Riverboat cruises to make their return to Vicksburg

Published 10:30 am Tuesday, March 9, 2021

The American Duchess was the last riverboat to visit Vicksburg before cruises along the Mississippi were shuttered due to the pandemic in 2020. She will be the first riverboat to arrive in Vicksburg as river cruises — and some portions of life — return to some sense of normalcy.

The Vicksburg Post has confirmed that the Duchess, part of the American Queen Steamboat Company’s livery of ships, will return to Vicksburg on March 19. The ship is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. and depart at 5 p.m. The Duchess will return to Vicksburg on May 24.

Both of the Duchess’ arrivals are chartered trips and not regular cruises. Also, the company has said that the hop-on and hop-off tours that were part of their visits are not scheduled for at least these first two visits. But, passengers will take part in a no-contact tour of the Vicksburg National Military Park.

American Cruise Lines will return on March 25, when the American Jazz docks at 8 a.m. It is scheduled to depart at 5:30 p.m. The company has said the first cruise will only include 29 passengers and that future cruises are being limited to just 50 passengers.  It also reported the visit will include only one planned excursion, a no-contact tour of the military park.

American Cruise Lines, in the information provided to the VCVB, did say a majority of those taking part in the first cruise have received the COVID-19 vaccine. American Queen Steamboat Company said that beginning July 1, anyone boarding a cruise must have had the vaccine.

Also, when passengers arrive in Vicksburg, they will be required to abide by local COVID-19 protocols and civil emergency orders.

According to an updated report by the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, 164 dockings were canceled in 2020 due to the cruise industry’s shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Already in 2021, the city has missed out on 12 scheduled arrivals.

In 2019, the last full year of arrivals, Vicksburg welcomed 131 visits from riverboats, which delivered 26,158 passengers to the city’s riverfront. The impact of those visitors resulted in $1.98 million for the local economy. Last year, given the increased number of scheduled dockings (181), local tourism and business officials were excited about what the economic impact would be.

Unfortunately, with the cruise industry shuttered, many downtown businesses and tourist destinations suffered significant impacts on their business.

In data from the VCVB, the Vicksburg National Military Park, a popular destination for riverboat passengers, saw a 68.2 percent decrease in visitors in 2020 compared to 2019. The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum saw a drop of more than 66 percent.

In the report provided, the destination that saw the biggest decline in visitors in 2020 compared to the year before was the Old Court House Museum. In 2019, the museum reported 28,943 visitors, while just 6,914 guests came through the iconic downtown museum in 2020 — a decrease of more than 76 percent.

Your Itinerary

1 New Orleans, LA Embark your ship and settle into your stateroom. The birthplace of American jazz, New Orleans exudes a festive atmosphere along the balcony-lined Bourbon Street. Here, in the heart of the French Quarter, soulful rhythms lift the spirit, especially during the city’s Mardi Gras celebration. Founded by French colonists in 1718, New Orleans served as a territorial capital before the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Its distinctive St. Louis Cathedral—named for King Louis IX of France—is the oldest cathedral in the country. The city’s French, African and other influences flavor its vibrant culture and tantalizing Creole cuisine.

2 Darrow, LA The Lower Mississippi region is dotted with historic mansions; Darrow is the gateway to these grand homes, meticulously kept to preserve the memory of early Southern American history. Here, imposing houses share the riverscape with moss-draped oak trees and farm fields. It is easy to imagine steamboats and other vessels delivering supplies and materials to these stately front doors. Today, several properties are designated National Historic Landmarks for their architecture, their landscaping, and the contributions of those who maintained the houses and the lands.

3 St. Francisville, LA Boasting more than 140 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Francisville is set along one of the most historic bluffs of the Mississippi. The town is said to be “two miles long and two yards wide” because it was originally built on a narrow ridge overlooking the river. Founded in 1809, it is the oldest town in Louisiana’s Florida Parishes. Remarkably, many of St. Francisville’s structures are not its own; rather, they were moved upriver from Bayou Sara in the 1920s after the small settlement was destroyed by years of flooding.

