About our office in Greece

We welcome you to our site. Our course in the yachting field begun in the middle of the 80's, with the purchase of several yachts for charter use in Greece. Upon our entrance in the charter yachting business, we discovered many secrets. Among them, perhaps the greatest was to forge our own unique opinion on whatever has to do with the condition of a yacht.

In 1989, we created a yacht charter office, which we preserved for about 8 years. In this course of time, we were given the chance to meet most of the yacht-owners in Greece, as well as engineers, sail constructors, and other specialists of the trade.

Thus, we finally managed to acquire the most valuable knowledge of preserving a yacht in the best way, as well as accurately estimating its condition.

Through all these years, we met Customers from various parts of the world, with a common interest, yachts and the sea, and we shared their dreams of owning their own yacht.

From 1997 and beyond, we are exclusively running as a yacht brokers company, having created a list of yachts that have been inspected carefully and with respect to the same basic rule: respect to those who buy but also to those who sell.

We may be a bit closer to the Seller, but in conclusion our greatest care is magnanimously given to the Buyer, since we know that the sentimental burden of buying a boat is fairly strong, especially when the bought is taking place in an almost unknown for him place.

The yachts that our lists include are not as perfect as new. But from us you will learn their true condition (the one that we can inspect of course) and it's up to you to decide whether it's worth it or not to visit us.

Our sole purpose is not just to gain a client, but to make our Clients the living advertising of our work. This is our real success and perhaps the greatest investment to the future.

Most of the yachts that are available for sale, are in Greece but a few that are available in nearby countries like Turkey, Croatia, Italy and elsewhere.

You can reach us daily at the phone number above.

Please mention TheYachtMarket.com when contacting the seller.

Cameron has been working with clients preparing for Bermuda races, extensive blue water cruising, and many that are new to boating.

Rick Fleig Rick grew up on Long Island spending many years sailing on the Sound in everything from J/22′s to J/105′s, Custom C&C 41′s and many other boats, competing in all the major Northeast events. This experience and passion for sailing led him on a path to sail in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia with both the Courageous and USA Syndicates. He has sailed in many major international regattas, including the Swan World Championships in Sardinia, the World 6 Meter Championships in Portofino, Italy, and several Newport Bermuda races.

Rick combines his extensive sailing background with both the marine and sports industry, having worked as a regional sales manager at SunfishLaser and Vanguard Sailboats, and prior to that as a regional sales representative with sporting goods giant Nike. He believes that building relationships and understanding the clients’ needs are essential in helping customers have a great experience with their boats. He works out of the McMichael Yacht Broker’s Newport office at the Newport Shipyard.

Rick resides in Portsmouth, RI, with his family, having fallen in love with the Newport area during his many sailing events there. He recently retired as the director/coach of the Portsmouth High School Sailing Team after many years, and along with his wife, Carline, now enjoys his time proudly following their youngest son, Tyler, who just finished his second year at the US Naval Academy. Tyler is a very accomplished sailor himself, and a member of the nationally ranked USNA dinghy sailing team. Rick is a member of Sail Newport and can be seen racing many weeknights and weekends in all the local events in a variety of boats.

Michael has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his clients, and enjoys working directly with buyers to identify the best possible “next boat” from the many options available. He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

It is highly recommended to visit the boat, physically, prior to committing yourself in any agreement (in writing).

It is very important being yourself in the boat!!!!!

Since you will spend much time in the boat (and under difficult conditions sometimes), it is very important to be sure about practical issues like headroom, size of the berths or even the space in the heads!!

After you are “convinced” that this is “the boat”, we highly advise the next steps:

  • Signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Seller(s) of the yacht with terms and conditions of the purchase (particulars of the specific yacht, price, place of delivery, equipment, running fees etc), to assure the time needed for conducting the necessary inspection (Condition Survey).
  • Once you have both (Seller – Buyer) signed the MoA, a deposit will be transferred to the Broker’s (YD Yachts) bank account (usually 10% of the purchase price). The Broker will be acting as the Trustee for both parties (Seller and Buyer) till the conclusion of the sale. YD Yachts will pay it to the Seller on Closing date.

For the Greek Flagged boats we highly recommend the Buyers to use the services of a Solicitor.

See more in:  Do I need a Solicitor? – Yachts for sale, Preowned yachts, Yachts offers, Used yachts (ydyachts.com)

  • Afterwards, you should have the yacht inspected by the Surveyor of your choice.

All related expenses for the survey are paid by the Buyer prior to the realization of the survey. In case of acceptance of the boat we will proceed to the next step to finalize the transfer of the ownership.

In case of vessel’s rejection by the Buyer,  the MoA will be rendered null and void and the deposit will be returned to the Buyer.

  • The payment of the balance purchase money will be paid by the Buyer to the Seller, provided that the Trustee (or The Solicitor) has received, by the Seller, in original, all the documentation required for the transfer of the boat to the Buyer, free of debts and encumbrances of any nature whatsoever, and allow the Buyer to proceed safely to the new registration (under his name).

The above steps are the result of long time experience in the yacht brokerage. The specific steps ensure a smooth and legal purchase of your yacht.

YD YACHTS After Sale Service

Yacht sales often involve the need of providing after-sale services.

After the completion of the sale, the most important issue (and critical most of the times) for a buyer is the after-sale support.  Legal issues related to the local Authorities, and local technicians’ contact details are the most common.

Nearly all pre-owned boat buyers are planning renovation and/or upgrades on the boats.

Most of our clients are coming from long distance, without any knowledge of the local market.

After many years of experience in the local market, we are well aware of qualified technicians and well named dealers and yacht equipment providers.

