad. The naval architect responsible for this yacht's design work in respect of this ship is Claus Kusch. The interior design work was the talent of Heinz Vollers/Katalin Landon/Pauline Nunns. Building & Designing for Luxury Yacht LEANDER G

Claus Kusch was the naval architect involved in the technical vessel composition for LEANDER G. Also the company Claus Kusch expertly worked on this undertaking. Interior designer Heinz Vollers/Katalin Landon/Pauline Nunns was responsible for the overall internal styling. In 1992 she was formally launched to triumph in Wolgast and post sea trials and final completion was afterwards delivered to the owner. Peene-Werft completed their new build motor yacht in Germany. The hull was crafted from steel. The motor yacht superstructure component is fabricated for the most part using aluminium. With a beam of 12.77 m or 41.9 feet LEANDER G has impressive internal space. She has a reasonably deep draught of 4.15m (13.6ft). She had refit maintenance and modification carried out in 2005.

The SBV 12M 628 engine powering the yacht is built by DEUTZ-MWM. LEANDER G is propelled by twin screw propellers. The engine of the yacht creates 3260 horse power (or leander G kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the yacht is therefore 6520 HP / 4800 KW. As far as stabalisers are concerned she was built with Simplex Passive. The bow thrusters are Schottel / Stern: Schottel.

REFIT OF ICONIC YACHT 75m LEANDER-G

In November 2020 Vickers Studio signed the contract to design the refit of the iconic 75m yacht Leander G. The scope of works was for new layouts on all four decks with new interior fit out of all surfaces, including all new lighting, furniture, fabrics and accessories.

The client was a very experienced yacht owner with a clear idea of the intention for the new interior, design and exterior furniture. The timescale was very demanding, and Leander was already waiting in RMK Istanbul with the teams in place to strip out the interior. All that was needed was the design…

Vickers Studio were awarded this prestigious project on the back of John’s experience of classic yacht interiors and delivering large volumes of detailed work on tight time schedules.

The process started with a seven day visit to the client’s homes and current yachts. There was extensive time spent onboard reviewing the current state of Leander, and it was agreed by all parties that the best way forward would be to fully reconfigure the interior layout maximising the potential of the yachts volume. At the end of the week, which had been spent sketching layouts and joinery details with the owner, John had provisional approvals on much of the design concept.

The interior joinery was all based around the clients love of classical architecture and design, using the ‘golden ratio’ to create all the panelling proportions. The design included careful lighting of teak and white painted wall panelling in elegant symmetry, with feature furniture on loose rugs over wood floors.  The client’s art collection was of paramount importance and many of the interior visuals contained art positioning and the actual dimensions of various pieces. The client loved the Vickers interior for yacht Blue II and so a similar idea of a classical interior but with a modern fresh feel was created.

Through November 2020, the Vickers team created pen visuals, interior photo-real visuals and interior CAD information for the main deck, upper deck and bridge deck. These went to the client for final approval and then onto the interior fit-out teams. Throughout December and January the Vickers design team modified and approved the workshop drawings, developing solutions to the various refit issues which arose following the strip out of the interior. The difficulties of the Covid lockdowns were numerous, but there were good working relationships with all parties and a lot of Zoom calls!

In June 2021, Leander emerged from RMK with three new decks and exterior areas, ready for a full program for the owner’s summer. She returned to RMK at the end of the season for the final installation of the lower deck, guest cabins and beach club, before final completion of the two-year refit in June 2022.

Vickers Studio are covered by NDAs regarding the final interior photos, but safe to say it is one of their proudest yacht completions, not least because of Leander having been the unofficial royal yacht for the British royal family. Working with this client was an honour and a privilege for the Vickers team. Not only was she completed in record time, but we feel this classic yacht now has the interior detailing fitting for a yacht of this iconic pedigree, now launched as Meserret III.
