Hemisphere was launched by Pendennis in 2011 as the world’s largest privately owned sailing catamaran, at 44.2m LOA. One of the most unique and imposing launches in our 35-year history, she turns heads due to her sheer scale, but equally impressive is the level of luxurious detail within her interior spaces and range of on-board facilities.
Pendennis partnered with leading multihull naval architects Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) – designers of the 33rd America’s Cup winning multihull. Their innovative design formed the large cross-deck into their trademark ‘ailes de mouette’ which not only dispersed the up-draft wave motion, but also housed the large 12-person tender. One of the more challenging aspects of Hemisphere’s design were the bomb bay doors in the cross-deck, uniquely designed to enable the storage of the tender.
Following her launch, we were delighted to be able to exhibit Hemisphere at Monaco Yacht Show in 2011. Welcoming over 600 guests on board during the week, it was one of our busiest but most rewarding shows.

Description
The 145 ft / 44.2 m Custom catamaran ‘ Hemisphere ‘ is the world’s largest catamaran and was was built in 2011 by Pendennis. This piece of marine art came off the drawing boards of Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and the yacht’s interior was designed by Michael Leach. The lines on this boat remind me of VPLP´s earlier performance catamaran designs – read our Lagoon 67 review to see what we mean.
Living Space
Well, we are obviously talking top end luxury on this Supercat. She will sleep up to 12 guests in 5 comfortable en-suite cabins. Plus a crew of 10 crew onboard. The 2 VIP cabins on the main deck have access to the forward terrace lounge forward. It’s a yacht that not even the Sunreef Yachts luxury range can compete with.
VPLP has a solid reputation for designing multihulls with projects ranging from ultra-light carbon racing cats to the 138-foot custom catamaran Douce France—previously the world’s largest luxury cat—built at Alumarine in 1999.
Wow Factor Michael Leach was responsible for the interior design – and he had a lot of space to work with. She’s very luxurious yet practical. Watersports include windsurfers, wakeboards, Seabobs, waterskis and so on. The port hull has a fully stocked dive centre that can handle both Air and NITROX tank fills. Just raise the lift-up steps aft to reveal the ultimate dive locker.
Let´s just say, there is a lot of it on Hemisphere!
The oval dining table for 12 has a map of the world etched into its glass top. There´s also a huge dining area below.
Huge Space The huge teak aft deck below is a real WOW factor and this space fits 2 seating areas, a large sunbed and a big oval table set in the shade for lunch when the sun is overhead. The entire area can be closed off with an ‘Eissen glass’ screen and cooled from A/C units located under the flybridge sun pad.
On the main deck, 2 curved sliding doors connect the aft deck with its dining and lounging areas to a 100 m2 saloon, with several zones including a seating area with fantastic views.
Forward of that is a small lobby that leads to the guest cabin in the port hull, a day head to starboard and 2 VIP cabins.
Signature Sugar Scoops And those daybeds at the top of the sugar scoops- let´s not forget those. The whole yacht has been designed with an incredible attention to detail.
The crew quarters occupy much of the starboard hull. Forward is the mess and laundry area, and aft there are three well sized cabins. A happy crew means a happy cuise!
Hemisphere has a selection of tenders including a Castoldi jet tender stowed in the starboard hull and a RIB stowed between the two that is launched via bomber-like hatches.
5 Star Accomodation The TV room is on the main deck, and puts most 5 star hotels to shame. There are Wi-Fi and socket connections, Satcom and Cellular communications, Satellite TV, iPod docking stations and MP3 connections throughout the boat. There’s also 61″ plasma TV in the lower saloon, 42″ plasmas in the VIP staterooms and 32″ LCD TVs in the guest staterooms.
It´s all a far cry from the world´s best selling catamaran! (Read our Lagoon 380 review if you want to compare notes on the 2 boats 😉 )
And she can sail, too. She’ll regularly see 10 knots, and downwind the mainsail and gennaker add up to a total sail area exceeding 12,000 feet: Hemisphere can top out at 20 knots. It’s all powered by that mouth-droppping 53m (174-foot) 5.8-ton carbon mast by Lorima, which flys 865 m2 (9,321 sq ft) to 1118 m2 (12,037 sq ft) of carbon and spectra sails. Incredibly, this amazing catamaran is her owner’s first yacht. It’s a good job he can afford the crew!