We put this knowledge at the buyers’ disposal, by providing contact details of trustable technicians and providers so, they can get a quote directly from them. After the agreement for the services and the equipment they wish to buy, we follow up the process (delivery, installation, paperwork) to ensure that our clients will get what they have paid for.

Here at YD Yachts, we can aid you through the boat buying process, from making an offer, to sea trial, survey and ownership transfer.

We are skilled in managing international transactions and able to make the arrangements required for the yacht transportation and delivery. YD Yachts has helped boat buyers from many countries to purchase various kinds of yachts in Greece and elsewhere.

Contact information of the clients who have already trusted YD Yachts can be given upon request.

The start of our career in the yachting field was in the middle of the 80’s with the purchase of several yachts for charter use in Greece. Later on, in 1989, we started our first yacht charter office, which we continued for 8 years. Throughout this course of time, we acquired a lot of useful information about how to criticize a boat properly and had the chance to get to meet a high amount of yacht owners.

From 1997 and beyond, we are exclusively running as a yacht brokerage company, following one basic rule; respect not only the buyers, but the sellers as well. The yachts that are offered are always inspected carefully.

Used boats are not guaranteed to be as good as new, however, through us you will know the exact and absolute truth about the boat’s condition without any sugar coating. We do not want to have a company that is built upon lies, but a company that is built upon its customers. In other words, we believe that a company will grow as long as the clients are satisfied, which is what we are trying to achieve.

YD Yachts can also assist in pointing you towards the right direction for other yachting extras such as yacht insurance, winter storage, marina berths and equipment upgrade-renovation. Our multiple years of experience, in addition with our contacts and our relationship with the marinas, boatyards and industry professionals, allow us to provide legitimate and accurate suggestions for our clients.

If you consider selling your current yacht, YD Yachts would be more than pleased to have the opportunity to assist with that. We provide advice to yacht owners about pricing and marketing in order to insure the fastest sale possible at market prices.

YD Yachts is an internet-focused international company and we are ready to aggressively market your yacht on most of the major marketing fronts, including web and email marketing or even direct mail promotions to those that are interested.

Our contact information can be found bellow and you can reach us daily between 10:00 to 20:00. During the weekends, we preferably suggest that you contact us through e-mail instead of calling directly.

Please notice that all prices include YD Yachts Brokerage fees.

Holders of Non- EU Passport with residence outside the European Union and non- EU Companies, can purchase any NO VAT PAID boat, in Greece, without having to worry about the VAT.

In their case, the only expenses are for exporting the boat from the EU plus the payment of  the solicitors who will undertake (for the buyers)  the monitoring of the process for the cancellation of the boat from the Greek Ship’s Registry.

For all above the cost is not more than 1600€.

More in: https://www.ydyachts.com/faq/can-i-purchase-a-yacht-under-greek-flag-vat-exempt/

If the buyer is an EU physical person, the VAT must be paid in Greece, during the procedure for the cancellation of the boat from the Greek Registry.

Holders of non-EU passports (UK Citizen also), EU citizen with residence out of EU (with official proofs), and EU yacht charter companies, can purchase a “No VAT Paid” boat under Greek Flag, VAT EXEMPT.

1. For the Non- EU buyers (physical persons and Companies) the additional expenses are 1600 euro for:

i. The exportation fees and the payment of the Customs broker who will undertake this process (exportation) for the buyer. ii. The payment of the solicitors (who act on behalf of the buyer) for the monitoring of the case, checking all documents, and confirming that the sellers hold ready all documentation for the cancellation of the boat from the Greek Registry. They will also undertake the translation of the Deletion Certificate in English and the process to get the seal Apostille on this document (if necessary). ii. The process so they buyer to get the Transit Log from the Greek Customs after the buyer gets the new registration, and all documents related (as the same will become non-EU flagged boat).

The Transit Log (in some countries they call it “Temporary Importation”) is VERY IMPORTANT document and is directly related to the “VAT EXEMPT” process (more details on request)

2. EU VAT Registered yacht charter companies can purchase any boat under Greek Flag with status “VAT exempt”, on condition the INTRA- EUROPEAN UNION TRADE rules are fulfilled.

For EU yacht charter companies and EU physical persons, the additional cost (for the payment of the solicitors) is ~700 euro since there is no need for the boat to be exported.

IN ALL CASES, the boat can leave the present location in Greece, ONLY after is deleted from the Greek Registry, and the buyer gets Transit Log from the Greek Customs ( for the non-EU flagged boats ).

The condition of the boat is not the only parameter that will guide the prospective buyer to pursue to the purchase of a specific boat. The VAT – whether it is paid or not – is a matter that many prospective buyers (especially EU Citizen) should take into serious consideration. The amount needed for the payment of VAT is frequently the main factor in order the buyer to express his interest to a specific boat or to reject it without even visiting the boat to check its condition.  As regards a boat under Greek flag used for chartering, VAT should be paid when sold to a private individual, EU physical person, for personal use. The payment takes place in Greece, in the Customs (for boats up to 10 years old) or, Seller’s Tax Office for boats over 10 years old.

Below you can see the valuation system according to the Law 4569/2018 (Articles 10a) and 10b) for the pleasure boats:

10.a) The taxable value of a recreational vessel, for which an obligation arises to pay VAT following termination of the charter license or cessation of business activity, is based on the initial price to the first owner, following the completion of the building or structure. If that does not reveal the exact date of construction, will run from 1 January of the year of construction of a recreational vessel, as revealed by any relevant shipping document or document issued by the yard. In the event that there is not a document or documentary evidence, which shows the initial value of the recreational vessel, the same determined by written confirmation of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (NEE)

The resulting value in the above decreases due to age as follows:

after the completion of the first year 20% ,

The second year 25%

The third year 30%

The fourth year 35 %

Fifth year 40%

10.b) At the same time, the insurance policy of the boat, which is in force at the time of the tax claim, is presented, and in case of doubt of the insured value by the tax or customs authority, the insurance contracts of the previous two years are presented. If the insurance value is greater than the ship’s price, as it appears after its impairment, due to its age, this value is taken into account for determining the taxable value.

