Clever boat storage ideas: Making the most of limited space

  • Clever boat storage ideas: Making the most of limited space

Embarking on a boating adventure is exhilarating, but the challenge of maximizing storage space can dampen the excitement. The confined quarters of a boat demand ingenious storage solutions to keep essentials organized and accessible. From collapsible silicone tools to inventive hanging systems, this article unveils a trove of boat storage ideas that will transform your vessel into a well-organized haven, whether you're sailing a yacht or cruising on a compact fishing boat.

Collapsible silicone magic

Silicone tools and gadgets are the ultimate space-saving heroes. From collapsible buckets to versatile colanders, these items can be easily compacted when not in use. Switch to silicone cups, bowls, and bakeware to save room in your galley. Plus, a collapsible bucket can fit into the tightest of spots on fishing or runabout boats, ensuring you're prepared without taking up valuable space.

Compact cooking

For the culinary enthusiasts, opt for a bead storage organizer with sealable plastic jars to store spices without taking up excessive space. For onboard happy hour, consider creating a plywood wine cellar beneath the cockpit or cabin sole. To transport items, a portable shower caddy works wonders.

Knife storage solutions

Storing knives on a boat poses a challenge, but creative solutions abound. Transform a knife set block by reducing it to a vertical column and attaching it to a cabinet bulkhead or unused vertical space. Add a fabric cover with a snap and Velcro closure to keep the handles secure. Alternatively, mount a magnetic strip inside cabinets or under them to keep knives and metal tools within easy reach.

Suction cups & Velcro versatility

Modern suction cups have evolved to become versatile storage solutions. Use them to hang wet towels, secure cup and rod holders, or even mount iPad holders using marine-grade suction cups. When smooth surfaces are scarce, turn to Velcro. Available in various sizes and strengths, Velcro tabs can organize tools, life jackets, and other essentials in cabins or on deck.

Sandpaper & Dishes organized

For DIY enthusiasts, plastic accordion files from office supply stores offer an efficient sandpaper organizer. Label each pocket with different grit counts to streamline your next project. Similarly, repurpose magazine organizers for dishes and other items. Attach them to shelves to hold plates, shallow bowls, tools, books, or kitchen supplies.

Pocket perfection

Utilize every nook and cranny by incorporating pockets into your boat's design. Whether pre-made or custom, mesh pockets can be attached to handrails, seat backs, and other existing structures. These pockets are ideal for stashing sunglasses, cell phones, keys, and even pet toys, ensuring easy access to everyday essentials.

Elevated shoe storage

Free up valuable locker space by hanging shoes using fabric shelves. These fold-up soft shelves can accommodate multiple pairs of shoes, hats, gloves, T-shirts, and more. Lightweight and breathable, they provide a smart solution for keeping footwear organized and accessible.

Bungee cord storage

Leverage the headliner or bulkhead to create a web of crisscrossed bungee cords. This innovative storage solution can accommodate large flat items like charts or cutting boards, keeping them out of the way yet easily accessible.

Embrace minimalism

Remember, space is a precious commodity on any boat. Prioritize items based on necessity and frequency of use. Keep the essentials for day-to-day activities and emergency situations, ensuring your vessel remains organized and functional.

Making every inch count

Mastering the art of boat storage is a voyage of creativity and efficiency. With these clever storage ideas, you can transform cramped spaces into organized havens. By embracing versatile tools, hanging systems, and smart solutions, you'll unlock the potential of every inch on your boat. Whether you're preparing to set sail or enjoy a leisurely cruise, these storage strategies will ensure that your boating experience is seamless and clutter-free. Remember, thoughtful organization enhances the joy of exploration.

Yacht storage options explained & common questions.

  • June 7, 2021

In an ideal world, every yacht owner would keep his prized vessel behind his house. When it comes to yacht storage, every owner prefers this scenario. But for a number of reasons (waterfront real estate is expensive, some yacht are too big, the water might not be deep enough, the dock might not be sufficient for the yacht, etc.), many yacht owners have to seek alternative storage options. Thankfully, yacht storage options are plentiful amidst most popular boating destinations.

YACHT STORAGE TYPES

While perhaps not a perfect categorization, the following categories can help us in how we group various yacht storage options: at-home or self storage, outdoor storage at a boatyard, slips at a marina and high and dry storage.

Self Storage  – A simple form of boat storage is storing the boat yourself either at your home or at a self storage facility. For small boats, boat owners often store the boat in a garage, a general purpose storage facility or an outdoor storage place for boats (this can include covered and uncovered storage). Waterfront homes offer the ability to store the yacht either in the water adjacent to the home, or on a lift to get the boat out of the water.

Lift technology has progressed in recent years, and yacht owners have many options should they choose to install a lift on their property. While traditional boat lift options still exist, boat owners can also consider newer platform lifts and lower profile lifts that tend to maintain a cleaner aesthetic against beautiful water views. A general rule of thumb is that lifts will typically cost $1 per pound it needs to lift. As such, a 20,000 pound capacity lift would generally run in the $20,000 range. Also, it’s good practice to overdo the weight capacity slightly. Perhaps if you have a 20,000 boat, consider a lift that is certified up to 25,000 pounds. Lifts are typically appropriate for yachts up to 60 feet.

Boatyard Storage  – This boat storage option is essentially exactly what it sounds like. Boats stored in an outdoor setting in a boatyard. Boatyards are typically located near water or other marinas, but offer a less expensive option compared to a marina or high and dry storage. Some boatyard options are attached to marinas as well.

Marina Slips  – Many marinas offer multiple boat storage options. Wet slips at marinas are typically the least expensive option as the boat simply sits in the water at the marina. Lift slips are also typically available and give the boat owner the option to have the boat out of the water. With the boat out of the water, boat owners will not have to clean the bottom of the boat as much. However, the boat is still susceptible to other environmental effects such as sun exposure and rain or hail. Note that some marinas offer covered lift slips. The advantage of wet slips and lift slips over high and dry storage is that you aren’t beholden to staff to give you access to the boat. You can access the slip on your own, hop in your boat and be out on the water in minutes. Like high and dry storage, having your boat stored at the marina means not having to trailer your boat.