A Catamaran with a Garage? Yes. One of the most famous Hemisphere catamaran design features is the “ailes de mouette” or seagull wings under the bridge deck which minimises bridge slam. On Hemisphere the wings serve a secondary purpose: there’s a watertight garage between the two hulls within the seagull wings.
For such a large vessel, she has a very low drag so only requires relatively small engines for her size : energy consumption and noise are kept to a minimum. Midships in each hull are 2 engine rooms with 2x Caterpillar C12s 490hp engines as the power source. There are 3 Caterpillar generators with a total output of 251kW, and there is a thruster fore and aft in both hulls to make life easier in the marina.
Other technical gizmos include a Radio Zeeland control and alarm system with 550 functions including monitoring standing rigging loads to fridge temperatures, plus programmable lighting; navigation, communication and the entertainment system that was supplied by HST with control units in each cabin.
Watersports
Check out this list of toys. Well, if you have the space…..
This cat has been designed for maximising watersports fun. The owners are keen divers, and in fact the initial brief for the yacht came from this angle. A hydraulic swim platform means access to the water is easy, and a springboard, attached to the stern, is a favourite with guests.
All the Toys and More The yacht carries dive scooters, two Seabobs, wakeboards, paddleboards and mountain bikes for onshore exploration. You name it, Hemisphere probably has it covered, including:
- Certified PADI dive centre
- 16.4m F&S Custom sports fishing boat with 2 x 1150hp engines,
- 8.2m Scorpion tender with 400hp engine,
- 4.5m Castoldi jet tender with 125hp,
- Full scuba diving facilities for 12 guests,
- 4 x SeaBobs,
- Windsurfers,
- Kneeboards & tows,
- SUP (Stand up paddle board,
- 4m inflatable water trampoline,
- Inflatables,
- 1m high 2.4m professional diving board,
- Snorkelling gear,
- Sports tournament standard fishing equipment
If you like exploring the underwater world, then you´ll like this next bit.
Hemisphere has a PADI-certified, Nitrox-capable dive centre for up to 12. The ship’s captain is a qualified dive instructor. And then there is the 16.4m (53.8ft) sports fishing tender for getting to those secluded dive sites as well as being a tournament-standard fishing boat.
Entertainment
- State of the art audio visual systems, satellite television
- Wi-Fi and socket connections
- 61″ plasma in lower salon,
- 42″ plasma in VIPs and
- 32″ LCD’s in guest cabins,
- Ipod/MP3 connections throughout the yacht.
- Sat TV (Seatel)Kaleidescape system with a big movie library
If you enjoyed this review, take a look at our Azizam catamaran review which is another classic custom boat – that one’s a smaller package.
Hemisphere Plan
This next section ( Pros and Cons ) is a bit tongue in cheek for this particular custom cat. It’s a process we normally go through on our other multihull reviews. We thought it would be fun!
- All of that space! Come on, this is the largest catamaran around, you are not going to feel claustrophobic on her.
- The garage is a unique feature on this boat. When you have that many toys, you need somewhere for them to go.
- For such a large vessel, she moves. You should see double digits on a beam reach in a decent breeze.
- If you break out into a cold sweat coming into the marina on a windy day, just think of the poor skipper on Hemisphere. Mind you, he or she has bow thrusters and plenty of power in the engines. Oh and the skipper is getting paid to deal with the stress.
- She’s not the cheapest boat to run. Those marina fees are pretty eye watering, and don’t talk to me about filling up with diesel. If you go on the usual adage of 5-10% of the boat’s value on maintenance every year, you are into 7 figures. I can believe that when you think of the cost of the crew
- Most of the power for the service batteries comes from the generators. A more modern design would probably have focused more on green energy. Still, there’s always room for more customisation!
Hemisphere was launched in 2011 and she still sits at the top of the Supercats list. That gives you an idea of how ambitious this yacht build was to begin with. This is the catamaran that all other luxury multihulls aspire to, a work of art from the same team that designed the humble Lagoon 380.
