COVID-19 has brought spare time to many people. Besides heading out on the water, many people on our team have found enjoyment out of keeping up with boating news on social media and YouTube. The Top YouTube Boating Channels for 2021

Boating has become even more popular during the past year. Given its’ appeal, here are the top YouTube boating channels that I follow and you should consider too.

BOAT US (Boater Education)

Boat US is one of the oldest and most respected organizations that represents boaters. This YouTube channel is great because it features lots of meaningful content, specifically, content relating to education, safety, boat types, boat handling techniques and so much more. This is a great foundational channel to subscribe to. In addition, Boat US is an organization you should consider joining . I’ve been a member for over 20 years and love it.

DISCOVER BOATING (Boater Education and Reviews)

Discover Boating is the public awareness effort powered by the North American recreational boating company. This YouTube channel focuses on mostly boat models and boat activities. The goal of this channel is to make new boaters or prospective boaters informed about what type of boat to buy and the boating lifestyle.

BOATTEST.COM (Boat Reviews)

BoatTEST.com has been consistently providing quality content for over 20 years. This YouTube channel has over 3,000 videos that consist of tests, reviews, factory tours and interviews. It’s another foundational channel that you should consider subscribing to.

ZIP ZAP POWER (Boats Traversing Inlets)

As far as I can tell, Zip Zap Power is one of the first YouTube channels to focus on the boats traversing Haulover Inlet. Since then, numerous other sites have followed Zip Zap’s lead. The reason is simple…entertaining content! I enjoy this channel because I like seeing all the different types of beautiful boats and also enjoy watching to see if the boat captains have success or encounter difficulties. The sea deserves respect and so does this channel.

BRONCOS GURU (Mix of Boating Fails)

Bronos Guru is kind of like the “Qualified Captain” of YouTube. For those who don’t know, “The Qualified Captain” is one of the most popular boating sites on Instagram but they don’t have a YouTube channel. Bronco’s channel is kind of like it. It’s very entertaining to watch and equally shocking at the same time. It’s amazing to me how many bad boaters exist on the water! You will definitely want to subscribe to this channel.

THE 10 BEST FLORIDA WATERFRONT RESTAURANTS FOR BOATERS

WAVY BOATS (Boats Traversing Inlets)

Wavy Boats is another of the original YouTube channels that focused on Haulover Inlet and I enjoy it for all the same reasons as Zip Zap Power. Wavy Boats appears to be the sister channel to Broncos Guru and is narrated by the same person.

BORN AGAIN BOATING (Maintenance, Repairs)

Born Again Boating is a fantastic YouTube channel. Its focus is on outboard motor repair and other projects relating to boating and other machinery. The creator of this channel knows his stuff! Born Again Boating has only been around since 2017 but it already has a ton of followers and it’s easy to see why. Definitely consider subscribing to this channel.

OUT ON THE REEF (Small Boat Excursions)

I like this channel because the creator uses a simple boat that everyone can relate to. Out of the Reef not only spends time fishing but he also spends time teaching his viewers about his boat projects, maintenance, overnight excursions and general boating. I really enjoy his content and I think you will too.

FLORIDA POWERBOAT CLUB (Speedboats, Babes and Poker Runs)

Florida Powerboat Club is pretty much as described in the title, “Speedboats, Babes and Poker Runs”. This YouTube channel is the product of Stu Jones. Stu is a leader in the powerboat industry and knows his stuff. This channel is filled with all kinds of eye candy and is worth following for sure.

FRESCO CHANNEL (South Florida Family Boating)

I started following Fresco Channel a couple of years ago and I really enjoy his content. What I like most is that the channel is family-oriented and Fresco takes his viewers on weekend trips throughout South Florida. Recently, his family purchased a house on the West Coast of Florida so I’m sure lots of new content is coming.

LAZY LOCATIONS (Boating Locations)

Of course, I’m partial to this one because it’s my own. Lazy Locations focuses on boating and beach locations all over Florida and The Bahamas. I initially started the channel to house 360 videos for my website (lazylocations.com) but it has become a channel that now details traditional videos and “how to” videos. This channel is a must for the new boater or someone who’s considering buying a boat or looking for that secluded beach. It’s also great for seasoned boaters who want to explore new locations.

THE TOP FLORIDA WATERFRONT HOTELS WITH BOAT SLIPS

CENTER CONSOLES ONLY (Boat Reviews)

Center Consoles Only is a great channel because they focus on high quality boating reviews of center console boats. If you’re in the market for a large center console (typically, over 30ft) this channel is for you.

JARED WATNEY (Life Aboard a Mega Yacht)

Jared Watney is a fantastic YouTube channel if you like Mega Yachts. Jared is a crewman onboard a 148” luxury vessel called “Bella”. His channel is filled with content that inspires, informs, and shows the pros and cons of the Mega Yacht life.