For larger yachts, wet slips are the main option available. The size yacht that a particular marina can handle will vary based on dock layout and water depth.

yacht storage high and dry

High and Dry Storage  – Many marinas also offer high and dry storage. High and dry storage means that your boat is stored indoors up on a rack with other boats. The facility will utilize forklifts to lift and lower boats in the storage area.

Storing your boat in an indoor environment is the best possible setting for your boat. High and dry storage, however, does come with a few drawbacks. First, high and dry storage facilities do not offer power for stored boats (whereas many lifts will have an option to plugin and keep your batteries charged). Depending on your boat and complexity of onboard systems, there are many systems that can drain the battery system during storage. Secondly, the constant use of forklifts can generate significant dust and soot inside the facility that can cover the stored boats. Typically this can be minor and easily hosed off, but if the boat sits for too long, it can get quite dirty. Keeping the boat covered during long-term storage can be a good idea to manage this issue.

Rack storage availability will be based on the beam of the boat, the length of the boat, the weight of the boat and the height of the boat (many owners forget to consider the height!).

Many high and dry storage facilities will let you call ahead to have your boat brought out of storage, prepared for use and in the water waiting for your arrival. Many will even stock your boat with ice. It’s good practice to get to know the attendants and be generous with tips. Upon returning from use, you can typically leave the boat in the water and hand over the keys. The attendants will wash the boat, flush the engines and place the boat back in storage.

Of course, high and dry storage isn’t an option if your yacht exceeds a certain size and weight.  Marker 1 Marina  in Dunedin, Florida, for example, can store up to 55 foot boats utilizing its 40,000 lb fork lift. Yachts larger than this will need to utilize wet slips.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A STORAGE FACILITY

The facility and staff that you entrust your yacht to is an important consideration. As such, here are a few tips on what to look for in a boat storage facility:

  • Have a critical eye when driving up to the marina or storage facility. Is the area clean and landscaped? How professional are the staff and management?
  • What are the security procedures of the facility? Is the property gated? Are security cameras present? Ask about any potential recent security issues.
  • What are the steps and procedures in the event of a serious storm or hurricane? Should the facility enter the path of a NOAA hurricane forecast, what are the procedures in place?
  • If utilizing high and dry storage, is it possible to have the boat cleaned from time to time?
  • What amenities are available for slips (electrical, cable TV, wifi access, etc.)?
  • Are the personnel insured and bonded?

OTHER YACHT STORAGE CONSIDERATIONS & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Preparing the vessel for storage is an important process. By taking the appropriate measures before storage, you can more easily ensure your boat or yacht is as close to seaworthy as possible upon your return.

Make sure the yacht is washed thoroughly before storing the yacht. Remove any perishables from the boat. Drain the bilge, and discuss with the marina personnel if there are any restrictions pertaining to how much fuel is left in the tanks (especially for long-term storage).

For boaters up north, winterizing is a topic that commands more attention than we will give it in this article, but it’s worth mentioning at a high level. When the boating season winds down up north, there are crucial considerations such as whether to remove your boat from the water, winterizing the vessel and its various systems and finally where to store the boat. For some, this means indoor, climate-controlled storage (also the more expensive option). For others, it means going through a full process to protect the boat being stored outside. Shrink wrapping, winterizing the engine, taking care of the fuel and battery systems and more are all considerations that must be made. If you’re a new boat owner, it’s best to lean on a professional to ensure your boat is properly cared for as you approach the winter season.

Additionally, many boat owners use their boat as a vacation destination unto itself (a floating condominium, if you will). For instance, in Florida, many residents that live inland, in say Central Florida, keep a boat or a yacht at a marina on the coast year round, and then travel to the coast and stay on their boat for a few days. In other situations, some folks will enter retirement and spend the first few years of this new phase of life living on a yacht. For these yacht owners, the marina slip is often a popular boat storage choice. The boat is accessible and ready for use at any time. Many marinas also offer social opportunities and amenities such as bars, restaurants, exercise facilities and more that are within walking distance of your boat. If this describes your boating lifestyle, be sure to discuss how you plan to use and stay on the boat before signing a boat storage contract with a particular marina. Depending on how full-time or part-time your living on your boat or yacht, many marinas will charge a “liveaboard fee” that is on top of the usual slip rates.

With the liveaboard option becoming increasingly popular in recent years, some marinas will even market themselves as liveaboard marinas. For instance,  Regatta Pointe  in Palmetto, FL, presents itself as “Florida’s Premier Live Aboard & Large Boat Marina.” To accommodate such boaters, the marina offers multiple clubhouses, showers, an exercise facility, wireless internet, a pool, laundry services, restaurants and other businesses. Other marinas like  St. Petersburg’s Municipal Marina  don’t necessarily advertise themselves as a liveaboard marina, but have naturally developed a very active liveaboard community (complete with a multi-year waiting list!). This isn’t completely unusual, so depending on your area or region, be sure to research all the options.

The following are frequently asked questions regarding boat and yacht storage:

Can you bring an outside crew to clean or work on the boat?

The answer is typically no on this due to the storage facility’s own liability protection, but be sure to ask this question before signing a contract. Light cleaning and simple maintenance work on your own is usually fine.

If you have a boat in high and dry storage, how long does it take to launch?

Most facilities will communicate a standard wait time, but during busy seasons, this can vary widely. It’s best to give the facility sufficient lead time before arrival, or better yet, schedule it a day or two ahead.

What is required if I decide the facility is the right option for boat storage?

In most situations, proof of insurance is required. Contract terms such as security deposit, first month’s payment, last month’s payment can vary depending on the facility.

What are the measurements a marina will use to determine length, height?

Typically the length includes engines, swim platforms and bow pulpits. Beam and height overall are calculated from the keel to the highest point.

What types of contracts are available from a marina or a storage facility?

Marinas and storage facilities will often offer a range of contract options. While month-to-month and seasonal options are usually available, discounts can often be had for longer commitments such as annual.

Boat Storage: What Are My Options?

Boat storage both in season and during the winter months is an important consideration for boaters, but the issue raises a lot of questions: how much are boat storage costs? How will I find boat storage near me? Do I need additional boat storage compartments for all my gear, or can it remain on the boat?

