We were a group of 8 adults and 2 small children ( ages 4 and 1 ) and this was the perfect trip. The entire crew was excellent! The sailing was steady, the views beautiful, the lunch and drinks delicious, and the swimming and snorkeling in crystal clear turquoise waters amazing! There was plenty of time to enjoy each part of the trip, very fun and relaxing!
Sailing, swimming, and snorkeling fun!
One of the best day’s in Puerto Rico, ever! This excursion is affordable, fun and it was an amazing experience! Went to Icacos Island and snorkeling nearby. The staff was awesome and it felt safe and fun at the same time. (open bar and buffet) was awesome. I definitely high recommend!!
Excellent Excursion
This catamaran trip was AWESOME! One of the best things I’ve experienced vacationing in Puerto Rico. First of all I want to thank Jorge one of the crew members for making this trip a great experience, he made sure my family and I had food, drinks and was very informative on the sights. Thank you for helping make great memories!
catamaran trip was AWESOME!
This was my second excursion with East Island Excursions and they did it again! We were a family of four (with a 5 yr old). Fun was had by all…I could not keep my 5 year old off the water-slide 🙂 Food was great and a great atmosphere.
Did it again!
Took the Icacos Island tour with East Island Excursions. Loved every bit of the tour. Truly professional, friendly and helpful crew. The places we were taken to were exotic and I just loved it . My phone which had most of the pics and memories got drenched in the sea water and died and Levi one of the member of the crew member truly felt our anxiety took pictures for us and sent it later . Wonderful guy. I am not a swimmer but took the plunge with the help of Moises from the crew team . I would recommend East Island Excursions and Levi to anyone visiting Puerto Rico and taking the Island tours
Loved the Icacos Island tour with East Island Excursions
Loved our visit to Icacos with East Island Excursions. Originally we had booked for Vieques, but due to weather, we could not go there. East Island was very prompt in calling us every day and giving us an update. In the end, they even offered to shift us to Icacos on priority and refunded the balance amount. Their boats are amazing and look luxurious. The staff is insanely friendly, offer great food and drinks and snorkeling tips. Had a lovely time with East Island. Will definitely try Vieques tour with them next time I am in San Juan.
Great tour company, especially for Snorkelling
This was a family trip that we all enjoyed, but must of all, I loved the crew, excellent customer service…. constantly taking care of every customer…. Thanks so much from the family Quijada-Morales to: Alexandra, Ismael, Moises & I cant remember the name of the 4th crew member… you all were great & made our experience unforgettable….excellent service…. Keep up with the great service guys, & definitely we will return back to one of your trips on our next vacation to Puerto Rico…. we are from Atlanta, GA…..sm
Unforgettable Trip to Icacos
This is my second time in two years traveling with East Island Excursions – and they really do a great job! You will NOT be disappointed. They are very easy to make reservations with and they call with reminders, The staff is extremely friendly, the boat clean and the overall experience is amazing. There are two stops – one at Icacos Island and another at another site where the coral is. You will see a bunch of beautiful things! And the water is amazingly crystal blue . You’ll arrive around 9am to check in, leave at 9:30am and be back at the dock around 3:30 pm. A great activity for all ages – my family thoroughly enjoyed. They serve you food and rum drinks too! Just an overall great time!
We took 2 tours with East Island–snorkeling and the Amazing Grace. Highly recommend this company. Classy. Everything done well.
Visiting from Chicago. By all means the highlight of our Vacation. Wow, we had the best time. We booked a snorkeling trip to the Island of Icacos Catamaran Full Day trip. The boat was beautiful, the crew was so friendly and helpful! The captain “William” mingled with everyone and took time to make sure everyone was having a great time. The bartender/cook/organizer Chris was very informative and kept everyone’s attention with important information so as to keep everyone safe and having a great time. The food was a delightful surprise. These guys have it down to a science, Excellent food music and ambiance. This is a must do for the entire family. Will definitely do this again! Love these guys!