4 Natchez, MS Natchez has one of the highest concentrations of historic Southern estates in the country. More than 200 perfectly preserved homes line its avenues. It is the oldest city on the Mississippi, established in 1716 by French colonists and named for the Natchez tribe who once called it home. With its ideal locale, the city became a crossroads among Native American and European cultures. Famously, Natchez was the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace, the overland route to Nashville that allowed traders to bypass the strong upriver currents. Today, it evokes small-town America.

5 Vicksburg, MS Located on a high bluff where the Yazoo River flows into the Mississippi, Vicksburg is the epitome of Southern heritage and charm. It was incorporated in 1825 and, with its prime locale on the Mississippi, grew into an important port. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln called it “the key to the South.” And it indeed proved to be the site of the conflict’s most pivotal battle, the Battle of Vicksburg, after which the Confederates surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. The Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the battle site’s rolling green fields and grand monuments.

6 Greenville, MS Greenville is Mississippi’s largest river port, set atop the highest point along the Mississippi River between Vicksburg and Memphis. Its rural setting belies a diverse artistic heritage. The Muppets creator Jim Henson was born here, and the city has been home to numerous authors, including noted historian Shelby Foote. Greenville is also steeped in the blues; famed songwriter W.C. Handy was inspired to popularize the genre after seeing pioneering musician Prince McCoy perform at a nearby dancehall and neighboring Indianola was the hometown of the legendary B.B. King.

7 Scenic Sailing: Lower Mississippi Teeming with a wide variety of birdlife and a breathtaking array of picturesque landscapes—including deep-green forests, lush wetlands and a patchwork of fertile farmlands—the Lower Mississippi abounds with natural beauty. This portion of America’s great waterway is also rich in history and culture, as reflected in the classic literature and music that have drawn inspiration from it.

8 Memphis, TN Situated on the Chickasaw bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Memphis is revered for its blues music and barbecue. Some of the most famed names in blues, including B.B. King, got their start in Memphis, and the city has a well-deserved reputation as the home of this classic American music genre. Memphis is also celebrated for its culinary heritage and is renowned for its traditional barbecue restaurants serving flavorful dry rub ribs. Rich in history and culture, Memphis’s many notable museums include the National Civil Rights Museum and Elvis Presley’s Graceland. After breakfast, disembark your ship and journey home.

Viking Mississippi Wiki

In 2015 was officially announced Viking's plan to enter USA's river cruising market by chartering newbuild ships for year-round operations on Mississippi River. However, the process was slowed due to issues regarding the so-called "Jones Act" (Merchant Marine Act from 1920). It imposes restrictions on where USA-based ships can navigate and how to be staffed.

In October 2018 was announced as a potential start-up (with Mississippi-based boats) the year 2021. By 2027, Viking plans to increase its annual passenger river shipping capacity to 100,000+ (compared to 2018's 50,600) by deploying six Viking riverboats in the USA. The 7-night/8-day itineraries include roundtrips from New Orleans , as well as one-ways between New Orleans and Memphis TN , and between St Louis MO and Minneapolis-Saint Paul MN .

Viking Mississippi was constructed at the Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) Shipyards-owned company LaShip Shipyard (Houma, Louisiana USA). Due to strong demand, bookings for Viking's 2023-2024 itinerary program opened on July 2, 2020. Viking's Mississippi River year-round deployment is expected to bring 7500+ passengers in 2022 and 17600+ tourists during the full 2023 season.

Viking River Cruises USA ship

Viking Mississippi was launched/floated out from drydock on March 7, 2022. The ceremony was led by godmother/madrina Dionne Chouest (Edison Chouest Offshore's General Counsel).