Never fear, dear boater—we’re here to answer all these questions and more, when it comes to boat storage and boat storage facilities. Let’s start by differentiating between the three main options for boat storage:

  • In-Water boat storage
  • Dry outdoor boat storage
  • Dry boat storage indoors

boat storage options

Place You Can Store Your Boat

Some people store their boats in the water all year long. This is usually considered an acceptable practice in temperate areas where winters are relatively mild, or if you completely winterize your boat  in its slip and then add an agitator (ice eater) to keep the water from freezing around the boat during the cold months of the year.

Dry Boat Storage

Dry outdoor boat storage is certainly a more popular option. It’s relatively safe and protective for the boat, and inexpensive compared to most alternatives. Right about now, you’re probably thinking “where is there outdoor boat storage near me?” Or if price is a major factor, maybe you’re thinking “where is there cheap boat storage near me?” We can’t answer those questions specifically, because we don’t know where you live. We do, however, have some good news for you: anywhere you find boats, it’s usually pretty easy to locate inexpensive outdoor boat storage. Almost all marinas and boat yards offer it, as do commercial storage facilities. In popular boating areas there are also plenty of fenced lots used for boat storage in the off-season, and for boat trailer storage during the summer months.

Indoor Boat Storage

Indoor boat storage is a more expensive option, however, it also offers the most protection for your boat. Unfortunately, unless you keep your boat in a covered “dry stack” facility (sometimes called a “boatel,” where the boats sit on huge racks inside of a covered building), it can be very difficult to find indoor boat storage. Unless, of course, you have your own garage the boat fits into—in that case, keeping your boat right there at home is a no-brainer. Assuming that’s not an option, however, that same question we asked earlier is sure to come up: “where is indoor boat storage near me?” But in this case it may be a much more difficult question to answer.

Boat Storage Costs

The exact cost of boat storage depends on two main factors: your location, and the size of your boat. Boat storage prices tend to reflect the local economy, so in areas with a low cost of living, the expense will be far less than in a high-rent district. And of course, just how much space your boat takes up has a huge impact on storage costs.

The range can go anywhere from a couple hundred dollars for a small, trailerable boat parked in a fenced field over the winter, to thousands of dollars for indoor boat storage, to tens of thousands for very large boats kept in a wet slip. As a very rough estimate you can use a figure of $50 per foot of boat for minimal indoor or covered boat storage costs, but in more expensive areas, it can cost as much as $200 per foot for a season—or even more. However, keep one other factor in mind. In most cases if you store your boat in an indoor dry stack facility, it lives there year-round. So if you pay for year-round storage you don’t have to worry about paying for a wet slip through the summer months, and your boat stays protected from the elements all year long. Conversely, if you store your boat permanently in a wet slip you won’t have to worry about finding and paying for winter storage separately. Remember, however, that there will still be yearly haul-out fees for maintenance.

One other detail that can affect storage costs is whether or not your boat is on a trailer. If it is, you can often pay a relatively low rate to leave the boat and trailer in a parking area at a local marina that has a boat ramp, year-round. Remember, however, that few marinas will launch and retrieve your boat for you, so you still need to own a tow vehicle capable of pulling the rig to the boat ramp and then back to its resting spot.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Various Boat Storage Options

For slip holders storing a boat in the water year-round may be more convenient than pulling the boat for dry storage through the winter, but it does carry some risks. If, for example, your marina loses power and the agitator stops working, the hull could become frozen in place and ice damage can occur. So most boat owners opt for dry boat storage during the off-season, especially in parts of the nation with harsh winters. Slip holders who have a lift may also opt to store the boat in place on the lift through the winter. Also, remember that storing your boat in a marina usually comes with some perks. Many have a swimming pool or club house, WiFi, fish-cleaning stations, boat storage boxes mounted on the pier (usually called “dock boxes”) and other amenities that can make your boating adventures even more fun and relaxing.

When it comes to outdoor boat storage , advantages include low expense and easy availability, especially if the boat is sitting on its own trailer. One potential down-side is security, so the facility should be fenced, locked, and have some form of security system or video surveillance. For this reason commercial storage facilities are often a popular option in metropolitan areas. Also, remember that outdoor boat storage requires shrink-wrapping the boat, parking it under a boat storage canopy, or otherwise securely covering it during the winter to prevent water intrusion and weathering.

When it comes to indoor boat storage , expense and availability are the biggest down-sides. Some boaters also don’t like having to plan ahead to use their boat. If you want to use your boat before or after business hours you may need to plan ahead a bit and call ahead of time, so they can fork-lift your boat off the racks and into the water. Finally, some facilities don’t allow boat owners to work on their boats on the site and you may have to pay a pro to do maintenance  like oil changes. Otherwise, storing a boat indoors is ideal. The complete protection from weathering can extend a boat’s lifespan astronomically.

FAQs on Storing Your Boat

How much is winter boat storage?

It varies in different parts of the nation and according to your boat’s size. To get a general idea of the potential costs, you can figure on spending somewhere between $50 and $200 per foot of boat indoors and $20 to $50 per foot of boat for outdoor storage, per season.

How much does boat storage cost?

The cost of storing a boat year-round is no different during summer and winter months for most dry stack facilities, and if you store your boat on land through all four seasons, again, the above mentioned prices can give you some guidelines. When storing your boat in the water in a wet slip, the costs will vary by geography and boat size.

How to wrap a boat for winter storage?

The best way to wrap a boat for winter storage is to have it shrink-wrapped by a professional. The blue tarp method helps to protect your boat, but if the tarp isn’t supported and secured just right, leaks, rips, and complete collapses are common.

How much does dry boat storage cost?

As we mentioned earlier there’s a wide variation in cost depending on boat size and geography, however, remember that covered boat storage is more expensive than open storage and indoor dry boat storage costs significantly more than outdoor boat storage. If you’re wondering, “where is covered boat storage near me?” then you have some searching to do, but remember, in parts of the nation where boating is popular there are usually plenty of options.

How to cover a boat for winter storage?

A professional shrink-wrap job is by far the best way to cover a boat for winter storage.

What is dry storage for boats?

Dry storage for boats is generally considered to be any sort of storage where the boat isn’t kept in a wet-slip, in the water.

  • Larger boats require more space, which costs more for storage. Figure at least 5 ft longer than the boat.
  • Outdoor uncovered storage is the cheapest option at $50-$100/month but provides less protection from the elements.
  • Indoor or covered storage is recommended for winter to protect boats from damage. Cost is around $50/ft.
  • Winter storage for a 25 feet boat at an indoor facility can cost over $1000 for the season.
  • Storing on land is cheaper than keeping a boat in the water, but less convenient access.
  • To protect stored boats, use shrink wrap, boat covers, winterize systems, charge batteries, and avoid leaks.
  • Check with private owners on services like Neighbor to find deals on storage versus marina prices.

