To reach the quay, our modular equipment passerelles have a maximum reach of up to 10 metres . When a longer passerelle is required, Cramm can offer you a customised passerelle in any desired length.

Based on the available space, Cramm offers three different types of passerelles: non-telescopic, single telescopic and double telescopic, with non-telescopic requiring the most build-in space and the double telescopic the least.

Extendable Lorry

When space is extremely limited on the yacht, the extendable lorry offers the ideal space-saving solution. The double telescopic lorry system can store two lorries on top of each other, reducing the required length enormously compared to a standard lorry; the height of the box is doubled to just only 650 mm. This space saving enables other equipment and systems to take maximum advantage of the available space in the yacht.

Our series of passerelles are of lightweight construction, manufactured from aluminium and the very latest materials. This results in a high torque stiffness, minimal bending and a weight reduction of 25% to 35% compared to the previous series.

Due to the sturdy design, the deflection of the passerelle free off the quay with a maximum load of 250 kg is limited to a minimum and one of the best you can get in the market. At Cramm we keep improving our products to stay up to date with the latest trends, quality standards and technologies. Contact one of our employees to learn more about our products

Super Yacht Quality

To increase the service life of our products and give the yacht equipment a quality finish, all products are faired and painted using the highest yacht-quality paint available. Furthermore, to guarantee a high-quality result, at Cramm we use the best brands for all teak and hydraulic components on our boarding equipment. All Cramm passerelles meet uncompromised quality and design standards (ISO, LY3).

Our experienced team that delivers outstanding craftmanship and the use of the very best materials, enables Cramm to deliver extended warranties on equipment to cover the period from delivery at the shipyard to the transfer of the vessel to the owner and beyond.

Rotating or Fixed

Cramm offers two standard systems for using the passerelle in every docking position. Our fixed passerelle system is ideal for docking with the stern to quay, with no rotation needed within the passerelle to board the yacht.

Using the rotating slewing frame, the passerelle can be rotated towards the quay at an angle of 90° on both sides. Furthermore, when docking and an obstacle is in the way, the slewing frame can easily reposition the passerelle to the sides without the need to re-dock the yacht.

Specifications

To reach the quay, our modular equipment passerelles have a maximum reach of up to 10 metres , the maximum slewing point lenght is up to 2 metres.  Cramm offers 3 standaard sizes for the walkway width to minize the engeneering cost: 800 MM – 1000 MM and 1200 MM . Other dimensions are always on request.

Motor Yacht Idynasty

Working with Cramm over the last 3 years has been a pleasure. Cramm equipment is built to a very high standard, and unlike some bespoke equipment found on yachts, has proven to be very reliable. The installation of Cramm equipment has been carried out by experienced technicians with maintenance in mind for access to serviceable components.

Cramms service engineers are extremely knowledgeable of their systems, routine service visits incorporate thorougher inspections of equipment, often detecting potential problems before they occur. Cramms service engineers are always very careful with keeping clean and not making a mess. Working areas are always very well protected before work commences, and left as found. I would definitely recommend Cramm for hydraulic equipment as one of the leading company’s in the industry.

Martin Thomas

Motor yacht hermitage.

I have been working with Cramm for many years now, and I can say it has been a pleasure to work with them. The support and cooperation has always been great, and the relationships warm and pleasant. I can recommend this company to anyone that requires quality hydraulic appliances, and hope to continue my work relationship with them for many years to come.

Hans De Smit

Royal huisman bv.

For me it is a big advantage that our companies are relatively close to each other. This makes the verbal communication much more efficient. Short lines often work better. So also the follow up of appointments and agreements work well is my experience. What I also notice about Cramm is that in principle everything is negotiable in a good way, as well the somehow bigger challenges. Cramm is a beautiful Dutch company to work together with.

Pieter Smit

Motor yacht castellina.

I would like to take the time to thank you for the recent visit from a Cramm engineer. It was great to get him back onboard after 16 years to see how the system is now functioning. We found him to be extremely helpful and carried out the assessment with great care and was very thorough.

With the system still functioning well after 16 years of hard service we are certainly going to stick with you, for our up and coming major refit next year, you certainly have our trust! With your revolutionary designs, great service, great build quality and dedicated professional engineers, I would be happy to recommend your services to anyone looking for a first class service.

Motor Yacht Blade

Over the past years Cramm has done several projects on board M/Y BLADE. No matter how big or small, each project was completed to a high standard. Cramm’s service has always been transparent, friendly, efficient and neat. Their knowledgeable engineers are always willing to go the extra mile and their aftercare never disappoints. All in all we’re extremely happy with the service Cramm has provided us with over the years and we’ll continue to use them.