After finishing the VAT payment procedure, the Customs, or the Seller’s Tax Office, provides the seller a receipt for VAT payment for the specific boat. In our turn, we give this receipt for payment to the buyer along with the official translation in English.

All boats under Greek Flag have an “Official Registration, Class A “. This Registry allows for an easy check to whether the yacht has a mortgage and other legal bindings or restrictions. However, a yacht under Greek Flag cannot be Deleted from the Greek Registration Record without the specific procedure required. Therefore, reassuring that the boat is free from all encumbrances, maritime liens and any other bindings. This way, the purchase of a boat under Greek Registry is totally legitimate and the Buyer can feel 100% safe.

Especially, for the purchase of a yacht under Greek Flag with professional license (charter yacht), it is recommended to have a solicitor for checking the status of the boat in the books of the Greek Ships’ Registry, (before and on the date of the application for the Cancellation Certificate), for monitoring all the purchase procedure, including the payment of the corresponding V.A.T (if due). Also, to verify the documentation of the Seller before the date and on the date of the application for the Cancellation Certificate from the Greek Registry and to obtain the translation of all the Official Certificates and documents from the Greek Authorities regarding the purchase, transfer and taxation of the Vessel. YD Yachts, will assure you of the lowest fees possible!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking of cost in terms of what resale value will be years later. You don’t recover your costs with a new boat, and you won’t recover them with a refurbished used one either. While you’ll probably get more than you paid, you won’t take a lot. What you spend is not an investment, but for your own pleasure.

As a broker I see numerous refurbishing projects, the majority of which lavish money on aesthetics but ignoring fundamentals. But surveyors are not impressed with fancy leather, Travertine marble and designer furnishings. They consider in structures and basic systems. Know that when it comes time to sell, your project will be largely judged by fundamentals, not aesthetics. If you shortcut the quality of basic systems, it will adversely affect the resale value.

Surveyors and knowledgeable buyers will be more impressed with good quality and attention to detail on basic systems such as machinery, plumbing and wiring than designer carpet and sculptured glass. It tells the observer that the seller knew what he was doing and put his money where it counted most, on systems that are sound and reliable.

Approached with knowledge and understanding projects can be fun and rewarding. Projects that are fully estimated, adequately funded, and with sufficient time allotted, usually move ahead smoothly and without major hassles. You’ll end up with a nearly new boat for far less than the cost of a new one, and one which will be a “hot item” on the resale market.

Keep always in mind that a clean and presentable boat can sell better from a “smelly” and neglected one!!!!!!!!!

When evaluating a budget for a used boat, think of the price in terms of what a new boat costs, for this puts the matter of cost in its proper perspective. Since the choice is between new and used, the difference in cost must be a factor in assessing what it will cost to own a used boat. There is a reason why a 10 years old boat is devaluated 50% or even more: its called wear and tear. It has a serious worth of lost value, which the most part of this amount would be required to bring it back to tiptop shape.

The next important consideration is how much can be spent for refurbishment.

The biggest mistake that most used boat buyers make, is to grossly underestimate the cost of putting things in order, even if they don’t plan to do all that much. A common example is someone who buys a ten-year-old 44 feet sailing cruiser for 200000 Euro and then thinks it only needs another 10000 euro to get it in shape. This, for a boat with a replacement cost of 200000 Euro (considering a price of 400000 when it was new). Obviously, 10000 is not realistic at all, and if that’s all he can afford, he can’t really afford the boat anyway.

From experience, we know that even late model boats require a certain percentage of purchase price to repair defects, engine overhaul, rigging, canvas, upholstery, carpet, upgrade electronics and all the other things that new owners usually attend to. This depends on size and value, but for a 8 to 10 year-old well-kept yacht could typically be about 10% of the price. For a 15 years old boat, that amount rises steadily, mainly because of increasing deferred maintenance, meaning wear and tear that stays worn and torn. By the time the vessel is over 15 years old, deferred maintenance reaches the point where the entire boat may need refurbishing, and we’re no longer talking about 10% but 20% of the sale price, even more.

A very good rule of thumb for estimating refurbishing costs is to allow at least 10-20% of the purchase price for a boat in average condition and up to 50%, or more, for one in poor condition. These numbers assume that most the expenses go to engine, machinery, various systems and interiors. However, more extensive refits require even more (such as repainting and major interior renovations or new equipment additions) and are not beyond the bounds of being a reasonable investment. Ultimately, it all depends on the replacement cost, purchase price and how far you want to go toward making the yacht look and function like new.

That’s the reason why buying an older vessel and only allotting a 10% repair budget is not always quite realistic. In that case, you own a boat that is still on the downward slide and your deferred maintenance and costs only continue to escalate as things break down and deteriorate at an ever-increasing rate. And if you can not afford it, this is not an enviable position to be in. It can really take the pleasure out of boating. If you’re looking at a larger boat than you would ordinarily consider, just because it is older and the price is lower, you need to re- consider of something smaller.