FAQs: Hemisphere Catamaran
How Much Did Hemisphere Cost to Build? Well, that´s not a number that is easy to get hold of, but we are looking at north of $50 million
Can you charter Hemisphere? How much is it for a week? Yes you can, this boat is probably one of the most luxurious dive charters around, but it will cost you more than a Leopard from Sunsail. You are looking at around $250k a week. Everything is negotiable of course.

Helming Hemisphere
Gavin bladen is skipper on the 145-foot hemisphere, the largest privately owned sailing catamaran in the world. here, he speaks about his illustrious career..
Written by Hillary Buckman Photography by Burgess

Name: Gavin Bladen Nationality: British Age: 42 Current Yacht: Hemisphere
OCEAN: How did you start out in yachting and how long have you been at sea?
While backpacking around Australia for a year in 1992/93 I did my PADI Open Water Course with Cairns Dive Centre, which led to my first boat job as deckhand on board their Coral Reeftel .
While Coral Reeftel taught me the basics of deckhand work, cleaning, engine checks, tender handling, mooring and docking, assisting the engineer, painting and chipping and generally sweating away in the engine rooms, I was more drawn to the diving side of the industry after watching the diving instructors and dive masters interacting with the backpacker girls.
It was then down to Airlie Beach to complete my PADI Divemaster’s course with ProDive. I then worked as dive master on their SY Flying Dutchman and occasionally SY Romance for the rest of my stay in Australia.
After 13 months away it was back to the UK to save up for the next adventure, which would be focused on diving. In 1994 I headed back to Pro-Dive in Airlie beach to refresh my diving skills and get ready to sit my PADI Instructors Exam. It was on this trip that somebody said I would like the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean if I enjoyed the Whitsundays so much, however my goal was to move to Australia.
I spent 1994 investigating the option of moving permanently to Australia, but with no degree and no formal training in any occupation Australia was keen to attract, my score in the immigration point system was struggling to get out of single figures never mind the 150 points required.
Over the next few months, drawings were reviewed, conference calls held and the list whittled down to Marc Van Peteghem over in Paris. A month later, I left the British Virgin Islands and was sitting in a naval architects office to oversee the design phase – this was July 2004. At the first preliminary meeting it was recommended that the design should increase from 130 to 136 feet to provide more room in the aft cabins.
Then, sitting in Paris I’m presented with drawings for a 145-foot cat. Everyone was shrugging shoulders and couldn’t explain the additional nine feet. When I called the owner he said, “Don’t worry, we’ll find a use for the space” – so we were now going to build the largest sailing catamaran in the world!
It was a long process and the learning curve was often vertical, but we surrounded ourselves with the best designers, engineers and vendors we could and after 18 months in Paris we were ready to cut aluminium in America. Unfortunately the next four years proved tough as the American yard mismanaged the build contract and drove themselves into bankruptcy. We were beset with legal battles, negotiations and a constant stream of unfulfilled promises until we were able to free the project from the failed yard.
Hemisphere was completed at Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, where the project was shipped to in October 2009, and over the next 22 months we finally reach our goal, with Hemisphere launched and commissioned in August 2011.
Unfortunately Hurricanes Luis and Marilyn had beaten me to the Caribbean and brought havoc to the area. While the British Virgin Islands had faired extremely well, the US Virgin Islands were devastated, along with the start of the tourist season.
OCEAN: Can you describe some of your most exhilarating and challenging adventures to date?
Overseeing the design and building of Hemisphere was the most challenging adventure, but also one of the most rewarding. Our farewell from Pendennis and the town of Falmouth was a firework display off the main beach. We departed the shipyard in the failing light of a summer’s evening, and headed out of the bay and around past the castle and down to the beach. Hemisphere was finally clear from her shrouds of protection and could finally be seen in all her glory. We hovered off the beach as dusk gave way to dark, which was quickly replaced by the chaos of fireworks overhead. Hemisphere turned to face the beach and blasted her horns as a final farewell, which was greeted by an amazing applause that gave me goosebumps – I will always remember that evening. Then we turned and he headed off into the English Channel, en route to the Med.