Average Boat Storage Costs

Factors impacting boat storage costs, tips for choosing boat storage, key factors when evaluating where to store your boat, planning for winter boat storage, what to expect with indoor storage facilities, storing your boat on land vs in the water, finding affordable options for boat and rv storage, key tips for protecting your boat in storage.

The average cost to store a boat ranges from $50-$250 per month, depending on:

  • Location  – Coastal regions with high demand charge more. Inland lakes charge less.
  • Size  – Larger boats need bigger spaces, which cost more. Figure at least 5 feet longer than the boat.
  • Type  – Outdoor uncovered is cheapest. Indoor is most expensive but most secure.
  • Service  – Marinas charge more. Private owners on sites like Neighbor offer deals.

Figure about $100/month for a 20 ft boat. Bigger boats can run up to $250/month for indoor storage.

Popular boating areas like Florida have higher demand so storage costs more. Landlocked places like Pennsylvania have fewer specialized options and lower prices.

Bigger boats need more space. Figure storage size 5 feet longer than the boat.

Type of Storage

Also called wet slip storage. Costs $25-$50 per foot per month. Convenient since you can access the boat year-round but requires haul out for maintenance.

Uncovered Outdoor

Cheapest at $50-$100/month but exposes the boat to elements. Must use a cover. Easy to find storage lots but not boat-specific.

Covered Outdoor

$75-$150/month. Provides cover from sun/rain but still outdoors. Carport is an option. Storage with Neighbor is affordable.

Most expensive at $100-$250/month but most secure. Self-storage, warehouses, and dry stacked common options. Allows maintenance without haul out.

  • Consider convenience of location if you boat frequently
  • Allow room for maintenance – avoid cramped spaces
  • Assess protection level needed – indoor best for harsh weather
  • Look beyond marinas for deals from private owners on Neighbor
  • Use a trailer for outdoor storage to allow mobililty
  • Add a boat cover for outdoor storage to protect from sun/rain
  • Discuss any electrical needs for maintenance beforehand
  • Ensure outdoor storage is fully secure – look for fencing/cameras
  • Have a maintenance plan for checking systems, charging batteries, etc.
  • Ask about launch and retrieval services if available

Finding the right boat storage solution requires weighing your needs, convenience, costs, and the level of protection necessary. Do your research to find the optimal blend of affordability and security for your specific situation.

Many boat owners opt for indoor or covered storage facilities during the winter months to keep their vessels protected from the elements. This is especially important in colder climates where boats left outdoors or in the water can sustain damage from freezing temperatures, snow, and ice.

Indoor storage facilities like marinas often charge around $50 per foot for winter storage rates. For a large boat that’s 25 feet long, you may need to budget up to $1,250 for a full winter of indoor storage. Storage facilities will often offer additional services like shrink-wrapping your boat or winterizing motors and systems. Make sure to inquire about all costs before committing.

Storing your boat in the water is convenient if you want year-long access, but can cost thousands per year at local marinas. Many boat owners opt for dry storage on land during winter months. This keeps your boat protected and you won’t have to worry about ice damage. Just make sure you have a plan to transport your boat and trailer to the storage facility.

The cost of off-season boat storage depends on many variables, but indoor units will generally be the most expensive option. If you’re looking to save on storage, consider covered outdoor storage which will still keep your boat protected. Outdoor storage spaces rented from private owners through services like Neighbor are also often much cheaper than traditional boat storage facilities.

  • Use shrink wrap or invest in a boat cover
  • Winterize the motor and systems
  • Charge batteries monthly and run the engine if possible
  • Check for leaks along the hull when storing on land
  • Ensure outdoor storage is fully secure with fences and lighting
  • Avoid cramped storage spaces – allow room for access

I would place the winter storage information right after the general storage tips section, as winter protection is a key consideration for many boat owners looking for storage. The added sections provide helpful details specifically around winter storage costs, options, and preparation.

When looking for a place to store your boat, you have several options to choose from. Some popular choices include marinas, indoor storage facilities, outdoor storage lots, and dry stack storage . Each of these options has its own set of advantages and drawbacks.

Marina storage or wet slip storage is ideal for those of you who frequently use your boats. This is a type of boat storage that provides a dock or mooring for boats to be tied up to. Marinas can be indoor or outdoor and can provide various amenities such as fuel, electricity, and water.

In marinas , the typical cost of storing a boat ranges from $5 to $30 per foot every month , with an average cost of around $10 per foot per month. Your costs could be lower or higher depending on factors such as location, season, and boat length. Generally, prices can vary significantly between shorter stays and longer stays.

Indoor storage

Indoor storage provides better protection from the elements and typically costs between $8 and $18 per foot of your boat per month , making it the more expensive option. Indoor storage costs are closer to $125 per foot. These facilities can be climate-controlled or non-climate-controlled and can provide added security features.

  • Indoor storage without a trailer: Approximately $8.25 per square foot
  • Indoor storage with a trailer: Approximately $7.25 per square foot
If you're wondering whether you need to winterize an indoor-stored boat , here's the answer.

Outdoor storage

Outdoor storage is a cheaper alternative, with prices for storing a small boat on a trailer in an uncovered outdoor lot ranging from $45 to $90 per month . Outdoor storage usually has a seasonal cost of about $35 per foot .

Outdoor storage is the most affordable but offers the least protection from weather elements. This type of storage typically costs around $7.50 per foot with a trailer.

Dry stack storage

This type of storage is a vertical storage system that is used to store boats in a covered area . Boats are stacked on top of each other and are typically launched using a forklift when needed. This type of storage is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in areas where space is limited.

One of the main advantages of dry stack storage is that it provides a secure and protected storage solution for boats. Boats are stored out of the water, which helps to prevent damage from exposure to the elements such as sun, wind, and saltwater. This can help to prolong the life of the boat and reduce the need for maintenance and repairs.

Buying vs. renting a boat storage

Owning a boat storage space can be a good long-term investment if you plan to store your boat for many years. On the other hand, renting a storage space can be more cost-effective, especially for short-term use. Rental costs can range from $50 to $250 per month depending on the location, boat size, and type of storage.

