And the list is growing

car brand yachts

Bugatti made an early start, and Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin soon followed suit. But even Ferrari tried building a boat in the past. Let's look at all the speed boats built by car manufacturers.

1. Bugatti Niniette by Palmer Johnson

The makers of the world’s fastest production car, Bugatti, and one of the largest motor yacht builders in the world, Palmer Johnson, have embarked on a joint project. Bugatti has granted Palmer Johnson the license to design and build a series of elegant open carbon-fiber yachts. Those yachts will feature distinctive Bugatti design elements and innovative materials. The series of yachts will bear the name Niniette and will be available in three models ranging from 42 feet to 88 feet (13-27 meters). Prices start from two million dollars for the smallest model.

2. Mercedes-Benz Arrow 460 GranTurismo

Arrow 460 Granturismo is a 14-meter sports boat developed by Daimler in cooperation with Silver Arrows Marine.

The official press release dubs it the “Silver Arrow of the Seas” in direct reference to the silver arrow cars produced by Mercedes. The yacht has classic automobile proportions that bring the hallmark Mercedes design idiom of sensual purity onto the water in a highly emotional and dynamic form. The yacht also combines the advantages of an open boat with those of a hull cabin cruiser in a unique fashion. Its crossover design offers the ultimate in variability, resulting in a boat that is equally suitable for day trips and overnight stays on board.

The 14 meters long vessel is propelled by a pair of Yanmar 6LY3-ETP diesel engines, each developing 480 hp. Top speed is over 40 knots.

3. Aston Martin AM37 by Quintessence

The British sports carmaker is collaborating with Quintessence Yachts to build the AM37 sports boat. It’s an opulent wooden decked powerboat that will be right at home in Venice or Monaco. The vessel is produced by Quintessence Yachts and it fuses maritime and automotive design motifs. The interior, for example, is very car-like, down to the steering wheel.

The 37-foot (11m) model is available in two versions – the AM37 with an estimated top speed of 45 knots and a choice of two 370 hp Mercury diesel or two 430 hp Mercury petrol engines. And the AM37S version with an estimated 50 knots derived from its twin 520 hp Mercury petrol engines.

4. Jaguar Concept Speedboat

Back in 2012, Jaguar teamed up with Canadian yacht designer Ivan Erdevicki to create a speed boat concept. It was used to promote the new, at that time, Jaguar XF Sportbrake.

"The Concept Speedboat looks powerful. It follows, in so many ways, the idea of a traditional speedboat but with the sleek and fast characteristics that you would expect from a Jaguar Car" , said Ian Callum, director of design for Jaguar.

5. Lexus Sport Yacht Concept

Inspired by the Toyota branded boats that sell in Japan, Lexus decided that is time to flex its muscles in the marine industry. So, this is the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept: an open sport yacht for day touring with six or eight guests. The 12.7m boat is powered by twin 440 hp 5.0-liter Lexus V8 engines. It's the same engine as the one the Lexus RC-F uses. Top speed is 43 knots.

It's a one-off project and Lexus says that has no intention for mass production. The concept was built in collaboration with Marquis-Carver Yacht Group of Pulaski, Wisconsin, USA.

6. Sacs – Lancia

In 2010, Italian RIB manufacturer Sacs teamed up with Lancia and Martini to create a special boat for the Venice Film Festival.

The new boat has been developed jointly by four Italian companies: Sacs, who produce luxury RIBs; FPT, a company in the Fiat Group and manufacturer of the “best in class” engines and Martini, regular partner of Lancia in the field of racing.

The 13m RIB was powered by wo N67-560 engines by Fiat Powertrain Technologies. Top speed is 55 knots!

7. Ferrari – Riva

Riva and Ferrari are two brands that don't need presentation. Riva is currently a sponsor for the Ferrari Formula 1 Team, but in the past the two companies teamed up to build a special boat: the Riva Ferrari 32 Speedboat from 1990.

Only 30 pieces built, it is today a rare example of the collaboration between the two Italian premium brands. It was a Formula 1 styled hull, painted in Ferrari Rosso Corsa hue and with a black carbon fiber spoiler on top. It had plenty of power: two 390 hp V8 Vulcano 400 engines for a top speed of over 50 knots.

The list doesn't stop here. Henrik Fisker , the famous designer that once worked for Aston Martin and later created his own car brand, has designed a superyacht for Benetti .

Even Porsche Design , the style branch of the german company was involved in creating a yacht for Royal Falcon Fleet that is still under construction.

The coolest yacht and car collaborations

Automotive design on the water is far from a novel concept. Superyacht designers have been borrowing ideas from the car world for years, often citing the curve of a wheel arch or swept-back profile of a sportscar as inspiration. But when car marques team up with shipyards, a new breed of crossover emerges. We take a look at the coolest yacht-car collaborations in recent years...