Many refits got off-track because the owner became distracted with luxurious interiors and fancy items while neglecting a pair of worn out engines or other important systems. When an engine goes “bang” the owner comes up short because he spent all his money elsewhere. For this reason it is imperative to schedule all work by priority. For example, restoring major systems to reliability must always come first, before considering cosmetics and amenities.

A TIP: A short use of the boat (after purchasing) will help you to put things in priority, easier.

A last word about budgeting: if your budget it tight, allow a part of your total budget for the unexpected. No matter how well you plan, there will always be an unexpected problem. If no problems arise, you can buy the electric winch will make your life easier on board or even Valentino signed plates for the galley.

Get good advice, hire the right people, plan carefully and the end result will be a project customized to your own satisfaction and, definitely, one which you can be proud of.

We, at YD YACHTS, always take into consideration these issues above when advising the sellers for what is the reasonable asking price for their boats.

A fair purchase price makes always the difference!!!!

Most people want to buy a brand-new boat and rationalize it by saying, “Well, I don’t want to fool around with all the breakdowns and problems involved with a used boat. I want a new one that’s free of all that hassle.” You know the argument; we’ve all used it. Boaters who’ve had the experience of fitting out a new yacht know that they’re hardly trouble free.

And the cost? Financing a new boat purchase over ten, twelve or fifteen years is hardly good economics when the average period of ownership is probably less than six to eight years. What could give you more of a sinking feeling than to have to write a check to the bank when the time comes to sell because you owe more than its worth? That can really take the pleasure out of boating.

The point is that more and more yachtsmen are discovering that there are really great values to be had in used boats, particularly older ones that have reached the point where the shine is gone, the style is no longer the latest, the engine is blowing smoke and the interior is a bit more than just worn. The one great advantage of considering purchasing and refurbishing an older yacht is the tremendous differential in the cost of new.

A new boat 44 feet that sells for 400000 euro, might have a resale value of 200000 Euro eight or ten years later (especially if this boat has been used for charter). That’s a whopping difference of 200000 Euro, so it doesn’t take much imagination to see what could be done in the way of refurbishment with even half that amount.

The majority of yachts offered through our website are owned either by individuals or family operated charter companies (owners of 2-10 boats) and they are located in Greece.

This is mainly due to the fact that:

  • Because of  high competition, the charter boats of this category are usually far better kept and maintained, comparing to the boats owned by the big charter firms.
  • We know these yachts very well (in many cases, as from “Day One”), and we can send reliable information pertaining to the vessels, prior to the condition survey.

We are also in contact with yacht owners in other destination at East Mediterranean (Turkey, Croatia and Italy), in order to be able to offer more alternatives to potential buyers. For the boats located out of Greece, we claim to see full condition survey reports and/or reliable information about the present condition (photos mainly up today).

We understand that a potential buyer would want to be absolutely certain regarding the validity of the information that is listed, especially in such a big and sometimes confusing market.

Prior to listing a boat for sale, we always check the ownership, to make sure that the seller has the marketable title and the right to sell the boat.

The broker must provide the potential buyer information related to the aesthetical part of the boat and, if the broker is quite experienced, information about any defects may have been detected by the broker during his visit to the boat.

Most sellers describe their boats (usually) as “excellent”, “immaculate” or use similar words.

So, it is very important for the broker to make a preliminary inspection to the boat, prior to listing for sale.

It is an absolutely loss of time and money for the potential buyer (and also for the broker) to have a neglected or/and unseaworthy boat listed for sale.

Furthermore, after evaluating the present state of the boat, we can safely advise the sellers for a reasonable asking price.

We have inspected, physically, the vast majority of the boats that are listed for sale with us.

For the ones that are not inspected by us, we ask from the seller a full report of the present condition of the boat or/and photos from “critical points”, validating the sea worthiness. In any case we always inform the potential buyers that we have not inspected these boats ourselves.

The information we provide the potential buyers is true and correct, and the photos shown in our lists are from the actual boats (with the name of the boat), not from sister ships or brochures, unless it is specifically mentioned otherwise.

On this point, we must make clear that a yacht broker IS NOT the person who will give any kind of guarantee to potential buyers, that the boat is free from structural defects (or hidden defects), or if the equipment is in working condition.

The SELLERS must be aware of a basic rule: what is listed in the inventory provided to the Broker MUST be in working condition. There is no meaning of listing an Autopilot, not working, or a plotter with “dead” Screen!!!!!!

It is always for the potential buyer to hire a qualified surveyor to conduct a condition survey in the boat (s) that he is interested in. We highly recommend all potential buyers to do so.

Like this, they will have the best possible knowledge of the real condition of the boat and will proceed safely to a realistic offer.

The majority of the Greek Flagged boats are being used for charter.

Between early May until late October, the charter boats have charter obligations.

During this period, viewing is not possible because the boats get charters from several locations in Greece.

Even for the ones that remain in the same location, the inspection is not possible, since the owners have very limited time to prepare the boat for the next charter. Most of the times, the next clients are already “on the spot”, pressing for early embarkation.

It is highly recommended to potential buyers do not to make arrangements for viewing boats during this period.

The owners of the private boats, use their boats between early June until late September. Viewing those boats is also quite difficult, since sometimes the location is not easily reachable.

After the end of October, it is definitely the best time for all potential buyers to inspect the boats of their interest, not only because the boats are free from obligations (charter e.t.c) but, most importantly, they will have the time necessary for a more thorough inspection.

First look: Y Yachts’ Y Breeze – a 75ft daysailer? (sold with crew included!)

  • Toby Hodges
  • June 22, 2023

A brand new 75ft 'luxury daysailer' concept, the Y Breeze YB75, has been unveiled by Michael Schmidt’s Y-Yachts. Toby Hodges got an exclusive chat to the design team behind this radical luxury yacht

y d yachts

Y-Yachts has unveiled a fascinating new 75ft luxury daysailer concept, the Y Breeze.