2017 Puerto Rico Vacay
Amazing trip to the Icacos island. Even thou it was raining we were still able to enjoy the crystal blue water. The captain and crew are really organized and always on the look out for the well being of the people. Thank you to Capt. William, Daniel, Christian, Neftali and others for your excellent customer service. Thanks to your professionalism during the trip me, my best friend and the kids had a superb experience at Icacos.
Trip to Icacos
I was so glad we got to experience snorkeling like this when we were in Puerto Rico. East lsland excursions was a great company to book with. It was an all day adventure and they provide lunch and service unlimited alcoholic drinks. The crew on the boat was great very friendly and knowledge. Our captain was Ty and he did an amazing job informing us about the water, different sea animals and islands that we past. The gear that they provided was clean and looked new, the boat was kept clean as well. I definitely recommend booking a tour through them for a great experience just remember to bring your sunblock and keep reapplying because we got sun burnt.
Snorkeling fun
Great time at Cayo Icacos. Willy was the best snorkeling guide I’ve ever had and I’ve been to every reef in DR. Great job Willy & Carlos. you guys are awesome.
Cayo Icacos
This is by far the most fulfilling activity I did while in PR. This excursion handles everything you need from food, to drinks and location. First stop is snorkeling and the crew were helpful in explaining all safety concerns, for us and the environment. They served us an incredible lunch complete with pina coladas to refresh from the heat. The 2nd stop was a relaxing beach and they gave us ample time to really enjoy the water and take pictures. I would without a doubt book this trip again and can’t wait to visit 🙂

Mentally, snorkeling can be a great stress reliever. Being in the water and surrounded by marine life can be calming and meditative. Where colorful schools of fish and sea life dart through the vibrant and ancient limestone formations. Make sure to bring an underwater camera if you want to capture the natural beauty of Icacos Island!
After snorkeling, you’ll be able to kick back and enjoy the view over lunch while your vessel navigates toward the world-famous, white sand pool of Icacos Island Beach. Here, you’ll spend two hours lounging on the sand and swimming. After that, we’ll make our way back to the Marina. While your Snorkeling Puerto Rico adventure has come to an end, your memories will last a lifetime.

El Innovation: The Pioneer of Nautical Tourism
The Innovation was built in 1970 as a replica of a US Navy LCPL vessel and was brought to Puerto Rico in 1971 by Captain Greg Korwek. It became the first vessel to transport diving and snorkeling tours in Puerto Rican waters. Since its inauguration into nautical tourism, The Innovation has sailed the seas of Puerto Rico. Now, this pioneering vessel is in Puerto Rican hands, with our team of local guides committed to maintaining its legacy.
El Kraken: Our Newest Vessel
Built in 2022, El Kraken is the newest vessel for our Puerto Rico snorkeling tours. El Kraken has been our recovery story after the devastating Hurricane María in 2017, which sank our catamaran FunCat. After a lot of effort over the past five years, El Kraken is ready to take to the waters of Fajardo, Puerto Rico – and we couldn’t be more excited.
El Kraken is a 46-foot vessel with a maximum capacity of 48 passengers. However, the maximum number of people we’ll bring on board is 40 to guarantee space and better service to our guests.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY
The staff was very friendly. The experience was enjoyable for the whole family. They worked with the children on board to help teach them about sailing and snorkeling.
We have done many snorkeling tour in various places, this tour tops our list. Most “sailing” tours only go to the snorkeling site with the engine running. This tour sailed to and from the beach. We snorkeled at two places and had a two-hour stay on a great beach. Lunch was great and we had plenty to enjoy. I highly recommend Fun Cat Catamaran if you are in Puerto Rico.
We have had a great trip to Puerto Rico and by far, the best thing we’ve done is spent a day on the Fun Cat Catamaran with Capt. Jim and his crew. They were all outstanding!!! The ship was beautiful. The equipment was top notch. The lunch buffet, snacks, and drinks were all delicious. The Pina Coladas were awesome!!! And all of the places we stopped were amazing. Do this tour – you will not be sorry!!!

How to get to Icacos Island Puerto Rico
You basically have two options on getting to Icacos Puerto Rico.
