Befoil 16 Sport, This Flying Catamaran Is Totally Modular

befoil 16 sport flying catamaran

Befoil launched its new flying catamaran, the Befoil 16 Sport, designed by a renowned firm of naval architects, VPLP. Based in Lorient, Brittany, since 2017, Befoil is a boat manufacturer building foiling boats. The manufacturing of the Befoil 16 Sport is entirely Made in Europe.

Following on from the Befoil 16 RT in 2019, this new sportier, lighter, epoxy/glass fibre composite version, ensures the maximum amount of fun on the water. Thanks to its trapezes, its two self-regulating T-foils and its two lifting rudders, this model takes off in upwards of 8 knots of breeze.

This new model is totally modular and can be immediately adapted to the level of all users thanks to avariety of kits, which can be installed or removed at any time: from the classic sports catamaran to the ultimate sports version, it’s the same boat which can be transformed to suit your wishes.

Whether it’s forfamily sailing in complete safety, racing in the F16 class, learning how to helm a foiler, a thrilling ‘magic carpet’ ride, or a pure adrenalin rush whilst training out on the wire of a foiler, there is just a single solution: the Befoil 16 Sport!

Benjamin MAGNARD, president of Befoil, explains: “ My dream was to enable everyone to fly across the water! Thanks to the Befoil 16 Sport, fans of dinghy sailing – whatever their level – will be able to take off, in light airs and enjoy thrilling new sensations out on the water, coloured by fun and speed, like a ride on a magic carpet! Fully modular, the Befoil 16 Sport is truly groundbreaking, enabling a switch from one version to the next in under 5 minutes. ”

Test / Setting up the Befoil 16 Sport: A simplified approach to boat flying

Flight on board the Befoil 16 Sport

Before tasting the pleasure of flying a foiler, we helped prepare the Befoil 16 Sport before its launch. This was an opportunity to understand how the settings work and to appreciate the technical choices made to make them as easy to understand as possible.

Briag Merlet

The heart of the Befoil 16 Sport In this section, we look at the assembly of the catamaran's appendages, foils and rudders, and their adjustment.

Foils permanently installed for the season

Our test sail marked the beginning of the season, and the Befoil 16 Sport was waiting for us on the quay of the Kerguelen sailing club in Lorient without its foils. This was the opportunity to test the assembly of the appendages on the catamaran . While one person was placed under each hull to lift it by the front until the boat was tilted at 45°, a third person was in charge of threading the foil in its well. The weight of the boat makes it difficult for two people to handle, which is unfortunate for a catamaran designed for double-handed sailing, but the choice of aluminum makes it easy to leave the foils on the platform all season. Finding a charitable soul twice a year seems feasible.

Le Befoil 16 Sport peut être stocké en extérieur avec ses foils

Limited settings to keep it simple

With the appendages in place, it's time to focus on the trimming. "We chose to limit the number of adjustments so that the boat remains accessible. The idea was to keep only the most useful ones and to remove all those that could prevent the boat from flying or be dangerous if they are wrong" summarizes Charles de Lisle, Befoil's technical manager.

L'incidence du safran et de son plan porteur est réglé à terre

When sailing, only two main adjustments are possible: the incidence of the foils, by adjusting the upper hold of the appendage, and the height of the floats on each hull. The former sets the lift of the foils at a given speed , while the differential between the height of the floats defines a sort of target heel. When the windward sensor no longer touches the water, the foil flap reverses, creating a downward force and adding to the boat's stability . In addition to these two settings, the rudder incidence can be set before the start, and is fixed for the duration of the sailing.

At the time of purchase, owners are provided with a "tuning guide". The booklet explains the influence of the major adjustments, appendages, but also the rigging. Answers are also proposed to solve the "problems" encountered while sailing. "In reality, there are two types of people, those who want to understand and those for whom it is simply magic to fly a boat" smiles Charles de Lisle.