Frauscher X Porsche

Automotive giant Porche has entered the electric boat market in an exclusive collaboration with Austrian boatbuilder Frauscher. The 8.67-metre-long day cruiser is based on the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air but equipped with the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) drive technology of the future Porsche Macan. This includes a lithium-ion high voltage battery with a total capacity of around 100 kWh, a permanently excited synchronous electric motor (PSM) of the latest generation and the related power electronics. Thanks to the 800-volt technology from Porsche, the electric boat can be charged at DC fast-charging stations, with AC charging also possible.

Like the Frauscher 858 Fantom Air with a conventional drivetrain, the electric version accommodates up to nine passengers. Design highlights include a rear swimming platform, a generous lounge area with sun pads and a premium sound system. Porsche will play a significant role in the design of the seats and upholstery.

Delivery of a first edition of 25 units is anticipated for 2024 with the option to preorder already available.

Candela X Polestar: C-8

With the electric performance car brand Polestar already supplying battery technology to the hydrofoil electric boat builder Candela , this merging of these Swedish innovators isn’t a surprise. The trailblazers have teamed up to create a limited edition version of its popular foiling Candela C-8.

Design maintains that of the existing hydrofoil design but is now paired with the carmaker’s refined palette of colour and materials, including a light grey hue for the hull, seat upholstery that mirrors contemporary car interiors, and hydrofoils finished in iconic Swedish gold. The C-8 has a range of around 57 nautical miles and cruises at an impressive 22 knots.

“Candela’s hydrofoil technology is a paradigm shift for sustainable performance in the marine industry. Like the first time driving an electric car, you instantly feel that this is the future when the boat ‘takes off’ – and now with the special gold details that we so proudly exhibit on our cars,” said Maximilian Missoni, head of design at Polestar.

BMW X TYDE: The Icon

The iconic German car brand BMW teamed up with the tech start-up TYDE to unveil a 13.5-metre foiling boat dubbed The Icon . The flat trimaran-style hull with its transparent "prism-like" superstructure and angular and pointed lines turned heads at its debut in this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The battery-powered boat, sourced from BMW's innovative i3, provides 240kWh of power to a pair of 100kW motors, enabling a range of up to 50 nautical miles and a top speed of 30 knots. Hydrofoil technology from Tyde has been used to reduce energy requirements by up to 80 per cent, avoiding drag and increasing range.

BMW has integrated its authentic touches throughout the boat resulting in a standout cabin experience. The car giant took inspiration from its high-end cars delivering an onboard 'soundscape' composed by Hans Zimmer through a Dolby Atmos system. While the BMW-designed helming station comprises a sole digital control unit with a 32-inch touch unit with 6k resolution designed to look and feel like the BMW iDrive operating system. Although a one-off, The Icon showcases the potential and future of electric vessels and collaborations between road and sea.

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63

Born out of a partnership between the two Italian brands, The Italian Sea Group and Automobili Lamborghini, this sports car inspired 19.2-metre pocket superyacht combines a lightweight boat design with supercar expertise.

The futuristic and sporty design profile with an aerodynamic hardtop has been inspired by the hybrid Lamborghini Sian FKP 37. Meaning “flash of lightning” in Italian, it is the fastest model in the Tecnomar fleet, reaching a top speed of 60 knots thanks to a pair of MAN V-12 2000hp engines.

Meanwhile, inside, the interior boasts clean lines, hexagonal shapes, and Italian-made materials. The bridge controls and navigational panels have been inspired by sportscar cockpits, with a helm styled to look like a car steering wheel.

The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 references the year the supercar brand was established and marks its first foray into the yachting world. Since its launch, the brand has delivered two 63 models to clients.

Axopar X Brabus: Shadow 900 series

Finnish dayboat specialist Axopar teamed up with the German car manufacturer Brabus to produce a series of high-power day boats. The link between the two companies was formally announced at the 2018 Dusseldorf Boat Show, and since then, they have continued their legacy building on this Shadow series.

At this year's Boot, they unveiled the latest Stealth Green Signature edition of its Shadow 900 series. The 11.2-metre lean, green machines are powered by two Mercury Marine 450R 4.6-liter V8 four-stroke racing engines, with a combined output of 900hp; the dayboat can reach eye-watering speeds of up to 60 knots.

Aside from the ease in speed, other features inspired by the Brabus supercars are the clean and sleek helming area with futuristic elements such as fingertip controls, backlit switches, touchscreen technology and a multifunctional steering wheel. Additional comfort and luxury are showcased by the leather upholstery and lashings of carbon fibre throughout. The integrated entertainment system is completed with a 42-inch flat-screen TV and Apple TV connectivity.

This new edition comes after the launch of the Black Ops and Deep Blue Signature models in 2022. The Shadow 900 models are available in various configurations, including the fully open Spyder version, the Sun-Top, a fully enclosed XC-Cross Cabin - dubbed the SUV of the sea - and a fully enclosed cruiser.