Welcome to New Orleans

The Higgins Hotel - New Orleans, LA

Your driver will await you at the airport to chauffeur you to the Higgins Hotel , named for Andrew Higgins whose company invented and then produced more than 20,000 shallow-draft ‘swamp boats’ that were critical to the success of the Normandy Landings on D-Day. Attached to the National Word War II Museum, this modern hotel in a restored building carries forward the Art Deco atmosphere of the 1940’s. There’s time to explore the French Quarter, enjoy the unique cuisine of the city or tour the museum. Should you wish more time on your own in New Orleans, we’re pleased to book extra nights at the Higgins for you.

See The Big Easy + Embark the American Countess

American Countess

Following breakfast, we’ll check-out and gather your luggage before departing on a guided tour of New Orleans to explore some of its neighborhoods, the storied French Quarter, St. Louis Cemetery, Jackson Square and City Park. After sightseeing we’ll head to the pier where the elegant American Countess awaits. Settle in to your spacious outside stateroom as we begin our voyage up the Mississippi. With flexible open seating in the dining room throughout the cruise, enjoy the ship’s fine dining anytime between 5 and 8pm enhanced with complimentary house wine and spirits. Of course, the open bar is always at your disposal. Meals B+D

Deep into a Bayou + Nottoway Plantation

After an extensive breakfast, we’ll wind our way along historic River Road to La Place, deep in the heart of Louisiana plantation country, while our expert guide offers colorful insight and historic anecdotes about the region when cotton and sugar were king. Arriving at the edge of the Manchac Bayou, we’ll meet our resident Cajun Captain who’ll guide us in his boat deep into these wetlands – where lush vegetation and moss-draped cypress provide prime habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. American alligators, nutria, ibis, herons and egrets are some of the species we might encounter. Following lunch back on-board, we’ll experience a bit of antebellum life. Surrounded by manicured gardens, Nottoway is a historic 3-story residence with grand, columned verandahs and a lavishly decorated interior including the White Ballroom, entirely white with gold gilding. The White Castle of Louisiana is the perfect example of plantation life of that pre-Civil War era. Returning to the ship in the late afternoon, there will be time to relax before dinner is served. Meals B+L+D

The Charm of St. Francisville

On a bluff overlooking the Mississippi, this lovely town has a colorful early history as the oldest in what are known as Louisiana’s Florida Parishes. In 1810, an adventurer fought off the Spanish to control a group of parishes on the East Bank of the river and designated them the Republic of West Florida. Although the Republic didn’t last long, the identity of the Florida Parishes has persisted to this day. Settled initially as Bayou Sara, floods and fires destroyed the settlement and the hearty residents simply hauled their surviving homes up the bluff to establish themselves anew as the town of St. Francisville. With hop-on, hop-off touring, we’ll explore this historic town with 140 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Admire the homes along Royal Street and stroll the Old Market Hall, established in 1819. The West Feliciana Historical Society Museum and Grace Episcopal Church are other notable highlights. Meals B+L+D

Natchez, Mississippi

After breakfast on-board, our guests will enjoy a guided visit to The Towers, one of the most elegant private homes in this historically rich town, the oldest along the entire Mississippi. Restored recently by Ginger and James Hyland, they will personally accompany our visit as they present the history, architecture and extensive collections of antiques and fabrics that fill the residence. In the afternoon, following lunch on The Countess, we’ll enjoy independent hop-on, hop-off sightseeing with extensive opportunities to explore antebellum life. Among the stops and places you can explore at your own pace are the Rosalie Mansion, built in 1823, and the remarkable William Johnson House Museum. Mr. Johnson was born a slave who gained his freedom at the age of eleven and built this 3-story brick home during his career as the town’s barber. Both Magnolia Hall and Stanton Hall are other Greek Revival architectural gems to include in your visit. A great place to cap the afternoon is the Museum of African-American History and Culture covering the 300 years of the struggle for equality in the environs of Natchez. Meals B+L+D