L'angle d'incidence du foil se règle uniquement par le déplacement de la cale haute de l'appendice

Focus on safety

The choice of the foils' surface distribution was also determined by the accessibility of the flight. Part of the lift was kept on the horizontal planes of the rudders. "In the event of a stall, the boat rises and does not risk diving, unlike other boats. This simplifies navigation and is safer for a beginner" explains the technical manager. We'll have the opportunity to see it in action!

Construction of the Befoil 16 Sport: Robust but high performance materials

Two hulls - three ways to fly on the Befoil 16

Two hulls - three ways to fly on the Befoil 16

Two hulls – three ways to fly on the Befoil 16

Originally imagined by Benjamin Magnard aiming to create a hydrofoiling, off-the-beach catamaran equipped with a tilting mast, Befoil was born.

Specifications were drawn up in collaboration with VPLP, a naval architecture firm whose reputation is well established, to create a hydrofoil catamaran easy to use and accessible to all. The Befoil 16 is a 16 foot hydrofoil catamaran designed for lovers of exciting sensations, which is easy to handle.

A large surface area and stability allows safe navigation over water, with its high-quality construction thanks to the infusion manufacturing process. The Befoil 16 Sport is lighter, stiffer and more canvasy, for performance on the water.

Intended for private individuals and sailing schools, this hydrofoil catamaran adapts to all sailing programs, to learn how to fly on the water easily. With its self-regulating T-foils and two load-bearing rudders and glass/epoxy hulls, the Befoil 16 Sport is the latest addition to the Befoil series.

In trapeze sport mode, or in comfort mode with the optional ladders, the Befoil 16 Sport provides a great feeling of speed. The boat takes off from eight knots and can reach up to 20 knots. The first ten owners were very satisfied and found in this Befoil 16 Sport all the expectations of a flying catamaran.

Befoil 16, the flying catamaran targets sailing schools

BeFoil 16, a flying catamaran for sailing schools

Befoil wants to make beginner boaters fly. Alan Le Calvez, project manager, explains to BoatIndustry the characteristics of the project and its adaptation to the sailing school market.

Briag Merlet

A hydrofoil catamaran for sailing schools

Befoil presented its hydrofoil sports catamaran for the first time during the autumn boat shows. It is a 16-foot flying multihull designed to introduce these new sensations to an uninformed public. "Our first public is sailing schools for foil initiation," explains Alan Le Calvez, project manager at BeFoil - Magnard Innovation. "The boat is designed for classic course formats, without having to take private lessons. It's a school specification: 16 feet, double, for teenagers or adults."

catamaran befoil 16

Accessible materials and options

To make the boat easier and safer, the BeFoil team focused on materials and equipment. The hulls of the standard sailboats will be made of rotomoulded thermoplastic, more affordable and less fragile than the classic composite in a sailing school use. "In addition, they will be lighter than those of the prototype that we had voluntarily reinforced," says Alan Le Calvez. The mainsail can be used to soften the boat if necessary and abseiling ladders have been preferred to trapezoids to make sailing easier for beginners. Finally, the beams and appendages, foils and rudders, are made of aluminium. "We wanted to be accessible technologically and in terms of price," explains Alan Le Calvez, "and we will also offer a kit with classic rudders and daggerboards to use the BeFoil as a classic multihull. This will avoid a double investment in sailing schools."

catamaran befoil 16

A sailboat Made In France

The prototype was presented at the start of the 2018 school year. BeFoil plans to launch the first production catamarans in the first quarter of 2019. They will be assembled in Lorient . The parts will be produced in France. The dies for the construction of aluminum appendages are located at Hydro Extrusion in Chateauroux.

catamaran befoil 16

A product in the spirit of the times

While all regattas, whether dinghy, America's Cup or ocean racing, are being held on flying boats, the general public also wants to take off. Finding the right support, affordable financially and technically, is a challenge for manufacturers and an expectation of sailing schools. The Glénans and the UCPA already offer courses on hydrofoil sailing boats, from moth to RS Aero. In the catamaran segment, several competitors are positioning themselves, from Flying Phantom to iFly15. Who will be able to conquer the market, while remaining affordable?