Dynamiq X Porsche: GTT 115

Dynamiq makes no secret of its automotive inspiration when the yard launched its debut superyacht, Jetsetter in 2016. Charging ahead of the yacht-car collaborations in size and scope is  Dynamiq and one of the biggest names in the automotive industry, Porsche, with the Dynamiq GTT 115.

The 35-metre all-aluminium superyacht, now named Jaaber , was first unveiled at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show. It is hull number one in a limited edition of run of models designed by Studio F.A Porsche , Dynamiq and Vripack. The subtlety of the renowned German car manufacturer's DNA is found spanning across three decks, including the Pepita houndstooth fabrics similar to those found on the Porsche 911 R edition sportscar.

Roland Heiler, managing director of Studio F.A Porsche said: "Taking the spirit of high-performance sportscar styling to the high seas, the Dynamiq GTT 115 is designed to appeal to car lovers and forward-thinking yacht owners who appreciate the advantages of speed, style and our philosophy of intelligent performance."

Power is from a pair of 1,650hp MAN V12 engines twinned to Fortjes pod drives and three variable speed generators enabling a top speed of around 21 knots and a cruising range of 3,400 nautical miles.

Riva X Ferrari

Timeless classics are found within both industries and this one was bought to life in the early 1990s through a collaboration between the legendary Riva and Ferrari. Only 40 units of this 9.6-metre boat were produced. Making the boat considerably rarer than many of the carmakers' most desirable supercars.

Thanks to the pair of Vulcano 390hp V8 engines, this limited edition run of speedboats can reach up to speeds in excess of 50 knots. The design elements inspired by the Ferrari Testarossa, include the side streaks and full-width slotted rear end.

Aside from the Rosso Corsa paint job, the supercar-inspired spoiler sitting above the cabin makes its bold statement. Meanwhile, inside the cabin of the boat, there is a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel with yellow lettering and dials.

Bugatti X Palmer Johnson: Niniette 66

Famed for making the world’s fastest production sports car, the Veyron, the French manufacturer Bugatti joined forces with U.S. boat builder Palmer Johnson . Presenting this series of carbon fibre day boats, the name is a nod to the history of  Bugatti, Niniette was the nickname of the founder Ettore Bugatti's daughter.

Each Niniette gets its name from its length in feet. The 20-metre cruiser features a reversed, larger-than-usual sharp bow that widens to the hull sides. The main design feature comprising of a circular element, which resembles that of the Bugatti Chiron hypercar. Key features include a fire pit and a spa pool in the spacious main deck seating area and a double cabin below. In true car and yacht crossover style, there are a range of engine options allowing for top speeds of up to 44 knots.

Etienne Salomé, head of interior design at Bugatti, is delighted with the result, adding, "The Niniette is a genuine member of the Bugatti family. Even from a large distance when entering a port, the Niniette will always be recognised as a true Bugatti."

Mercedes-Benz X Silver Arrows Marine: Arrow 460-Granturismo

In the car world, it is common for a project to be in development for five years or so before the prototype is unveiled. In the boating world, no builder would tie up design capital that long, which makes this boat all the more intriguing. The idea was conceived in 2009 by Gorden Wagener, vice president of design for Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company. Mercedes has numerous design centres but the Advanced Design Centre for Mercedes-Benz Style on Italy’s Lake Como developed Wagener’s idea: what if Mercedes-Benz Style designed a boat? The Lake Como style gurus began sketching, borrowing liberally from Mercedes’ famous Silver Arrows racing cars of the 1930s and from the iconic 1954 gull wing 300 SL.

Soon the group expanded to include former automotive journalist and avid boater Paolo Bonaveri, and entrepreneurs Jacopo Spadolini and Ron Gibbs, who investigated the niche for an ultra-exclusive, innovative Med-style cruiser. They formed the UK-based company Silver Arrows Marine to build it and brought in Tommaso Spadolini and Martin Francis.

The dayboat concept was becoming multifunctional; they began to think of it as a grand touring car, a granturismo. The name stuck. On the technical side, Swiss composite expert Carboman pushed every element from skin laminates to the 3D engineering of the systems. At an overall length of just 14.2m, the R&D per centimetre is staggering. Like a car interior, everything is built-in, and storage, the head and mini galley are hidden away.

Back in the Swinging ’60s, if you wanted to wow the crowds on the Côte d’Azur, the boat to own was a Riva Aquarama. Lamborghini founder Ferruccio Lamborghini felt the same and, in 1968, bought one, persuading Carlo Riva to fit a pair of 350 hp 4.0-liter V-12s from a Lamborghini 350 GT sports car. With a top speed of 48 knots, it became the speediest Aquarama ever. It’s now for sale with Dutch specialists Riva-World.

