PUDUCHERRY:  In order to attract more tourists, especially those interested in alcohol consumption, Puducherry is all set to introduce Hop on Brewery Tour Bus alias Beer Bus, which is a one-day packaged round trip from Chennai to Puducherry on weekends. The trip, initiated by Catamaran Brewing Company, will have its inaugural run on April 22, Saturday.

The company will provide a guided tour of their microbrewery with beer tasting followed by 120 minutes of service of bottomless beer of choice and a sumptuous three-course meal, said Rangaraju Narayanasamy, partner of the company. The set of tourists will also be taken to one or two popular destinations of the union territory based on their choice.

The bus will operate on Saturdays and Sundays. The group will be picked up at 10.30 am from a point at Chennai and will be dropped back at 9 pm latest. No beer will be served on the bus as government rules do not permit it. It will be served at the brewery in Puducherry, he added, clarifying a dispelling misconception that came up when the company posted about the Beer Bus initiative on Instagram. The company has tied up with a luxury bus operator to transport the 35-40 tourists as a group in an air-conditioned Volvo bus.

“IT professionals and MNC employees are the major target groups for the initiative. We decided to come up with such a package as a few approached us for it," said Rangaraju. The company has fixed separate rates for beer fans, teetotallers, and children accompanying adults. “Catamaran also serves special mocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and food," he added. Based on the response, the trips may be extended to holidays and midweek. Running from other cities like Bengaluru is also under consideration, he said.

catamaran brewing company beer bus

Gear up for a one of a kind experience specially curated for beer enthusiasts, as a beer bus is set to take over the streets of Pondicherry . The coastal city makes for an ideal location for casual sight-seeing where travellers can enjoy the french architecture and influence. The union territory’s first microbrewery , Catamaran Brewing Co. is arranging this tour starting from Chennai and travelling all the way to Pondicherry on the 22nd of April 2023.

The round trip will include a three course meal and return the same day additionally people onboard will be able to enjoy unlimited craft beer . The twelve hour journey will include a tour of the brewery and provide a safe and enjoyable experience . Beer buses are pretty uncommon in India due to many stringent laws, however the Catamaran Brewing Co. have found a way to provide a fulfilling experience withoutbreaking any laws.

The founder of the brewery previously shared with The Hindu, how the entire experience was inspired by a customer who made a playful suggestion for a transport service from Chennai to Pondicherry where one can bond with friends over beer. Catamaran launched in 2021 serving four different varieties of beer — Indian summer, a Belgian-style wheat beer, Chingari cider, an apple cider, Vox Populi, a dark lager, and Pondypils, a pilsner.

The trip is also seeking to be educational, as brewers will explain to visitors how a grain is transformed into beer. At the brewery a gourmet experience awaits the travellers, delving into the intricacies of beer while pairing it with the finest foods.

You can find more information about the beer bus here .

Visitors to Puducherry can find alcoholic beverages from various Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, and countries like France, Italy, Germany, and Japan

Union Territory of Puducherry is gearing up to introduce the Hop on Brewery Tour Bus, a one-day round trip from Chennai to Puducherry on weekends, to attract more visitors, particularly those interested in exploring local alcoholic beverages.

The inaugural journey, organized by Catamaran Brewing Company, is scheduled for April 22.

Puducherry, a popular tourist destination in South India, boasts a distinctive urban architectural style. The former French colony is well-known for its affordable alcohol compared to other states.

Visitors to Puducherry can find alcoholic beverages from various Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, and countries like France, Italy, Germany, and Japan.

Catamaran Brewing Company, established in 2021, operates a small-scale brewery in the city center. Customers can choose from over eight different types of beer, all reportedly made without chemicals, using ingredients such as wheat, barley, guava, cashew, mango, jackfruit, Seeraga Samba rice, conch flower, hibiscus flower, coriander leaves, and Nannari juice.

The complete package, including beer and food, is priced at Rs 3,000, according to Catamaran.

Rangaraj Narayanasamy, a business partner, stated that the company will offer a guided tour of their microbrewery, followed by two hours of unlimited beer service and a sumptuous three-course meal.

Depending on their interests, tourists will also visit one or more renowned Puducherry Union Territory attractions before arriving at Catamaran, where they can see “live beer production” and sample it alongside traditional cuisine.

The bus will operate on Saturdays and Sundays, departing from a location in Chennai around 10:30 am and returning no later than 9:00 pm.

Sources clarified that beer will not be served on the bus, as doing so would violate the law, addressing a misconception that arose after the company promoted the “Beer Bus” initiative on social media. The beverage will be available at the Puducherry brewery. The company has partnered with a luxury bus provider to charter an air-conditioned Volvo bus, accommodating over 35 tourists per group.

The primary target audience for the initiative reportedly includes IT professionals and MNC employees. Catamaran has established different pricing tiers for beer drinkers, abstainers, and children accompanying an adult.