OCEAN: What is your favourite thing about being a superyacht captain?
Teaching and showing people something new. I take as much enjoyment teaching a kid how to snorkel as I do an adult how to dive. It doesn’t matter how outgoing or adventurous the guests are when they arrive, we can always find something new to make their trip memorable.
OCEAN: Hemisphere has cruised through Panama, Costa Rica, Cocos, Galapagos and French Polynesia. Was this an easy process and how successful has it been so far?
It’s all about organisation, research and having the right contacts. It’s easy to run yachts that only do the milk run, however the effort to venture off the beaten path is rewarded by discoveries, adventures and friends you make along the way and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Galapagos was probably the trickiest out of these destinations. Unfortunately while they are busy thinking up new rules to protect the area, they are sometimes losing sight of the initial goal. I’m not one to typically write thank you notes to the places we visit, however I did elect to write to the national parks with suggestions how they could help themselves and maybe make things easier for future visiting yachts. In the letter I praise the decision to limit visitor numbers to the Galapagos, but point out that the initiative of giving local boats first visiting rights results in visiting yachts having to revisit certain areas, thus meaning a lot of unnecessary travel, traffic and fuel being burnt.
I was also critical of the diving legislation; regulations have contributed to the development of a monopoly situation where only six live-aboard dive boats have the right to the two premier dive sites, Darwin and Wolfe.
Hemisphere paid out US$48,000 in cruising fees, $1600 in Park entrance fees, over $5000 in port and harbour fees, almost $10,000 in having two guides onboard and just under $20,000 in local dive boat services but we still didn’t have the right to take the owner to Darwin and Wolfe. To do this we would have had to rent a live-aboard dive boat on a weekly basis and paid out an additional $60,000! Why should a private company have the right to charge $60,000 for the privilege to dive the premier dive sites in Galapagos, while the park sees nothing of this income? The park also needs to improve the standard of its local dive operators, unfortunately a few operators fall well short of acceptable standards.
OCEAN: What has been your favourite destination to visit so far and why?
Isla Cocos, Costa Rica. It’s a small island off the coast of Costa Rica. The island is stunning and was used in the opening credits of Jurassic Park . It’s lush, green and while we were there it rained, creating over 60 waterfalls that plunged into the ocean off the cliffs. The camera crews for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week are regular visitors and for good reason, the diving is phenomenal.
OCEAN: You recently undertook some maintenance work. Where did you get this done and what work was undertaken?
Doing maintenance in remote places is always tricky, however we have been able to haul Hemisphere out in French Polynesia at the navy dry dock facility in Papeete, which went very smoothly.
For some of the more technical maintenance we have flown in professionals from Europe. It does add to the cost, but it allows us to stay in paradise and with a little creativity we have managed to undertake everything we wanted to do.
OCEAN: What honest and direct advice do you have for maritime authorities/government/superyacht industry association types on how to better serve the needs of private visiting superyachts and charter yachts?
Yachts can bring a wealth of economic advantages to the locations they visit, and the easier it is to arrive, stay, have access to visas for crew with less favourable passports and operate the yacht’s business, the better it is for all.
This year we will cruise French Polynesia, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand, all of which will be fairly easy to operate in, however we are already starting to jump through hoops to set ourselves up in Australia, which is 10 months before we actually arrive, just to ensure everything will be in order.
OCEAN: If young Australians and Kiwis are looking to enter the yachting industry as a profession, what advice do you have for them?
Don’t jump around. Find a yacht you like and stay with it for a while and learn everything you can. Unfortunately it is becoming the norm for crews to jump boats to look for career advancement or more lucrative deals without building up any meaningful duration or experience from the yachts they’ve worked on. While certificates and tickets are required in the industry, it unfortunately doesn’t mean the candidates have the practical skills to hold the position.
One of the first things I look at when reviewing a CV is longevity in past positions, if the candidate moves frequently I just pick up the next CV.
OCEAN: If you weren’t in the yachting industry what do you think you’d be doing?