Y-Yachts founder Michael Schmidt, the veteran racing sailor, industry pioneer and former Hanse Yachts owner, is known for his innovation, particularly with a focus on making yachts simple, fun and approachable. The YBreeze YB75 strips things back to that – right back.

The YB75  is designed to be ultra clean and easy to sail. The sale of each boat will even include a crewmember to ensure it’s always ready for that quick sunset sail.

“For the last 30 years the number of powerboats have been increasing. Now it’s time to go back to sailing – with something eco and cool,” Schmidt told us at the announcement of the YBreeze project in his Y-Yachts office and home in Palma, Mallorca.

Designed by Cossutti Yacht Design, with an interior described as exclusive luxury by Gabriel Chipperfield’s Studio Wendover, the YB75 is reminiscent of some of the iconic Wally Yachts. Indeed the high bulwarks echo that of the 43m Esense .

y d yachts

High bulwarks create a very clean aesthetic while allowing for a safe, protected, walk around deck on the YBreeze

These bulwarks serve both aesthetical and practical purposes. Schmidt wanted the looks so clean that even stanchions could be avoided. The bulwarks give the required safe height for a full walkaround deck.

Further aft these bulwarks help conceal the steering consoles when not in use. And then, towards the transom, we see a feature adopted by powerboats of late: the bulwarks fold out like wings to create a vast sunbathing deck. The YB75 will be the first sailing yacht to feature such a system.

y d yachts

As well as looking ultra clean, the aim of the YB75 is to offer the comfort of a comparable powerboat. So while the decks are devoid of lines and clutter, a galley unit can rise up from below the deck. And Y-Yachts is devising its own standalone removable sunbeds including gimballing versions for the aft deck. Removable or fixed biminis can also cover this area.

A glance at the accommodation plan will show there is no interior space in the aft third of the boat, but instead a large garage for toys and dive gear.

75ft of instant fun

Making the boat easy to use is so important when comparing to the power market, believes Schmidt (and he knows from his experience with Fjord motor yachts) – hence crew will be included in the price!

“Each boat we sell we’ll sell with a crewmember,” Schmidt explained. “So you can call and say ‘in one hour I want to go sailing’ and the boat will be ready.”

Y-Yachts is even studying fenders that can automatically deploy and inflate. “We’re trying to avoid the hassle of having to ‘prepare and de-prepare a sailboat,” said Schmidt.

“We saw people buying power but getting bored quickly,” commented Y-Yachts head of design Francesca Modica. “The challenge was to make such a dayboat a sail boat.”

y d yachts

The YBreeze is designed to be allow owners to get off the dock quickly for fun, simple sailing

The YB75 is designed to appeal to owners who have houses in the sailing playgrounds of Palma, Sardinia and St Tropez areas. An app will not only be used to control the boat but Schmidt envisages it allowing multiple owners to share a boat.

Why this size? I asked. “It’s the best way to show the sexy concept – 55ft is too small I think… it’s a toy not an explorer,” he replied.

The YB75 is the largest project yet for the Italian designers and ORC specialists Cossutti, who first discussed Schmidt’s latest brainchild with him in September last year. The sheerline is particularly clever: modern, bold and actually relatively straight it helps disguise the bulwarks and coachroof which extends so far forward.

After analysing the type of Med sailing location the prospective owner will use, typically the Balearics/Costa Smerelda/south France, Cossutti found that 90% of the time the wind averages around 10 knots. So they chose a narrow hull with a low wetted surface.

“The idea is to have fun without needing many people on board, hence the water ballast,” Maurizio Cossutti explained. A tonne of water ballast will offset the need for lots of weight in the keel or crew on the rail.

Cossutti calculates that the YB75 will be competitive with a Maxi 72, yet can be handled on a race track by a crew of six as opposed to a team typically three times that size.

y d yachts

In some senses the interior design is a revisit by Gabriel Chipperfield (of Wendover Studio) of the interior his father David did for Schmidt’s first yacht, Cool Breeze . It’s an adaptable space, and while there are berths the expectation is not that owners will spend many nights aboard, instead using it as a daysailer for fun cruising, racing and entertaining.

“We wanted people to go inside and stay inside, not be depressed by it,” Chipperfield said at the project’s unveiling. He has chosen light, sustainable or natural materials, such as leather, timber, rattan and straw. The timber will be surplus material from outfitters of mega yachts.

YBreeze sustainable build

Y-Yachts has placed a strong focus on sustainability for YBreeze. It has already incorporated electric drives in its boats, but Schmidt believes synthetic diesel would be better in terms of carbon footprint for the YB75.

Y-Yachts is also working with a Spanish firm on using their green epoxy which can reportedly be separated and burned after use. And the innovative yard has already spent 18 months investigating ways to avoid moulds with composite yacht manufacturing – stay tuned for more on that and this intriguing project as details are released.

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29.5m

Superyacht SKYFALL is as iconic as the James Bond movie it shares its name with. Owned by an American real estate developer, the 190-foot motor yacht features a distinctive silhouette and a boatload of stand-out amenities including a panoramic sky lounge, a split-level owner’s cabin and a helipad that converts into a basketball court. As well as being highly appealing to owners, she’s a successful charter yacht that’s renowned for her ability to entertain.

