All aboard S.S. Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

State of the Yachting Industry | 2021 Year Review

This article is a transcription of Denison’s “Year in Review” for 2021. Tune in monthly to discover the most recent yachting industry and superyacht news from Denison. Watch the full video above:

Hi, it’s Bob Denison and today we’re going to talk about the year 2021. Which as you probably know was a historic one for a lot of people, and a lot of places, and a lot of industries. Specifically, here in the yachting industry, it was one of the best of all time depending on how you measure. There are people in sales , charter , crew , yacht management . It depends on what you do and where you are at geographically.  But most people were throwing up their hands and saying, “We had the best year ever”. And many people think we’re going to look back on the year 2021 and say, “That will never be repeated again”. That’s one of those great questions here in 2022. How do we repeat it? How do we grow? Is it even possible? And today we’re going to talk specifically about some of the data.

yacht good news 1

First thing that I wanted to dig our teeth into here is total boats sold. So, I go to SoldBoats.com for the data that is going to reflect all boats sold. Power, sail, catamaran, trawlers, big boats, small boats. And the sold boats data shows us in the 2021 there were 58,983 boats sold.

And when you break that number down and get a little more specific, the powerboat side of things represented a total number of 46,870. And you sail boaters out there made of 12,113 boats sold. When you take a look at a map of the US, and the US by the way was the country that was responsible for the most boats sold.

yacht good news 1

When you look at the entire map of the US, the top 5 states that were responsible for more sales than anywhere else was Florida, of course. Number 2, California. Number 3 in the Mid-Atlantic, Maryland. Number 4 going back to the west coast, Washington, and number 5 New York. And the interesting thing about that, when you look a little bit closer is my home state, the best state, Florida, represented about 20% of total boat sales.

So Florida, 12,025 boats sold. And you look at that total number 58,983. It represented just about 1 in 5. Which not only shows you the importance of Florida to the boating and yachting world, but it also shows, and I think points to broader, even outside of yachting, the growing economic impact and the strength of Florida when you look at the country as a whole.

yacht good news 1

And now when you turn your eyes over to the big boat side of things, and for that we look to Boat International. And we look at a year where every record was seemingly smashed. In the year 2021 there was 887 total superyacht transactions. Boat International actually takes the data and reports all the data and collects it all of 24 meters or 80 feet and above.

And a few things that are noteworthy about that. Number 1, that’s a 75% uptake from the previous year. So not only was it one of the best years in total volume, it was also one the best years in terms of giant leaps upward. Also, in the year 2021 there were 2 firms for the first time ever that achieved 100+ superyacht transactions, and I’ll get to who those 2 are in a moment.

yacht good news 1

One of the other exciting thing that happened in the year 2021 was the return of the boat show. As many of you guys know, and we’re going to try to refrain from using the COVID too many times in this video. But because of COVID in the year 2020 there were very few boat shows. Many of them came back in the year 2021. We participated in about 15 of them. But one of the things that I wanted to talk about as we look boat shows returning is not only how that helps overall boat shows but also the economic impact of those boat shows, and those local playgrounds of boating and yachting. So Fort Lauderdale Boat Show just released its data. The 2021 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show actually had an economic impact of $1.79 billion. Which again is just one of those numbers that’s hard to digest and it’s just gigantic.

But, it’s worth diving a little bit deeper into that. That 1.79 billion means the grocery stores, the hotels, the airlines, anything and everything. Any place people would spend money on their visit to Fort Lauderdale. But if you look at the data and you look at the number of direct sales as a result of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is $899 million. Then when you look at it in terms of tax collected, $85 million in sales tax was collected for the state of Florida, and $24.5 million specially for Broward County. So just a taste of how important boat shows are not only to our industry but also to local communities where those boat shows happen.

A lot of people are wondering, “How is the industry so strong? What can we look to?” And I’ve got my own opinions, I look to a lot of other smarter people that have opinions of their own, and I’ve been collecting about 20 different reasons why. I’m going to actually hone in on 3 or 4 of those today without using the word COVID. Actually, I’m going to have to use the word COVID again. That is the number 1 reason.