The 4 Best Yachts Made By Car Brands

Automakers have been known to dabble in other transportation industries away from automotive. Most notably, they are involved in aviation, but a number of the top car designers and marques are trying their hand at the prestigious world of luxury yachts. With an abundance of technical and design expertise, they are well-placed to transform the yachting industry with their innovative concepts. We have chosen four designs that we think could change the face of motor yacht charters .

1. Bugatti’s Palmer Johnson Niniette 66

When the world’s fastest production car (the Bugatti Veyron) manufacturer teams up with Monaco-based Palmer Johnson, you know that this will be no run-of-the-mill yacht. The duo has created a series of carbon fibre day boats named after the daughter of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti; the latest of which is the 20-metre Niniette 66 . It has been designed to bear a close resemblance to Bugatti’s latest model, the Chiron, while retaining the lightweight carbon fibre structure that makes Palmer Johnson boats so stable and seaworthy. The Niniette 66 can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots. It has a double cabin and features a spa pool in the spacious main deck seating area as well as a fire pit.

2. Henrik Fisker and Benetti

World famous car designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker has recently lent his versatile design skills to Benetti Yachts in a spectacular collaboration. The result is the Benetti Fisker 50 concept that draws on the Italian company’s legendary elegance, sportiness, and sleek designs and combines them with Fisker’s innovative and functional thinking. The 164-foot three-deck luxury vessel highlights the Italian boatbuilder’s nautical finesse but the aft resembles the haunch of a sports car. Accommodating 12 guests, the yacht comes with a beach club, spa, and several bars. The $37 million price tag certainly reflects the pedigree reflected in this superyacht and it’s due to become available next year.

3. Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz launched their most ambitious open-top to date in 2016. They proclaimed the Arrow460-Granturismo motor yacht the “Silver Arrow of the Seas,” and boasted that it combines the performance of the brand’s most powerful sports cars with the boat industry’s latest technology. The stunning yacht even sports car-like proportions and its twin Yanmar engines provide 480hp each to ‘drive’ you across the ocean.

The first edition of yachts will be built by Baltic Yachts, whose team is highly skilled in advanced carbon construction techniques. Initially, the 14-metre Arrow460-Granturismo will be limited to 10 vessels with an asking price of €2.5 million. As you can imagine with the German marque at the helm, everything is being built to the highest standards, which includes double-curvature glazing, 3D wood veneer panelling and integrated electronics architecture. The sleek yachts come with air conditioning, a high-quality audio system, a wine cellar, and an ice-maker.

The Porsche Design Group first entered the yacht market with the Fearless 28, an 8.5-metre luxury speedboat. It was designed to replicate the iconic Porsche Carrera GT and it was suitably fast on the waves with speeds up to 78 knots. Since then, the German sports car giant has introduced a concept for a 41-metre catamaran in combination with the Swedish based company Royal Falcon Fleet as a fractional ownership initiative.

Most recently, the great-grandson of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, Peter Daniell Porsche became a partner in Kormoran. The company is attempting to create a transforming watercraft capable of cruising in six different positions, including a monohull and a trimaran. Porsche invested in the company in 2015 and are involved with ensuring the highest quality material are used, such as carbon fibre, titanium, teak and leather.

Pursuit Top 5 Car and Superyacht Collaborations

Pursuit selects five of the top recent superyacht and car collaborations worth your attention.

There is a natural synergy between superyacht design and car design. In both realms, technology, innovation and craftsmanship combine to create true icons of design. It is no wonder, then, that when these two worlds collide, the results are boundary-pushing, inspiring and entirely covetable.

1 NINIETTE BUGATTI AND PALMER JOHNSON

With a combined 207 years of heritage, Bugatti and US shipyard  Palmer Johnson  have combined forces to create a limited edition series of carbon fibre day boats inspired by the Bugatti Chiron, the Niniette 66. Powerful, fast and exclusive – like a Bugatti – the 20m Niniette 66 is also stable, efficient and luxuriously spacious, like a Palmer Johnson. The advanced stabilised hull can reach speeds of up to 44 knots, its super slim form enabling higher speeds with lower input power and fuel burn. Inside, the yacht promises contemporary spaces and sumptuous comfort, with a horseshoe-shaped lounge that subtly pays styling tribute to Bugatti’s automotive heritage using leather, nubuck, polished metal and carbon, as well as a double master suite, a marble guest bathroom and a high-spec kitchen. On the main deck seating area, you’ll find a fire pit and a spa pool.

2 GTT 115 PORSCHE AND DYNAMIQ

Innovative Dynamiq Yachts took the superyacht market by storm when it started offering clients a new way to yacht shop. Simplifying the yacht design and selection process, it enables buyers to spec out their yacht in the same way they would a luxury car, selecting fixtures and fittings from a straight-forward online configuration. It came as no surprise then when the yard teamed up with Porsche for its brand new 35m. The very first superyacht to hit the water with Porsche DNA, the GTT 115 blends comfortable high-speed cruising with transatlantic crossing capabilities. Set to be an exclusive collector’s edition, only seven will be built, with the first model having premiered at the Monaco Yacht Show 2017.

