South Shore Long Island, NY Yacht clubs

yacht clubs south shore long island

I have kept my boat on the North Shore in the Long Island Sound for the last 2 years. However, I live on the South Shore and would love to have easier access to my boat. Does anyone know of sailing friendly yacht clubs on the South Shore in Nassau County?

yacht clubs south shore long island

The Great South bay is pretty shallow and there are few anchorages on the South Shore. It's not a place for a deep draft sailboat.

yacht clubs south shore long island

What size boat do you have, and draft? Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club has a pretty friendly group. Not sure if that make your drive any better.

I take it you mean, as you have said, south shore of Long Island SOUND , not the south shore of Long ISLAND. So, clarity would be good if you want the best responses Mark Click to expand...

vbiz59 said: Sailing and sailing clubs west of Robert Moses state park are mostly non-existent as there is no water and a long trek thru marsh channels to either the Jones or E.Rockaway inlets. There are some locations In Red Hook, or Graves End, Bklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge Club if you care for the area. What there is of the Great south bay west of RM has average mean soundings of 1' East of RM which is firmly in Suffolk county, you have Bayshore, Oakdale and Sayville yacht clubs respectively which are not to everyone's taste. Alternatively a host of marina's and private dockage exist. Conditions/depths in the GSB east of RM go from 3.5-15' being markedly shallower nearing the edges As you know larger vessels normally steer clear of the south shore as they can't steer into it. Any draft over 3.5' and you need to know where you are. It's a small pool. Click to expand...

I understand you investigating the options on the south shore. There are spots in the GS Bay where larger sailboats can sail, but the options are very limited compared to LI Sound. Yes you can go out into the ocean, but then you will be dealing with an inlet. Consider this change carefully.

I don't think any deep fin boats are going to be sailing in the Great South Bay... water is too thin for that. Even the ferry to Fire Island uses a dredged channel. Further, there are few protected harbors / anchorages. You see power boats going from south shore to FI... and some smaller day sailors. Consider the "length" of the coastline there are remarkable few decent spots to anchor. There is decent sailing "between the forks" and some excellent land "attractions". I moored in Dering Harbor and Stirling Harbor for years and enjoyed East End sailing. The run from the 1GI buoy to East Hamptom was a bean reach both ways and only a few hrs sail. The run to BI was 35 miles... a nice sail for the day. Fishers Island was also a great location to sail to and Newport if you had the 11 or so hrs.

I belong to the South Bay Cruising Club on the South Shore of Long Island. We have no club house, but we race off Bay Shore and Babylon, with the Bay Shore yacht Club and Babylon Yacht club. Both those clubs are nice. Most of us use marinas to keep the boats at, and sail to club activities. You can also look up Sayville Yacht Club and Bellport Yacht Club. A 4 ft. draft is a practical max for the bay, although many have deeper drafts. Fred4936

Just an addendum: I used to live in Nassau years ago. For good sailing you need to go to Suffolk. The is a club called Unqua Corinthian in Amityville, but sailing has died there, mostly motorboats and party goers. There is a club in Hewlett, but I do not know much about them.

Yacht Clubs on the South Shore of Long Island: A Haven for Boating Enthusiasts

Bill Michaels

The History of Yacht Clubs on the South Shore

The origins of yacht clubs.

Yacht clubs have been a part of boating culture for centuries, providing a sense of community for those with a passion for navigating the open waters. The first yacht club was established in 1720 in Cork Harbor, Ireland. The club provided a social gathering place for sailors and helped regulate racing competitions.

The Early Days of Yacht Clubs on Long Island

On the South Shore of Long Island, yacht clubs emerged in the late 1800s as wealthy individuals embraced the sport of yachting. The first club, the Larchmont Yacht Club, was established in 1880 and was soon followed by other prestigious clubs such as the New York Yacht Club and the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club.

The Role of Yacht Clubs in the Community

Yacht clubs on the South Shore of Long Island have always played an important role in the community. They have served as venues for social events and fundraisers, as well as promoting boating safety and education. Many clubs also offer youth programs to introduce young people to the joys of boating.