SAILING DOODLES (Sailing Adventures)

There are a ton of YouTube channels that focus on sailing but Sailing Doodles is probably my favorite because its’ founder is relatable and the content is a little more fun. Recently, he purchased a powerboat so the channel will have both power and sail, making it a little more unique than the others.

FLEMING YACHTS (Global Cruising)

I love this channel because not only are these boats beautiful but the cruising content is amazing and captivating. The “Venture” series is breathtaking. I highly recommend Fleming Yachts to add to your YouTube boating channel list.

ABOARD MERMAID MONSTER (Family Living Aboard a Nordhavn)

I just discovered this channel recently. Aboard Mermaid Monster is about a Southern California couple who sold everything and live on a 55’ Nordhavn full time with two young kids. This is a great channel for those who are considering doing the same thing. It’s also great because it’s one of the few cruising channels that is powerboat-focused instead of sailing-focused.

ALFRED MONTANER (Boat Shows, Reviews and Boat Ramp Chaos)

Alfred Montaner is another South Florida native who focuses on boating. However, his content is mainly about boat shows, boat reviews and boat ramp chaos. It’s a pretty entertaining channel with a home grown, unpolished feel. I enjoy it because it’s simple and Alfred has a happy attitude and strong passion for boats.

I utilize the service and benefits of Boat U.S.  They are a great organization that every boater should consider. You should too.  Click HERE to learn more.

10 of the best Youtube boat restorations

  • Kass Schmitt
  • August 1, 2020

Video blog reviewer Kass Schmitt shares 10 of her favourite Youtube boat restorations - as reviewed in the pages of Practical Boat Owner magazine

motorboat youtube

Boat restoration projects on Youtube never get old – for a start: the boats are often older than the people restoring them! But for anyone considering taking on a project, immersion in a few of the channels listed below may provide inspiration, techniques and help you avoid common pitfalls.

The video bloggers themselves will usually answer sensible questions, but do take the time to read through some of the comments below the line, as quite often even wiser heads prevail. Just be aware that your quick 15-minute video could easily turn into a three-hour read late into the night!

In no particular order of preference, here is a wide range of Youtube boat restorations that I have reviewed in my regular column in Practical Boat Owner magazine. Enjoy!

1. Tally Ho – Sampson Boat Co

In the lead up to lockdown, Leo Goolden and his small team at the Sampson Boat Company were making huge strides on the rebuild of the 1925 Fastnet Race winning yacht, Tally Ho , even if one of those strides was… in the wrong direction.

After fitting all the new deck beams and carlins they discover a good number are not actually white oak but a timber with the wicking characteristics of red oak.

Leo takes the sensible decision to redo them.

History of Tally Ho (RORC presentation / Ep.48(Pt1)

In Summer 2019, Leo gave a talk at the Royal Ocean Racing Club In London, which he kindly recorded and published on YouTube for the benefit of those of us who were not able to attend.

2. Sailing Yacht Kora

The number of channels inspired by Leo is also growing. There’s a buzz about 17-year-old Ashmole Faire-Ring’s channel Sailing Barge Growler , documenting his ambitious rebuild of a wooden sailing barge, but more to my taste is the channel Sailing Yacht Zora . Kinsale-based Rhys Walters is rebuilding a Koopmans (senior) designed steel blue water cruiser. The aim is to sail her to the Canaries, the Caribbean and beyond. She’s already sailing again and the focus is now on the interior fit out. With over 10,000 subscribers, I reckon this channel is going places.

3. Motor launch Gesida – Back Down On The Boat

Another Leo-inspired series that’s charmed me is Back Down on the Boat . Durham-based baker Paul Spooner is renovating Gesida , his ex-Admiralty wooden motor launch. We see him single-handedly reinstalling the reconditioned 750lb engine, a challenge for anyone, but even more impressive considering that Paul has ME and needs a wheelchair half the time. In addition, he muses on the benefits of boat work on his mental health. I’m sure many can relate when he says that it’s more than a hobby, it provides an escape from the trials of life and motivation to persevere when things get hard.

4. Westerly Centaur Lagertha – Sailing LAGERTHA

A refrain I frequently hear is that (insert name of) popular channel has become boring now that the boat’s in good shape or they’ve upgraded to a newer, shinier model, or they’ve learned how to sail, and are now spending all their time spear-fishing and sharing ceviche recipes. If you relate to that sentiment and need an antidote…

Yorkshireman Layton Barr of Sailing LAGERTHA has recently bought a Westerly Centaur, renamed her after his favourite viking shieldmaiden, and plans to fix her up and then go explore the Norwegian fjords… once he learns to sail. Expect to learn a thing or two about marine electronics from Layton, as that’s his profession. He’s pretty sure we’re not going to like the new livery he’s got planned.