SKYFALL was built by American luxury motor yacht builder Trinity Yachts in 2010 for the shipyard’s owner. “SKYFALL is the most exquisite superyacht ever delivered by Trinity Yachts and is a shining example of American craftsmanship and pride,” says Frank Grzeszczak Sr of FGI Yacht Group. “In a market where yachts of her size are rarely this versatile, SKYFALL stands out as a unique offering. With a Bahamas-friendly draft, aluminum construction, speeds exceeding 20 knots, a flexible seven-cabin layout—including a bi-level primary suite—and expansive lounges, SKYFALL sets herself apart from others in her class.”

The current owner bought her in 2018 from an American automobile tycoon and completed a full refit in 2020, including elegant, timeless interiors by designers Patrick Knowles and Even Marshall. Now, as the owner builds a new, larger, 270-foot yacht with an Italian shipyard, they’ve reluctantly put SKYFALL up for sale.

As SKYFALL enters the market with FGI , the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, gives Forbes an exclusive look at life onboard the yacht and reveals his favorite experiences and spaces, as well as his top tips for superyacht ownership.

What initially captivated you about SKYFALL?

Owner: SKYFALL is an iconic yacht. She really has the best of all worlds. She has semi displacement which means she is fast and efficient. She also has a shallow draft that allows her to get into anchorages or ports that other similar sized boats can’t even try to get into. In the Bahamas, for example, it is typical for SKYFALL to be anchored close to shore while other 60-meter (190-foot) boats are a mile or more offshore.

What are your favourite memories onboard SKYFALL?

We have had a lot of fun with family and friends on SKYFALL. The list of great memories onboard is quite long. The bridge deck outdoor dining table is where we always try to have meals unless the weather is very bad. We have had a lot of great discussions with family and friends around that table that will last a lifetime. We also like that the sundeck that has two hot tubs with plenty of space, which is where we have pre-dinner canapes every night while we watch the sun set wherever we might be.

One thing that often grabs people’s attention is the basketball goal that also is a helideck on the sundeck. We have had a lot of competitive games of basketball on sundeck, sometimes with a number of spectators watching from afar.

The top deck of SKYFALL features a basketball court, helipad, pool, hot tub and dining area

What is your favourite space onboard?

The sky lounge is group favorite. It has twin 80-inch TVs, so there isn’t a bad place in the sky lounge to view a game.

Please talk us through the owner’s cabin and how you designed it to suit your lifestyle.

The owner’s cabin on SKYFALL is exactly what we wanted on a boat. The master bed faces the bow with large windows which means we get to wake up every morning to an amazing view. The sitting area is perfect for getting a break from guests when we just need some time to ourselves. The suite also has ‘His and Hers’ separate baths and closets, which is a requirement for us. My wife and I always say that the key to a long and happy marriage is separate bathrooms and closets.

The office in the master suite is a welcome retreat for me so I can get work done privately without being disturbed, and more importantly, without waking up my wife.

A cabin onboard SKYFALL superyacht

Where are your favourite places to visit around the world?

It has always been non-negotiable for our family that we spend New Year’s together in Saint Bart’s on the boat. In early spring, she spends a few weeks in the Bahamas, and then typically we send her over to the Med for the summer season. She then comes back for a quick yard period in the fall, does the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and then makes her way back to the Caribbean.

What makes SKYFALL such a successful charter yacht?

The feedback from charter guests has been that this is a great multi-generational boat. We have all the fun toys for kids, and lots of relaxing spaces for adults. Three generations in a family can travel together and have a great trip for different reasons. With the multitude of large beds, it is also a great boat for several couples to travel together.

Interiors are elegant and timeless

What first inspired you to become a yacht owner?

Our family had been chartering yachts for about 12 years. More and more we found ourselves wanting to spend time on the water. We had been loosely talking about buying a yacht when we started attending the annual Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I’m not an impulse buyer, but when we found a boat that we thought would work for our lifestyle, we knew (or rather, my wife knew) that was the boat for us.

What does yacht ownership give you that villa or a hotel ownership couldn’t?

We often talk about how owning a yacht allows you to basically have a home nearly anywhere in the world. We like new places, and we like to explore, but we like to have a familiar home base to come back to at the end of a long day. A yacht gives you the advantage of being in the Med in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter sleeping in the same bed every night.

Guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor dining areas

Why have you decided to put SKYFALL on the sales market – and why now?

We are building a new boat, and it is time to let this one go. We are sad to part with her, but we hope she will find a new family that will create many new memories on her as we have.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to the next owner of SKYFALL?

Have fun with her. That’s what she is for. This boat loves to be used so if you have a destination in mind, she’s ready to go.

The decks have plenty of space for entertainment and relaxation

Want to be the new owner of SKYFALL? Here’s how

SKYFALL is currently for sale for an asking price of $29,500,000. Interested parties should contact the broker, Frank Grzeszczak Sr, Founder & President at FGI Yacht Group , who says: “Simply put, SKYFALL is the finest American superyacht available today. The price has recently been adjusted to $29,500,000, reflecting the seller's commitment to securing a fair price for this extraordinary vessel.”

America’s New Climate Delusion

The U.S. could sink billions into curbing emissions without altering the fate of the places climate change affects most.

A Valero refinery behind the backyard of a house in Chalmette, Louisiana

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

Gray Stream’s family has thrived in Louisiana oil country for generations. One great-aunt was the heir to an oil fortune. (She was also a prominent Fabergé-egg collector .) His grandmother inherited large tracts of land, partially dedicated to oil and gas production. His father opened a country club in Lake Charles, where the tanks and twisted towers of an oil refinery arc along the shore. The evening I met Stream, he had spent all day helping pick the next president of a local university that had recently opened an “ LNG Center of Excellence ” to support the liquid-natural-gas industry.

