Los Cabos Is One Of The Top Destinations To See Mega Yachts

Whale watching is not the only spectator event that tourists in Los Cabos can enjoy. The region is fast becoming one of the largest growing mega yacht destinations. According to data collected by FITURCA, one of Los Cabos’ most important tourism promoters, around 98 mega yachts of over 80 feet in length have visited the Cabo San Lucas marina in the first half of the year.

The number makes the marina one of the busiest luxury ports in the world. The arrival of mega yachts in the region gives onlookers dining in and around the Cabo San Lucas Marina an added visual attraction at the very least. Also, the presence of these large vessels gives the local economy a major boost.  

The Arrival of Mega Yachts Was A Growing Industry Before The Pandemic  

According to Rodrigo Esponda of FITURCA mega yacht arrivals were a growing industry before the pandemic. Things slowed down in 2020, and 2021, but arrivals have rebounded nicely this year. Esponda speculates that one of the reasons why mega yacht arrivals in Los Cabos are on their way to return to pre-pandemic levels is the facilities that the Cabo San Lucas Marina offers. Esponda mentioned, 

“The marina in Cabo San Lucas features 400 spots to dock, this makes it one of the most active marinas in the world. The arrival of luxury boats in 2019 was one of the most solid industries in the region. It was developing well, and showed signs of consistent growth. The arrival of boats larger than 80 feet is once again a growing industry in 2022. The numbers that are being posted are interesting.”      

Medium Sized Boats Continue To Flock To Los Cabos As Well 

It’s not just mega yachts of over 80 feet that are making their way to Los Cabos. Medium-sized boats of about 50 to less than 80 feet are also arriving in considerable numbers to the Los Cabos marina. Most of these “medium” sized boats are used for sport fishing. In May alone 28 foreign boats made their way to Los Cabos shores. With 77% of those boats being between 50 and 80 feet in length. 

Although 2022 has seen more foreign boats arrive to the Cabo marina numbers are still below 2019 levels. In spite of this Rodrigo Esponda believes that both mega yacht, and medium-sized boat arrivals will continue to climb in the coming years. Esponda mentioned that people who take a boating trip while on their Cabo vacation seemed to be more pleased with their overall experience in the region. The general director of FICTURA said, 

“The arrival of yachts, and even the use of yachts is an important difference maker in tourist satisfaction levels. Particularly when sport fishing is involved. We have a 96% satisfaction rate amongst tourists who visit the region. But the people who come here and do a bit of sports fishing are really marveled by their experience. Knowing this we will take strides to provide a more modern fleet of sports fishing boats.”    

Sports Fishing Is A Large Part Of The Local Economy

Tourist satisfaction may not be the only reason why local tourism promoters want to get as many people on boats as they can in Los Cabos. The sports fishing industry accounts for 40% of the GDP in the entire state of Baja California. Estimates indicate that on average a tourist that arrives in the region to do sports fishing will spend 2500 US dollars a day. That’s 5 times more than what a regular tourist that doesn’t fish spends in the state. With this in mind, it’s clear why local tourism promoters love the presence of mega yachts, and medium-sized boats in Cabo shores.

Our family had an incredible time on this boat. It’s a perfect layout and space for our family, which included lots of children. We could watch them easily. The staff went above and beyond serving us food and drinks and we got to see so many big, colorful, beautiful fish at the beach we stopped near. It was an amazing experience and I highly recommend.

We celebrated my sisters bachelorette with a PERFECT day on board. The crew was incredible, the drinks and food were fantastic and they did such an amazing job making sure we had whatever we needed whenever. The boat was PERFECT- enough spots for sun and shade. Luis connected us with a local transport company for pickup who we also used for the rest of the evening. Couldn’t have been easier or a better time. 12/10 would recommend and would absolutely rebook if I return to Cabo.

300 Foot Mega-yacht Dana Voyager

We have been watching and filming the many mega-yachts coming and going in our Bay of San Lucas. I also enjoy researching and discovering the story behind the yachts and the owners. This particular explorer style yacht is a bit of a mystery. 

