MODX 70: New Era in Sustainable Yachting
Océan Développement is a French shipyard dedicated to offshore racing and marine projects, founded in 2008 by two renown sailors and athletes, Stève Ravussin and Franck David.
Their concept MODX 70, a new pleasure catamaran 100% renewable energies packed with innovation and technologies. The MODX series is the result of 10 years of experience in developing sustainable, accessible and performing yachts .
The MODX 70 design combines the expertise in performance sailing and renewable energy management in a marine context to create a new generation of yachts for coastal and offshore cruising .
Reaching full autonomy and zero carbon emission in operation, requires a fine balance and strategic choices in the selection of materials as well as in the implementation of technologies and systems.
This new 70′ catamaran is the first vessel to feature two automated propulsion systems: two inflatable wings on retractable masts and an electric motor system with variable pitch propellors for hydrogeneration.
MODX 70 comes in 3 possible colours and is configurable through interior design and a selection of bio-sourced materials as well as through the layout to meet customers needs and preferred program: owner, eco- charter or eco-expedition.

You like innovative multihulls? Do you miss the Hydraplaneur we were on about earlier? You’re in for a treat with the MODX 70! This new 100% renewable energy cruising catamaran is indeed equipped with the latest generation technologies allowing it to manage without fossil-based energy: there will be no generator on board. To achieve this feat without jeopardizing safety, the MODX 70 designers decided to launch a catamaran large enough to support a very powerful battery bank while increasing the potential area of the solar panels - it stretches to 750 square feet (70 m²). The two motors are capable of a 100-mile range. The fully automated rig is perhaps the most amazing feature as the two retractable carbon masts - one on each hull - each support a 1,345 sq ft (125 m²) inflatable wing. These two wings ensure a 35% better performance compared to a conventional rig with the same sail area. The principle of this catamaran is to reach 10 knots very easily to ensure efficient hydrogeneration (thanks to the variable pitch propellers) of about 3 kWp. Hull #1 is already in build, using 38% biosourced epoxy resin, 40% recycled PET foam, flax fiber and cork. And if anyone is doubting the determination of the team behind the project, take a look at the first hull coming out of the mold in Lorient on February 22nd this year! Mr. Matthieu Robert, Madintec's managing partner, talks about the genesis and the vision shared with Océan Développement, the shipyard builder of the MODX series, which aims at decarbonizing tomorrow's yachting.
A look back at the history of Madintec
Madintec is a design office created ten years ago and entirely dedicated to innovation in the world of boating. We are specialized in the development of electronic and software solutions. We are known for our new generation autopilot: MADBrain. It has rapidly conquered the offshore racing market in the last 5 years. We accompany several skippers in great victories like the Vendée Globe. We wish the 46 boats that we equip at the start of the next Route du Rhum to follow the same path of success.

What is the interest for you to collaborate on an innovative program through the new MODX 70 sailing catamaran?
Participating in an innovative adventure in the nautical industry is the very essence of our design office. It is essential to feed our ten engineers with challenges, all the more so when it is in collaboration with talented teams such as Océan Développement, directed by Franck David, and the new start-up Aeroforce, which will soon launch a very innovative product in the field of automated inflatable wings dedicated to pleasure boating.
The other essential point that motivated our participation in the MODX70 project is the adequacy with our values and our commitment to solutions participating in sustainable nautical transport and respecting the oceans.
It is in the same spirit that we are participating in the SkyCityFoiler project, an electric hydrofoil catamaran (MerConcept). Madintec proposes from today a complete solution to democratize the piloting of hydrofoil ships which allow a strong reduction of energy needs.
It is high time that the yachting industry wakes up and starts its decarbonization, the solutions are there!
Without revealing "trade secrets", can you tell us more about the major development axes associated with the MODX 70 (hydrogeneration, wing automation, pilot, energy manager,...)
Indeed, we cannot reveal too much the technological innovations associated to the MODX 70, they are numerous and varied. This project challenges the whole Madintec team. We are developing new electronic boards to meet the needs of wing automation, it is brand new and it must be safe and simple! Simplicity also means a dedicated user interface made by our team. But we think that the essential and the originality of the project is the integration within the same system of the various components of production and consumption of energy. In this way, we design particularly efficient management algorithms. We are inventing the yachting of tomorrow, without charging stations!