But Stream is trying something new, something that might make him look like an outlier in his family: He wants to be among the first in the state to try stuffing the carbon emissions from petroleum back underground, ostensibly for all time. This business, carbon capture and sequestration—Stream intends to do the sequestration part—is widely said to be a necessary, if untested, solution to climate change. And the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden administration’s blockbuster climate bill, has set up the country to spend billions of dollars, maybe tens of billions, to spur the industry’s expansion and make it profitable.

Stream’s new company, Gulf Coast Sequestration, is hoping to get a permit—once the state starts issuing them—to inject carbon dioxide into vacant pockets under his family’s properties. Louisiana’s geology is ideal for storing carbon, and because the IRA is giving oil and gas companies a tax credit for capturing and stashing their carbon, the industry is all in. Roughly one-third of proposed carbon-capture-and-sequestration projects in the United States are here. For Stream, this business is appealing not as a climate solution but as a way to keep thriving in oil country. It’s a complement to his other ventures, which include a Texas-based energy business, a company that manages oil and gas exploration on his family’s lands, and a wetlands-restoration service. “You always try to keep creating new value for the future,” he told me.

In some ways, Louisiana’s carbon-capture push fits neatly into the climate plan that the world’s governments recently agreed to. At last winter’s United Nations climate conference, in Dubai, the assembled countries committed to collectively moving away from fossil fuels and aggressively pursuing lower-emissions technologies—including carbon capture. The agreement aims to avoid more of the kind of climate-related damage Louisiana already lives with, as more intense storms and higher sea levels erode the coast and push people inland.

But carbon capture is, if anything, helping the oil and gas industry justify its continued operations, and the march of new LNG terminals along Louisiana’s shoreline. The question of whether climate change will reshape our world has a clear answer: It already has. But the question of how people will reshape our world in response is wide open. One possibility is that people will make dramatic changes—creating entirely new industries meant to curb emissions—and still fail to alter the fate of places such as Louisiana.

The liquid-natural-gas facilities that have been going up along the Gulf Coast are one of the great contradictions of Joe Biden’s presidency. In recent years, LNG expansion has been justified by American foreign-policy interests—supplying European allies with gas to replace what they had sourced from Russia. As demand in Europe for American LNG is set to peak within a year, thanks to Europe’s renewable build-out, the security argument for exporting natural gas is falling apart. But the economic argument is not. By the end of last year , China was becoming American LNG’s new favorite customer , and the United States was the world’s top exporter of LNG.

Before the U.S. had a foreign-policy reason for selling natural gas, though, it had a climate argument for supporting the industry. Two decades ago, gas executives said expanding natural-gas production would help wean the world off dirtier energy sources, such as coal. And it did, for a while. During the Obama years, America’s progress in lowering emissions came largely from swapping out coal for gas. But after the fracking boom left the country awash in more gas than anyone wanted to buy, Congress lifted its ban on gas exports, which changed the math of gas emissions. To transport natural gas, it must be supercooled to a liquid, loaded onto refrigerated tankers, and then regasified someplace across the world. This all takes energy to do. LNG’s climate advantage over coal becomes questionable, even nonexistent , especially if the gas delays other countries’ transition to renewable energy sources.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration paused approvals of new LNG-export facilities, citing the need for climate-related vetting and to suss out the exports’ effect on domestic gas prices (they have reportedly raised the cost of gas for Americans). That was welcome news to John Allaire, who is determined to shut down the LNG plants next to his property in Cameron, Louisiana. He’s the reason the state knows that a nearby plant built by Venture Global flared almost daily during its first months of operation, despite a promise that it would do so rarely; he also reports any permit violations he sees at the site of a now-paused Commonwealth plant, which borders his own yard.

Allaire isn’t against fossil fuels. He was an oil and gas man for 30 years—an environmental engineer who worked in refining and then exploration and drilling. He’s also a made-in-America kind of guy, who flies an American flag by his driveway and wears an American-flag baseball cap. He’s proud that the projects he worked on fueled American industry. But destroying the fragile coastal ecosystem to send natural resources to other countries—especially when, in his view, the U.S. and everyone else will have to go fully renewable in the next 30 or 40 years—just makes us chumps, he told me.

After all, burning more gas doesn’t square with the world’s agreement to transition away from fossil fuels. The Biden administration has set a goal of 2025 for a pollution-free energy sector and 2050 for an economy that produces no net emissions at all, which will certainly require more renewables (if not necessarily 100 percent). Emissions are meant to go down, sharply. But, should each of the new LNG plants under construction or planned come online, the U.S. will be set up to keep exporting LNG for at least 30 years from now, contributing more emissions annually than the entire European Union . The idea of capturing that much carbon isn’t even on the table. And the Biden administration’s pause could fall apart soon: A Trump-appointed federal judge sided with Louisiana and 15 other red states that sought to strike it down. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill celebrated the decision, noting LNG’s “enormous and positive impact on Louisiana, supplying clean energy for the entire world, and providing good jobs here at home”—an additional 18,000 jobs and $4.4 billion of contributions to its economy, according to the state. (Most of the jobs that the industry has created have been temporary construction jobs.) A Harris administration may fight to keep the pause in place, or it may not; if Donald Trump is reelected, he has promised that the LNG building spree will resume.

Allaire doesn’t want to abandon this quiet and rugged place, where migrating birds flock to the brackish marsh and he can walk sea-glass-strewn beach for miles. But if LNG plants presage future dangers from climate change, they also compound the work of surviving on Louisiana’s eroding coast. The last hurricane left a 30-foot shrimp boat marooned next door to Allaire’s plot, several hundred feet inland. The LNG plant beside Allaire plans to build a sea wall. But what if a storm still damages the facility? Explosions are not out of the question at LNG terminals. Allaire, his RV, his garden, his duck pond, and his three dogs would be right in the middle of a disaster zone.