Gangways for yachts, superyachts and work boats

The Passerelle ,the first, important and essential yacht equipment, has always received special attention from the Besenzoni Spa and is today one of the “must have” of the company. The range is transversal and goes from the essential Telescopic hydraulic gangway with external fixing to the more articulated one with swivel group and crane function up to the high range of Retractable Hydraulic three stages passerelles without forgetting the recent introduction of Electric gangways . Many models have been designed to perform multiple functions: as a walkway, a crane for launching / hauling a tender and as a ladder for accessing the quay thanks to the self-leveling steps. Know-how, patents and ongoing research are the basis to guarantee safety in every aspect, always paying close attention on the aesthetic side of the product. LED courtesy lights, no-slip inserts and the frontal lights are stylish details ,not only aesthetic but also functional.

The current state of superyacht passerelle design

With thanks to C-Systems , Feebe , and Hydromar

Passerelle

In much of the marine world, passerelles aren’t much more than a thick slab of wood to enable convenient boarding at dock. Though, as usual when it comes to the superyacht industry, these products take on a whole new definition. Boarding the yacht becomes a secondary purpose of superyacht passerelles, in place of presenting the first piece of luxury a guest will experience. After all, boarding an opulent superyacht filled to the brim with extravagance via a dirty plank of wood just wouldn’t feel right.

With superyachts and their owners’ wishes constantly evolving, we spoke with some experts in the field of passerelles and gangways to establish where the design and functionality of these products are headed.

I like big afts and I cannot lie

Yacht hydraulic specialists Hydromar told us about on the rise of longer afts on today’s superyachts, creating an industry-wide need for longer passerelles. This can introduce problems around stowing and on-board space. However, Hydromar has developed a range of folding passerelles to navigate this hurdle and is able to create passerelles for this purpose up to 15m in length.

Aft

Speaking about the most important factors to owners in passerelle design, Hydromar told us that it comes down to “trustworthiness, easy operation, rotating, topping up and down, free float to be resting in the quay with light sea state, length, and load capacity.”

Dutch firm Feebe summarised the purpose of a passerelle well: "To give [the owner and guests] a warm welcome on board," noting that width and stability are the two key factors of a well-engineered passerelle.

Pimp my passerelle

passerelle on yacht

C-Systems told us about the rise of off-the-shelf lighting solutions in recent years, and how this has led to an increase in owners choosing to have sleek lighting integrated into their yacht’s passerelles, telling us, “Lighting has become a big item also. LED illumination has become the norm with the proliferation and low cost of off-the-shelf systems that are rugged enough for yacht applications.”

Likewise, Feebe are hot in development of "very cool LED strips" that are integrated and hidden when off, and seemlessly become beautiful rope lighting at night.

In many ways the rise of illuminated passerelles may also stem from a deep-rooted instinct within all of us: things that light up are way cooler than things that don’t.

"Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail." - Leonardo Da Vinci

We’ve all heard the saying before, but it really holds true when it comes to the height of quality. If your first impression of a yacht is a poorly designed set of fold-down steps with low stability, then it taints the entire experience of the yacht. C-Systems fronted a major redesign project for an owner’s side accommodation stairs, where the small details were the main focus. This approach was instrumental in transforming the finish from functional to exceptional.

Before its redesign, C-Systems was faced with a set of stairs with several issues the owner wished to resolve:

  • Side-to-side play on the steps, which had caused instability in use and a cheap feel.
  • Flimsy steps made of teak grating without reinforcement.
  • Gas shocks used to assist in levelling underrated. Not suitable for heavy loads.
  • Poor aesthetics that didn’t match class of yacht.
  • No remote control—could only operate from pilothouse, requiring additional crew member.

To bring the stairs up to scratch, C-Systems focused on enhancing the minor details and appearance of the product, culminating in a much classier and premium product with that real feeling of quality engineering.

The stairs were revamped with a polished stainless-steel articulated frame, custom made in-house. The steps were remade out of water jet-cut and folded stainless-steel plates complete with lightening cuts, where allowable, to keep weight low, and these were then topped with custom teak pads for a beautiful finish.

Along with this, the electrical system was completely overhauled to allow for operation via remote control, and LED lighting was added to each step providing additional safety and aesthetic benefits. The project was a great success, and all down to the finer, less obvious details coming together to create a much larger difference.