“Catamaran also offers speciality mocktails, food, and non-alcoholic beverages,” Rangaraj noted. He added that Catamaran plans to expand the tour to cover more major cities and might extend operations to include holidays and midweek dates, depending on demand.

Puducherry microbrewery to flag off beer bus from chennai but no cheers on board.

catamaran brewing company beer bus

By: Shubham Ghosh

For those in the southern Indian city of Chennai who regularly head for Puducherry (a former French colony in the south, also called Pondicherry) to enjoy sea, sun and chilled beer, there is yet another reason to make them excited.

Catamaran Brewing Co, the first microbrewery of Puducherry, is set to flag off a beer bus connecting the Union Territory with Chennai, the capital of the adjacent southern state of Tamil Nadu, the Hindu BuisnessLine reported.

The first-of-its-kind beer bus will make its first trip on Saturday (22) and will take people to enjoy a three-course meal, unlimited craft beers and a tour of the brewery, the report said. The price has been kept at Rs 3,000 (£29.35) per person.

However, unlike what many social posts are claiming, the beer will not be provided in the bus and only after seeing the response for the opening trip, the company plans to make it a regular thing.

The founder of Catamaran Brewing Co., Prasad Radhakrishnan, said the idea first came up when a customer jokingly asked for a transport service as it would be safer for tipsy visitors who drive from Chennai to Puducherry to taste the beer which is cheaper.

“The idea is to transport people safely from Chennai to Puducherry, make them experience the nuances of craft beer, and drop them back to Chennai safely on the same day. It’s a good way for groups to come in,” he was quoted as saying by The Hindu BusinessLine .

The report also added that last week, the company published a promotional flier for the “beer bus” and it became viral on social media in no time.

Even Radhakrishnan was surprised by the heavy response saying that they had not expected it.

“Some people are even asking us to operate the bus on a regular basis,” he told the news outlet laughing.

It was in 2017 when Radhakrishnan started working on the Catamaran Brewing Co. project with his business partner Rangaraju Narayanaswamy. The researched on breweries, looked for places, worked on a brewery licence, and also arranged funds form trusted sources such as family and friends, The Hindu BusinessLine reported.

But things got delayed even after they got the licence in 2019 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The company was eventually launched in September 2021.

Catamaran Brewing Co. offers craft beer in nine varieties, including among others, Indian Summer (a Belgian Witbier), Hopsunami (an Indian Pale Ale), Chingari Cider (a dry apple cider), and Vox Populi (a dark lager).

Radhakrishnan said craft beers are meant to be savoured and not binged upon like commercial beers.

He also said the beer trip is also educational, as brewers will help visitors understand how a grain is transformed into beer. The travellers will also see how beer goes with some of the finest food items.

Radhakrishnan, however, was particular saying that no beer will be served on the bus.

“We are going to have a zero-tolerance policy and no alcohol will be served in the bus. Passengers who disturb others will be dropped off at the nearest bus stop,” he told the news outlet.

Tula Kremlin Russia

Tula, Russia: Land of Gingerbread, Samovars and Tolstoy

Slavic Travels Uncategorized

Fall was always my favorite season growing up.

Something about the air turning crisper, the weather getting colder. The leaves turning yellow and brown and orange. And of course Halloween.

It’s that back-to-school weather that any person growing up in the United States loves.

So it was a special treat to be able to experience what fall was like in a different country on a different continent, in a country so unknown in the west. To experience fall in Russia.

Maybe it’s because the season is so short here, but autumn in Russia is truly special.

For starters, it only lasts one month. Fall rolls in during the second half of September and ends in the first half of October. After that winter is already in the air.

But during that brief four-week period, when the country transitions from summer to winter, the Russian countryside explodes into the most beautiful mosaic of red and orange and brown and yellow.

They call it ‘zolotaja osenj’ here, or ‘golden fall.’

It was during this time of year I decided to head outside of Moscow and visit Tula, a city located three hours south of Moscow.

The year was 2017. I was living in Moscow working for a Russian newspaper. October had just arrived.

I was living with another American at the time working in Moscow. We both didn’t want to waste a beautiful crisp sunny autumn day cooped up in Moscow in the apartment.

So we took out a map and looked at what cities nearby we could visit.

We looked North, East, West and finally South. And there she was. Tula.

We’d read a lot of good things about Tula before. How Tula was the birthplace of Leo Tolstoy. That it was where a traditional Russian desert called pryaniki, or ‘gingerbread’ originated.

How for centuries Tula supplied the Russian empire with weapons and arms. And that samovars, what Russians used to make tea and keep water hot, originated from there.

Throw in a Kremlin too, which the city had, and the choice was obvious. We should visit Tula.

And off we went. To enjoy the Russian autumn in the Russian provinces.