This COVID effect where you have people that were on the fence before in the year 2020 that decided to do this thing called boating. They decided to do it because of things like social distancing. So that effect is still continuing and it’s not just that new audience. The most encouraging thing for guys like myself is that those people in the year 2020 that bought boats, kept their boat. Or they may have actually upgraded their boat. And the most exciting thing is, the friends that were invited along with that boat ride in the year 2020. Many of them decided to buy a boat themselves.

Number 2 on my list of why’s is the creation of new wealth. So not only looking to the S&P and the Dow and the Nasdaq and you have obvious indicators that things are healthy but there’s also a lot of startups occurring. There’s also a lot of the opposite. There’s also a lot of sales, there’s a lot of these new wealth events that are occurring around us. Not only in the traditional sense but also crypto. There’s people today in the year 2021 that couldn’t afford to buy a yacht yesterday that are now able to do so.

So number 3 I think is an extremely important one, it’s also the most boring one, which is low interest rates. I don’t have the data, it hasn’t been released yet. But there is seemingly, at least from our list of transactions with clients there’s a higher percentage of people that are actually financing their and yacht purchases today because rates are so incredibly low. Now as you know, rates are starting to tick up a little bit here in the US and elsewhere, it’s going to be interesting to see if that does affect the sales overall globally.

And the fourth reason and maybe the hardest to define for the reason that our industry had such a great year, I think, and I hope this is the last time I use the word COVID during this video but COVID did introduce a short fragility of life moment for people. And our industry along with many others benefited from this idea of “I’m not going to be here forever, and I want to have fun now, I want to have meaningful moments with my family”. So, we saw a lot more people opening up their wallets making that investment in life experiences and having the best time ever with the people they love, and that continued to happen in 2021. And I believe, and many people in our industry hope badly that that effect will continue for the next 5, 10, 15 years. So, I have 20 reasons, those are my 4 best, for why our industry had the year ever.

yacht good news 1

And now, I get to talk about the top 5 coolest things, most significant things that I’m most proud of that happened here at Denison Yachting. The first thing is, I referenced it earlier, there were two firms for the first time ever that were responsible for 100+ superyacht transactions. I am excited to tell you that not only are we the first to get to 100 but we ended the year ranked #1 for superyacht transactions. And I’ve got the data, and I just want to share it really quickly.

For the first time ever, two firms, 100+, it was Denison and Fraser. We were responsible for 115 total superyacht transactions, and when you break that down we were happy to represent 62 buyers in superyacht transactions and also 53 transactions where we represented the seller. The cool part about that is it’s the third year in a row. So, 2019 was the first year we ranked #1. 202 of course the second and I’m proud to say 2021 we were able to grab that trophy as well.

Also, number 3, and it very much pertains to the superyacht part of our business. We saw a 65% increase in charter bookings. Not only on the retail side but also growing wholesale charter fleet is something we’re incredibly proud of. I just wanted to tip my hat to that entire team. Not only are they really hard working, they’re nice people, they love what they do. 65% uptick is massive.

yacht good news 1

Number 4, Frank and Gertrude Denison honored by the city of Fort Lauderdale in History Fort Lauderdale . The first ever family to be honored in the industry of yachting here in Fort Lauderdale. It was a big deal to me and my family and that also was kind of connected to the launch of our first ever magazine which was called FRANK . So, a very exciting thing for us as we look back and honor the people that make all this possible.

And finally, number 5 here at Denison Yachting in the year 2021, social media growth. And social media growth means, like everybody says that we’re good. We’re awesome, our team out there across these halls did a great job and we’re the only firm in yachting that achieved top 3. So, we ranked top 3 in the top 3 social media channels of Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. We ended the year on Facebook’s 60,000+ followers. Instagram across all the Denison properties just missed 200,000, we’re at 199,000. YouTube, we were the very very very first firm to reach 200,000 subscribers. We ended the year at 263,000. When you look at that, the video part especially, I think is the backbone of all things social media. We had 46 million people watch our videos last year which is something I’m unbelievably proud of.

