The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. Laguna Beach Man Pleads Guilty to Unsafely Operating Drone Near Several Aircraft, Including a Coast Guard Helicopter in Mid-FlightSANTA ANA, California – An Orange County man pleaded guilty today to federal criminal charges for unsafely operating a drone aircraft on several occasions, including once flying it near a United States Coast Guard helicopter in mid-flight off the coast of Laguna Beach. Alexander Milinovic, 62, of Laguna Beach, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of unsafe operation of an unmanned aircraft. According to his plea agreement, Milinovic unsafely operated a drone on three occasions from June 2022 to March 2023. On June 19, 2022, Milinovic launched his drone at a father and son who were flying an open-cockpit gyrocopter on Father’s Day. Milinovic flew the unmanned aircraft to within 10 to 20 feet of the gyrocopter, which was off the coast of Crescent Bay Beach in Laguna Beach, which caused the son, who was operating the gyrocopter, to make an emergency course correction to avoid striking the drone and crashing into the Pacific Ocean. On July 26, 2022, Milinovic launched a drone at and flew it next to a Discovery Channel “Shark Week” blimp flying at an altitude between 500 and 1,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean in the Laguna Beach area. The blimp’s pilot estimated the drone to be in line with hitting the blimp and causing him to navigate a life-threatening emergency crash landing. On March 19, 2023, four members of a Coast Guard flight crew were flying a rescue helicopter about 200 to 300 feet above sea level in Laguna Beach. Milinovic launched a drone and flew it directly at the Coast Guard helicopter, coming to within 200 feet of it. The crew maneuvered the helicopter away from the drone, fearing it would hit their tail rotor and cause the helicopter to crash into the Pacific Ocean. Law enforcement was notified in November 2022 of videos posted on the TikTok social media application that showed Milinovic’s drone flying dangerously close to aircraft. United States District Judge Fred W. Slaughter scheduled a November 28 sentencing hearing, at which time Milinovic will face a statutory maximum sentence of one year in federal prison for each count. The FBI and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department investigated this matter as part of the Joint Terrorism Task Force with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration and the United States Coast Guard. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer L. Waier of the Santa Ana Branch Office is prosecuting this case. Laguna 26 mast lowering/raising
To clarify, in the photo we're looking at the mast from forward and starboard of the mast, right? It would help to see the other side. It looks like the slot is there so that the bolt can slide up as the mast goes down. And I agree that would put a lot of point load at the base of the mast. Does that SS bracket go completely under the foot of the mast, so that it can act as a bearing surface? That would probably be okay. I mean, it's not like the load is tons. Still, it does seem like an odd design. Tedd Yes, you are right about the perspective. I will try to remember to take another picture of the aft end when I go to the boat tomorrow. The stainless steel plate/fitting does completely go under the base of the mast so I’m not worried about the cabin top, just the aft end of the mast when the slot for the mainsail slugs run ... not down that low of course, but still, I don’t want to crush anything. I doubt it will crush. But you might think about rounding the corner off once you get it down. Even a fraction of an inch of radius would probably help quite a bit. Tedd What is the hole at top of the bracket for? There is another at the bottom. That looks like the same setup as on my McGregor 22. I doubt that your mast is even twice the weight than mine but even if it were it wouldn't collapse the back edge of the 1/8 inch thick mast as you lower it. The manufacturer would not have designed the tabernacle that way if it was designed only to be set by crane. watercolors IILloydB is right! I have a Catalina 22 and I have weighed my mast at 44 lbs. with the stays hanging from it. My sons 28 footer, I can carry the mast across the deck my self. Crazy Dave CondonI have seen that style before as a dealer. Generally the back of the mast at the bottom was cut straight with the backside cut at an angle to allow dropping the mast backwards. Can you take a photo of the backside bottom of your mast Thanks Dave. Here is a picture of the back of the mast. As you can see, the heel of the mast is not cut at an angle (or curved) like you describe, so it seems all the stress on the channel for the mainsail lugs will almost certainly bend it if I lower the mast aft, unless I can actually lift up on the mast as it’s lowering, but I don’t even think this is possible. Any ideas, suggestions, feedback, etc. most welcome! AttachmentsThanks everyone for the feedback. I have calculated that the mast only weighs about 45 pounds, but when lowering it the stress on the mast heel (which is a very small area) will be quite large, which is why I am worried. Look at Purplesagetradingpost.com a good system for lowering your mast and will releave your fears. SailingLotoIt will work fine. I too have a Laguna 26, and appreciate your photo as mine came disassembled and just yesterday I was looking at my step wondering which way it faced. My Clipper 21 had the same set up. It will pivot right over the corner of the mast with no damage. Okay, thanks so much. Great to hear that from an actual Laguna 26 owner! Do you have the same stainless steel bracket that screws into the deck top and the same beefy bolt that goes through the bracket and mast and allows the mast to rotate and the pivot point to move up and down about 1.5 inches? Here is a link to my blog...it might provide more helpful pictures for you. << START HERE >> yep, same bracket. mine also has a plate under it to attach blocks to for cockpit routed halyards Could you post a picture of the plate and bracket. I would like to do the same thing as your setup. LagunaJay said: Could you post a picture of the plate and bracket. I would like to do the same thing as your setup. Click to expand You could raise the mast slightly and throw a chunk of cheap pine 1x under it, could wax the bottom so it slides easy, mast features like the track will dig into the pine way before the pine bends the aluminum, which is wicked strong anyway and probably would survive the point load. I personally hate the sound of metal scraping across metal... If the backside of the mast base is cut or angled upwards to allow the mast to be dropped backwards easier, that is not a problem as the mast is aluminum resting on a stainless steel mast foot which based on my experience as a dealer was never an issue Mast lowering went as planned. Thanks everyone for the advice. To get it raised, I will have to extend the “pulpit leverage pole” by 2-3 feet, but at least it came down okay with no damage and no injuries!