5.  Lightship South Goodwin – Harry Dwyer

Professional video director Harry Dwyer has created a surprisingly engaging video on his channel Harry Dwyer about removing a huge quantity of expanding foam from inside a decommissioned lightship. The project takes nearly two years and the team displays an impressive amount of persistence and ingenuity.

As a reward for his filmmaking services, Harry is given the lightship’s tender, an Avon Sea Rider SR4 RIB. So he also made a series of videos about renovating the RIB.

Project Speedboat Part 7

6. Hurley Silhouette MkII Misumi – Alex Goes Sailing

The COVID-19 lockdown has led to the birth of a number of new channels, as frustrated sailors get busy in the editing suite instead of on the water. One that caught my eye is Alex Goes Sailing , in which a resourceful young lad from south-west London acquires a 1960 Hurley Silhouette MkII for £60 and slowly rebuilds it before embarking on a number of trailer-sailing coastal adventures in the Solent and Devon. Alex has since traded up to a £300 1970 Vivacity 650 bilge-keeler. One to watch.

7. Pearson 36 Uma – Sailing Uma

Meanwhile, at the Mayflower Marina in Plymouth, Sailing Uma ’s Dan and Kika managed to finish a number of ambitious projects on their Pearson 36 and relaunch before the UK lockdown began. Recent episodes see them replacing their electric motor and shaft drive with a snazzy second-hand Oceanvolt saildrive propulsion system and working with their friends at Multimarine to design, construct and fit a carbon fibre bowsprit in anticipation of adding a Code 0 to their sail wardrobe. If you don’t have friends willing to knock up a carbon fibre sprit for you don’t worry, I’m reliably informed that the lower portion of a windsurfer mast can also work.

(The Uma’s are always busy with new DIY – here’s their ‘Creative Tiny Wood Stove Installation’)

8. Carter 33 Chak Matay – Bums on a boat

Bums on a Boat is another channel chronicling the rescue of a classic that many would consider a lost cause. In this case it’s a modern classic, a Carter 33 built in Greece in 1974. The rescuers are an entertaining young American couple who, after sailing some time in the Caribbean, hauled out in Luperon, Dominican Republic to discover serious structural issues. I recommend starting from the haul-out at episode 62.

9. Gamelin Madeira 37 Chuffed – Vet Tails Sailing Chuffed

Meanwhile, in Mexico, sailing vet Dr Sheddy on Vet Tails’ Sailing Chuffed rises to the challenge of being the suddenly single owner of her 1990 Gamelin Madeira 37, while continuing to do her admirable voluntary work of providing lifesaving treatments to pets and wildlife.

10. Leopard 50 Happy Together – Sailing SV Happy Together

YouTube’s recommendation algorithm suggested I check out Sailing SV Happy Together , which is the closest thing I’ve seen to an episode of MTV Cribs for yachties. Randy and Lenny are an American couple in their 50s who last year traded up their Leopard 48 to a new Leopard 50, and, after taking delivery of the boat, proceeded to spend an eye-watering amount of money on extensive upgrades to, well, everything they could think of, in preparation for their eventual participation in the World ARC Rally.

Explore the Different Types of Boats Available

The vast array of boats available today can be overwhelming and thrilling at the same time. What kind of boat is right for you? That depends on what type of activities you plan to do on the water. Whether you’re looking for a creamy motorboat to zip around the lake in, or just a rowboat for a lazy afternoon of fishing, you’ll be able to find exactly what you need to make your time out on the water fulfilling.

  • Paddleboats are a great option for those looking to casually enjoy their time out on the water. Paddleboats are propelled manually by a paddle or by pedals, and usually feature cushioned benches for up to 4 passengers to enjoy the ride comfortably. They can commonly be found near the coastlines in the summertime, making it easy to hop on and enjoy a leisurely ride to explore the nearby landscape.
  • If you’re looking for greater power and speed, motorboats are an excellent choice. Motorboats come in many varieties, either equipped with a tilt and trim or outboard motor or an inboard motor. With a bit of practice, you can easily maneuver your way around the lake or ocean, enjoying a thrilling and exciting ride with the wind in your face. There are even some motorboats that are made for water sports, helping riders who are looking to optimize the time they spend on the water.

No matter what kind of activities you plan to engage in, there’s a perfect boat out there for you!

Essential Boating Safety Tips

Boating is fun and relaxing way to enjoy being on the water. However, safety should always be top of mind when getting ready to hit the open seas. Here is a look at some essential boating safety tips to help you stay safe while you are out on the water.