3 AEROBOAT S6 ROLLS ROYCE AND CLAYDON REEVES

The 19.8 m Aeroboat S6 is Claydon Reeves’ latest collaboration with Rolls-Royce, an iconic company that is behind some of the world’s most enduringly luxurious cars in the world, but also at the forefront of marine power systems. The S6 combines elegant, outdoor living and the thrill of high-performance cruising – Rolls-Royce will be the primary supplier for every system on board– in a beautifully designed and engineered yacht. With twin MTU V10 2000 M96 engines, a water jet propulsion system and a hull developed by BMT Nigel Gee, the S6 promises to be nimble and powerful.  As well as a grand cabin forward with expansive windows that can alternatively be transformed into a master suite, with a second cabin located amidships, this yacht also includes features more commonly found on much larger boats, like the yacht tender garage with space for a 3.8m tender or a pair of Jet Skis.

4 AUREA PININFARINA AND ROSSINAVI

The 70m Aurea is the first collaboration between the Italian powerhouses Pininfarina and Rossinavi. As you would expect from the renowned automotive design studio behind the styling of more than 100 Ferraris to date, Aurea’s profile is characteristically graceful and flowing. With a diesel-electric propulsion system housed at the centre of the boat rather than at the rear,

Aurea is able to free up more space for guests to enjoy the yachting lifestyle; a large beach club aft, two swimming pools, three large outdoor decks, water-level access on both sides of the hull and an infinity pool with al fresco dining for 12 people on the upper deck all make this the ultimate superyacht for making the most of life at sea.

5 AM37 ASTON MARTIN AND QUINTESSENCE

The result of two years of research and development, the AM37 marks Aston Martin’s debut in the yachting realm. A collaboration with Quintessence Yachts with naval architecture by Mulder Design, the 11.37m powerboat concept was revealed at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016 and the first model in the series was delivered to an American owner less than a year later. As you would expect from a boat conceived by such an iconic car brand, the AM37 is effortlessly stylish and performance-orientated. An innovative sliding hardtop, can be activated at the touch of a button, folding three carbon panels under the aft deck when the cockpit is uncovered. The carbon fibre dashboard uses leather and polished metals to echo styling elements from Aston Martin’s most advanced sports cars, while the table transforms into a comfortable bed for overnight trips. This chic day boat is available in two versions, a Gran Turismo, which can achieve 45knots, and a sportier AM37S, which can reach speeds of 50knots.

Electric hydrofoil, vessev officially unveils its vs–9 hydrofoil boat inside and out [video].

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Just over three months after coming out of stealth mode, young electric hydrofoil boat builder Vessev has shared a closer look at its flagship vessel – the VS–9. Today, the boatbuilder shared fresh images of a completed VS–9 vessel and a detailed video below.

Vessev, formerly known as Seachange, is a young, eco-friendly boat builder founded a few years ago in Auckland, New Zealand. That is where the company currently operates and is conducting sea trials of its flagship vessel, an electric hydrofoil boat called the VS–9 .

Designed for commercial operations and tourism, this electric hydrofoil “flies” above the water, offering a quieter and more efficient option in sea travel that will soon be used as a passenger ferry thanks to NetZero Maritime – the green technology team at Fullers360 – New Zealand’s largest ferry operator, who has already signed on to help commercialize the hydrofoil technology.

Vessev may be young, but it is making (smaller) waves above the water with its hydrofoil boat technology, which is finalizing commercial certification.

Electric hydrofoil boat

Vessev showcases first electric hydrofoil boat build

Today, Vessev publicly shared images and footage of its first completed VS–9 electric hydrofoil boat build. Our previous coverage of the vessel included photos of the boat tub only; the one interior shot we had was a rendering.

The images seen above are a genuine look at what the VS–9 will look like when it begins transporting passengers in New Zealand as soon as certification is complete. Per the company, the flagship electric hydrofoil boat has entered the last phase of sea trails before commercial operations begin with Fullers360.

Vessev explained that the VS–9 is stabilized by foiling technology below the waterline using technology derived from the America’s Cup. Those foils enable the boat’s carbon fiber hull to rise 50 cm above the water, clear of waves and wake.

The result is a vessel that is smoother and quieter while still offering plenty of space for passengers. Per Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann:

Traditionally, larger vessels are required to deliver a comfortable passenger experience as they can handle the impact of waves and wake. By flying above the waves, the VS–9 delivers a large vessel experience on an agile platform that can be berthed and charged in nearly any marina. One way of looking at the impact of this vessel is that our waterways today are like roadways, where the only comfortable mode of transportation are very large multi-passenger buses – i.e. ferries. These large vessels are here to stay, but they will be augmented with point-to-point services delivered by vessels such as the VS–9. It’s like introducing a limo into a world of buses. Through enhanced comfort and reduced operating costs, the VS–9 platform delivers an entirely new transportation experience that hasn’t truly been viable until today.