- Private boat
- Island tour
Because most of us don’t own boats, I’m going to focus on the second option.

Icacos Island tours
Not all day tours to Icacos Island Puerto Rico are created equal. You’ll want a reputable tour operator that creates an immersive experience and has the amenities and timeframe you’re looking for.
- Icacos Island Catamaran Cruise. This full-day cruise is honestly a perfect way to spend a day visiting Cayo Icacos! Expect lunch and tropical drinks, too.
- Icacos Island Boat Trip. This 1/2 day cruise just offers light refreshments instead of a full lunch. I love that this tour also offers umbrellas to lounge at the beach.
Tours to Cayo Icacos leave from Fajardo, so you’ll have to consider transportation to the marina, depending on where you’re staying.
I personally enjoyed the Catamaran cruise from Fajardo . This tour struck the perfect balance between adventure and comfort, while providing enough time to relax and adventure on the island as a full day tour.
These tour itineraries are thoughtfully crafted, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration of this uninhabited island. From basking in the sun on the pristine beach to snorkeling adventures, you’re sure to have a good time!
What to expect at Icacos Puerto Rico
Immerse yourself in nature’s beauty, as Mother Nature really nailed it with this island! Create moments that linger in your memory long after your trip concludes.
The way to the island is about a 30 – 45 minute boat ride. You’ll see the beautiful coast of the mainland and Tortuga Reef as you go from Fajardo to Icacos Island.
As you pull up to the from the scenic catamaran ride to the island, the water goes from vivid blue to bright teal – a breathtaking sight to see in the Caribbean!
Your tour should ensure that you have ample time to soak in the sun, explore the underwater wonders and even enjoy water activities.
Amenities on the island
Well, there really aren’t any! Instead of restrooms and restaurants, you’ll see coastal forests, sand dunes and beaches! You’ll need to rely on your catamaran for a restroom and food.
Oh, and make sure you bring the proper beach gear with you – list is below!
Lunch during your tour
Your lunch or food options will vary based on the tour you select . From seafood wraps and tropical fruits to deli meats and alcoholic beverages, there’s a variety of items served on the tour boats and catamarans.
Pro tip: being out in the sun is dehydrating. Remember to drink water and reapply the mineral sunscreen !
Oh, and if you’re prone to motion sickness, be sure to get a full belly so it doesn’t get worse.
Can I swim at Cayo Icacos?
Of course! Icacos Island boasts unspoiled, powdery white-sand beaches and is surrounded by vibrant turquoise waters. So swim until your heart is content! Just be sure to watch for other boats and large waves.
And while most destinations I recommend water shoes , Icacos Puerto Rico isn’t one of them! Similar to Flamenco Beach in Culebra , the luxurious soft sand under toe is amazing!
You’ll want plenty of reef-safe sunblock , a beach hat and rash guard to protect yourself from the sun, though. More recommended items to pack, below.
Note: during the summer months you’ll see some sargassum (seaweed) in the area. This is common across the Caribbean!
Snorkeling at Icacos Island
The island is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Whether you’re an experienced snorkeler or a novice, the opportunity to explore the underwater wonders of Icacos amongst the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico.
Your catamaran will have to transport you from the swimming area to the snorkeling area, which is just a few minutes’ drive away. Full day tours will allow you to spend 30 – 90 minutes of snorkeling , complete with all the necessary gear.
The crystal-clear waters provide visibility that allows you to witness the kaleidoscope of colors beneath the surface at Cayo Icacos.
For those new to snorkeling, fear not; the tour provides equipment and guidance, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all skill levels.
My group saw many fish and colorful reef. Remember the reef-safe mineral sunblock to continue to protect our oceans, reef and marine life!
Marine life while snorkeling at Cayo Icacos
- Hawksbill Sea Turtle
- Green Sea Turtle
- Mutton Snapper
- French Angelfish
- French Grunt
- Queen Angelfish
- Sergeant Major
After snorkeling, swimming and lounging around Icacos Island Puerto Rico, you’ll likely head back into the marina.