The Benefits of Joining a Yacht Club

The social aspect.

One of the primary benefits of joining a yacht club is the sense of community it provides. Boating enthusiasts can meet others who share their passion and form lifelong friendships. Many clubs organize social events such as parties, picnics, and regattas, providing members with opportunities to socialize and network.

Access to Facilities

Yacht clubs offer members access to a wide range of facilities, including docks, slips, and moorings. Many clubs also provide boat storage and maintenance services, making it easier for members to care for their vessels. Some clubs even offer dining and lodging accommodations, providing a one-stop-shop for all boating needs.

Educational Opportunities

Yacht clubs on the South Shore of Long Island offer a variety of educational opportunities for members. Many clubs provide sailing lessons and boating safety courses, ensuring that members have the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the open waters safely. Clubs also host seminars on a range of topics, from marine biology to navigation.

Choosing the Right Yacht Club

When choosing a yacht club, location is one of the most important factors to consider. The club should be located near your home or marina, making it easy to access your boat. Additionally, the club should be located in an area that provides good boating opportunities, with easy access to the open waters.

The facilities offered by the yacht club are another important consideration. The club should offer a range of amenities, including dockage, storage, maintenance, and dining facilities. Additionally, the club should be well-maintained and provide a clean and safe environment for members.

Membership Requirements

Each yacht club has its own membership requirements, which can vary widely. Some clubs require members to own a yacht, while others allow non-boat owners to join. Additionally, some clubs have strict membership requirements related to age, gender, or occupation. Be sure to research the membership requirements before joining a club.

Yacht clubs on the South Shore of Long Island provide a haven for boating enthusiasts, offering a sense of community, access to facilities, and educational opportunities. When choosing a yacht club, it is important to consider factors such as location, facilities, and membership requirements to ensure that the club is a good fit for your needs.

Young sailors cruise onto South Shore for major regatta

Young sailors from Los Angeles, Annapolis, Cape Cod and the U.S. Virgin Islands are descending on the South Shore of Long Island this weekend for a major regatta in a sport some say is seeing a resurgence amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The racing at the Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point from Friday through Sunday is attracting about 200 sailors ages 13 to 22 who will compete in two-person boats called "420s."

The regatta is the last of five legs of a championship series that has seen races in Florida, upstate New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. It is the largest regatta on the Great South Bay since the pandemic hit, said organizer Doug Shaw.

It comes amid an uptick in interest in the sport as families find sailboat racing one of the safer activities amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The skipper and one crew member on a 420 are alone on a boat, on the open water, Shaw noted.

"The whole point of sailing is to create a distance between you and the next person" in another competing boat, Shaw said. "You’re out in the open air, nice breeze. It’s not like wrestling or a game where physical contact is an important part of the sport."

The number of sailors in local programs grew as the pandemic became more under control this year, Shaw said. Sayville’s grew from about 110 last year to 140 this year.

"A lot of the South Shore clubs have seen a real bump in their programs this year, particularly for younger kids" who sail a small boat called an Optimist. "The Opti world has kind of exploded this summer, which is just great."

The racers in Blue Point this weekend range from top-level to those trying to get there, Shaw said.

"I’m fairly confident that in this regatta we’ve got future national champions and maybe even a couple of future Olympic sailors," he said. "They’re not at that elite level yet, but they’re on their way."

The Sayville Yacht Club is the home club of Debbie Capozzi, who sailed for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

The Great South Bay and the Sayville Yacht Club once attracted major international regattas and local ones too, but racing waned in past decades. Shaw sees the bay is making a comeback, too.

"On the Eastern Seaboard there is no better venue for the racing of small boats than the South Shore of Long Island," Shaw said.

While sailboat racing may be seen by some as an elite, blue-blood sport, organizers are incorporating a social consciousness angle to the regatta — $10 for every sailor participating will be donated to local charities such as a church soup kitchen or an environmental organization.

The donations are being funded by Magnetic Advisers, a financial services company based in Blue Point, and managed through the social impact management website Phin, also of Blue Point. Sailors can choose where to direct their $10 donation.