So that’s a wrap. The year 2021 here was awesome. 2022 is here. As we look back on the data and the charts and the graphs and all that stuff, it’s really all rotted in a bunch of good people hell-bent on making sure the client experience of buying or selling or chartering or operating a yacht is a really good one. So, the year 2022 is going to be full that, just us being hell bent on making the client experience better. For that, we’re excited and thank you guys very very much for being on this journey with us. Bye!

Oceanis 51.1 Review: Cruising World Magazine

yacht good news 1

Inspiration is not always intuitive. The first model in the seventh (and latest) generation of Beneteau’s Oceanis cruising yachts, the new 51.1, owes its distinctive hull form not to the world of luxury sailboats but to an all-carbon, hard-chined rocket ship, the Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed Rambler 88.

The result is a distinctive, and I think good-looking, change to a product line that’s now entering its third decade. But while Rambler in race mode is a stripped-out shell that requires a full squad of race-hardened deck apes to sail, the creature comforts abound on the 51.1, from its plumb bow to the push-button fold-down swim-platform transom, and by design, it’s a sailboat that’s meant to be cruised by a couple, with occasional friends and family.

Several seasons ago, Beneteau reintroduced chines as a design element, originally in its First line of racer-cruisers, then in several Sense models and more recently in the Oceanis range. The hard-edge look, quickly adopted by a host of other builders, is credited with providing (in varying degrees, depending on whom you talk to) style, form stability and interior volume.

With the 51.1, Beneteau general manager Gianguido Girotti and the designers at Berret Racoupeau have taken the whole chines concept to an extreme — on the 51.1, they literally run from bow to stern — an idea, Girotti says, that came from observing the lines of Rambler, arguably one of the fastest boats in the world.

In theory, carrying the chines the length of the hull allows for a fine entry, decreased wetted surface and greater buoyancy, which translates into a faster and more powerful hull form in the case of Rambler, and not by coincidence, more interior space for luxury living in the 51.1.

yacht good news 1

This is a big boat. The cockpit is the equivalent of what you might find on a 55-footer, says Girotti, and down below, well, just take note that in the forward cabin, besides the separate head and shower compartments and a pair of hanging lockers, the island queen berth has room to walk on either side of it and port and starboard nightstands and couches too!

Stepping aboard to have a look, the first question that came to mind was “How will this boat sail?” It turns out the 51.1 moves along quite well.

In a little more than 10 knots of breeze, the speed on the GPS read 7.4 knots upwind under main and 90 percent self-tacking jib. And it held that pace when we bore off to a reach and rolled out a code zero set on the boat’s composite bowsprit.

“Twin rudder, spins quite fast,” I jotted in my notes as I tacked the boat back and forth a couple of times without lifting even a finger to adjust either the main or jib sheets, both of which were led to winches near the twin wheels.

If I had to gripe about something, it would be the full bimini that covered the cockpit and made it difficult to see the sails, particularly the main. There’s an obvious solution, of course, which would be just to take it down.

The 51.1 comes standard with in-mast furling, the aforementioned self-tacking headsail and a 7-foot-7-inch iron keel. From there, there are options for a 105 percent genoa, code zero, asymmetric spinnaker, shoal keel (6 feet 1 inch) or a Performance package that adds about 5 feet to the standard 70-foot-1-inch mast and includes a deep iron keel (9 feet 2 inches) with a lead bulb.

Beneteau vacuum-infuses its hulls, which, like the decks, are balsa-cored. A layer of vinylester resin protects the hull from blistering. The boat can be ordered either with a German-style double-ended mainsheet system, as on the boat we sailed, or with a cockpit arch on which blocks for the mainsheet are mounted. I’d opt for the former, which gives you better control over sail shape.