Tips for visiting one of the best islands in Puerto Rico
The journey to the island, soaking in the beautiful scenery on the island and snorkeling through the reef provides such a sense of adventure! Here are a few more tips to help ensure your day goes smoothly.
- Icacos Island is busy. It’s not exactly a hidden gem anymore, with a dozen or more boats coming daily. Although you’ll want to step onto an unspoiled island, surrounded by the beauty of nature, consider the other 100 people that will want to do the same.
- Take advantage of water activities! Whether your tour offers a slide, floatables or sun umbrellas and loungers, you paid for it so be sure to enjoy it!
- Use a dry bag during your day. Catamarans are wet places so to ensure your towel, phone and money doesn’t get wet, keep them in a dry bag.
- Motion sickness medication is your friend. If you get queasy while boating or snorkeling, then grab your motion sickness remedy or whatever you need to help you feel your best while on this trip!
- Leave no trace. It’s often used in hiking and outdoorsy travel, but it’s so important to leave this island with zero evidence that you were there. Don’t bring back sand or rocks, don’t disturb vegetation or marine life and definitely no littering.
- Don’t touch or stand on coral. One single fingerprint can kill coral from the oils on your fingers. This fragile ecosystem has a lot to contend with already. Don’t touch or step on coral here, or anywhere in the world’s oceans.
What to pack for the day
As promised, here are the beach essentials you’ll need for your time in Cayo Icacos…
- Ocean-safe mineral sunblock. Chemicals in traditional sunblocks kill our reefs and are harmful to marine life. Use mineral sunscreen when at Icacos Puerto Rico (or any other beach for that matter!)
- Sun hat or rash guard . Minimize how much sunscreen you use and the time it takes to apply it, cover your skin with a sun hat and/or rash guard. They even make rash guards with swimming suits that are super cute.
- Underwater camera. Capture photos of you and/or your loved ones in the water, not to mention all the amazing fish and reef! This is the GoPro I used at the island, and so many other places, like discovering the best things to do in Kihei Maui. Don’t forget the float strap accessory !
- Dry bag. If you want to take your phone, a power bank or even extra GoPro batteries , use a dry bag! I have this dry bag in orange and it’s the perfect size to carry by itself or to place inside a beach bag.
- Beach to wel. Most tours don’t offer beach towels because they’re towing the other essentials like food, drinks and snorkel gear. I love this quick drying beach towel with a hidden pocket for your cell phone, cash or keys.
- Hair care. Protect your hair from the salt water and windy boat. Bring leave-in conditioner , comb or other essentials with you.
- Cash for tip. While you’ll pay for the food and tour in advance, don’t forget to tip your tour guides! A 10% tip is customary for this type of thing in Puerto Rico.
- Travel insurance. Literally anything can happen while you’re on vacation! Take travel insurance with you on your trip to Puerto Rico and Icacos Island.
Things to do near Icacos Island Puerto Rico
There’s so many things to do in this area of Puerto Rico. You’ll definitely want to squeeze a few days into your itinerary for this region!
- El Yunque National Forest. This is the only National Rainforest in the USA, and it’s truly a beautiful one at that. From waterfall hikes to amazing lookout towers with 360-degree views, this is best done as a day trip .
- Flamenco Beach, Culebra. Commonly done as a day trip but better if you can spend a few nights to fully explore the island. Flamenco Beach is world-famous and commonly voted as one of the best in the world. It’s truly impeccable!
- Vieques, Puerto Rico. From the bioluminescent bay to the Black Sand Beach Vieques , there’s a ton to see and do on this island, too. You’ll want at least one night and 2 days here.

Where to stay near Cayo Icacos
There’s a plethora of options to stay in or near Fajardo and your launching point to Icacos Island. Here are a few recommendations:
- El Conquistador Resort. Gorgeous and with an amazing pool, located right near the marina. It’s a stunning property in Fajardo!
- Condado Ocean Club. Closer to Old San Juan, this adults-only hotel in Condado is just what to you need to relax before and after your day tour to the island!
- Palacio Provincial. In the heart of Old San Juan, stay in the middle of the action and take a day trip to Icacos Island from here.
