The Kingdom of Norway (Norwegian Kongeriket Norge). This country, occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. Its name originates from the Old Norse word Nor?rvegr – “way to north." Norway is a great sailing destination, surrounded by three seas: the Barents Sea to the northeast, the Norwegian – to the West and Northen Sea – to the south-west it has a lot to offer to most experienced sailors. Norway has a long and narrow territory with 30% covered by forests, many rivers and lakes. More than half of the country's territory is occupied by mountains.
Only Norway yacht charter vacation can offer a unique blend of gorgeous scenery, diverse wildlife and spectacular Nothern Lighst watching. Explore drammatic northern nature and spectacular landscapes form the comfort of your yacht or catamaran.
General description: The kingdom of Norway, one of the largest countries in Europe, spreads its borders along the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Norway yacht charter is an ideal way to explore magnificent fjords, which are unique geological formations stretching deep into surrounding mountains, indenting its rugged coastline, present the most spectacular features. Norway is also the home of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Places of interest:
The capital, Oslo, is a vibrant city centered round a harbor and guarded by the 14-th century castle. The center of Oslo is home to the Royal Palace, Viking Ship Museum, a lot of parks and galleries, as well as other public institutions. Rent a boat in Norway and discover the area close to Oslo, that is well built-up, with bustling harbors, guarded by fortresses as early as 1643. But further south the scenery is like post cards depicting dramatic towns and serene villages with quaint clapboard houses and boats galore.
Bareboat charter in Oslofjorden area will bring you to the oldest settlements dated back to Stone and Bronze Ages. Hanko is one of the islands in this area. Its harbor town has the oldest naval museum in the world, established in 1853. Although it sits on a bare rock, facing the fjord, its sheltered eastern side is well forested, providing a much-favored harbor and anchorage. The Norwegian Yachting Association was founded here in 1882. Since then the island has been a venue for national regattas, sailing races and world championship events. Norway yacht charter in July will give you a chance to see most popular Hanko Regatta that collects over 200 boats.
Southern Norway bareboat charter
The southern coast ( Oslo and Bergen ), lined with silver-sand beaches set against a backdrop of high mountain plateau, and white-painted houses in fish-farming villages, is known as the sunny side of Norway and summer paradise for holiday-makers. Renting a boat here you will find numerous harbors with all necessary amenities.
Western Norway yacht charter
The long lacy western coastline borders the North Sea. This part of the country is a true land of fjords, waterfalls, glaciers and secluded beaches. Bergen is the second biggest town in Norway and offers number of yachts for charter. Back in 10170 Bergen was the largest town in the country and the capital of a region that included Iceland, Greenland and parts of Scotland. Even after Oslo became capital of Norway in 1299, Bergen continued to grow as a trading center, especially for the exports of dried fish. Now it is a true center of shipping. Bergen is a World Heritage City and the official residence of the king of Norway.
Northern Norway
Northern Norway ( Tromso and Lofoten ) has been called as "the land of excitement" or "the land of the high flames". These expressions capture the essence of it - the shimmering Northern Lights of winter and the midnight sun that shines day and night in summer. With bareboat charter, you will be able to explore its unspoiled coast that consists of a multitude of islands, fjords, snow-clad peaks and glaciers. The northernmost point in Norway, Nordkapp (the North Cape), is a place of pilgrimage for all-time traveler. Sheer 1,014-ft (309-m) high perpendicular cliffs form this most amazing landmark as Europe's most northerly point.
Rent a boat in Eastern Norway
The route between Tonsberg and Tjome, known as World's End, is only 19 miles (30 km) but plenty of time needed to explore this stunning archipelago. There are impressive coves, narrow sounds, old skipper's houses and boathouses, also a string of inviting holiday resorts. Bridges connecting the larger islands and the sea is never far away for a refreshing swim. Mountains, valleys and lakes dominate this incredible landscape. It has a special appeal for rock climbers and hikers: from the easy alpine pastures in Alvdal to demanding peaks in the national parks.