For the record, a base boat sells for right around $600,000, but a long list of options — including up to five cabins and three heads, not to mention finishes, fabrics, teak decking, air conditioning and Dock & Go rotating saildrive package — can add considerably to the bill. The boat we sailed carried a price tag of $630,000. It was powered with the optional 110 hp Yanmar, with shaft drive. An 80 hp Yanmar and saildrive are standard.

Wide side decks on the 51.1 are appreciated when moving about. Lower stays are brought inside to the cabin top and outers attach to the hull, which means you don’t have to wiggle around either when heading forward. In the cockpit, there are large cushioned lounging areas to either side of the companionway that would make fine berths with the dodger up at night, or sun beds with it down during the day. I found the cockpit seats to be quite comfortable thanks to the cushioned coamings. They flank a sizable drop-leaf table that has a fridge beneath it forward and room for a life raft in a compartment aft.

Like other recent Beneteaus, the companionway below is more like a staircase, with good handrails to either side. The boat we sailed was fitted with two aft cabins, each with hanging lockers and their own head and shower.

A well-equipped galley is forward to port, followed by what the builder calls the “owners area” — essentially a combination nav station and desk with an interesting seat that morphs into an athwartships recliner. Opposite all of this is a gigantic table surrounded by U-shaped seating that, all told, will seat 14.

The boat shown last fall at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, had brushed-oak woodwork offset by white fabric-covered panels. Ports in the hull and cabin top let in loads of light, and overhead hatches promised good ventilation in the owners cabin and saloon.

Abovedecks and below, the 51.1 offers multiple spaces for enjoying days and nights on the water, which is right in line with all the other models in the time-tested Oceanis range.

by Lori Lakin Hutcherson ( @lakinhutcherson )

As we sail away from summer into the (hopefully) cooler climes of autumn, a playlist filled with Yacht Soul might just be the perfect accompaniment to those post-Labor Day outdoor gatherings.

In case you’re thinking, “Sounds fun, but what exactly is ‘Yacht Soul’?,” it’s the supercool, sophisticated sibling of the “Yacht Rock” genre , a term coined fifteen years ago to describe 1970s and 1980s adult-oriented rock music infused with jazz and R&B recorded primarily in California by acts such as Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Toto, Kenny Loggins and Christopher Cross.

“Yacht Soul” heightens the soul, R&B and jazz elements of the music while dropping a dollop of funk in the mix.

The following quotes from  soultracks.com  perhaps illuminate the distinctions best:

… Donald Cleveland says that we have Yacht Soul question entirely backwards. “ To be honest, Yacht Rock should have been called Yacht Soul from the start. Anybody with ears knows that. The only thing ‘rock’ about Yacht is the label that was on the albums as originally released, so they could be filed separately from the ‘Soul’ albums. It was just easier for the White people listening to this music with obvious soulful stylings to just keep the White ‘rock’ labeling going, even if the musicians themselves were influenced by and working from a framework of Black Soul .” Mama’s Gun lead singer Andy Platts agrees. “ Really if we’re honest, you don’t get ‘Yacht Rock’ without the evolution of Black music in the first place, from which it borrows heavily, so perhaps this just underscores the issues with appropriating and using terms like the ‘yacht’ label .”

Songs like  “Just The Two of Us” by Grover Washington, Jr. and Bill Withers , “Forget Me Nots” by Patrice Rushen , “Give Me The Night” by George Benson , “Rio De Janiero Blue” by Randy Crawford and Joe Sample and  “Golden Time of Day” by Maze  are strong examples of the style.

yacht good news 1

Many Yacht Soul classics were produced by music legend Quincy Jones , who guided Patti Austin , James Ingram , and  Michael Jackson  through unforgettable tunes such as “The Heat of Heat,” “Ai No Corrida,” “One Hundred Ways,” “It’s The Falling In Love,” “I Can’t Help It , “  and “Human Nature .”