Climate-controlled vs. non-climate-controlled storage

Storing your boat in a climate-controlled space can help prevent damage caused by excessive heat, cold, or humidity. Although more expensive, the additional protection offered by climate-controlled storage can prolong your boat's lifespan and reduce long-term maintenance costs. High-end facilities often offer temperature-controlled indoor storage, which can be more expensive than outdoor storage with no temperature control.

Recreational boats vs. commercial boats

Commercial boats are generally larger, requiring more storage space, which increases the overall cost of storage. Additionally, commercial boat storage facilities may offer specialized services such as fuel storage and maintenance support, further impacting costs.

Variable costs when storing your boat

Size of the boat.

Generally, larger boats require more space and, therefore, higher storage fees. Smaller vessels, such as jet skis and fishing boats, can fit into more affordable storage spaces, while larger watercraft like sport boats and pontoons will require pricier options.

Duration of storage

Some facilities offer discounts for long-term storage, while others may have seasonal rates. It's essential to consider how long you require storage and choose a facility accordingly.

Accessibility

Easier access to storage spaces, such as drive-up or dock-side storage, may come with a premium price. If you want to reduce inconvenience, make sure you choose a storage location that is easily accessible.

Storage facility amenities

Some storage facilities offer extra services like boat maintenance, cleaning, security, and boat repair, which can increase the cost. While these services might come at an additional fee, they can be a valuable resource to help keep your boat in tip-top shape.

Security features : Facilities with higher security levels, such as video surveillance and gated access, may charge a fee for that peace of mind. Analyze the security features at the boat storage facilities to ensure your boat will remain safe. Look for facilities with gated access, cameras, and 24/7 monitoring.

Covered vs. uncovered : Covered storage offers some level of protection against rain and sun damage, while uncovered storage is more affordable but less protective.

Maintenance services : Some facilities offer maintenance services for an additional fee, such as regular cleaning, engine checks, and battery charging.

If you're looking for something more affordable, self-storage facilities offer boat storage prices as low as $50 a month and up to $400 a month . Boat owners can rent storage units on a monthly basis, and they can access their boats at any time during the facility's operating hours. Many facilities offer 24-hour access to units, while others may have limited access hours.

Self-storage facilities for boats provide a convenient and secure storage solution for boat owners, particularly in areas where space is limited and traditional boat storage options may not be available. With a range of unit sizes and flexible rental options, self-storage for boats can be an affordable and practical solution for anyone in need of extra storage space for their boat.

How to reduce boat storage costs

As a boat owner, you might be looking for ways to reduce the costs when storing your boat . In this section, we'll explore three strategies that can help you save on boat storage costs: seasonal discounts, multi-boat discounts, and long-term contract discounts.

Seasonal discounts

Seasonal discounts are often available at many boat storage facilities. These discounts can be particularly helpful if you only need storage during specific times of the year, like winter or hurricane season. To take advantage of seasonal discounts, you can:

  • Research different storage facilities in your area and compare their rates and discounts during off-peak seasons.
  • Approach the facilities directly and inquire about any available seasonal promotions they have.
  • Keep track of possible price fluctuations and time your storage rental accordingly so that you can maximize savings.

Multi-boat discounts

Do you own multiple boats or know other boat owners who are in need of storage? In many cases, storage facilities provide multi-boat discounts to customers who rent storage space for more than one vessel. With this approach, you can:

  • Form a group with other boat owners to secure multiple storage slots.
  • Negotiate a discounted rate with the storage facility based on the number of boats being stored.
  • Look for storage facilities that specifically advertise discounts for multiple boat rentals.

Long-term contract discounts

Finally, long-term contract discounts can be another great way to reduce boat storage costs. Many facilities offer reduced rates to customers who commit to storing their boats for an extended period. To benefit from these discounts:

  • Assess your boat storage needs and determine whether a long-term contract could be a good fit for you.
  • Compare the long-term rates offered by different storage facilities, considering factors such as location, security, and amenities.
  • Make sure to read the contract terms carefully, as there may be additional fees or restrictions associated with long-term storage agreements.

The Complete Guide to Boat Storage Costs

' src=

Owning a boat can change your life in more ways than one. Whether you simply want to fish at a nearby body of water or use it for longer vacations, a boat is a massive boon to your spare time. At the same time, owning a boat is also a massive responsibility. Given the cost of purchasing a reliable vessel, you need to make sure you treat it right and maintain it well. Of course, part of that equation is boat storage costs for when you’re not using it.

Storage solutions come with plenty of caveats. Chief among them, naturally, is the cost to store your ship. In this boat storage costs guide, we explore the various options you have and how much your finances will be impacted.

How Much Does It Cost to Store Your Boat?

On average, you can expect to pay between $50 and $250 per month to store your boat. That relatively wide range largely comes down to a few central variables:

  • The location in which you want to store your boat
  • The size of your boat and, as an extension, the size of the storage space you need
  • The type of storage you prefer for your boat
  • The service through which you rent your storage space

Let’s break each of these distinctions down into more details to determine the price of finding the right boat storage option for your needs.

How Neighbor is changing boat storage

Transparent monthly savings.

Renters save 30-50% on boat storage, on average. No rate hikes.

Keep your boat nearby

25,000 locations means that your boat is always close by.

Storage made simple

Don't settle for stone age tech and long contracts. Neighbor makes it easy.

How Location Impacts Your Boat Storage Costs

The location impacts the price of boat storage primarily due to simple supply and demand. For example, if you live in a popular coastal area like Florida, you will likely find more options to store your boat. At the same time, some of the more desirable types of boat storage (like in-water storage directly at a popular marina) will likely also be more expensive due to the high number of vessels that need this type of service.

In a landlocked location like Pennsylvania, on the other hand, highly specialized boat storage tends to be more expensive simply because less of it exists. But, because not as many people need to store boats in this region, the more general types of storage units are typically less expensive than they would be in coastal regions.

How the Size of Your Boat Impacts the Price of Boat Storage

The size of your boat primarily matters for storage costs because it impacts the type of spot, or lot, you need to consider. When storing your boat on land, these costs tend to be similar to the price of RV storage , largely due to similar length requirements. Consider these different sizes and their associated costs:

When in doubt, ask the storage facility whether it stores boats and what unit size it recommends for vessels that are similar in size to yours.