Festivities. There are four defined seasons in Norway and "every season has its charm". And Norway finds its enjoyment in each of them by creating a number of festivals: snow and ice sculpture tournament, ski- kite event, white-water canoe racing, dog-sledding, boat festivals - fairs and games all the way along the coast.
Although sometimes wind or cold, rain or snow, can bring those pleasures indoors (Jazz, folklore and dance festivals, film premieres and art exhibitions), but nothing can spoil high spirit, because festivals are important part of the nation's cultural life.
While on the yacht charter in Norway do not miss its vibrant cuisine rich in fresh seafood (smoked, pickled or dried fish including whale meat and seal) and wild game (reindeer, elk, pheasant, etc.). Although over the years the local restaurants have become incredibly diverse, including exotic international meals in the menu, Norwegian specialties, such as lamb and cabbage stew or reindeer medallions or marinade of rabbit, cannot be missed. Other traditional favorites include cured smoked sausage and pheasant breast served with mushroom sauce. One should not forget Norwegian most famous cheeses, best served on Ryvita crisps. And for desert try fruits and especially berries (gooseberries or black- and red currants).
Climate in Norway
Much of the country is habitable due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. It comfortably creates mild winters and cool summers on the west coast. The south and west of the country have the highest average temperature 72F (22C) in Oslo in July. Norway is a vast country with wide variations in its geographical and climate conditions. Both at sea and in the mountains the wind and weather can change rapidly, thus it is advisable to consult local people with knowledge of the sea before setting forth into unknown waters.
Magnificent scenery combined with the wide range of outdoor activities (whale and seal safaris; cave walking; dog-sledging, mountain climbing, etc.) - that what makes Norway so appealing to adventurous travelers. Norway has enormously long coastline interspersed with fjords and islands, making boating a pure haven. And the most rewarding way to explore the remote and enticing parts of this unique country is definitely by sailing. The western coastline provides the most convenient and safe mooring for the boats. Although anchorage is free-of-charge in Norway, there are certain (and sometimes complicated) specifics about mooring and berths. That's why it is better to let experts deal with it. No matter how well-organized your sailing event looks like, it is always wise and safe to consult and present your vacation dream to professionals and let "12 Knots" do what they are good at.

The Royal Yacht: History
The Norwegian Royal Yacht Norge is one of the world’s two remaining royal yachts. The other is the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog , since the British Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997.
In 1905 the Norwegian Government formally invited Prince Carl of Denmark to become the king of Norway. The proposal included the promise of a royal yacht, financed by the state and placed at the king’s disposal. However, due to the difficult economic situation in Norway after the dissolution of the union with Sweden, King Haakon (formerly Prince Carl) did not call upon the Government to provide a yacht.
Gift from the people
Not until after WWII did the question of a royal yacht arise again. The Norwegian press appealed to the people to raise the funds necessary to present King Haakon with a yacht on the occasion of his 75th birthday. In July 1947, the British motor yacht Philante was purchased for NOK 1.5 million.
The Philante was built in England in 1937 for the British aircraft manufacturer Thomas Sopwith. At the time it was one of the largest vessels of its kind. Sopwith used the yacht as a base when competing in regattas. In fact, the Philante first entered Norwegian waters in 1938 in connection with a regatta at Hankø in Eastern Norway.
The name Philante is an amalgam of the owner’s wife’s name, Phyllis, and the owner’s name, Thomas: Phil (short for “Phyllis”) + an (short for “and”) + t (for “Thomas) + e (to add an extra syllable).
Convoy escort vessel
After the outbreak of WWII the British Royal Navy requisitioned the Philante . First used as an escort vessel for convoys crossing the Atlantic, it was put into service as a school ship for training convoy escorts in 1942. The ship was returned to Thomas Sopwith in 1946 and sold to Norway the following year.
Renovation of the ship
The ship needed to be refurbished before it could be used, so King Haakon was given a model of the yacht on his 75th birthday. In particular, the interior of the ship required extensive refitting, and architect Finn Nilsson was asked to be the designer. On 17 May 1948 the ship’s captain, Commander Christian Monsen, raised the command pennant for the first time, and on 9 June the Royal Yacht was handed over to King Haakon.