Passerelle, meet crane.

Having a crane on board to lift tenders and other heavy objects on deck is often an undesirable necessity on an opulent yacht as they tend to have a rather industrial appearance.

Feebe produced an innovative solution for Lynx Yachts' 29m 'Adventure 29' combining both a sturdy passerelle and deck crane into one product, made to integrate beautifully into the yacht's design whilst serving two purposes and negating the requirement for additional lifting equipment.

The end result is a beautiful piece of engineering combining two essential products on a superyacht.

diy passarelle, boarding gangway

Recently posted in a different section but hope to get some response here! I plan to make a passarelle and favour using an aluminium 4 piece folding ladder as the base as I know people have done so here, I would like to know how successfull these have been as I plan to use mine daily and concerned about weight load, also interested in any other passarelle designs but a folding type would be perfect, so long as it doesnt fold whilst im on it!

I used a two piece extending ladder (normal type). It had to have wood screwed to the rungs on one side with non-slip battens attached, as sometimes there is considerable slope. The landward end was fitted with wheels and also held just clear of the jetty with a bungy loop which allowed my weight to drop it. The ladder was also useful when on the hard and to reach radar/windmill/antennae etc. on a pole at the stern. The main problem was attaching to the boat: we needed both bows and stern to depending on circumstances, and did not have a proper articulating fitting at either end. A piece of strong tubing from the main mooring post on the foredeck pointing overboard a right angles to the lubber line, fitted nicely into the hollow rung and was suitably lashed. at the stern there was enough deck to use once it was padded. The ladder stowed neatly against the stanchions at sea. Paint/dremel your ships signature on it of course!

Windlass100 said: I made one a couple of seasons ago - very light and easily handled. Used a Jewson's 4.2m ladder as it had square rungs which allowed good seating for the 6mm ply decking which was riveted to each rung. The decking is strong enough but might replace in future with 8mm. Found a couple of good wheels in Homebase for the outer end. Used some plastic piping for inner end protection of the cockpit. The ladder/passerelle sits on the side deck lashed to the guardrail when on passage. Put a couple of rubber feet (Homebase door stops!) on the side to lift off the deck. Does the job! And copied by many in the marina. When in use I use the topping lift plus block at stern for "local" height adustment. Use a bungee to hold just off the pontoon. Click to expand...

I made one out of plywood which works really well. The key feature was that I curved the sides to match the bulwarks of the boat ie. when in position it has a slightly arched appearance which also might be good engineering. Anyway, this curvature allows it to stow very neatly along the guard rail. The two side pieces are linked by the steps so that the passeralle doubles as a ladder when required. Final points , it is really light and has lasted for five years so far. Further details available if interested. Cheers.

Excellent,Thanks

If you are not too concerned with having a really smart finish as in the pics above, then it might be worth using a scaffolding plank as the walking surface when the passarelle is laid out. Advantages. less weight than the combined unit plank can be used in conjunction with fenders in deep locks plank can be used when painting / varnishing frees ladder for other laddery work A couple of holes in each end, and a length of small line to secure the plank to the ladder.

vyv_cox

boarding plank bought a builders plank some years ago in crete put a line through one end this tied to the bot and let the other end slide around the quays where we tied up not fancy but it worked the end on the quay is worn down a bit but still ok.

Here is a marina dog photo with part of the plywood gagngplank showing the general idea http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn14/hectou/IMGP1552.jpg

I've been using one of these folding ladders in the yard - kept chained to the cradle. Just a warning that the springs in the hinges rust rather readily and need to be kept greased. WD40 will get them moving nicely, but I think a bicycle chain lubricant spraycan would be better long term maintenance. Rob.

Thanks everyone for the usefull info, I like the idea of it being foldable as I could stow it somewhere secure when not on board & have the option of making it longer or shorter depending on where/how moored. I would however have to make sure each section of plywood was free of gaps where it hinges if possible as my dog will be the main user. I currently have one made from 3x3 tanalised timber with floorboards running accross it. It has served its purpose but when saturated with water becomes v heavy. Its also too short being about 6.5' & at quite an angle when in flood as the deck is maybe 4' higher than the shore!

i3 Foldable Passerelle

Description.