Pro Tip for Choosing the Size Requirements of Your Boat Storage Space Always plan with at least five feet of wiggle room around your boat to make sure that you have easy access and can potentially perform maintenance tasks while the boat is in storage.

4 Types of Boat Storage and Their Costs

The next variable can make perhaps the biggest difference in your exact boat storage costs. Depending on your location, you have four options to store your boat:

  • In the water
  • Outside and uncovered
  • Outside but covered
  • An indoor facility

Each of these comes with its own cost considerations, as well as both advantages and disadvantages.

Save up to $1,200/year on boat storage

The cost of storing your boat in the water.

Storing your boat in the water is the most expensive option, typically costing between $25 and $50 per foot of length for each month the boat is in storage. For a 20-foot boat, that could mean a $1,000 storage cost.

Many marinas offer this option, using so-called “wet slips .” It’s a convenient option because you can continue to use your boat all year long. Also, you don’t need to figure out how to transport it to a different facility.

However, in addition to its expense, this option can also be problematic when it comes to maintenance. Boats need to be out of the water at least once per year for maintenance and upkeep on the exterior, which in this case will require an extra cost to move the vessel to a facility for its annual check-up.

The Cost of Storing Your Boat Uncovered Outside

Dry boat storage comes in many different forms. Uncovered outdoor storage is the cheapest option for boats and costs between $50 and $100 for most lots. You won’t find many uncovered outdoor storage spaces specifically designed for boats, so this is also the option with the most caveats.

To start with, your boat will not be protected from the elements. As a result, using a cover or wrap is absolutely essential to avoid wearing down or damaging the interior. You also have to store it on a dedicated trailer to make hauling it from and to the lot easier.

However, outdoor and uncovered storage might be your only option. This is an especially common scenario if you are in a landlocked area without much dedicated boat storage. But the low price means that you should be able to more easily afford the cover, trailer, and other secondary costs you will need to consider.

The Cost of Storing Your Boat Covered Outside

A popular option for people not comfortable with no protection at all is covered boat storage. This option costs between $75 and $150 for most typical boat and lot sizes. The storage is still outdoors. But it has a layer of protection through a cover or roof that minimizes exposure to the sun and other elements.

In your own home, a carport can easily replace or come close to this storage option. If you don’t have that space available, covered self-storage is easily available through services like Neighbor. For many boat owners, this is a good middle ground between protection and a reasonable price.

The Cost of Storing Your Boat Indoors

The final option to store your boat is at an indoor facility, which costs between $100 and $250 for most common sizes. As with the other storage types outlined above, you have a few different options if this is the route you want to go. These options include:

  • Indoor self-storage, which includes spaces like a garage or simple storage unit
  • A larger warehouse, which is typically offered by marinas and other facilities close to the water
  • Dry stacked storage, in which boats are stored in a warehouse on racks

While indoor storage tends to be on the higher end of the range of boat storage costs, it also is a preferred option for many boat owners. That’s because it allows you to complete annual maintenance tasks without having to move the boat. At the same time, these options provide full protection against the elements the entire time your boat is in storage. Self-storage is more common in landlocked areas, while warehouse and dry stacked storage are popular close to bodies of water.

Saving Boat Storage Costs by Renting Through Neighbor

When determining boat storage costs, the final variable is how you find and rent the space in which your vessel will spend the off-season. Almost every marina offers its own options or storage space partnerships, but they can quickly become expensive.

A service like Neighbor can play a large role in bringing those costs down because it cuts out the middleman. Individuals can advertise their own storage solutions, free for others to take, making it an ideal solution for boat owners who are looking for the best storage without breaking the bank. Look for affordable boat storage options in your area by searching through Neighbor today.

Let’s face it: With all the gear and equipment you need to have for a good time out at sea, a boat can be a cluttered, busy place. Whether it’s charts and safety equipment or essentials for making your boat feel like home, your boat can quickly feel like a messy floating storage unit if it’s not organized properly.

That being said, organizing your gear and belongings on a boat is a bit trickier than when on land. In reality, just because your organization system works in your home doesn’t mean it will work on your boat. In fact, it probably won’t.

If keeping your boat organized feels like an insurmountable task, we understand. Thankfully, we have some tips and tricks for keeping your boat clean and orderly without breaking the bank or driving you bonkers. Interested in learning how to keep your recreational boat organized? Let’s get started!

1. Waterproof Storage Bags

2. marine rope organizer, 3. cargo nets, 4. door hanger, 5. plastic storage bins, 6. in-drawer organizers, 7. hanging baskets, 8. helm organizers, 9. cup holders, 10. shoe organizer, 11. magnetic strips, 12. in-stair drawers, 13. wall racks, 14. t-top organizer, 15. wall rails, 16. compression packing cubes, start with the blueprints, make a list, start organizing, install additional storage, storage ideas for your boat.

Okay, now that you understand how storage is different on a boat compared to on land, let’s dive into the world of boat storage ideas. It turns out that there’s a whole lot of different ways to store essentials and small luxuries on a boat, it’s just about making your space work for your needs. Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas:

yacht boat storage

If you’re looking to store gear on deck, a storage bag is a solid option. These water, rot, and mildew-resistant bags usually sling over a railing and feature a number of pockets, which keep your essential supplies easily accessible.

Earth Pak are my favorite storage bags for organizing gear above deck. They have a fold down top which makes them completely waterproof. The one here is available in 50L or 70L sizes.

This is the boat organizer you didn’t know you needed until now. The rope organizer is ideal for capturing all those anchor lines lying around on deck.

It’s made from durable fabric that’s coated to be water repellent so you don’t need to worry about mold or rot occurring on the material. In fact, the manufacturers reckon it will last longer than your boat itself.

If you buy this product from Surf Monkey Gear, you can even get it customized with your name (or even the name of your boat!).

Cargo nets are a fantastic way to keep equipment organized within a hatch or locker as they can secure items to the frame of the boat to prevent them from rolling around. Alternatively, a cargo net could be placed in a good location to hold onto inflatables, lifejackets, and the like while on the water.

yacht boat storage

Make use of the space on the back of your cabin door with a handy door organizer or hanging pockets. The hooks at the top will allow it to hang over any door without additional hardware.