Taking anti-depressants and looking out of a dreary office window thinking that there must be more to life!

Built by Pendennis and designed by renowned naval architects and multihull specialists, Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost, her interior concept by Michael Leach Design can be described as "Polynesian Six Star Luxury": 15 varieties of stone, 18 different leathers, a soothing palette and blend of finishes including walnut soles, brushed oak and wengé, make HEMISPHERE a charter connoisseur's dream.

The TV room on the main deck, boasts a Kaleidescape system where charter guests can choose from hundreds of movies and games. There's a 61" plasma TV in the lower saloon, 42" plasmas in the VIP staterooms and 32" LCD TVs in charter guest staerooms.
Outside, the flybridge affords massive deck space for recreation, and an inviting seating area surrounds the spa pool. The main aft deck features a fascinating oval-shaped glass table, etched with a map of the world's seven continents. The lavish formal dining area is located on the deck below.
As for water sports and toys, HEMISPHERE'S options are nearly limitless for charter guests. In addition to an 8.2m Scorpion tender with 315hp Yamaha inboard, HEMISPHERE comes equipped with a 16.4m (54ft) F&S custom sport fishing boat for game fishing, diving and guest excursions. There is a 4.5m Castoldi jet wave rider with Yanmar 125hp engine, full scuba diving gear for 12 guests, water skis, five water scooters, two Seabobs, wake boards, kneeboard, kayaks, paddle boards, tow toys, a 4.8m inflatable water trampoline and a 1m high 2.4m professional diving board!

World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Hemisphere
Burgess Yachts, the yacht’s management company, recently announced that the 145-foot luxury sailing Catamaran Hemisphere has started sea trials in the United Kingdom in anticipation of delivery from Pendennis Shipyard. The owner officially takes delivery in late July, Hemisphere will become the largest sailing catamaran in the world, as well as the largest available for charter. TAYLOR’D YACHT CHARTERS can assist you with arranging a yacht charter on CATAMARAN HEMISPHERE.
The yacht was originally known as the Gemini Project and in 2008, was scheduled to be delivered from Derecktor Shipyards in the United States. In 2009 Pendennis won the contract to complete the build.
After she launches this summer, Catamaran HEMISPHERE will be used exclusively by the owner in the Mediterranean for the 2011 Summer Season. She will be moved to the Caribbean for her first season of charter this winter. HEMISPHERE will transit the Panama Canal for a 2012 summer season in the South Pacific.
Luxury CATAMARAN HEMISPHERE is the largest sailing catamaran in the world at 44m (145ft). Her huge size means she can afford every luxury, as well as sail or motor at high speeds. Being a catamaran she is also very stable at sea. A draft of only 3m (9.8ft) ensures ease of maneuverability and access to ports and lagoons inaccessible to monohulls of comparable size. Decks and rig are remarkably uncluttered as visible deck hardware has been minimized, and the 53m (174ft) high mast soars free of spreaders with all lines running internally. Tenders are also ingeniously stowed out of sight, and the port transom houses a full watersports and dive locker served by a large hydraulic swim platform. Watersports – 8.1m Scorpion tender with 315hp engine, 4m Nautica tender, full scuba diving facilities (PADI dive instructor on board), waterskis, wakeboard & tows, 1m high professional diving board, windsurfing gear, fishing gear, snorkel gear, Communications & entertainment Satcom & cellular communications facilities, VSAT, Fleet 77, Wi-Fi internet access Comprehensive audio-visual systems, satellite television, iPod/MP3 connections throughout yacht.
HEMISPHERE has 8 crew and will be able to accommodate up to 12 charter guests in luxury in 4 double and 1 twin cabin.
Interior Designer Michael Leach has created a relaxed elegance which is the epitome of contemporary chic. Michael Leach Design created a decor echoing some island influences, yet also high-end home influences. Despite 16 leather finishes plus 16 different granites, the five guest staterooms, saloon, and other spaces aren’t busy or overwhelming.
The naval-architecture team of Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) have ensured Catamaran HEMISPHERE’s decks are as free of gear as possible. HEMISPHERE has a spacious flybridge with jacuzzi, sunpads and shaded dining along with a vast indoor/outdoor living area on the main deck.