Today’s fresh images also give us our first look at the electric hydrofoil boat’s interior, which Vessev says was inspired by private jet travel and premium automotive brands like Rivian . It features quality materials and ergonomic seats and armrests to offer passengers added comfort while they enjoy the views from the panoramic windows. Laaakmann again spoke:

In designing the VS–9 transportation configuration, we knew that we wanted to create something that highlights the unique advantages of this technology. She includes stylish seating for 10 where easy conversation can flow between guests while quietly gliding to their destination. The full standing height cabin also includes wraparound glass with panoramic views of the environment around them. Our goal was to make sure the passengers of the VS–9 are connecting with only two things – those on the journey with them as well as their surroundings. We’ve accomplished exactly that.

With ten passengers aboard, the VS-9 can reach a cruising speed of 25 knots (~29 mph) and has a range of 50 nautical miles (57 miles/92.6km). It can recharge its batteries at any marina plug, but that area has a DC fast charger; the VS–9 can recoup 0.8 nautical miles of range per minute.

Vessev hopes it can open up new opportunities for sustainable marine travel in the transport and tourism industries. Looking ahead, the company is already working on a larger vessel called the VS-18 that can transport up to 100 passengers. While we await the arrival of both electric hydrofoil boats, here’s an up-close look at the VS–9, posted by Vessev today:

This Truck Could Dethrone The Toyota Tacoma As America's Favorite

These shockingly affordable classic cars will turn heads everywhere you go, this design study shows the french still rule car design.

Full-size luxury cars have always held a special place in enthusiasts' hearts, from the Lincoln Continental to the Rolls Royce Phantom, and a number of other  classic cars , These popularly-called land yachts are historical gems of the automotive industry.

RELATED:  Ranking The Greatest Classic American Personal Luxury Cars On The Used Market

Many of these vehicles come at excessive prices, however. Luckily, some models have deprecated, so for example, you can now easily find some of the most luxurious and most  beautiful Cadillacs at an affordable price . While new models such as the latest iteration of the Rolls Royce Phantom will cost the same as an entire car collection , here are 10 timeless classics that are just as comfortable and luxurious but complete bargains.

10 1982 Bentley Mulsanne ($9,900)

The Americans may be kings of the long, luxurious vehicles, but the Europeans also have a few models to boast about. Especially German models, such as the Bentley Mulsanne.

The model was introduced in 1980 as a performance luxury car, but the price has remained rather affordable despite all the luxury included. The name Mulsanne is vastly inscribed into the Bentley motorsports history, with the five victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But luxury and heritage isn't all the Bentley Mulsanne offers as there's also quite a lot of performance coming from its 6.75-liter V8 engine that produces a massive 260 hp.

9 1969 Pontiac Bonneville ($6,000)

The first Pontiac Bonneville rolled off the production line in 1958 and in the next 30 years stood as the top-notch luxury model of the Pontiac brand. The fourth generation of the Pontiac Bonneville was introduced in 1965 and is now one of the most affordable Bonnevilles on the used market.

Style, luxury, and overall enjoyment remained, adding to it the slanted dashboard and wooden interior. The exterior also saw some major adjustments, such as the removal of side creases and widening of the taillights. This classic beauty comes with the powerful 7.0-liter V8 engine rated at 360 hp.

8 1969 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special ($15,400)

The Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special stands as one of Cadillac's most luxurious vehicles ever. The full-size luxury car introduces some styling changes for the 1969 model year, such as the headrests on front seats. The extended wheelbase offered a lot more room, while the exterior changes included dual headlights and no more vent wings on the front doors.

With the 7.7-liter V8 powerplant rated at 375 hp, this black beauty is a special gem in history and one of the most popular Cadillac classics ever built, so it's surprising that pristine-condition models go for such low prices.

7 1959 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Coupé Convertible ($14,700)

Once the flagship model of the Oldsmobile brand, the Oldsmobile 98 and the first vehicle under the 98 name was produced in 1941. Rendered as the top line model, the Oldsmobile 98 featured advanced technologies right from the start, and the 1959 model is no exception.

Powered by the 6.5-liter Rocket V8 engine that produces 315 hp, the 2-door coupe convertible is the right choice for a daily driver and with the luxury and reliability this land-yachts offer, every classic car lover is in for a treat.

6 1972 Buick Riviera ($17,900)

Not many classics can compete with the style, beauty, and drivability of the 1972 Buick Riviera. It's among several iconic classic land yachts of its era but stands out for its sheer design excellence.