There are plenty of options available with sizes for all sorts of boats. This Simple Houseware hanger is one example which is 36 1/4″ with four pockets.

If you find some bright and colorful pockets, you can make it look stylish whilst still providing valuable boat interior storage.

If you have a lot of small items that need organizing, a plastic storage bin can make it easy to keep all your gear in one place. These plastic storage devices are perfect for keeping smaller gadgets in place inside a larger cabinet or can be used on their own. Plus, they’re easy to clean and often come with holes so they can quickly drain water away from wet gear when necessary.

yacht boat storage

Drawers are great ways to store your essential items, but they can get messy pretty darn quickly. Drawer dividers can help you keep your boat’s built-in storage units even more organized so you can quickly find the item you need.

These days, drawer dividers come in a whole slew of different shapes and sizes so you can organize even the most cluttered of drawers. This example here is shown with make-up, but can be used for utensils, food, stationery, toys, or anything else you need onboard.

yacht boat storage

While a boat might have limited drawer and cabinet space, we often have plenty of room for over-the-head storage. Indeed, overhead spaces are often the least utilized locations for storage, despite the fact that they can be a fantastic way to maximize a space’s efficiency.

If you’re looking for more storage space in your galley or cabin areas, consider using a hanging basket or storage hammocks to organize some of your gear. Some storage hammocks, such as the one shown here can be used to store fruits and vegetables, bread, or other delicate items in your galley.

yacht boat storage

It has been designed especially for boats, even with small holes around the top to hang keys, hooks, fishing gear, and other small items.

yacht boat storage

Cup holders are an often-overlooked part of any vessel, despite the fact that they can help keep your relaxation areas much more organized when on the water. Commercially available cup holder systems can turn your outer deck into a comfortable lounging area with ease. Alternatively, they can be great for use inside the galley area, especially if you’re expecting some rock and roll during your voyage.

yacht boat storage

Especially if you like to be out on the water in a warm environment, shoes can quickly become a hazard on deck as people leave them behind when walking about the vessel.

A small canvas shoe organizer can quickly be draped over your boat’s railing to create a quick and easy storage system on the fly.

yacht boat storage

Wall-mounted magnetic strips are a great way to quickly and safely store tools, knives, and other essentials on your boat. These magnetic bars keep your most important items easily accessible at all times while simultaneously keeping them in a safe location, even as your boat pitches and rolls at sea .

Depending on the size of your boat, you may have stairs that lead from the outer decks into the main cabin. If you have enough room, a set of in-stair drawers can help you use this otherwise dead space for organization and storage of items that you want to have easily accessible. Just make sure to install magnetic latches so the drawers don’t constantly slide open and closed!

yacht boat storage

A small wall rack can be a great way to use wall space for storage on your boat. Small racks, such as the ones shown here can be used to organize a spice rack or other small containers in your galley for easy access during meal times.

It’s also possible to DIY your own rack out of wood. However, If you do this, be sure to use bungee cords to secure objects to the rack, even when at sea.

yacht boat storage

This next recommendation is a great pontoon boat storage idea. Put all that spare space in your T-top, bimini top or pontoon top to good use with a purpose-designed storage bag such as the one shown here.

Although designed with lifejackets in mind, they could easily be used for other belongings too. The one shown here has 2 zippered compartments and 3 mesh pockets which can be used for any boating gear.

yacht boat storage

Whether your fitting storage space in your powerboat or sailboat, chances are that you have plenty of spare wall space. You can make use of this extra room by installing wall rails.

These are similar to the rails you’ll find in a traditional kitchen that are suitable for holding pots, pans, and utensils. However, they can be used for all sorts of items from wet clothing to fishing gear. Just make sure you have enough S-hooks if you plan to hang lots of items from them.

yacht boat storage

When you think of packing cubes, you might associate them with heading off on exotic vacations. However, their space-saving design can be ideal for smaller boats where storage is a problem.

Once you have loaded your clothes and other belongings into the cubes, the second zip on the side can be closed to make your items super compact. This can allow you to save space in your wardrobe, sometimes taking up to 25% less space compared to regular packing cubes.

I’ve personally tried these Gonex cubes and was impressed at the quality given the budget price tag. They are available in three different sizes, all made with nylon which is one of the best synthetic materials when it comes to the strength-to-weight ratio.

Until this point, we’ve spent a lot of time discussing the various things you can do to add storage to your boat. However, it’s important to keep in mind that many boats already have built-in storage units – you just need to know how to maximize the space you already have.

Depending on the type of boat you own, you may already have a large amount of cabinetry and shelving units built into the interior spaces of your vessel. Most sailing and motor yachts that are meant for voyages on the open ocean will have ample racks, drawers, and under-seat lockers for securing objects while underway.

Additionally, even boats without an interior cabin will almost always have some sort of above-deck locker or two that can be used to store emergency equipment, anchors, secondary sails, and the like while on the water. Ultimately, it comes down to making good use of what you already have and supplementing your storage needs accordingly.

Organization Tips For Your Boat

Although many of us like to keep our homes clean and organized, it’s important to recognize that keeping a boat tidy requires some extra consideration that’s just not necessary when you’re on dry land. Thus, if you’re new to the world of boat storage, you may not yet understand the ins and outs of tidiness at sea. Here are a few ways that organization at sea is different from cleanliness on land:

  • Make use of all the nooks and crannies

If you’ve ever been below decks on a boat, you’ll know that space is limited. Unlike your home, where you might have room to stretch out and create lots of open space, on a boat, spaces are necessarily cramped, unless you own a large yacht with 100 cabins.

Therefore, while you might manage to nicely arrange all of your belongings in a fashionable manner at home, that tactic probably won’t fly when you’re on a boat. When you store items on a boat, you’ll use every little nook and cranny you can find. This includes under-seat lockers, lockers above deck, and makeshift cabinets and drawers. If there’s empty space on a small boat , you can be sure that it’ll be used to store something while at sea.

  • Remember, a boat can get very wet

When you store your personal belongings at home, you rarely have to worry about them getting wet (unless they’re in a bathroom or outside). On a boat, however, leaking windows and general life on the water means that most things inside your boat will likely get wet at some point, so you need to prepare accordingly.