'Our love for the water': New owners taking on Huron Lady II this season
When the Huron Lady II’s first sightseeing voyage of the season heads out on May 25, it’ll be under new ownership.
Under Captain Walker Yacht Services, couple Dustin and Kristy Walker, of Chesterfield, are taking over the longtime Blue Water staple — both kicking off a second career for each, as well as taking advantage of a deep family love for spending time on the water.
“I had always joked that maybe we would buy it someday as our second career. I just didn’t think it would happen this soon,” Kristy Walker said with a laugh on Thursday.
Dustin Walker, who couldn’t be immediately reached as of Friday, grew up in St. Clair and worked in Port Huron, Kristy said. The couple had also spent a lot of family vacations staying in harbors and marinas, “bebopping around,” on Lake Huron and the St. Clair River — all important pieces connecting to her husband’s roots as they started and grew their family.
“So, when he was ready to be done with the mortgage-lending side of business, his kind of second career path was he was going to get his captain’s license,” she said. Dustin spent the summer of 2019 working on the Huron Lady and began driving for former owner Jenny Ciolek the next year.
Now, Kristy said they’re excited for their three teenage daughters to see them taking on this next adventure, running the Huron Lady together, taking the risk and being their own boss.
“Really, the whole reason behind it is our love for the water,” she said, “the memories you make out on the water, how beautiful everything is right in our own backyard in this community.”
The original Huron Lady began boat excursions in the mid-1990s with Capt. John and Camille Rigney, purchasing the Huron Lady II in 1999.
Ciolek had manned, owned and operated the current Huron Lady since 2011 before passing the business to the Walkers around the start of this year.
“It’s a great business. I loved running it and owning it. But my husband and I are moving toward retirement age,” she said. “So, we had kind of talked about, at some point, we would need to try to find a buyer for the business and somebody who would do a good job. And hopefully, keep it in the community. Just through conversation, Dustin Walker and I talked about it, and he and his wife were interested. So, we kind of started moving forward with that, and Jan. 8, it was final.”
Ciolek said she’ll continue her other longtime gig as a co-host and producer for the PBS television program, “Michigan Out of Doors.” She also said she was looking forward to spending more time with family and a new grandchild.
The Huron Lady II vessel will remain docked on the Black River in front of Bootleggers Axe Co. and Wings Etc. when the season kicks off. The officially listed address is 102 Huron Ave.
Tours will formally begin at 1 p.m. on May 25, and Kristy Walker said they’ll hold a blessing of the vessel earlier that day at 10 a.m. Currently, it was in nearby boat storage.
In addition to keeping the traditional public sightseeing cruises, specialty cruises, and participating in local events like Sturgeon Fest, Kristy said they’ll have a few new things in store for visitors and local residents.
“We’re bringing back the dinner cruises. That really only stopped because of COVID,” she said. “… We’re going to have two different options for people. They can either dine on board with us or they can cruise down to St. Clair and dine at the Voyager. We’re also going to announce brunch cruises soon.”

The largest country in the world at 17,075,400 square kilometres (or 6,592,800 sq mi), Russia has accumulated quite an impressive reputation. Covering more than an eight of the Earth's land area, 142 million people live there making it the ninth largest nation by population . Still known for its impressive days as the expansive Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia was the world's first and largest constitutionally socialist state. A recognized superpower, the USSR was known for its excellence in both arts and science winning many awards in both fields.
Russia changed drastically after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but it continues to be a powerful and important nation. It has one of the world's fastest growing economies and the world's eight largest GDP by nominal GDP. Russia is also one of the five countries which officially recognized nuclear weapons states. In conjunction with this title, Russia is also a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the G8, APEC and the SCO, and is a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
A European city in a country that lies over a vast part of Asia, Moscow holds one-tenth of all Russian residents . The city is located in the western region of Russia and is the capital and epicentre of political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation happenings. "Muscovites" , as residents are known, tend to be cultured and worldly. This may be due to the many scientific, educational, and artistic institutions that are based here.