The boat-tail is there to make you fall in love with the entire car, while the luxurious interior and powerful engine are there to make your driving experience feel out of this world. The powerplant is a 7.5-liter V8 down-tuned to 255 hp due to EPA emissions requirements. Some of the advanced features for this model year include power-boosted disc brakes, a power steering system, and even remote-controlled mirrors, all helping to better up the driving experience.

5 1961 Lincoln Continental ($18,800)

Often rendered as the greatest mafia car of all time, the Lincoln Continental breeds luxury throughout ten generations. The first-ever Lincoln Continental rolled off the production line in 1940, but the model is still in production, with the latest version of the Lincoln Continental rolling out last year featuring suicide doors .

The 1961 Lincoln Continental was ahead of its time with its design, style, and luxury, which include the “suicide” rear-hinged rear doors, among other perks. It was powered by the 7.0-liter V8 engine, churning out an impressive 300 hp, making it a perfect classic cruiser.

4 1956 DeSoto Fireflite ($18,100)

DeSoto was in existence from 1928 until 1961 under the Chrysler brand and had a few models that turned heads in its 33 years of operating. One of these models is the top-of-the-line DeSoto Fireflite, which was in production from 1955 and 1960.

It is best remembered for the long, tapering tail fins, which are the first thing anyone will notice on this beauty as they come in a two-toned exterior finish. The DeSoto Fireflite was powered by a 5.4-liter V8 engine that developed 255 hp, able to launch the Fireflite to a top speed of 110 mph.

3 1959 Buick Electra 225 ($9,600)

The Buick Electra 225 was first introduced in 1959 as a renamed Buick Roadmaster and was in production all the way until 1990. Offered as the top-notch Buick Electra 225 was the most luxurious model of the Buick line, and the unique rear delta fins will make you fall in love with the car. Don't let the two doors fool you, as the "225" in the model's name represents the length of the car in inches.

The powerplant of this beauty was the standard 6.6-liter V8 rated at 325 hp and mated to 2-speed Dynaflow automatic. With power steering and power brakes, the Buick Electra 225 is one of the classic cruisers to own.

2 1966 Imperial LeBaron ($11,100)

The first automobile under the Imperial nameplate appeared in 1926 as Chrysler's luxury model. However, in 1955, the Imperial became a separate company and operated until 1983. Nevertheless, the Imperial has birthed a number of luxurious models, including the Imperial LeBaron.

The Imperial LeBaron rolled off the production line with the 7.2-liter V8 engine, generating 350 hp, and among America's finest cars of the era thanks to the contemporary look and the luxurious interior, glowing with leather and wood.

1 1984 Rolls Royce Silver Spur ($16,500)

Nowadays, it is hard to find an affordable Rolls Royce, but some models, such as the 1984 Silver Spur can be bought at a rather cheap price. With its long wheelbase, a beautiful rounded design  (the work of Austrian stylist Fritz Feller), and a luxurious interior, it represents one of the most marvelous models of this British car manufacturer.

It's powered by a 6.75-liter V8 engine rated at 220 hp and paired with 3-speed GM THM400 automatic. But despite the large V8 and a gorgeous interior, the prices of these models frequently gravitate around $15,000.

Beyond Electric: Big Car Brands Get Creative with Green Goals

Carmakers are eschewing lavish materials and profligate processes, and instead looking to alternatives.

When words like less, more, smaller and greater are listed in concert, it’s easy to view them as contradictory. But vehicle manufacturers and their engineers classify these terms as development and reinvention targets. Less weight, more torque, smaller engines, greater range. The pragmatic drive to make something better has grown to include another pair of words that were, until recently, often seen as diametrically opposed among car brands: sustainability and luxury.

Carmakers are increasingly eschewing lavish materials and profligate processes, and instead looking to alternatives that showcase a new kind of quality. In the following pages, we explore how a handful of automobile brands navigate and reimagine the most important global challenge facing the industry — environmental efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz

On average, it takes automakers a handful of years to bring a vehicle from sketch to market. The newest concept from Mercedes-Benz , the fully electric Vision EQXX, began a scant two years ago.

With a range of 620 miles on a single charge (that’s 6.1 miles per kilowatt hour, a “crazy low” consumption according to Malte Sievers, an EQXX development engineer), the vehicle is compelling.

It’s also the darling of Ambition 2039, Mercedes-Benz’s plan to have a completely CO2-neutral fleet of passenger cars and vans by the aforementioned year. The brand proposed a drastic shift in value chain and life cycle to be implemented a full 11 years before it is required by European Union legislation.

While broad, sweeping statements have the ability to pressure other manufacturers, it’s the details that demonstrate true commitment. Rollout has already begun. Still in its halo model phase, Vision EQXX uses CO2-reduced flat steel in its body.

“Green steel,” as Sievers refers to it, is produced entirely from scrap in an electric arc furnace, reducing CO2 emissions by 70%. (By contrast, the traditional blast furnace emits an average of more than two tons of CO2 per ton of steel produced.)