It is owned by a small supply and service company called Voyager Marine Alliance Group (VMAG) based in Fort Lauderdale FL. David Leone is the President and presumed owner of the Voyager yacht. They provide a wide range of High Seas Navigation Systems, Communications Systems, Steering and Control systems along with Custom Pilot House Integrated Consoles. They spent 3 years retrofitting and upgrading this supply ship into this amazing Mega-yacht. This is the single largest rebuild ever in the USA. It was lengthened by 30 feet to a total length of 300 feet in Louisiana then shipped to corporate headquarters in Fort Lauderdale for the final finishes and extensive electronics work.

They claim this is the first fully integrated system on a yacht. “This means that anywhere on the vessel there are access points that can monitor any type of activity, i.e. navigation, security, radar, engines, generators, power distribution, fuel, water, etc., to enable the captain to have complete control of the vessel, whether he is at the helm, in the sun lounge or in his cabin.” All systems are accessed on touch screen computers. I’m imagining the captain using an iPad to control the whole ship.The unique aft has a wide range of tenders and dive boats as well as a fully stocked dive center. These under seas diving scientists are cruising in style with a staff of 70 for support.In any event, this unique style mega yacht is being used as a floating salesroom as well as a scientific research explorer. The real mystery is how a small company with only 12 employees and annual revenue of $2.27 million can afford such a prized mega-yacht. I would imagine the annual operating costs of this beast to equal their revenue.

An incredible mega yacht so large that has its own submarine could double as a billionaires playground and a research lab.

Plans for the 700ft Goliath yacht includes research equipment, jet skis, helicopters and three heated pools.

The vessel is touted to cost a whopping £1 billion - $A2 billion.

Part of the Goliath series, the Q-quest yacht designed by California based yacht designer Steve Kozloff.

The massive research floater has been described as an expedition dream, providing plenty of lab space for research, experimentation, and medical intervention.

The mega-yacht is also loaded with plenty of exploration vehicles, including six hydrofoil tenders, two seaplanes, three jet skies, two helicopters, a U-Worx Research submarine, and a garage for two overland SUVs.

A separate hangar at midship stores two Cessna Caravan Seaplanes, selected for their ability to transport resupply across long distances.

The three upper decks are reserved for the owner and guests, offering 18 VIP cabins and a primary suite with a private balcony and pool.

It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theatre.

The mega yacht also has an impressive 3,000-square-foot owner’s suite with panoramic views at the bow, a large spa and pool, a basketball court.

There’s another pool with a shaded lounge area above the hangar, a dining room at the stern, and a solarium with a second dining area, plus a beach club with a full bar.

A total of 26 owner’s guests will reside on the three upper decks, while an operating crew of 150 including doctors, scientists, pilots, nurses, research engineers will reside in unspecified quarters.

Luxury aside, the predominantly research vessel would carry a complete oceanographic laboratory, a medical laboratory with MRI and X-ray imaging.

It could even hold as many as 20 hospital beds with 5G-connected robotic surgery facilities.

Propelled by thrusters powered by batteries, the vessel can reach a top speed of 20 knots with a range of 20,000 nautical miles.

Kozloff told autoevolution : “The mission of G-Quest, a 705-foot yacht, allows its owner to oversee their philanthropic efforts while living in luxury at sea.

“It is designed for both humanitarian and research objectives.”

The G-quest isn’t the only luxury yacht to boast a helipad.

Plans for the “Floating Dubai” vessel include an enormous pool deck , a relaxing spa and not one, but two enormous helipads on board.

Christened UAE One, the superboat was designed by Milan-based Enzo Manca, who collaborated with a sheikh to make it the flagship of the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement, Manca said: “The idea of UAE One was born in 2020, during a very special meeting between me and a sheikh of the United Arab Emirates on vacation in Italy.

“The sultan was very clear and categorical, he wanted something really special and unique.”

UAE One is inspired by historic defence ships, yet its curving lines distinguishes it from other vessels on the high seas.

It also stands over 130 feet tall and has tinted windows for extra privacy in true military style.

With nine decks and a total area of slightly over 30,000 square feet, the monster yacht is designed to give guests, diplomats, and kings the finest experience possible.

There is an owner’s suite, eight cabins, and 14 mini suites within.

The staff has 35 cabins as well.

The main deck, meanwhile, has a beautiful 18-metre geometric swimming pool.

There are also several outdoor lounges for sundowners, a platform for ocean swims, and a wellness centre with a spa on board.