The ship was christened the Norge .
The Royal Yacht
In the years that followed, King Haakon used the Royal Yacht to visit communities along the coast of Norway and to travel abroad. In June 1955 the King paid a visit to Molde in Western Norway. It was to be his final voyage on the Norge.
King Olav took over the ship after his father died in 1957. A technical assessment resulted in a 10-year plan for upgrading the hull and technical equipment. Like his father before him, King Olav used the Royal Yacht in his official capacity as well as in his leisure time.
In the winter of 1985 the Norge was in dry dock at the Horten Shipyard for repair and upgrading when welding operations sparked a fire that quickly spread. The vessel was severely damaged in the fire, with the exception of the hull and engines, which remained relatively intact. King Olav decided that the ship was to be rebuilt.
Once again, architect Finn Nilsson was asked to refit the interior. Just over a year after the fire the King was again able to take command of the Royal Yacht, in safer and in better technical condition than had previously been the case.
The Royal Yacht today
HM King Harald took over the Norge after King Olav died in 1991. The King and Queen travel on board the Norge in connection with official engagements in Norway and abroad. The King also uses the vessel as a base when competing in major yacht races.

Oslo and the surrounding area is a must-visit during your sail! Further down the coast are Kristiansand and Sörlandet, the Norwegians' own summer paradise with beautiful beaches and unusually many hours of sunshine. Norway's west coast also has a lot of great destinations! Stavanger, Bergen , Tromsø and Lofoten are just a few of the great destinations.

Where to sail in Norway
Oslo is certainly a city with a lot going on right now! The city was named Europe's Green Capital 2019 and is also filled with exciting cuisines, cool events and fun new neighbourhoods! Sail in through the Oslofjord to see the beautiful scenery and discover the city from the sea.
Once ashore, the region offers everything from big-city experiences to stunning scenery If you're looking for a more cultural experience, the new Munch Museum will open in autumn 2020. Edvard Munch was one of the greatest artists in Norway's history and much of his 28,000 works are collected in the museum. Bordering Oslo are also the regions of Østfold and Vestfold, where you can dock by boat in the charming towns of Fredrikstad and Tønsberg.
Kristiansand and Sørlandet
Sørlandet, Norway's southernmost region, is also the summer paradise of Norwegians. The region is full of beautiful beaches and when you travel by boat, you also have access to the thousands of islands that are found in the region. The largest city in the region is Kristiansand. There you can stroll through beautiful authentic alleys in the old town of Posebyen, feast on fresh seafood or take part in one of the city's many festivals.
If you're travelling with the family, Dyreparken is a safe bet, while Kristiansand Zoo is a guaranteed hit with kids young and old. If you sail the furthest south in the region, you'll find Lindesnes lighthouse, Norway's southernmost point! If you want to enjoy a tasty meal, the Michelin restaurant Under is also located here, the world's largest underwater restaurant.
Continuing past the southern tip of Norway and sailing up the west coast of Norway, you'll soon reach Stavanger, the largest city in south-western Norway. Stavanger is the perfect starting point if you want to experience famous natural attractions such as Preikestolen and Lysefjorden.
In the coastal area of Jæren you will find some of Norway's whitest and longest beaches and the area is also a paradise for water sports. The city itself also has much to offer and as the former European Capital of Culture, Stavanger has a wide range of museums and a vibrant cultural life.
The mountain
Departing from Stavanger and continuing along the west coast of Norway, you'll reach Bergen after a while. Bergen may be Norway's second largest city, but it still has a cosy small-town feel with its traditional wooden houses and surrounding mountain landscape.
An obvious destination when visiting Bergen is the UNESCO-protected Hanseatic Port, which has been a trading post for a thousand years. Bergen is also a real student city, so there's always something going on. So there's always even an exciting concert or art exhibition to visit.
In the middle of Norway's west coast lies Trøndelag, a region that offers both culinary experiences and outdoor pursuits. Here you can fish, cycle or enjoy the local culinary culture, which places great emphasis on locally produced ingredients.