Artists such as Al Jarreau, Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack, Keni Burke, Brenda Russell, Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan and Sade also swim in the deep seas of Yacht Soul, which came to be known as “urban contemporary” by the late 1980s and 1990s.

I want to highlight a personal favorite from this era – Jermaine Jackson ‘s Top 20 R&B hit “You Like Me Don’t You” from his 1980 album Jermaine , written and produced by Jermaine and featuring a heart-melting harmonica solo from Stevie Wonder . The this mid-tempo cut still low key slaps. Hard.

You’ll notice some white artists in the Yacht Soul waters – many who charted as well or higher on the R&B charts than the Hot 100 with singles such as  “Georgy Porgy”  by Toto (featuring vocals by Cheryl Lynn ), “What You Won’t Do For Love” by Bobby Caldwell and “The Lowdown” by Boz Skaggs .

Yacht Soul songs have also provided ample sample material for hip hop producers from the 1990s to present day — like  Will Smith ‘s use of “Forget Me Nots” as the backbone to his 1997 hit “Men in Black” and “I Keep Forgettin” as the driving groove of 1994’s “Regulate” by Warren G . — but there’s nothing like the original jams!

We truly hope you enjoy this compilation.

My favorite GBN mix yet. This is the perfect equivalent to a 3 or 4 CD boxed set of Yacht Soul, a compilation I didn’t even know I needed. Now if only it would come out on vinyl!

Billions TV Show Yacht ‘The Good Life’ Available To Rent

By Oliver Pearson   7 June 2016

Earlier this year, the popular Showtime series ‘Billions’ wowed audiences with Damian Lewis boarding an impressive luxury yacht aptly named ‘The Good Life’. Having carried out some careful research, we can now reveal the true identity of the yacht, and how you can enjoy her on your own luxury yacht charter vacation .

Starring Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis, ‘Billions’ follows the life of a high flying hedge fund manager keen to live a lifestyle which best befits his generous salary and lucrative deals.

Named after the yacht itself, ‘The Good Life’ is the fifth episode and centres around Axe (Damian Lewis) setting out to fully enjoying the fruits of his labour.

Naturally, after spending some quality time in his pool and about his suitably large house, he decides to have a custom-built superyacht made for himself and his wife.

Arriving by tender -a customary approach when it comes to boarding larger motor yachts - Axe marvels at his bespoke creation from a distance before going on to enjoy its many impressive features.

Whilst in this sense ‘Billions’ does a great job of showing just how exciting superyachts can be,  it should be pointed out that the luxury yacht isn’t really called ‘The Good Life’, and she isn’t really the preserve of a single billionaire, but is in fact available for vacations in the Bahamas and Miami  this summer.

As well as entertaining American audiences on Showtime, Billions also accrued a strong British following when it premiered on Sky Atlantic earlier this year.

With a second series now confirmed, the web has been ablaze with fans discussing the luxurious lifestyle which is at the center of the show.

No doubt one of the greatest attractions and conversation points, however, was Axe’s yacht, and how it’s possible to rent one for a vacation.

So, without further ado, we can now reveal the name of the superyacht in ‘Billions’ as well as how much it costs to rent.

Of course, what all this confirms, is that by taking a luxury yacht charter vacation, you don’t have to be a billionaire to live like one.

A profile shot of the superyacht 'Carpe Diem II'

Delivered in 2002 and refit in 2011, the true identity of the yacht featured in ‘Billions’ is the 46m/150ft motor yacht ‘Carpe Diem II’ .

The product of an award-winning American shipyard, Carpe Diem II was built by Trinity Yachts and bears a distinctly sleek profile- just the look for a high flying lawyer keen to indulge the good life.

As well as a range of elegantly designed social spaces, the yacht also includes comfortable accommodation for up to 10 guests across 5 well-appointed staterooms.

To rent Carpe Diem II, weekly rates begin at $165,000 + expenses in both the summer and the winter.

For a full tour around Carpe Diem II, take a look at our feature which goes inside Axe's superyacht .