The i3 carbon foldable passerelle is a gangway to safely board the vessel. Not only does the passerelle serve the purpose but it also looks the part. The inspiration for the geometry was taken from the iconic E-type Jaguar front end making it very aesthetically pleasing and will enhance any vessel it is mounted on. We’ve all seen the lovely looking superyacht that has a plank of wood for boarding, one its not safe and two it really lowers the tone of the yacht.  The i3 carbon passerelle is super strong / lightweight / durable because of the carbon sandwich construction. It folds in half so that it takes up less space for stowing away. It comes with various choices for the deck, can be clear coat carbon fibre finish or painted any colour required. Installation is very simple and comes with one standard stainless steel female deck socket. The outboard end can be connected to a mast halyard to take the majority of the weight and to stabilise while in use. It also has a delrin protective coaster to stop any damage from the dock / key.  The carbon stanchions and hand rail help make you feel safe and comfortable while boarding on and off the vessel.

These are pieces of equipment that are thought of as necessary but yet we do not pay them that much attention. Ever thought of the craftmanship that goes in to making a custom passerelle or boarding ladder for a superyacht. It is insane and not to mention expensive. Here is a look at a quick overview of a passerelle being made for a superyacht.

There's a lot of experience in crane building out there. Passerelles are easy compared to their less fancy cousins like fire trucks. Imagine a passerelle doing this: https://e-one-aerials.com/cr-137-ae...-ONE CR 137,horizontally to access the target . My uncle use to drive the back of a hook and ladder in NYC. How far we've come. I've crossed to too many boats on a 2 x 12, and even boat to boat on an extension ladder. Sometimes fancy is really nice.
Check out this one that is on the Wider "Cecilia".
Sure beats the 8" boards I've used to board many boats. Nice setup as long as there's a second set of steps to the swim platform.

Gangplanks distributed by Yacht-Tek. These specialist Passerelles are designed for one person to handle and deploy with ease. The folding models are really easy to stow aboard and for the solid version there is a very practical bag for the gangway to be safely stored outside.

These extraordinarily light and manageable Passerelles are extremely quick to use, making this boarding system a valid alternative to heavy and bulky hydraulic Passerelles.

Passerelles have a wide non-slip walking surface. They are designed to a maximum load capacity of 350 kg making for a safe, comfortable crossing from ship to shore dependant on the passerelle purchased.

Key Features:

  • Unidirectional carbon fibre integral hinges
  • UV resistant epoxy resin with transparent anti UV coating
  • Hard anodised CNC machined light alloy hardware
  • High gloss carbon fibre finish as standard
  • Teak walk way
  • Aluminium walkway
  • Compact and light weight

The carbon fibre Gangplanks are entirely made in Italy.

I’ve seen several of Simon’s installations, first class job, the product will probably last longer than your boat, no bloody sanding and it won’t stain when you bring that 75kg tuna on deck!
These guys did the decking on my boat. 9m2, great job!

Stripes On Yachts: What Do They Mean?

Whether you are new to the yachting industry or an experienced professional, we’ve all asked ourselves the same question at least once in our career, “what do those stripes mean?” This article breaks down the meanings behind these cryptic stripes.

passerelle on yacht

What do Yacht Stripes Mean on Epaulettes?

The epaulettes worn on the shoulders of superyacht crew are a legacy of 17th-century military dress in France —when they were used both as a decorative sign of status and a handy way of stopping your sword belt from slipping off your shoulder.

Epaulettes (also epaulets) were adopted by most world navies by the 18th century as a formal insignia of rank and then made their way into the merchant and leisure cruising industries.

The word ‘epaulettes’ comes from the French ‘épaule’, meaning shoulder, and are black with stripes in either gold or silver braid, with a symbol to designate department.

Why and When do Yacht Crew Wear Them?

Yacht crew wear epaulettes in their formal dress as a way of signifying their rank and department, as well as adding a certain status to an occasion.

Epaulettes are usually worn while welcoming guests onto the yacht at arrival and on evening service and passerelle watch, but rarely during daytime activities. These small bits of material add formality and are used as a sign of respect to the guests. You will also often wear epaulettes during boat shows or, less commonly, when welcoming officials or marine pilots on board.

Guests can use the epaulettes to know the rank and department of the crew member they are talking to (even if few guests probably know what they all mean!) Knowing the epaulette system is also helpful for crew to identify another’s rank and department at a glance. In contrast, the epaulettes act as a valuable code for the wider industry — for instance, for port officials to recognise a captain upon arrival.

Not all superyachts use epaulettes in their uniform, as they are in no way a legal requirement (as they are in the Navy). But most do — even if just for that first welcome of the boss from the airport.

The Epaulette ‘Ranking’ System The stripes run from 4 to 1 in descending order of rank. Unlike in the cruise ship industry, there are no half-stripes.