Trondheim, the region's largest city, offers a wide range of culinary experiences and you can find everything from cosy cafés to Michelin restaurants. If you're looking for further gourmet experiences, a visit to the UNESCO-protected mining town of Røros is recommended. Here you can combine a well cooked meal with interesting history.
In northern Norway, you'll find the Lofoten archipelago. When you visit this region you will be shocked by the wonderful landscape with its massive mountains, deep fjords and idyllic sandy beaches. In addition, the region offers amazing natural phenomena.
From late May to mid-July you can enjoy the northern lights and the midnight sun, while from September to mid-April you can see the astonishing northern lights. The wildlife here is also absolutely stunning with mighty sea eagles and killer whales. Lofoten is also working to become a sustainable destination, which means that they strive to offer travellers rewarding experiences while preserving the local nature, culture and environment.
Driving a little further north, you'll come to Tromsø, also known as the "capital of the Arctic". If you want to discover epic nature and go on a whale safari, you've come to the right place.
There are also great hiking trails nearby and in Lyngenfjord you can go on idyllic summit walks between the mountains. If you're interested in Sami culture and history, Karasjok and Alta are also recommended.

WHAT TO SEE ON A YACHT CHARTER JOURNEY ACROSS NORWAY
Bergen, the gateway to the fjords, makes a great starting point for your Norway yachting holiday. The culturally enriched UNESCO World Heritage city combines lively city life, world-leading seafood restaurants and stunning natural wonders on its doorstep. From the city’s colourful harbour, you can easily access the coastline and inner fjords (away from the North Sea) and take a generally calm, easy and sedate Norway yachting cruise, as you connect between the northern and southern regions.
Lysefjord – Witness the beauty and serenity of one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords where waterfalls and sheer rock cliffs combine to create scenes straight out of a fairy tale book. Gaze in awe at mountains dramatically towering 1000 metres high above the 42km-long fjord. Get your camera at the ready to snap friendly goats grazing on patches of grass on the waters’ edge.
Hardangerfjord – In Spring, the glaciers here come alive with blossoming fruit trees. Visit local farms in this fertile haven and taste the local cider. Or if you are feeling adventurous, go on a hike to Trolltunga, immersed in an emerald green landscape of steep majestic mountains, crystalline waterfalls and snaking rivers.
Flåm – The town of Flåm is located by Sognefjord in an idyllic landscape of soaring mountains, cascading waterfalls and thick lush forests that enthrals many a visitor. There is a lot to see and do here including kayaking, hiking and wildlife spotting. Whale watching – Norway’s waters are habitat to a wonderful variety of whale species – from orcas and humpbacks to minkes and porpoises. Seeing them rise with such force above the water surface is a fascinating sight. The whales tend to gather at coastal areas near fjords and can typically be found in the north around Tromso and the Lofoten Islands.
Northern Lights – This amazing natural wonder is synonymous with Norway and wrapped up in Nordic folklore. Seeing otherworldly flashes of neon blue and green dance across the sky creates a lifetime memory. The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) can be spotted anywhere in Norway but heading north, above the Arctic Circle, increases your chances of catching a glimpse on your holiday. Sightings are often found in Tromso, Alta, Narvik, Lyngeford, Svalbard and the Lofoten Islands.

AVERAGE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES
You may have heard about the unpredictability of Norway’s weather, which is true. Every season can contain four seasons of weather, so come prepared with various layers of clothes. Fjord cruising can be windy and chilly. Added to that is the variation of climate across the country. The coastal areas attract precipitation, and in the winter Norway’s west coast tends to be quite mild in contrast to the much colder north.
Between May to August is deemed to be the best time to visit, if you want to avoid the harsh winter conditions on your Norway yacht charter holiday. May is the driest month, and July and August, the sunniest and warmest, with temperatures averaging about 20°C (68°F).
During the long summer months, the sun never sets in parts of Norway. Every year for about two months, the population of Tromsø, to the north, experiences the ‘midnight sun’ phenomenon.