How to get to Tula

There are two ways to get to Tula from Moscow. You can take a suburban train, known as elektrichkas, or you can take a regular train. The regular train costs more, and will take you there directly. In this case, Tula is usually the first stop of a longer train ride headed south toward Voronezh and Ukraine.

The other option, which we opted for, was the elektrichka. Elektrichkas are suburban trains that connect surrounding cities to Moscow. The elektrichka takes longer, three hours as opposed to an hour and a half. But the benefit is it is cheap. And you get to see all the smaller cities the train stops in.

When we went, the train was packed full of Russians heading to their dachas for the weekend.

Churches all across the Soviet Union were declared to have ‘no historic value’ and torn down. Churches that were several centuries old. Comunist style administration buildings were put in their place. Monuments to Russian czars were also destroyed and replaced by statues of Lenin.

In the 1980s under Gorbachev an effort was made to restore churches that had been neglected for decades under communism. The domes were put back in place and religious services began once more.

In 2006 the building was finally returned back to the Russian Orthodox Church. Somehow, Tula’s Uspensky Sobor managed to survive 80 years of neglect under Soviet rule. Let’s hope the 21st century treats it better.

It too faced threats of disappearing forever under the communists. In the 1920s the dome was torn down but the remainder of the building was left untouched. For a while it functioned as a school, and then in 1960 the building was deemed to be part of the city’s architectural heritage and received protected status.

It’s interesting to compare Kremlins in Russia and when they were built. As far as Tula is concerned, it’s Kremlin isn’t the oldest, but neither is it the youngest.

  • Veliky Novgorod – 1490
  • Moscow – 1495
  • Nizhny Novgorod – 1515
  • Tula – 1520
  • Zaraisk – 1531
  • Kolomna – 1531
  • Astrakhan – 1581
  • Smolensk – 1602
  • Rostov – 1680

There’s actually a lot more kremlins in Russia, depending on how you define a Kremlin. Technically many monetarists could be considered Kremlins, but are classified as religious objects, such as Sergiev Posad or Zvenigorod . Some have only been partly preserved, such as Kolomna . In any case, Tula gets the honor of being one of a handful of Russian cities with a Kremlin that’s been fully preserved.

In Moscow, the Kremlin is closed to the public. In order to visit, you have to pay. And as a result, nobody gets to enjoy the Kremlin. Tourists will pay and go inside when they visit the city. But the actual residents of Moscow, the people that live in the city, never get to enjoy it. It feels separated from the city, not like an integral part of it.

It wasn’t always like this. Up until the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, Moscow’s Kremlin was open to the public and anybody could walk in and out of it. It functioned just like the Kremlins in Tula, Nizhny Novgorod, Veliky Novgorod and so forth.

Moscow should learn from these cities and open their own Kremlin up to the public. The city would become much more attractive.

One problem in Tula were the wide streets that favored cars. Tula’s main street in the city that went through the center of the city had three lanes for cars going in each direction.

It was no wonder, therefore that cars drove very fast. In fact, I was quite surprised at just how loud Tula was for a city of only half a million people. It felt like on every street there was the constant noise of cars rushing by.

What should Tula do instead? Streets like these should be reduced in size and preference given to pedestrians and cyclists. Two lanes in the middle should go toward a tram line, the other two narrowed in size to make way for a bike lane going in both directions.

Tula in fact, had tram lines operating on its main streets up until WWII, before the government decided to get rid of them.

Giving the streets back to the people would make the city a more comfortable place to live.

What I love most about these buildings is how colorful they are. They are all painted in different colors.

Unfortunately many of them were in bad shape. Traditional wooden buildings in Russia are in danger of disappearing forever. All across the country these buildings are being torn down as people move to cities and forget about the buildings where their grandparents grew up and came from. I wrote an entire separate post about the topic here about a street in Tula that was filled with these wooden buildings.

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the city. Built in 1772, it contained some of the oldest graveyards and tombs in the city from over 100 years ago.

Tula was the city where the majority of Russian samovars were produced in the 19th century. You could find them all over Europe and chance are if you live in an old house and look in the attic, you will find a samovar that was made in the city of Tula.

Tula was an amazing city to visit in the fall. Russia can have extreme weather. Most of the year is covered in snow, but you have brief glimpses of fall, spring and summer that can be enjoyed.

These photos capture what fall in Russia is like. We happened to spend them in Tula, but really, any Russian city will look this beautiful in the fall.

When it comes t othe city of Tula itself, it is a great day trip outside of Moscow. The city is beaming with history. The armaments factory, the Kremlin, the wooden buildings in the center of the city, the beautiful cemetery atop the hill and the delicious Russian pryaniki all combine to make this worth the trek outside of Moscow.

Be sure to add it to your itinerary when you visit Russia and Moscow.