Not only are parts of CO2-reduced steel already “in initial applications” throughout the current A-Class and E-Class, the new C-Class and the EQE, but Mercedes-Benz took an equity stake in a Swedish start-up that is currently prototyping a steel with iron made from hydrogen (instead of coking coal).

That willingness to go outside of its own research and development to pursue partnerships, and facilitate and incorporate new technologies — in addition to increasing the amount of recycled and sustainable materials developed in-house — establishes the wide-reaching possibility for varied collaborations.

As the first to market an all-electric performance SUV in its I-Pace, it makes perfect sense for Jaguar Land Rover’s circular economy team to also be the first to sort out a recycling strategy for its electrical vehicle batteries. “We have nickel, lithium and cobalt, not the most common materials,” said Andrew Whitworth of Jaguar’s circular economy team. “We are finding creative ways to maintain the use of the material we have, versus the throwaway society we’ve become accustomed to.”

Jaguar’s engineering team worked with energy manufacturing company Pramac to develop a zero-emission energy storage unit powered by second-life Jaguar I-Pace batteries appropriated from prototype and engineering test vehicles. The Off Grid Battery Energy Storage System features lithium-ion cells from one-and-a-half second-life Jaguar I-Pace batteries and supplies zero-emission power.

Its splashy public debut (and capability flex) occurred at the 2022 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship during testing in the UK and Spain, where the Pramac unit ran the team’s diagnostic equipment and supplied auxiliary power to Jaguar’s pit garage. Quite simply, “You get two bites of the apple,” Whitworth said. This reuse has also given Jaguar “a way to reimagine our strategy and take greater involvement in the supply chain.”

Currently, Jaguar is triaging in-house, meaning they are testing the energy density of each returned I-Pace battery, analyzing and ultimately placing it where it can be most effective. The company is also sorting out how to apply that strategy to non-battery-related items like lights and the bumpers, as well as PHEV batteries. Whitworth noted: “We want to get maximum value out of everything we create and deeply invest in our sustainability message. We can figure out how to make money later. This is for the planet.”

“We don’t just want to buy offsets,” Spencer Reeder, Audi’s director of government affairs and sustainability, told Elite Traveler . One of the facets of Audi’s Mission: Zero program aims for carbon neutrality (versus offsets) throughout its network, including manufacturing, suppliers, dealer operations and logistics, to name a few.

Audi released a 127-page sustainability report in 2019 outlining its objectives for Mission: Zero. Last year, the automaker took a page from the Microsoft handbook and introduced an internal sustainability fund. Within it is an internal carbon price, “which means every time someone on the executive team gets on a plane, they pay into the sustainability fund. We put a price on pollution to change behavior,” Reeder explained.

The Four Rings have a series of firsts: first carbon-neutral alloy wheel (on the e-tron GT), one of the first plants to have net-zero water waste cycle, plus a pair of ‘largests’ — the largest commercial rooftop solar system in Europe and the brand with the largest fully electric portfolio in the world (e-tron SUV, e-tron Sportback, e-tron GT/RS, e-tron GT, Q4 e-tron, Q4 Sportback e-tron).

What’s striking is Audi’s commitment — both broad and narrow — to ecologically considerate methodologies. It’s been a notable about-face for the brand, which was embroiled in controversy in the 2008 Dieselgate scandal. Reeder, who joined Audi in 2018, said, “The leadership was really serious about pivoting the company, and I think we have.”

Lamborghini

The Raging Bull likely isn’t a brand consumers associate with sustainability. Lamborghini began this year by announcing four vehicle debuts featuring internal combustion engines, a curious move considering the vast majority of manufacturers are focusing their energies on alternative fuel sources. While the company’s first V12 hybrid is set to debut in 2023, with full electrification by 2026, this isn’t the first time Lamborghini has taken its time entering a mass-market shift. Now its best-selling vehicle, Urus launched in 2017, years after luxury SUVs rose to dominate the sector.

What may surprise, however, is the decade-long commitment to eco-initiatives throughout the Sant’Agata Bolognese facility. Since 2010, the Lamborghini photovoltaic plant, the largest in the region, has allowed a reduction of 2,000 tons of CO2. While leather and carbon fiber remain a predominant part of vehicle production, in 2020 the company recovered 56% of all special manufacturing waste, recycling it into small leather goods and sub-products.

Lamborghini may be in the pulse-quickening, hair-blowing-in-the-wind business, thanks to supercars like the 5.2-liter V10 naturally aspirated Huracán STO, but many don’t know they’re also purveyors of honey. Six years ago, the company installed an apiary with roughly 600,000 bees inside Lamborghini Park. Every year 948 lbs of honey is produced, a Christmas gift to employees.

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

A woman examines the rubble of a destroyed building

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

Reps. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, leave a House Republican Conference candidate forum

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

Donald Trump looks as J.D. Vance speaks.

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

“A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

Miller’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