Already, the plants are giving people a reason to leave. Some locals certainly think as the attorney general does, that the plants could be an economic boon. But around Cameron, if you don’t work for the oil and gas companies, you’re likely fishing or shrimping. When massive tankers come to pick up the liquid gas, “you hear the wave coming way before you see it”—wakes that can make fishing boats nose-dive under the water, Travis Dardar, a shrimper who worked in Cameron for years, told me. If another plant is built here, he said, no fisherman will be able to stay.

Climate change had already driven Dardar inland to Cameron: He grew up on Isle de Jean Charles, a largely Native community in the bayou now famous for being almost entirely displaced by rising seas. But any number of bayou towns are emptying out. Justin Solet, a former oil-rig worker, drove me through his hometown, Dulac, which consists of one road flanked by water on either side. When he was young, the bayou teemed with life, before the BP oil spill in 2010. Now the water is rising, in part because pipeline canals have sliced away the land, and the school, the grocery store—everything but one restaurant—have shut down. “This is forced migration with a smile,” Solet told me—not an exodus, but a slow trickle of people moving from town to town, until the old ways of life are too frayed to hold. The Inflation Reduction Act is now funding plans for communities like these to relocate more deliberately: The Houma Nation—which has some 17,000 members, including both Dardar and Solet, in six Louisiana parishes—received $56.5 million to help keep communities safer from storms but also to help them make a plan to leave, eventually.

Dardar’s second move—to Kaplan, farther inland still—had a different source of funding. His kids had developed health issues that his wife, Nicole, suspects are connected to the LNG terminals’ flaring. Dardar’s leadership among fishermen whose docks have been taken over by LNG tankers was causing issues in town: Nicole told me their family was followed one day by a black SUV. Then came Hurricanes Delta and Laura in 2020; they returned to find that all that remained of their two trailers, three trucks, and three boats was the concrete slab the trailers had sat on. Venture Global had offered several times to pay Dardar to move away, he told me. (The company did not reply to my question about this.) After refusing twice, he took the third offer in 2023. It was time to go.

The oil and gas industry, by contrast, is building to stay, however shaky the idea of siting LNG terminals on spits of land that feel more than anything like fingernails of sand afloat in the sea. And carbon capture is becoming a key part of the industry’s argument for its future—more emissions aren’t a problem, it says, if they can be stashed underground.

Precisely because of oil and gas exploration, geologists know more about the underground parts of Louisiana than almost any other place in the world, which makes it appealing for carbon capture, says Daniel Sutter, the vice president for storage and energy solutions at Climeworks, a start-up that plans to store captured gas beneath Gray Stream’s family land. Southwestern Louisiana has the right layers of reliable caprock and porous sandstone formations that could hypothetically trap carbon gas for hundreds of years , after which it will dissolve into the salt water deep underground and no longer be a flight risk. But Louisiana also has thousands of boreholes from abandoned oil and gas wells, which leak some 300,000 metric tons of methane each year. Skeptics wonder if they’d serve as escape routes for injected carbon too. (Sutter told me those wells either aren’t deep enough to matter or are vetted for safety by a review process.)

Still, no one has done carbon capture and sequestration successfully at scale yet. Even the most hyped projects have managed to capture and store only a fraction of what they promised to. Climeworks’ job, as part of a consortium funded by the Department of Energy, is to prove it can do the capture part: It’ll build a facility demonstrating that siphoning carbon dioxide out of the air, rather than at an industrial operation, is possible (and economically feasible, which it currently is far from being).

If everything goes as planned, the carbon that Climeworks captures will count against the world’s total emissions budget, and will perhaps have a marginal benefit for stabilizing Earth’s atmosphere. But most of the other carbon-capture projects proposed in Louisiana are attached to oil and gas endeavors; Stream told me that the carbon from the Climeworks project would represent a small part of his company’s portfolio, which would focus more on commercial clients. The oil and gas industry argues that the world still needs its product, and that this semblance of carbon stewardship justifies them providing it. In a sense, the U.S. government agrees: IRA tax credits cover (at a somewhat lower rate) even projects in which oil companies use the captured carbon for more oil drilling. In those cases, the carbon goes toward forcing more petroleum from nearly empty wells—perhaps the least climate-friendly use of the technology imaginable.

People involved in carbon capture say that humanity needs it. And the IPCC has said that, without carbon removal, countries’ current emissions-cutting plans will not avoid the most significant climate impacts. But the same IPCC report ranks carbon capture and sequestration among the most expensive solutions, with the least potential for impact. At the United Nations’ COP meeting in Dubai last year, then–U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry warned that carbon capture must be used judiciously, and not as an excuse for building more fossil-fuel projects. Some academics warn that the IRA tax credit could offer exactly that.

In Louisiana, new LNG terminals are now being proposed with carbon capture attached. Each new terminal represents greenhouse-gas emissions of up to 9 million tons. Carbon capture cannot yet hope to keep up. Climeworks’ DOE-funded project hopes to capture just 1 million tons a year, and likely won’t begin building until several years from now. Meanwhile, Louisiana produces more than 216 million tons of greenhouse gases a year. The entire state is operating under a logic that cannot hold: As its population faces acute consequences of climate change, its central, carbon-heavy industry is digging in its heels. Even if carbon capture is technically necessary as long as other decarbonization attempts fall short, it very quickly starts to look less like a solution to climate change and more like part of a future that the fossil-fuel industry designed for itself. Louisiana is the prototype.