Thus, if you have certain belongings that just can’t get wet, such as charts and sensitive electronics, consider alternative measures you can take to keep them dry. Protective cases and plastic bins, while not foolproof, can come in handy in these instances.

  • Secure your storage ready for the waves

Perhaps the number one thing to consider when planning your storage spaces on your vessel is that boats move. This might be obvious to many of us, but if you haven’t spent much time out on the water before, you may not realize what effect the pitch and roll of a boat can have on all of your belongings.

yacht boat storage

  • Consider accessibility

Since boats are often quite cramped below decks, you’ll want to consider how accessible each object needs to be during the day when you decide where to store it. If it’s a piece of safety equipment or something you often need to use above deck, perhaps consider storing it there, too, to avoid having to leave the helm to search for an object during your passage.

Alternatively, spare linens and extra dishtowels probably don’t need to take up a lot of prime real estate in your boat’s galley. A little bit of thought here can help alleviate a lot of frustration down the line.

How to Plan Your Boat Storage

Before we wrap this up and send you off to organize your own recreational boat, it’s important to take some time to plan out your boat storage before you just go out and start drilling holes in your boat for new cabinetry or buying new plastic bins for your smaller items.

Indeed, boat storage can get incredibly complex, so it’s imperative that all boat owners take the time to adequately pre-plan their storage layout so things don’t inadvertently become too complex or cluttered. Here are some tips to get you started:

If you can make a visual layout of where all the best storage areas are in your boat, it’ll be easier for you to identify places where you can potentially add new storage without interrupting the natural flow of movement around your vessel. Take note of any built-in areas and how accessible they are. You can also start to identify which of your areas can be used for what type of items (e.g. food, galley supplies, emergency equipment).

Next, you’ll want to make a list of all of the items you’ll need to store. You don’t need to get to specific, just make a general outline of all the gear you have that needs to be stored appropriately. Depending on the size of your boat, this might be a quick process, but if you have a sailing or motor yacht, you may need to spend a lot of time contemplating what it is that you actually need to store.

Once you have your list complete, you can start to assign various objects to appropriate storage locations. Place objects in storage areas purposefully and consider both the size and the shape of the storage location (especially important for built-ins) before using them. This will help you make better use of every square inch of available space in your boat.

Once you’ve used up all of the built-in storage in your boat, it’s time to install additional storage. This can be as simple as a helm organizer or as complex as installing a set of wall-mounted cabinets. What’s important here is that you don’t go around drilling holes and adding new storage places to your boat until you’ve fully used what you already have. This will help limit clutter on your boat and keep things more organized when you’re underway.

Dry Stack Boat Storage: What Is It And Why You Should Consider It

Dry Stack Interior

If you’re like most boat owners, then you probably don’t have enough room to store your boat at home. You may have thought about storing it in a marina , but that can be expensive, and there’s no guarantee that there will be space available when you need it. A better option might be dry stack boat storage . This is a relatively new type of storage that is becoming increasingly popular because of its many advantages over traditional wet storage. In this article, we will discuss what dry stack storage is and why you should consider using it!

Dry Stack Storage Explained

Dry stack storage is a type of storage that is designed specifically for boats. Unlike traditional wet storage, which involves storing your boat in the water at a marina, dry stack storage keeps your boat out of the water and on land. The boats are stored on racks, which allow them to be stacked on top of each other.

While it may seem beneficial to have your boat already prepped and in the water, most Dry Stack Storage facilities offer service to have your boat in the water and ready for you when you are ready to use it in addition to many of the other benefits that dry stack storage brings to the table.

Advantages of Dry Stack Boat Storage

There are many advantages to using dry stack storage over traditional wet storage, including weather protection, concierge service, 24/7 security, convenience, and overall availability.

Weather Protection

One of the biggest advantages of dry stack boat storage is that it protects your boat from the elements. Whether it’s sun, rain, snow, or ice, your boat will be safe and sound on its rack. This is especially important if you live in areas with extreme weather conditions.

In areas like North Idaho, this will remove the need to have your boat wrapped for the winter months, and the wear and tear that leaving your boat in and out of the water can cause.

Concierge Service

Another advantage of dry stack boat storage is that most facilities offer concierge services. This means that someone will be available to help you with anything you need, whether it’s launching your boat, fueling it up, or making sure you’ve got lunch ready for your day out on the lake.

This is a great perk for those who don’t have the time or the knowledge to do everything themselves. It also takes a lot of the stress out of boating, so you can relax and enjoy yourself!

Possibly the best benefit of housing your boat in dry stack storage is the security that most facilities offer. Because the boats are stored on racks, anyone looking to steal or vandalize your boat is out of luck.

You can rest easy knowing that your boat is safe and sound, even if you’re not there to watch over it.

Availability

While marina slips can be limited during boating season,  dry stack storage facilities usually have plenty of space. This means that you’re more likely to get a spot for your boat even when all the marina slips are already filled.

Atkinson is amazing. We were trying to find a place to store our vehicles, and Donna did not disappoint. We had many unexpected hurdles and challenges, and the team went over and beyond what was needed to make sure our needs were met. If you need a place to store your vehicle, Atkinson is it.

Man gets realistic picture of his boat painted on a fence intended to hide it

A California man who was ordered to keep his boat out of sight has had the last laugh by commissioning an artist to paint a realistic image of it on the fence that obscures it.

Local government officials told Etienne Constable, of Seaside, California, in July that he had to build a 6-foot fence to hide the boat from view of his neighbors.

In a light-hearted jibe at officialdom, Constable decided to follow the directive, which said nothing about how the fence should be decorated, and asked local artist Hanif Panni to create a mural that makes it look as if the fence isn't there.

"I’m not a rule-breaker, but I like to make a political statement as necessary, as well as a humorous statement and a creative statement," he told NBC affiliate KSBW of Monterey Bay .

Man paints boat on fence erected to conceal boat

He is yet to have had any contact from the city about the mural — but he said he considers it to be covered by the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the First Amendment.

"The reaction is extremely more than we ever expected, and we’re both just tickled about it," Constable said, referring to the stir the image has made on social media, where it has been shared many times.

Panni, who paints images across the Central Coast area, told KSBW: "I’m a big proponent of public art in spaces. It engages people in ways that reaching out and having conversations doesn’t sometimes."

And Panni added that since the Seaside boat mural has gone viral, other boat owners have approached him to see whether he can do the same for them.