  • Whether you are going out on your own or with a group, always wear your life jacket while you are in the boat. This essential piece of safety gear can save your life if you fall overboard or get into a dangerous situation. Don't forget to make sure that everyone aboard is properly outfitted with the right size and type of life jacket.
  • It's also important that you check the weather conditions before leaving shore. Keep an eye on the horizon for storms and never go out if the conditions are too hazardous. Make sure to use quality navigational charts to help you plan your route and familiarize yourself with the area. Keep a fully stocked boat rescue kit on board your boat, including an emergency radio and a first aid kit.

These basic boating safety tips can help you enjoy a safe, enjoyable day out on the water. It's crucial that you take the time to understand how your boat works and be aware of your surroundings. Staying safe is the most important part of any successful boating adventure.

Choosing the Right Boat for Your Lifestyle

Having the right boat to suit your lifestyle is essential. You want to make sure that you are getting a boat that meets both your personal and family needs, as well as the environment you are planning on taking it into. Whether you’re an avid fisherman, a saltwater explorer, or a leisurely weekend cruiser, you need to take into consideration size, speed, cost, and overall comfort to make sure you’re getting the right boat.

  • When choosing a boat, the first factor to consider is size. It needs to fit your needs and be large enough to store all of your gear. Smaller boats are great if you don’t plan on going out all that often, but if you’re a frequent traveler and need space for passengers and supplies, a larger vessel will suit you better. Make sure to factor the different weight capacities, performance capabilities, and stowage capabilities when purchasing the right size of boat.
  • Next, think about the speed of your boat. You want something that’s fast enough to get you from point A to point B but also fuel efficient and low maintenance. Fuel types, power sources, and propulsion options all affect the speed of your boat, so do your research and find something that meets your needs and budget. When making your decision, also keep in mind the noise levels of the engine when it hits top speed. Noise pollution can be a problem, so make sure you find something that’s not too loud.

With all these factors in mind, you will be sure to pick the right boat for your lifestyle.

Jennifer Lawrence Jokes About Motorboating Her No Hard Feelings Co-Star, And He Deadpanned Right Back

Chemistry has to come from somewhere I guess!

No Hard Feelings required a lot from Jennifer Lawrence and her co-star, Andrew Barth Feldman. In order to make the summer comedy truly raunchy and hilarious, the scene partners had to get well-acquainted with each other very quickly. Creating a safe environment was essential and, once their off-screen chemistry started to shine, they felt comfortable enough to take risks together. The Red Sparrow star even joked about motorboating Feldman while shooting the film, to which the 21-year-old actor gave a perfectly dead-panned response.

The comedic duo sat down with Variety to chat about their new R-rated comedy and explained how they became familiar enough to perform some of their more vulnerable scenes together. The notion of getting nude in front of one's co-worker is odd, but the No Hard Feelings cast and crew created a great environment for both actors to feel at ease. Andrew Barth Feldman, for his part, had nothing but positive sentiments to share in regard to working with Jennifer Lawrence :

Every situation that these characters end up in, you’re laughing your butt off. We became so close instantly that nothing ever felt weird or unsafe. It was entirely professional.

JLaw responded with a characteristically hilarious response, giving a little bit of an insight into some of the outlandish shenanigans happening behind-the-scenes. She quipped:

Even when I put my T-shirt over your head and motor-boated you? You felt safe?

I’d love to find out what the crazy context was for that wild-sounding moment. Regardless, the A Tourist's Guide to Love alum was seemingly fine with his co-star's antics. He responded in a jokingly serious manner, saying:

I felt it was an exclusively sterile and professional environment.

This young man has some solid comedic chops, because that's a well-timed retort that could rival a statement made by his co-lead. But in all serious, I'm sure a "sterile and professional" workplace vibe was surely needed.

All in all, the comments shared by the two stars convey their joy over making the movie. They both had to perform nude scenes but were perfectly content with it, as they brought a casual perspective to the potentially uncomfortable scenes. Jennifer Lawrence also talked about eating grilled cheese in between takes , which gives you an idea of the somewhat laid back vibe on set. Andrew Barth Feldman also revealed he and the Hunger Games alum would talk about apartment decorating while filming major scenes. I'm sure having such a chill approach probably eliminated any kind of embarrassment, allowing them to relax and have fun.

Their chemistry and willingness to take risks in the professional environment clearly paid off. Jennifer Lawrence received a lot of praise from critics for her brave performance. It's enough to make one think about other dramatic actresses who should work on a comedy film . Andrew Barth Feldman is also wonderful, as he has hysterical banter with the Oscar winner throughout the film. While motorboating may not be a typical occurrence on a set, it seems to have created a fun memory for Lawrence and Feldman that they can now joke about.