You might have noticed that the different colours of the stripes are significant: The gold braid is reserved for deck and engineering roles, while the silver is for interior roles.

Symbols

  • The symbols of anchors and propellers for deck and engineering roles are (hopefully!) self-explanatory.
  • The stew’s crescent moon is a throwback to the 1800s when Napoleon introduced crescent-shaped bread to feed his army.
  • The quills on a purser’s epaulettes refer to their administrative role.

How to Wear Epaulettes Like You Know What You’re Doing

Now that you know what an epaulette is and what each variation means, it’s your job to a) not lose them and b) wear them the right way up. You might wonder how you could lose an epaulette in a closed environment like a yacht, but trust us, those tiny bits of material sprout legs when you’re not looking.

We strongly suggest that you make a first-day-and-forever habit of always taking your epaulettes off and putting them on the same shelf in the bathroom. And once you’ve found them, always take a quick look to see that you haven’t put them on upside down.

Slipping on your epaulettes for the first time is a rite of passage for any new crew member. Relish the moment. Take a look in the mirror. Look sharp, don’t you?

'Negligence' by Caribbean police blamed in murders of Americans on yacht: prime minister

T hree Caribbean prison escapees, who allegedly killed an American couple, were placed in the wrong cells that were less secure, despite warnings they were dangerous and flight risks, the Grenada prime minister said this week.

Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 23, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, were supposed to be placed in individual jail cells that had a "secure locking mechanism," Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said.

Instead, they were "in a corridor" with burglar bars that suspects bent and broke free from South St. George Police Station on Feb. 18, according to Mitchell, who added that four officers were arrested.

"It is clear that had the men been placed in the individual locking cells which had proper functioning locking mechanisms, they would not have escaped or had the opportunity to escape," the prime minister said. "The investigation concluded … human error, primarily in the form of negligence, played a pivotal role in the escape."

SUSPECTS IN AMERICANS' CARIBBEAN YACHT HIJACKING CHARGED WITH MURDER, RAPE OF MISSING COUPLE

The fleeing suspects hijacked Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel's yacht during a violent altercation that allegedly included Brandel's rape.

The retired couple from Virginia were allegedly thrown overboard somewhere between Grenada, where the suspects escaped, and the island of St. Vincent, where they were ultimately recaptured.

SUSPECT IN AMERICANS' CARIBBEAN YACHT HIJACKING SHOT DURING ARREST, 2 OTHER FOUNDS HIDING: REPORTS

"So far," four officers were arrested and charged with several crimes under the country's Police Act, including making a false statement, permitting the escape of prisoners and breaches of the Standing Orders, the prime minister said.

"It is also clear that the leadership at the station is a matter that requires attention as well, and the commission of police has commissioned an investigation into the role of leadership at the time (of the escape)," Mitchell said during a March 13 press conference.

Despite the negligence and arrests, Mitchell expressed his support for law enforcement and said "disrespecting the police will not be tolerated."

WATCH BLOODIED SUSPECT'S ARREST

Authorities still have not found Hendry or Brandel's bodies in the 70-plus miles of water between the two islands.

Last week, the suspects were returned to Grenada, where they were all charged with two counts of capital murder , escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping. Stanislaus was also charged with rape.

BLOODIED SUSPECT IN MISSING AMERICANS' CARIBBEAN YACHT HIJACKING TOSSED INTO TRUCK DURING ARREST, VIDEO SHOWS

Robertson was shot by police on St. Vincent during his arrest.

Police said he reached for an officer's gun, according to Searchlight and other local outlets, but he denied this narrative during his court appearance.

"I never wrestle with no officer," he reportedly told the judge. "The officer throw me on the ground and just shoot me on me foot, you understand? I never wrestle with no police, you understand?"

The beloved couple's yacht – "Simplicity" – was docked off Grand Anse Beach in Grenada, a popular tourist hot spot that the couple sailed to, when the suspects allegedly took the vessel by force as part of their getaway.

Their sons, Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry, talked about their parents' impact on them and others in previous interviews.

BLOOD FOUND ON KIDNAPPED AMERICANS' YACHT DURING CARIBBEAN PRISON ESCAPE: ‘PRESUMED DEAD’

"Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of," they said in a heartfelt message.

They sailed off the eastern coast of the United States and "made friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family."

"That's who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts," they said. "We live in a world that at times can be cruel, but it’s also a world of profound beauty, wonder, adventure, love, compassion, caring and faith.

"Our parents encompassed all those values and so much more."