Vicksburg, Mississippi

Abraham Lincoln wrote to his commanders early in 1863 “… see what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in your pocket.” Thus began one of the most consequential campaigns of the Civil War for control of the entire length of the Mississippi. Waged over the course of more than three months in the spring and summer of that year, the terrible Siege of Vicksburg gained the Union success albeit with tremendous losses on both sides. The rich character of the city remains, however, as our hop-on, hop-off independent touring will reveal this morning. The stained-glass windows of the Church of the Holy Trinity, built after the war in 1869, are magnificent. Built in 1830, the nearby Anchuca Mansion was the war hospital during the Siege and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The antebellum 1858 Old Court House, the Lower Mississippi Museum and Old Depot Museum are interesting inclusions this morning. Surprisingly, the first bottles of Coca-Cola in the world were filled in 1894 at the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, a fun addition to your ramblings in Vicksburg. Following lunch on-board, our guests will depart for a guided excursion to the picturesque Vicksburg National Military Park where we’ll learn the riveting stories of what soldiers endured over the three months of battle to capture the city. The National Military Park houses 27 major monuments erected since 1903 to commemorate all the states that lost soldiers during the Siege, including one that honors the Union’s Mississippi Black Infantry. We’ll visit the Illinois State Monument which ranks among the many here as America’s most impressive military memorials. Before returning to ship, we’ll also visit the USS Cairo, an iron clad river boat that was commissioned in 1862 and raised from the river bottom in 1964. Meals B+L+D

Greenville, Mississippi + BB King

Today, we’ll arrive in Greenville in the late morning. Following lunch, we’ll depart The Countess for our included guided excursion to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in neighboring Indianola, Mississippi. Dedicated to its native son, our guided tour of this wonderful museum documents B.B. King’s life and presents his key role in introducing the Blues to the world. We’ll finish this memorable afternoon at the Club Ebony, a musical venue that hosted greats like Albert King, Ray Charles and, of course, B.B. King. Meals B+L+D

Cruising North on the Mississippi

Take this day to relax and enjoy the passing scenery as it shifts from bucolic countryside to small, lively river towns. Enriching on-board talks, an Open Bar, elegant dining with wine, and a chance to engage with your fellow passengers highlight this pleasant day on the river and aboard a beautiful ship. Meals B+L+D

Memphis + Elvis

Following breakfast, we’ll gather our luggage and disembark by coach for a guided trip through the city. We’ll walk along famous Beale Street following the footsteps of iconic musicians before a fully-guided tour of Graceland. For those who wish to spend more time in Memphis, we can provide extra nights at The Peabody or we will transfer you to Memphis International Airport for your onward journey. Meals B

A Volga river cruise is more than a geographical voyage; it’s also a journey through Russia’s rich and captivating history. No other experience takes you so completely to another place and time. The Volga is Europe’s longest and largest river; it meanders through the stories of Ivan the Terrible and his rise to power, the two historic ‘Greats’ Peter and Catherine, and then on into today. It’s a unique opportunity to see modern Russia in the context of its intriguing history, ably assisted by friendly and professional academics and tour guides. A Volga Dream Russian river tour promises to leave you with an unforgettable afterglow of fond memories.

St. Petersburg. Petehof

Moscow to St. Petersburg River Cruise

Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia’s best-known cities, but the towns of Russia’s historic Golden Ring are delightful too. The luxurious Volga Dream offers a unique opportunity to visit these Russian gems by sailing gently along the Volga River on an unforgettable cruising experience. In small, exclusive groups you’ll enjoy preferential access to some of Russia’s most significant cultural sites.

Volgogard. Mamaev Hill

Moscow to Astrakhan River Cruise

Your River Cruise on the luxurious MS Volga Dream takes you from Moscow along Russia’s grand Volga River to the legend that is Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) and Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. Along the way, you’ll discover the treasures of Yaroslavl, the oldest city on the Volga, medieval Nizhniy Novgorod and beautiful Kazan, the ancient Tatar capital. We plan our tour carefully to combine the very best of Moscow with a world-class Volga River cruise.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
